The DK Summit double shortcut in Deluxe is the DK Mountain shortcut in Wii, it’s mandatory to do but there are a bunch of methods that yield different results on how to approach it.
The track is a very odd case. It clearly was not made for this game and functions about as well as an average MKWii custom track, but once you learn its quirks, it's actually still a really fun track and takes skill to drive. Yes there's some bs due to the canon glider and oversized bump section, but it makes for entertaining races.
Honestly, with how low you can fall in the gap before Lakitu picks you up and how jank the camera is during the turns, it almost feels like the devs intended for people to take the double cut.
DK Summit is probably my favorite track in the game, it's so much fun. The double shortcut is perfectly crafted, the halfpipe techs are amazing, and the cannon allows you to get good items, and I think this game is a lot of fun ruining other people's day.

I think Dk summit is great and definitely a top 5 track, but I think mushroom gorge is still the best when it comes to the remakes because it works so well with this game.
Ever since it first was released on the Wii, it's been my favorite track purely for the looks. I love the snowboarders even though they're annoying, because they add character and make the track feel more alive. To me, it's Mario Kart in its purest form

im glad they did a good port on this map. other wii ports like coconut mall are horrible. and tbh, i think that a lot of booster course maps are really badly done, i did a tierlist and before the pass we had like 2 - 3 F tier maps, now we have 14 lol
Here’s me debunking your 2 biggest points: your last point was: “If you don’t like DK summit, it’s probably a skill issue.” And I actually agree. I don’t like this track (at least, in terms of driving on it), and I’ve also never been able to pull off that double cut. But should I need to be good to appreciate a track? Hear me out: that double cut was never intended. And if something was not intended to be used in a certain way for a game, or exploited, if you will, then it is, in a way cheating. And I don’t like having to cheat to win. Yes, I do enjoy my fair share of glitches, but there’s a difference between enjoying seeing someone do something in a cool unintended way, and being (pretty much) forced to. It doesn’t even really feel like Mariokart if you’re forced to do something like this. Imagine if everyone in MKWii online lobbies only used ultra shortcuts every time, instead of actually racing on the tracks. That would not only make the game unplayable, but also defeat the purpose of the game. In the immortal words is Sakurai: *No, this isn’t how you’re supposed to play the game.* I prefer to be actually able to do things the intended way, at least in Mariokart, because that’s what makes it Mariokart. As for the half-pipes, they are definitely jank, and no one will deny that. My argument is: it feels so different from the rest of the game to have to use them at all. It’s fun, sure, but if you’re off at all, it takes a while to re-adjust your lines, no matter how much you hop. I’ve actually become scared of the third time you enter the half-pipe right before the line, because of that one clip, and because something similar happened to me. That’s also why Waluigi Pinball isn’t much higher on my list: the half-pipe lines are just so weird and impossible for me to get used to. I actually like the other points you made, and I agree with them. But those positives just can’t outweigh the negatives for me, and DK summit and Waluigi pinball are near the bottom in my list of the best tracks to race on. If you take suggestions, I think a track analysis on DS Mario Circuit would be a fun one as when it was announced on Wave 4, everyone was annoyed as it was the last DS slot in the BCP and it could’ve gone to Delfino Square or Airship Fortress. With three months to reflect on the track, I wonder if either of those tracks would still been better options or DS Mario Circuit was indeed the best we could’ve gotten as the final DS track?
I really like the course. I loved the Wii version though. Today I messed up and went too fast on the double cut. I cleared it with one jump on 150cc. The game alawys surprises me :)
Do you know what isn't amazing, mushrooming on the half pipe corner bit at the end of the lap in 200cc only to get send flying and then boosted the other way. TWD98 and Shortcat can attest to this.
Here’s some points after the release of wave 6: First, the double shortcut which is not always doable by actual players, even when practicing, makes the difference quite large and the players in behind is more unlikely to catch up, Also, amount of coins you can get are very debatable. The very first item box in the 1st lap has a decent chance to give a few players a coin even if you’re not in first. Even if the first place always get a coin item easily, there are odds that they accidentally miss the item box and can’t even get a single item, getting only a single coin because of missing the double item box. Falling off and getting hit is 3 coins each, and there are extra factors like a lightning. As mentioned, the distance between players could be quite big, so a chance for a lightning is quite decent. The broken first item box is not always a good thing either. After the first lap, getting strong items close to first means that bagging is an extremely easy option for players. Other non-bagging players could use shells to target first place, and with correct strategies, you would be immediately in first with a star or a boo. This allows things like consecutive red shell dodges, blue shell or even lightning dodges on occasion. Therefore, the balance could be broke easily. I avoided 100% true words and mainly said that it’s odds, because my main point is that both the critiques and your rebuttals could both be true, and both be false at the same time, making it not really different from an ordinary track. Adding that fact that it’s pretty unwelcoming to new players or people who only have online but not the expansion pack, this might not be just the best track yet.
*Talks about the biggest problem of how glitchy the half pipes are for 3 seconds* in all seriousness though, the half pipes have gotten janky and sent me god knows where so many times that I try not to get “as amazing” jumps on them when I play. This along with how unsatisfying the course is to play (yes even on the shortcut) makes it one of my lesser favorite courses. No, I don’t hate it but even watching world record speed runs of the course just isn’t as satisfying as pretty much any other course in the game

I can't believe you thought DK Summit was bad I absolutely love this track though it does get on my nerves because I don't know how to do the Double Cut properly and while it is probably a skill issue on my end it still hurts
Honnestly I love DK summit but the biggest criticisms I would have given is that I think you dont drive enough in this track... Honestly it feels like 60% of the time you are just flying in the air and there is almost no normal turns in the whole track...
This track is actually fuego in deluxe. It would without a doubt be my favorite Wii track in the game if not for the lakitu spawns on this track being aggregious. While not being a fan of how low lakitu grabs you I also do not like how some out of bounds put you further ahead and give an advantage for failing, like how London used to skip the bridge if you went out of bounds in a specific spot. That's not great design Imo and I hope it gets fixed. If it doesn't though, it's still a great track and honest genuine skill issue for those who don't put the time in to learn it properly
I don’t mind this track. I don’t really enjoy it either. It’s an absolute HELL to time trial, but fun to play non-time trial. I’d give it a solid C or B tier honestly
I disagree on the shortcut being a must take. On lap 1 and 2 maybe and if you are behind then sure on lap 3 but If you are in first with good items it truly may not be worth risking losing the race over a shortcut when you are already in the lead.
great video! however, a very important problem you didn’t mention is that it *doesn’t belong in the game.* the double shortcut, lack of coins, janky item set, big bumps, and funky half pipes, although sometimes seen in other tracks in the game, are only there on their own. dk summit throws these things into the blender and makes something that just doesn’t belong. p.s. it kinda looks ugly too… those mountains in the beginning are offensive to the eyes.
I get so annoyed with the shortcut. I've practiced a million times and can gain absolutely no feel for it whatsoever. I either get it by complete accident and most likely end up in an awful position afterward, or fly right off the track, or fall in the gulch, or slam right into the red netting and ruin everything. I have maybe a 30% success rate of avoiding either of those last two options and try as I might, I feel like I learn nothing each time I do it. It doesn't help that those bumps are all there, just before it. I really don't actually have a problem with the bumps at all... UNLESS I'm trying to do the double shortcut. And what's really crazy is, I feel like the single shortcut is actually harder.
I like the track but halfipe on 200cc and the shyguys are horrible they are the worst pacelocks ever and the going high up and backwards and... happens pretty often to me
I'm sorry dude but I can't with this track. I guess it's a skill issue and I will just always suck at this track. I've been grinding time trials for ages and I cannot take the double cut for the life of me. No other consistent cut in the game gives me this much trouble. I either always overshoot it or fall into the pit.

The main issue with the bumps is that it doesn’t feel consistent enough for Time Trialers, or so I’ve heard.

I think one of the reasons people don’t like DKS in 8DX is cuz they’re used to playing it on inside drift in MKW instead of karts.

Do coins give you incremental speed boosts each coin or is it a big boost when you reach 10 coins? Or a mix of both?
