  • How to use the Ubahn (Subway) in Vienna, Austria. Step by step guide to purchasing your ticket, validating the ticket, and riding on the train. Vienna's public transportation is extremely efficient, clean, and easy to use! Ticket prices have gone up since I made this video, but the system still works exactly the same!
    Have a great time in Vienna! :-)
    ***Prices have gone up since the filming of this video, but the system still works the same!
    ***Note: while you can validate your ticket at the machine where you purchase it, I prefer to not validate until right before I ride - I often like to buy a few tickets to have on hand to use when I want.
    ***One more note - about getting in and out of the actual Ubahn train: The doors do not open automatically. You need to either press the button or pull the lever to open the door.
    Jen used to live in Vienna, and to this day, it's still her favorite city!
    Jen and Milos spend six months each year leading large groups tours around Central Europe. The other half of the year is split living between Jen's home country (USA) and Milos' home country (Croatia.)
    Jennifer is also a trained and accomplished opera singer!
    You can find her on iTunes, Spotify, and Amazon under her maiden name of "Jennifer Graf"
    She is also founder, owner, and director of Olde Towne Carolers: oldetownecarolers.com/

    For tourist I might also add, that in Vienna ticket gets considerably cheaper for longer periods of time - 4ex a 24h costs as much as 3 one-way tickets. Therefore depending on your stay think about buying 24h, 48h, 72h or even weeklies.
    In the bigger stations you also have info points you can get information about the public transport system from and buy tickets - if you dont feel confortable with the mashine.

      For sure! I just wanted to make a quick simple video for the folks who first arrive to Vienna and don't know how the system works at all. (That was me in 2010! I was so confused the first time I rode the Ubahn! One of my local friends had to introduce me to it that first time in Vienna. Once you stay somewhere longer, or live there for a time, you of course get to know more things about how the system works and what it has to offer.)

    • @stephanweinberger
      @stephanweinberger Před 4 lety +2

      There are some caveats though: the weekly and monthly tickets are valid for a *calendar* week/month, so if you arrive e.g. on saturday do *not* buy a week ticket, as it will only be valid for two days.
      An interesting option might be the "8 day ticket" which comes as a strip of 8 separate validation fields (fold the paper at the lines before inserting it into the validator). The nice thing about this ticket: the fields can be validated independently. You don't have to use it on 8 consecutive days (if you stay in Vienna for e.g. 10 days but plan to do a couple of day trips to other cities you could just omit those days where you dont need public transport in Vienna). The ticket can also be used by more than one person simultaneously (just validate one strip for each person).

    • @squirrelwood8008
      @squirrelwood8008 Před 3 lety +2

      It is important to note that you need to validate the strips in ascending order starting from the strip labelled "1". If you start with the "8" you basically validate all 8 strips at once.
      You can do that if you have seven more people tagging along with you.

      It's valid for "one journey". The validators print the time and a code which allows inspectors to figure out your approximate route and the duration of your journey. This is also the reason why you can select pre-validated tickets or to validate the tickets yourself (if you want to use it at a later time be sure to choose "validate later" on the vending machine).

    Regarding the direction of trains: some trains don't go the full length of the line (e.g. on the U1 some trains terminate at "Alaudagasse", on the U2 some at "Aspernstraße" and on the U6 some in "Alt Erlaa"; also trains might terminate early in case of a service interruption), but you don't really need to know all potential termini: there are signs on the platform entrances that list all stations, with an arrow pointing towards the correct platform.
    Another notice: the tickets are valid for *all* public transport within the city boundaries. I have seen tourists buy a new ticket when they change to bus/tram/train - this is *not* necessary.

They don't have a fixed duration, but the validator machines print location and date/time, so ticket inspectors will notice if you try to bend the rules :-)
      But there are also tickets for 24/48/72-hours (from validation), day/week/month passes (calendar-days/weeks/months), etc.
      Also there are tickets targeted at tourists which include rebates at museums etc. Another good option for tourists is the 8-day ticket which consists of 8 strips which can be validated individually, each valid for 1 person on 1 day (i.e. you can share the ticket and also use it on non-consecutive days).

    I don't know, I downloaded Wiener Linien app, bought a 24h pass through it and just went, nobody checked me there

      You usually won't get checked. (Which is why I said it's on the honor system.) They just do random checks throughout the year to search for people riding illegally. But most of the time you won't get checked.
      Thanks for watching!

    You should learn to read, before you buy the ticket you can choose whether the ticket should be valid immediately or whether you want to validate it yourself, so read first then talk

      You will usually get lucky, but they DO still have surprise checks, so you want to make sure you are validated!

    Hey i have heard they all speak German ?

    • @JenTheSingingTraveler
      @JenTheSingingTraveler  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, the official language in Austria is German. (Although there is an Austrian dialect. However, I've never had a problem speaking Hoch Deutsch there and doing just fine.) Many do speak English, but not everyone.

      @@MusicWorld-zi7eg Unless you're specifically getting a coveted UN job, or a job at a private English language school, you will need to speak German to get work.

    1) You buy a ticket 2) get in 3) get out at your destination. It's actually not that hard.
