      The Tim Holze pencils may require that they be harder to maintain the woodless form (to keep them from breaking).

      I have all 6 and love them. You can get the hmm trying to figure out the name .. it’s the consistency of the outside of a milk plastic jug. You can put it on there and activate with water . You can mix colors etc. they are just like regular watercolors in my opinion.

    I made my shavings into a watercolour palette using full trays in a tin. For that alone they are worth the money. Blending is so much easier when turning the shavings into a watercolour palette. Tiffany Soloria has a video on doing this.

    There’s actually a single pencil sold separately that you’re missing, the last Distress color - Scorched Timber. I have the first three sets and never think to even use them so I haven’t bothered getting the last 3 sets. These are pencils, not crayons. His “crayons” are the ones you said you didn’t like because they were “waxey”. These should be compared to what they are, watercolor pencils. 🤷‍♀️

  • @christianeeichler6919

    Loved to see the comparison. I think that you can get professional sets of watercolor pencils for the same, or almost the same money. In Germany the Tim Holtz pencils are about 30 € per set, so for 72 you pay 180. That's way more than a professional grade Watercolor pencil set of the same size! For Albrecht Dürer watercolor pencils you pay about 100 € for a 60 set. That is 2.50 vs 1.67 € per pencil, if you buy sets. From what I see from your swatches many colors are very similar. I have very inexpensive watercolor pencils by Koh-I-Noor, a 36 set, which for me is really enough, as it is easy to mix colors for new ones. I don't use them that often anyways. As crayons I have Neocolors II, bought only a few of my favourite colors open stock.

    Thank you for this swatch session. I had the first 3 sets and sold them because I really love the neo color II much more. I also like the woody, 🖍️
    The neo color 2 range is much larger and you get to choose your color as they are sold open stock ( so you could spend less and have the exact color you want, even if they are expensive). 👋
    Ps : an other way to use all of them to avoid stricky lines is to rub them on a textured palette and apply with a brush 😉

    I never heard of the Tim Holtz distress watercolor pencils. I thought the pigment was pretty rich and I like that you can go back and add in hard lines. It would be fun to see you complete a few small paintings using these and layering them.

    There have been other woodless watercolor pencils in the past (I have a set), but there is only one brand recently listed at one of the major US art supply store (Blick's). They are Creatacolor Aqua...and they're made in Austria! You may have an easier time getting access to these than some other art supplies. I would say the Tim Holtz watercolor pencils are more of a craft item rather than fine art. Not sure where Creatacolor fits in the mix, but they are cheaper than the TH version. I believe we are paying more for the TH version because of all the work that went into matching the pencils with the TH inks--and for the TH branding. I make a lot of cards, and having a watercolor source that matches the TH line of inks, etc., was my ONLY reason for purchasing. FYI: True watercolor pencils are not engineered to smudge.

  • @user-cg9qd5ws6y
    @user-cg9qd5ws6y Před 4 měsíci +3

    These are actually woodless watercolor PENCILS and not watercolor crayons. Because they are woodless, they definitely look more like crayons, which I think can cause a bit of confusion. I wonder if you would differently about these if you compared them to other watercolor pencils? Because here it seems like you are expecting them to behave and feel more like watercolor crayons. I think this is why you are saying they are more hard and dusty and not creamy as you are expecting them to be. Hope that makes sense 😃

  • @MelsHobbyCorner

    Loved seeing you swatch all of the colors!! I have the first three sets of these pencils, but haven't gotten the new sets yet to round out my collection. The reason you are likely seeing the Distress Watercolor Pencils losing pigment when you put down the color is due to the fact the Distress Watercolor Pencils don't contain a filler. Tim talked about it in his launch video for the most recent three sets he released. The are pure pigment with no fillers, so it you put the color down pretty hard, you will likely end up with pigment "dust" on your paper.

    Comparing the volume of a Stabilo Woodie to a Distress Watercolor pencil isn't that useful. Which has more pigment? Which would create the longest line before running out? My Stabilos (same as Woodies, but much older and in a set with more colors than currently sold) are softer. Oranges and tangerines are both orange-colored fruit, but we don't expect them to be the same. Just because they differ doesn't mean one is "better." With media, one might be better for a specific application, but not universally. For people who rely on the Distress inks and paints and stains, that the pencils are color matched as closely as possible might make them a better choice. People who want to draw with bold strokes might prefer Woodies.

    They are considered pencils not crayons. Certainly couldn't compare them to carandache neocolor ll crayons. They are more like Kimberly watercolor pencils. If you watch some of the videos that Tim has done on them, some dip them in water and use them. Tim keeps separate sets of them for that cause he doesn't like the mess😮 There are 72 to go along with the ink pads 72 colors. Does anyone need 72.? I don't think so. I have a lot of distress ink pads but maybe only 50-60. Maybe 30 oxides. When it comes to crayons a large set of Neo ll's, a standard size of woodys(which I use less than Neos. ) Watercolor pencils are Kimberly's, and Intense (favs) and the first set of Tim's. I just saw the video of him demoing them a couple of weeks ago and decided I was not using them correctly. Even so, I wish they sold them in smaller sets or singularly as I see no need for 72 unless you really love them and have no other brands of pencils.

    Castle arts makes a woodless watercolor pencil and then of course as far as crayons go the best in my opinion and many other artists opinions would be the neo color 2 by Caran D'ache. These are definitely with this watercolor pencil not a crayon. I wish that I could get them because the color selection is so beautiful. I do have curiosities as to whether or not they are true watercolor or if they are more in line with inktense. I love all of this watching so please do a lot worse watching. This is my first time to your channel and I really enjoyed the method you worked with. I would like to see if these colors were wet or Lift, because that would tell me if they are watercolor, dye based or ink. I am definitely a subscriber now. I'm sure the Tim Holtz crayons are a quality product and will perform well. And the colors do look vivid and beautiful. Unfortunately, they are priced similarly to very popular fine art water soluble crayons Neocolor 2. Neocolor 1 the original Neocolor is waxed based and will not dissolve in water. I'm not sure that people who only use them for crafting and more temporary crafts will eagerly pay north of $30 for sets of 12 ($35.99 Amazon.) These water soluble crayons by price and quality fall into a category that is not quite craft and not exactly fine art. It's kind of an in-between and that may be a hard sell. I have NC 1 & 2...don't even use them that much so won't be purchasing TH crayons. I'm a big fan of Tim Holtzs' paper-crafting products. He's tops! And his Distress Oxide inks that give wonderful effects with just a light spritz of water, have no rival.
    p.s. If anyone reading this is a paper crafter and haven't watched the Saturday product release videos of Tim Holtz on CZcams, reviewing & explaining his new releases and then the fantastic creations by his talented team of makers using his new and current products , you really should. It's amazing what his team of designer/makers come up with. So much fun to see.
