- Toyota Prius second GEN dashboard lights not working. This is a quick fix that I found. I believe this problem is due to a bad combination switch so this is the quick fix without doing a repair.
This is the best method, and the presentation is short and sweet. Thank you.
You're very welcome!
Way to go. You the man. I could not figure out what this problem was. It worked immediately. Thank you so much.😊
I tried it and it WORKED! Thank you Sir.
Glad it worked for you!
Thanks for this DIY.
This works, you have saved me from lot of troubles
Glad to help
Bless your soul I literally watched 6 videos of people holding the climate button and flashing their headlights and none of that worked but this one did lol
Just be aware that this is only a temporary fix. Eventually your combination meter will finally go out and you will have to replace it. It happened to me so after a while this will not work anymore and the capacitor that is inside of the combination meter pretty much goes all the way out. so use it while it works. Start looking for a technician to repair your car. Thank you for watching.
@@Ruffjourneys how much does something like that cost?
Saved my bacon! I was stuck in the parking lot with my kids and groceries
I’m glad it helped. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much, this happened to me while I was on my way to a job interview. thank you for your help.

Dude, i have just ran into this problem on my way home from work, today, just now at 5:07pm... your video was the 1st to come up, i did it right and Gooddang...It DID WORK!!! WOW!! thanks, i was about to call thw dealer and get ripped off, like they usually do. Thanks a million!!!
Glad I could help.
It worked for me🎉!! Thanks!
Glad it helped!
Thanks so much! That worked.
You're welcome!
This is the third time this has happened to me. This time it happened after the car sat for a month and the 12V battery had drained. Trickle charged it overnight, started it up and had no dash lights. Thanks for the video. Others forget to say the door has to be open.
I’m really glad it worked for you. After a while it may not work anymore. It does not work for my vehicle anymore. At some point the dash cluster may have to get changed.
@@Ruffjourneys Of that, I'm sure. The first time it happened I mistakenly followed instructions for the 2nd Gen without the smart key feature. I put the key in the slot, started the car, the key got stuck, and the car would not turn off! I can't remember how I got around that and got the dash lights working again.
I love the good gas mileage but I hate how computerized everything is and how difficult it is to fix anything.
Both of my vehicles are old and I'm not looking forward to having to buy something newer, especially if I get stuck having to get one of these cars that track everything you do, and everything you say, and report it back. That crap should be illegal!
This just helped me. Thanks pal
Glad it helped
Thanks, it's work for me 👍🏼
Great!
Good job work like a charm
Awesome
Worked like a charm buddy
Awesome glad it worked out.
I was having the same problem. Research led me to believe it's the capacitor. My workaround had been to disconnect the 12V battery in trunk; then reconnect it. This works but began to be more of a nuisance. I decided to wire a light -switch (common AC light switch 120V/15A found cheaply in hardware stores) with a short length of wire (common lamp-wire 14-gauge). Wired between grounding screw and ground wire to battery. This method allows easy access to disconnect/reconnect battery (i.e. reset electrical system).
Capacitors acts to reduce ripple effect on the voltage. The main problem seems to be as the original capacitor(s) degrade over time, they may no longer reliably reduce the initial ripple (upon startup) to allow the computer to fully initialize; hence the multifunction display isn't brought online.
While the light-switch was a fairly easy, quick, and cheap workaround, it seems to also have resolved the issue!
Perhaps the addition of the switch and wiring induces a small measure of capacitance? In any case, I haven't had that issue again in months, if it recurs I can reset via the switch.
Note: I folded the excess metal of switch and used electrical tape wrapped around it to form protective 'wings' so switch doesn't accidentally get switched OFF. Works great!
Thanks for watching.
I mean this in the most platonic way possible I love you
Thank you I’m really glad it worked for you. Just be aware that you will have to change your combination meter at some point.
G this worked thank you 🙏
Thank you and thank you for watching
This works, fantastic!!!
Glad it helped!
Thank you brother it worked
You're welcome!
This worked for me..Thank You...
Glad it helped.
@@Ruffjourneys I fixed it permanently by replacing the capacitor of the speedometer board, using 220uf 16v. Theres videos here on how to.
You save my life I was in the parking lot with my 2 year old
Awesome I’m glad this worked for you.

I hope so too!
What if your open door alert sound and light comes on and still nothing else comes on? I didn’t have an issue with my car door light from the beginning, it is the only light aside from my head light one that comes on
You might need to take it to a technician. Sorry it didn’t work out for you.
06 all lights was coming on the dash and dunging but ready light was not coming on. I tried changing battery still wouldn't start then I unhooked battery for 15 minutes and tried as your video said ready light came right on and started.
That is awesome. I’m really glad it worked for you. You might look into having to change the combination meter. Thank you for watching.
Mine started doing this and just ignored it and kept driving. Now the ac sometimes doesn’t kick on. The ac seems to be working perfect when it turns on but sometimes it’ll be on on and it just doesn’t blow. Have you dealt with this?
Not sure. You possibly may need to see a technician.
Yes, I do have this problem and this is what I do each time for a quick fix. How can I get this fix permanently without going to the dealer. Or, any advice or should I just leave it for this quick fix to save money. Thanks
It is going to be a very expensive fix. I would not suggest going to the dealer. I would suggest finding a smaller mechanic shop that works on Prius. Basically the top of your dashboard has to come off. They have to replace what it’s called a combination meter. The park can be bought on eBay for under $200. Labor at a small shop could be anywhere from $500-$1500. It’s not the hardest job in the world to do but it’s not the easiest either.
@@Ruffjourneys I appreciate the response. Would it hurt the car by leaving just like it and not replace it? Thank you very much.
This worked 4 me
Glad it helped.
Mine is a little different.
Dashboard lights working fine but once I turn on the headlights, it goes off. I’ve tried this but not still working.
Once I turn off the headlights, it works. So frustrating when driving at night.
You might need to take it into a local shop to see a technician.
Wow. That worked
Awesome!! Glad it helped
You saved me
Thanks for watching. I’m glad it worked.
Hi sir!! Appreciate this so much! Do you or does anyone else understand why this happens??
I believe that there is a sensor or the dash cluster itself needs to be replace. With my very little research that’s what I found out.
Tried just now. Didn't work for me. The open door indicator light didn't even come on.
At this point, you may need a combination meter. There are other videos on CZcams that may be able to help but at the end of the day if it’s not coming on anymore, the combination meter is now bad. Thank you for watching.
@@Ruffjourneys Yeah, in the 2 weeks since I left that comment, I found another solution. It worked. I hope it continues to be good for a long time.
It didn’t work for me but nothing seems to be working for me at this point. Ugh
Sorry at this point you might need to see a technician.
This works fs
Awesome
but the door light did not come on, I did not see the door light.
You may have to try it a couple times.
Yes sir
I’m glad it worked for you.
Quickest way I’ve found is turn the headlights on before starting the car.
Awesome thank you.
That doesn’t always work
@@4reptar207 you are 100% right. It does not always work and it will not work forever. The combination meter needs to be replaced if this is the problem. This is a temporary fix to get you up the road. Not a permanent solution thank you for watching.
thank you but why does this happen it scared me
Usually this happens because there’s a capacitor inside the combination meter that needs to be replaced. The cluster inside your dashboard basically is going out. Eventually, it will stop working. This is only a temporary fix.
@@Ruffjourneys thank you😊
Did not work for me.
It doesn’t always work all of the time. You might have to do the major repair underneath the dashboard
That didn’t work for me
You might have to try it multiple times. If that doesn’t work might be replacing your dash.
Didn’t work
Awesome! Thank you for watching.
Did this 20 times. Didn’t work.
It doesn’t work for me any. Might need to repair your combination meter or cluster.
As somebody who's owned a second gen Toyota Prius and put about 90,000 mi on it when he showed me the problem of dash lights not coming on and then also went over to the energy monitor and it was not showing any sort of charge status on the hybrid battery. That just tells me that he did not put his foot on the brake and he only pushed the power button. Wants to put it in accessory mode to listen to the radio. The rest of this video seems like it's sort of clout chasing but it doesn't seem like this is a big channel or he is even trying to get a ton of views. I think he just did that to demonstrate but then again I'm not sure what's going on but there is quite a few comments in here that say that they tried it and it worked so it's really hard to say what's truly going on in this video because clearly after he demonstrates what to do, he does put his foot on the break and the car starts up normal ready mode and then the energy monitor displays an actual status for the hybrid battery instead of not displaying a status like it was originally also my 2007 Prius it had the canvas fault where it would just randomly have can bus communication errors and occasionally throw a light because of it generally. Otherwise mine, even with 270,000 plus miles worked perfectly fine except for occasionally throwing the can bus air and having an issue with the horn ribbon where it needed to be replaced and the horn did not work in the car so again, I'm not really sure if he's just trying to actually make a useful helpful demonstration video or what's really going on. But there is 17 comments of people saying that they tried this and it worked and only one comment so far of people being like it didn't work but given the fact that his initial demonstration did not show it showing a status on the battery, I do have to point out the fact that his initial demonstration he did not actually push the break. Otherwise I'm sure the car would have came on and displayed everything as normal had he done it and he just did it to kind of replicate what you would see and then to try to show you what he does to make the dash work again.
Thank you for watching
My thoughts exactly dude
Well, I didn’t fake it. Sorry. Sorry that you feel that way. Thank you for watching. Hopefully you don’t have this issue with your vehicle.
actually as someone who drives one of these, this actually had just happened to me today and i obv know how to turn on my car, and even when you just put it into accessory mode some of the lights on the dash come on. def not a clout chaser👍
Why would he want to lie about that. This exact problem happens to me
What has worked for me: 1.While door is open, insert fob in ignition 2. Turn on headlights (leave on) 3. Press on brake for about 2-3 secs (don't take foot off brake) 4. Press power button
Thanks a lot. We will give it a try. Thank you for watching.
This worked for me! Thank you so much!
