I remember the memes going wild after that canadian guy got a medal... "What is the canadian doing on our national championships"
And don't forget about Zbigniew BrĂłdka from Poland ;)
That was later, the joke was made by then.

Yeah about that.
Paul J. Zimmerman to be fair the Canadian was half Dutch and lived in the Netherlands 'till his 20th..
it's so cute hearing her try to pronounce dutch names.

Try? She didn't. She just used English pronunciation on every letter of every name.
She tried a German accent. Didn't work but she tried.

Weird that The Netherlands are ruling skating and field hockey for decades, but ice hockey is still almost non-existent here...
JD how about figureskating
JD ice hockey is to expensive, a stick cost 120 euros and it only last like 2 weeks max
I know it is expensive and I can understand the travel costs. Nonetheless I wonder how valid that argument is when you look at the 26 Dutch Olympic Equestrian medals (10 gold, 13 silver). For a jumping game you need to travel far and a lot too. With your freaking horse that is (a horse being much more expensive than any ice hockey outfit). Equestrianism is more expensive and more cumbersome than ice hockey, but still far more popular. While for ice hockey, in general, you just need ice, skates and a stick. (You can even practice it on rollerblades on tarmac.) I understand we have less frozen lakes nowadays, but that doesn't explain why we never had any noticeable accomplishment in ice hockey as a nation during the days of Sjoukje Dijkstra, Kees Verkerk, Ard Schenk, Piet Kleine, Evert van Benthem and Yvonne van Gennip. And with "noticeable accomplishment" I do not mean winning an olympic medal, but the Dutch barely even participated!? (1980 being the exception.) By the way, most sports require a lot of traveling, time and dedication, especially at higher levels.
We are doing curling now, so thatâs cool
Holland is one of the richest countries on earth, money can't be the problem
Volgens mij zijn de meeste mensen die dit kijken ook gewoon Nederlands, dus hallo! :)
Of course. ;)

We called the 2014 Olympic speed skating championships 'open Dutch national's' đ
Yeah, the real competition was at the OKT
The Dutch obsession with ice is even older than that. Look at Dutch landscape paintings. When the Plague was over in the world, there was a relatively cold period in history. It was called 'The little ice age'. Funnily enough that age fell together with a prosporous time for the Netherlands. (15th-16th-17th century) In that time there were tons of painters making winter landscapes and so many people were skating. That is proof that it's quite an old tradition.
In the 20th century there was the first official 'Elfstedentocht' (Eleven Cities Tour). It's a skating event bigger than anything. You skate 200 km around all 11 old cities of Friesland (province of NL). This competition is the most important of all skating prizes there are. Sven Kramer, one of the best skaters in the world, said once "If the Elfstedentocht will come at the same time as the Olympic games, I shall go back to skate it." Sadly, the last one was in 1997. After that year, the ice wasn't good enough in the following winters to do so. It's that imfamous! If you win at the world cup, it's impressive, you win a distance and become world champion, that's most impressive, you win the olympics, you are a legend, you win the Eleven Cities Tour, you are a demigod!
joehoe222 demigodđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
I think that "Eleven Town Tour" is a more suitable translation of _Elfstedentocht_ than yours. Cities are Randstad size.
City is a place with a Cathedral in the official defenition, so indeed you're right. ;). Only Leeuwarden had one inn the past, but that's gone now
Nope wrong! All those so called 'Towns' are offically cities, with city rights! So the eleven city tour is a correct way of saying it :) they were cities back in the day, and because of the 'Elfstedentocht' the city rights were never provoked. ^^
"Elfdorpentocht", just doesn't sound right...
I remember the talk of dropping the 10k after the NL being to dominant and the distance not being to camera friendly. You know that you're dominant when people want to nerf a sport just for you to get at least 1 medal less than you already have.
I love watching the 10K even though it's pretty obvious that the Dutch are going to take it it's a great event to watch much more fun than the short distances in my personal opinion
Remember when the nerfed track cycling because gb were too good
the most embaressing what the Norwegians not starting on a distance because they did not feel they had a chance
*too
They wanted to drop the 10K and do 3K instead. My suggestion: don't drop 10K, do 3K anyway :D But who am I...
3:23 when you got the actual king and queen cheering you on, no one can stop you.
The pronunciation of Dutch names lies somewhere between German and English, which works geographically I guess.
Kinda true. Alltough we have alot of sounds unknown to anyone else too
nivolord not german, german can have really weird accents n stuff
Fun fact: teachers over here stop their classes to watch the Olympics when it's time for a Dutch skater to skate. Skating really is quite a big deal in the Netherlands haha
Well yes I did. We had a huge projector set up in the student's canteen. Teachers joined to watch.
never happend on my schools
@@budgetking2591 Then I assume you don't live in the North?
@@nynkebouma5271 Yeah, that's why op was wrong in saying its such a big deal in the Netherlands, its only a big deal in the north, im one of the few that i know that like's it.
Thats to the teacher themselves. Just a few teachers do thus
Only 1 country has had 4 clean sweeps in one olympic game, The Netherlands:
Men's 5000m: Sven Kramer, Jan Blokhuijsen, and Jorrit Bergsma
Men's 500m: Michel Mulder, Jan Smeekens, and Ronald Mulder
Men's 10000m: Jorrit Bergsma, Sven Kramer and Bob de Jong
Women's 1500m: Jorien ter Mors, Ireen WĂŒst and Lotte van Beek
Just one tiny question... What is the answer to the question asked in the title?
The answer is explained in this entire video. The answer can't be one sentence.
Cypha they just tell you that they are dominant... Not the why of it.
Yes
Well then there is no answer m8
Patrick Grimbergen Yea tbf, they did show they have a lot of facilities which is explaination for their dominance, among other things
Toch wel trots om een Nederlander te zijn đ

Alex Van Waveren gelijk
Ik niet.
meh... 1 sport.
I was brought up in the Eighties in the northern part of the country. It is not just the ovals, it is in the lifestyle of the people. Whenever there was ice on open water during winter, you were on it. Every village has a communal ice ring, a shallow field that is filled up with water during the winter. I had skates since I was three. We also had a lot of irrigation canals you could skate on, from dawn till dusk. When there was Ice, you got a day free from school for skating. School competitions were organised. Village competitions were organised. Hack even street competitions were organised on the canal at the end of our street. If the winter conditions prolonged, recreational (and competitive) tours could be skated from town to town. It was so much fun. Now I donât live there anymore and winters have gotten warmer too. But still, being able to host the first marathon on natural Ice is still a thing of honour in the Netherlands. And of course everybody is still waiting for the next Elfstedentocht, but since that encompasses 200 km on natural ice, the waiting will be long and maybe never again rewarded.
3:23 Our King and Queen. Just sitting in regular orange clothing supporting the dutch team! You gotta love it.haha
You pronounce Dutch name as if they're German
Actually, another thing to consider is that the "Elfstedentocht" (Eleven City Tour) is the most famous and anticipated sporting event in the entire country; and pretty much the only thing people can talk about all winter is if we are finally going to have one again -- although Global Warming means we may very well never will again, which makes me unbearably sad. D; I mean, given that it's easily the longest-distance Speed Skating / Leisure Skating event in the world at as-close-as-makes-no-difference 200 km long, it probably plays a part too.
You forgot woman #1 Yvonne van Gennip. Calgary 1988! She took three times gold and broke world records
Good to see that *their investments did pay off.* Netherlands did invest into ice skating rings. It only makes sense that they get the returns of their investment. It's also good for the public health in the Netherlands. Imagine the amount of ice skating disco clubs in the Netherlands :-)
We do not like to combine such things. After all imagen this, why don't we dominate ice skating by now?
We have the best skaters in the world, we have the best hockey players in the world.
Yet we do not combine those two, food for thought is all i'm saying XD
They changed the rules after 2014 just to keep us from colecting all the medals Now thats a compliment
which rules did they change
@@melsbov the amount of scaters allowed at the olympics per country
Dankje CZcams aanbevelingen, voor het samenbrengen van de heren en dames der Nederlanden
actually its 8 silver now one bronze became silver this year when a Russian skater was found to have been using illegal substances
Sven Kramer never won Olympic gold on 1000m. Also: a video about Dutch skating, not mentioning the Elfstedentocht...? Anyway, the main reason the Dutch are so dominant in speed skating I think is because there are only about seven or eight countries worldwide that really take speed skating seriously, Holland probably being the only country in which it is considered a really, REALLY big deal.
Random PC-User we even have special suits during training that can shock skaters if they don't bend their knees far enough
That makes senses. There are still some 15 countries wordlwide that take speed skating seriously. But in the last ten/twenty years speed skating has lost a lot of popularity in favor of ice hockey, short track and even skiing, except in The Netherlands. Where are Austria, Sweden, Finland, Germany and former superpower Norway nowadays?!
Random PC-User kramer never skates 1000m ithink u mean 10.000m and he Will win tomorrow đ
Nope! A Dutch-Canadian speed skater is to thank for that. Great job by Ted-Jan Bloemen (setting an Olympic record and also holding the World record at the distance), and Kramer couldn't crack the top 3; Jorrit Bergsma won the Silver though and Italy the Bronze.
Gameflyer001 ive seen it tumolero won bronze btw

3:24 these people are the king and queen of the Netherlands

Poland has got one, built in 2017
DeLorean lots of people from all over the world train here tough
and for such a small country with only 17 Million people, I am proud of my country
I believe Katie Couric, because she confirmed that the Dutch are born with skate-like appendages instead of feet. So, that's why they made wooden shoes, so those skate-feet would fit. According to Katie, the Dutch have never needed cars, because they skate everywhere like Hans Brinker The Christian Andersen said in the Bible.
hahahhaahahah this is really funny to read, when you never skate on nature ice bc its to warm
*Nils van der Poel has entered the chat*

But unlike most English speaking people she gave it a real effort, so I can appreciate that even if it's not entirely correct :)
yes I could hear the German in her voice xD

Ahh, that's ok...
Maybe because we have about 40 indoor speedskating tracks more than the USA in total, and some schools have skating for gymlesson. And if you are good at it and live in the north of the netherlands you can go to a special school in Groningen.
we dutch love iceskating i remember when i was young we could iceskate pretty much every winter but nowadays it doesnt freeze anymore for good ice global warming is a sad thing
Spent a fraction of the video actually answering the question posed by the title.
Not to take anything away from the Dutch athletes but it also helps that this sport is almost impossible to practice in most any country which are not the Netherlands. I like to speed roller skates (just for fun, I am oldish), I had chance to try short track skates on ice but I have not idea
where I could get into a long course ice track or even where could I buy the skates.
In roller skating and short track you see a lot of Dutch but you see a lot of other country as well which
probably could also produce good long distance skaters...if they had any facility.
Actually, most of the Dutch professional skaters come from only one of our twelve provinces: Friesland. If Friesland were an independent country, it would have only 650,000 inhabitants, but it would still be the most successful country in long track speed skating. (If we start counting in the 1970s. Before that, Norway was more successful.)
Do you know why the best skaters are from Friesland? I'm Frisian and would like to know. :)
@@florencevandermeer9447 I suspect the explanation is simply that ice skating is deeply ingrained in the Frisian culture.
Unrelated but my dogs dad is from there. Heâs a stabyhoun so it makes sense.
Well The Netherlands, or Holland,
is Not such a little country!
In terms of population it is almost as big as all Scandinavian countries together. There are hills by the way: up to 370 meters......
I love watching speed skating. They look like a bunch of frozones racing. Itâs awesome
After Pyeongchang we can add a feeeew more to that list of medalsđđȘ

Another medal sweep by the dutch in skating at 2018 olympics
You didnât say why! You just explained that it *did* happen!
cause they have 17 tracks in the tiniest country ever... the us has two...
1952 the Dutch were "firmly behind the Norwegians", are you kidding? Wim van der Voort missed gold by 0.2 seconds because of snow on the 1500m.
Video title is about why the Dutch win so much, but only gives a summary of gained medals which we can all find on wikepidea. But no explanation as to why.
the secret is pindakaas
The transportation thing is true. My mom used to skate places bc she couldnt drive and it would take too long to walk
The video is no answer at all to the caption...
What part of facilities with olympian size tracks did you miss?
There is most of your answer, if you invest in such things, and people are trained properly at them, you are bound to have constant and fresh supply of athletes that can dominate a particular sport. In this case skating.
A long history of ice skating + investing in good facilities = your answer. :)
Owen Westerhout well this year the dutch team trained with special suits that could keep track with how far the skaters would bend their knees during the race, you can probably find more about it with a quick search
Nobodys talking about accent of narrator. How beautifully she pronounced their names
0:17 anyone else notice they are all summer Olympic years on the medal display?
You say there's not even a hill in the netherlands??? The southern part of the Netherlands is almost a cyclist paradise for people who just cycle for their hobby. Got quite some hills here
It's a shame that even though the title is 'Why are The Netherlands a Speed Skating Dominant Force?' the entire video is only about their succes, not about why they are dominant
The netherlands have private sponsored speed skating teams like Jumbo-Visma which uses resources of the famous Jumbo-visma cycling team. In difference to other countrys where the athletes have to search individualy for sponsors
Surely there can not be only 2 skating rings in the entire of the USA?
2 skating rings that are olympics size
That sounds so outlandish to me, but than again I'm Dutch.
Dextriathlon we only have 2 400 meter indoor ovals, i skate at one of them, im really grateful to live near it

And then came Martina Sablikova from Czech Republic. Winning 15 gold medals on worlds speed skating championship in last decade, 3 golds, a silver and a bronze from the Olympics and 8th times broke the world record in speed skating... And she didn't even reached her 30's yet :)
I think short track is better than long track, there is more strategy and variety in short track
*"The longer distances are particular favourites of the Dutch"* đČ Why would anyone like that? I can't even run past 100m without an oxygen mask!
Make that 20...and im dutch
When its really really cold we have a 11 city's tourney
Mountains and hills have nothing to do with speed skating
How about Jamaica in Sprinting and Kenya and Ethiopia in the Marathon
PusdienlaikaĆ ovs Daphne Schippers đ
Joost TL Daphne Schippers the Aryan superspecimen is the best
Heus Watergeus agreed
Katie should have mentioned that with global warming (concocted by her political party), the Dutch will soon transition to be the dominant water skiers.
Why Norway finally is the biggest winter games champion in history is because they have a lot of mountains to ski on and ski events in Olympic games have all variations unlike only to few events of long speed skating. If long speed skating had more event types the dutch could become match norway as a true winter games powerhouse.
And the Canadian guy was also part Dutch at the Sochi games haha
0:52 huh henry van loon?
hahaha
99.9% Dutch in here commenting probably lol.
answer to the title: we are obsessed with the sport, we have many good quality facilities, we have competitive national teams and heavily invest in talented youth.
The thing about the Netherlands: We try so hard to be noticed and acknowledged by the rest of the world but we fail so hard. Like this, we decided to focus on one sport to invest in so we could get on the podium, but we kind of overdid it so now we're the only country who really watches speed skating.
Not a single word in that sentence is correct.
ElectricSheep SGC Well, I don't know anything about sports. I'm just saying what I percieve, so I don't think I can be completely incorrect.
You made a statement that's incorrect followed by an example which is incorrect.

Dire Wolfy surprisingly many
Depends what you mean by skate, cause probably the majority has or sometimes skates but if you mean as a real hobby it's probably quite a lot less football is still the no.1 sport by far.
i think most people have ice skated in their lives but it is only seen as a sport by a few.
most people do it for fun. although global warming has made outdoor skating less.. well.. possible. a lot less ice lately.
Dire Wolfy Well that depends on what you mean. I think everyone has been on the ice at some point. Its a land of canals and rivers which freeze over during the winter. Your parents take you skating during the winter like they take you swimming during the summer. So skating is common but skating as a sport not so much. Funny the dutch have a need for speed....we don't see much figure skating happening.
I live in Holland and i can't skate :P
I love the examples given at the introđ USA womenâs hockey beat Canada in Pyongyang. The USA is dominant in so many sports I think is ridiculous they were left out completely.
