Permanent fix - at least for me. Replace the battery in your key fob. I had the dark dashboard problem until my fob would not unlock the car anymore so I put a new battery in it and the dashboard problem never happened again. Your owner's manual explains how to change the battery.

It worked for me too. I fixed my dark dashboard problem by following the steps in this video and several other videos but it kept coming back. I started thinking about what you said about your key fob battery and realized that my key fob and its battery were as old as my Prius - seventeen years. I opened the fob and checked the voltage on the battery and it was 2.8 volts. Probably anything less then 3 volts and the fob will be flaky or not work at all. It won't be able to unlock the doors or communicate with the computer to tell it to turn on the dashboard (among other things). So I put in a new battery and the dashboard lights up and works the way it should and hasn't gone dark since. Thanks so much for sharing your experience.

I was using various hacks like this and also unplugging the battery for more than a year. My high mile old Prius's value was so low that it wasn't worth the repair cost. Eventually, these hacks stop working or the problem becomes more frequent. Recently, i found a local place that can repair it for $225. Got it fixed and now I have peace of mind. It buys me time to shop for new car.

There's a capacitor in the dash that goes bad and needs to be replaced after a while. If this doesn't work, or the key fob, or the door trick (car off, hold the brake, lock doors using door button, turn lights on, unlock doors using door button, start) then it's time to swap out the capacitor. We'll cost about a grand if you take it somewhere but isn't that hard to do yourself with a soldering iron, some patience, and a CZcams video.

In other words, if the car is hot, the dash outage is more likely to happen and the reset does not work. This is also when the car decides not to turn off. For that, driving around the block and trying again usually works.

Worked like a charm. Now, I will stand by Toyota for life. They simply make the best vehicles money can buy and have since the 70's. Their reliability is legendary. What I don't understand is HOW this is happening. I did the trick and everything WORKS... which means nothing is broken, fried, shorted, etc. It IS working now. What makes it NOT work?? I don't get it. Is there something I can do so it doesn't do this again?
    Great video, thanks again.

There’s a capacitor in your dash circuit that has degraded and now longer sufficient so it malfunctions at random times. Problem gets worse over time and more frequent. I soldered a new capacitor on the circuit and it fixed the issue.

@@ViratPatelYT thanks. I read this on another video too. Need to remove the 100 and replace with a 220. I’ll do it this week. Thanks again.

@@ViratPatelYTwhere exactly is the bad capacitor located

@@annknight2239 you have to take the dashboard off to remove the screen behind the speed/odometer screen. That’s where the capacitor is.

Great! I like your presentation because it's short, to the point, clear and concise. No weird music, personality/ego, or plugs for products. Now I will try it out on my son's Prius and see if it works. But what is going on here? Is some electric or electronic component starting to fail?

There’s a capacitor in the dashboard that’s gone bad. I replaced it on mine (requires extensive disassembly and soldering) and haven’t had this issue since.
