"A player named OJ"
Hey, wait a minute. That's me!!
Never knew the nunchuck had an advantage over the gamecube controller here, always thought they were in the same play field. But the wii wheel is in a whole other league.
@@DwainiumB MKWii will probably be my favorite game forever, i might have jumped over to Playstation after the Nintendo WFC shutdown. But i'm planning to join the current wiimmfi competition if i get it to work.
@@DwainiumB Got it to work, too bad i won't be able to compete on the leaderboard because of the 7 day activation time. Got a 53,2xx (best ever 52.066). Oh, well got a chance next time around then.
They are actually all fairly balanced. For example with Nunchuck it's pretty awkward to look backwards. Wii Wheel is much harder to control, so they increased input range doesn't even make up for that. You'd almost think those are intentional.
Impossible GCN inputs:
X+Y ≤ 2
X+Y ≥ 24
|X-Y| ≥ 11
X = 14 and Y ≠ {5,6,7,8}
Y = 14 and X ≠ {5,6,7,8}
This showcases an odd nonparity. 0,3 *is* viable, yet 14,3, which is the mirror image input, is *not* viable. In fact, the larger numbers as a whole are more restricted. The center point seems to be around the hypothetical 6.5,6.5 point, slightly skewed off the true center of 7,7. It's odd how this happens, as though the controller isn't quite "right".
If the chart had parity around the smallest corner, it would have the following as impossible inputs:
X+Y ≤ 2
X+Y ≥ 26
|X-Y| ≥ 12
Coincidentally, this is exactly what the Nunchuck chart's impossible inputs are.
So, is there a chance there was a mistake made when coding gamecube and classic controller inputs, which resulted in minor setbacks, such as the impossibility of {12,1}?
@@conmattang8492 Either that, or it's possibly due to the way that the Wii itself handles the inputs.
The wii wheel being so optimal makes sense to me even from a non-technical standpoint. It's the same reason racing simmers always use wheels; when you're trying to get extremely minute differences in output (ie in-game wheel angle), a massive range of input (ie the 1080 degrees of steering in racing wheels or actual car wheels; or the, what, 180 degrees in the wii wheel?) is the best way to do it reliably.
Nice to see an in-depth explanation of this.
i'm really surprised at the fact that a lot of people use wii wheel in mushroom gorge
Wii wheel has a wider range of inputs allowing better pivoting on the mountain when doing the glitch
I always assumed this was true because the MG glitch was the only thing I could do better with the wii wheel than a controller
the world record can only be done with the wii wheel, but you can still get a decent time with any other controller
@@mkwiicore no you can beat the wr by 3 seconds with gamecube! (the tas bkt does it!)
In Smash Bros., you can influence which way you are launched with control stick inputs. So imagine our surprise when someone found the Wiimote was the best at directional influence.
that was dope thanks for the easy to follow yet technical explanation. very much appreciated. always thought i knew what soft drifting was, but people talking about diagonals and the nunchuk always confused me. glad i know now
This was actually theorized lots of times sinse the wii wheel has perfect diagonal imputs.
So is Mario Kart Wii like the melee of Mario Kart games? Or does my CZcams algorithm just like this game lol
It's even more than that.
Just look at the current world record progression:
czcams.com/video/aQB_4caP4A8/video.htmlm37s
There's 1000s of cool custom tracks and new modes and better online and the competitive scene is not just sustaining, but blooming. MKWii might have died with Nintendo shutting off WiiFi, but everyone switching to the fan-private-servers which are actually much better did the opposite to the game.
Kind of. MKDS is also really advanced and could also be considered the "Melee" of MK.
Kind of. I prefer mk8 but it could just be my obsession with graphics
Mkwii is the melee of MKs due to it's unique mechanics and freedom, making it fun to know the various glitches and the way they work. Although I don't personally like MKDS, it's considered like a brother to Wii, due to superslides, but I personally think the mechanics ain't more complex or interesting.
MK8, both deluxe and not make the game less free for exploration and it has basically no glitches, the only thing that distinguishes Mario Kart speedruns from simple "Being good at driving and items".
As a very experienced wii wheel player and have held 5 wrs. I can say that wii wheel is a controller that is easy to learn but hard to master. But yes, i thought the wii wheel was easier to use and i asked others and they said other controllers where a lot easier. Im glad this is confirmed. Lolol
This all makes so much sense. I pretty much knew everything that was said about softdrifting, but because no one ever spelled it out like this, it was always just a speculation! Thank you for making this video :)
I don’t even play Mario Kart Wii anymore but it’s fascinating to see the math behind drifting.
Always a pleasure when you upload Malleo
Wow, this video was very interesting and educational.
Thanks, Malleo.
Also I loved the way you pronounced SwareJonge at 8:44.
This is such a good video. Coming back to this for the 3rd time just for the nice analysis
2:02
Yes, My Favorite Song, Donkey Kong Countr 2 - Stickerbrush Symphony
Love your stuff man, keep it up! 😎
Really informative and well done video, thank you Malleo
Very interesting video and informative. Loved it
That's interesting, great video!
finally someone who gives sauce for the BGM
It’s hard to believe the wii wheel is the best controller on this track! Nice video Malleo.
Soft drifting wont build up a mini turbo faster
my life is a lie ...
I always thought that soft drifting was slightly slower but took a significantly wider turn.
Until about a year ago I did not know about soft drifting or delay drifting. My whole life was a lie and have been playing the game wrong since 2008...
Thanks for including the song names!
Why was this so frickin interesting an entertaning.
Love your videos btw
5:01 thank you for this clarification. I was under the impression that you could get a faster mini-turbo by soft drifting
Damn this video came too late, this could be a game changer, 9 years ago.
Really nice video, thanks.
Great video, though the impossible inputs might be more interesting to look at if they were shown like a map. Like how you said the Wii Wheel’s range of inputs was a square, and the others’ were like circles, maybe you could make a 15*15 grid for the full input space and color in the possible inputs for each console to show how the ranges vary more comprehensibly.
Nice video Malleo!
also my old time is at the bottom @ 7:01
I don’t play this game competively what so ever, but I actually knew where you were going with the controller angle because hax$, the melee player, encountered similar issues with fox’s up b in melee
I was thinking about getting a Wii Pro controller to play this game. But thanks to you I see that nunchuck is Master race
As someone who used to get pretty decent time trials with wii wheel this feel good to hear i was superior all along.
I always knew the nunchucks were good. But the wii wheel!? Wow. Thats...humbling
I don't even play this game anymore but i am still watching..
Thank you for this I know it's old but I'm just now getting into the game and I really thought soft drifting was faster than regular drifts LMAO
I put maybe 60 hours into this game as a kid and never even realised that vertical input did anything until today
Wow, I thought I was just being biased due to nostalgia when I found myself preferring Nunchuck over classic controller.
I generally prefer wired controllers, but I just really really hate how shake is up d-pad when Y is a perfect button for it. My left thumb is already occupied, leave it alone gamecube controller!
the musics reminded me something, oh yeah checkpoints
that's really interesting that the controller axis values are truncated to only a nibble in size. i wonder why they did this
i'm a simple woman, i hear chrono trigger music, i click like. the excellent tech explanation is icing on the cake
*hears dkc2 music in this mario kart video* 😍😍
What is your opinion on the brand new teleporter room early, now that it cuts of 10 minutes
I love it! It's so ridiculously simple in theory, yet we never knew it was possible that way. I'm excited to finally have a sub 2 TAS in the future
@@HurricaneForceGaming basically solidified found a small gap in the door of the teleporter room and theorised that it could be possible to clip inside. really_tall then found a way to clip in, skipping flurrie and saving 10 minutes
@@Malleo I'd love to see a video about the new teleporter room early, if you can find the time!
super late to this conversation, just wanted to say i approve of the chrono trigger music o/
thanks
1:32 baby you light up my world like nobody else
6:49 You can notice also how the only to not use it are Norwegian and German, while all the others, wich are btw only American and French, use it
Wow I was unknowingly doing all of this...AND I made all my records with the Wii wheel. Unfortunately after playing Mario Kart 8 I can't play with the Wii wheel anymore...
i love maleo
The reason people think softdrift charges faster was because PFMP accidentally said it in this video czcams.com/video/KsyNkAU7yrM/video.html
*Billy Mitchell has entered the chat.*
I'm using tilt controls!
I gotta use the wii wheel now :]
Why is a diagonal angle important on Mushroom Gorge? The using a diagonal for softdrifting makes sense because it limits the horizontal component of your input, but if you're going to use the max horizontal component anyway on MG, why not just hold straight sideways? Does the vertical component actually do anything on its own?
I was a super casual player and still did this lol
I remember you could mis-calibrate wavebird controllers by holding the stick off centre before turning it on (like to walk forwards automatically you would hold the stick DOWN then turn it on then release) could that possibly allow further range of movements on gamecube controllers?
Unless wavebird is its own category in which case ignore me.
Wii controllers do this exact same thing! The position of your control stick when being turned on is referred to as the "neutral position" in official manuals. :o
I've tried your suggestion in Super Mario Galaxy 2 before, but it doesn't really do anything since even if your neutral position is in, say, the very corner, the controller only has so many position ranges, and it can't go outside what's normally possible.
Could it be possible that a nunchuk analog stick was swapped into a gamecube controller to produce the illegitimate input?
Ideas for TAS speedruns:
Wii Epic Mickey
Diddy Kong Racing DS
Fireboy and Watergirl
If you could make TASes for those games along with commentary, that would be great! Also, really enjoyed the MKWii explanation!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
@@michaelbilik4058 I mean, Jacob does have a point. If you want to see a completed TAS of any of those games, your best bet is to simply create the TASes yourself. That's really the case for any game without a TAS.
@@DwainiumB Are you thinking about the complexity of the Flash game? Because in one of Bismuth's videos based on tool assisted speedruning, he mentions that even the most basic games don't have perfect runs, and that the more complex a game is, the harder optimizing gets. Keep in mind that Fireboy and Watergirl has a physics engine, which kind of leaves people to wonder about the enormous number of possibilities the game has to offer.
Did you contact MrBean & Chadderz to get the cheated ghost off the leaderboard before uploading the video?
"Manual transmission".
It’s Manual Drift Mode, not transmission.
Same for Automatic Drift Mode.
Can any of the third party Gamecube controllers register this impossible input? Or are they banned from use?
I read that the Wii wheel always gives the vehicles max handling. Is that true or just a rumor based on the extended possible inputs?
How can I get those values to display on the screen like that?
regarding the gamecube controller impossible inputs, is it possible that certain third party gamecube controller could produce those inputs? or is this literally a software retriction, not hardware?
Very informative video. Do you know what horizontal/vertical inputs the notch of each controller gives? It seems like the diagonal notches don't give the softest softdrifts possible (11 instead of 10, something like that).
I'm curious to see if 3rd-party controllers can make "impossible" inputs, as well as a tool to analyze ghosts for strange control stick inputs. You've mentioned impossible inputs, but I wonder if, say, an old Nunchuck WR gets caught mimicking Classic or GCN inputs.
Third-party controllers cannot make impossible inputs, as the controller data emulated in Dolphin shows that such inputs are impossible not because of controller brand, but because of software restrictions. I didn't look into notches on controllers, but these notches do produce different angles between GameCube and Classic.
@@Malleo what about a miscalibrated controller? I think it's X+Y+Start to recenter; if you deliberately had it off-center, you might be able to reach impossible ranges.
How to soft drift with wii mote without nunchuck?
How does up/down inputs affect the kart? (I haven't played this game so I have no idea)
how do you get that information you have on the side? i'm new to TAS'ing and i feel it would he a lot.
That Dolphin version can be found at: github.com/SwareJonge/Dolphin-Lua-Core
Under Movie, enable Show Input Display, and you will be able to see this information.

Wii Wheel is Best 💪
So how do you import ghosts into mkwii on Dolphin?
please come back
what about the classic controller?
Wii Mote best controller
Why is peach gardens wr automatic?
Why does DS peach gardens use automatic
DS Peach Gardens is unique in that there is a hedge maze which requires several angle readjustments. When using automatic transmission, you can turn in your wheelie without losing speed, allowing you to make these repeated adjustments without having to re-hop (which drops speed). Because of this, automatic outweighs manual.
@@Malleo Huh. I've always been able to chain mini-turbos through the hedge maze if I come in at the right angle and the Chomps don't get in the way (I main Rosalina on the Flame Runner/Bowser Bike). I thought the mini-turbos would cancel out, or even overcompensate for, any loss from hopping. Is the benefit from not having to hop really greater than having mini-turbos?
@@bright0nsounds mini turbos aren't good because of their speed boost, they are good because of their ability to go back to a wheelie at full speed. Going directly straight through the head maze is monumentally faster than snaking in between the hedges.
bruh why do the drifting angles sound like a Ph meter
i use a nunchuck
Nunchuck gang rise up
I'm a simple guy. I hear Chrono, I like.
And that is why nunchucks have the most WRs
Peter Yeaman That -and because Nunchuck also inputs 3 frames of a wheelie instead of one like GCN and CCP.- *THIS INFORMATION IS WRONG.*
will the code be released
So... How do you register a vertical input on a wii wheel?
You can roll the controller forward or backwards and that will be interpreted as vertical inputs
So MKWii only differenciates between "sharp drifting" and "not sharp drifting", interesting ...
Does any other Mario Kart game do it this way?
@@KevSB07 I was surprised that there's only two "drift sharpnesses". I would have thought it'd be much more fine-grained.
Felix Klenk it is far more fine grained, there are 14 different turn radiuses as far as I could tell from the video. It’s just that the mini turbo charge speed is very rough
What is this “control stick”? I only use motion controls
I’m gonna be honest I didn’t expect it to be talked about later in a positive light
10:06.
Input [0;0] is just doing nothing, right? How is this impossible
xPBestx
7,7 is doing nothing.
I think 0,0 is the bottom left corner of the box ( outside of the circular range of the stick)
Why delete TAs goat
I don’t think the nunchuck is a better controller for the game just because of it allowing more angles. It uses motion for several things, such as wheelies, tricks, and the POW dodge trick. Maybe I’m just bad at using the nunchuck, but I notice that sometimes my input will come out delayed or not at all, causing me to lose time with the nunchuck. But since the classic and GameCube controller does not have the more precise angles but more precise wheelies and tricks, which one is actually the best?
It's really all down to preference really. There are great players of all types of controllers. The motion controls for wiimote+nunchuk really is something you need to get used to. You can't really spam wheelie like you can for Gamecube controller and Classic controller, so you just need to learn the timing for it. Also, in real time runs, the limited inputs of the Gamecube and Classic controls doesn't really negatively impact gameplay. Again, it's all about what you are most comfortable with.
It’s slower cause your not drifting that tight so if you drift tighter your get your mini turbo.but the other part was true
The entire point of softdrifting is for scenarios in which you DONT need to be drifting tight. Softdrifting allows you to get the Mini-Turbo out just as fast while not going as tight as possible.
I thought it was for not slowing down and having the Technique of not slowing down like Delfina plaza or island WR
why do you keep refering to it as "automatic/manual *transmission"* ?
the game itself never referse to it as that.
why not call it automatic drifting and manual drifting?
Lame Malleo is using Windows 10 to TAS. Everyone knows the OG TASers use Windows 7. 😎

sorry, can you repeat that for me?
Great video, but the first half was too slow. Halfway through the video is too late to grab most peoples attention
Soft drifting isn’t that hard
There you go, conclusive proof that the wii wheel is the best controller ever devised by man.
Absolutely! QED
