    📚 If you enjoyed reading "I'm Glad My Mom Died", or are one of thousands of people on the waitlist for the book, here are some memoir recommendations you might also like to pass the time with! While these books vary in subject matter, they are all written by women who have been through tremendous hardship, escaped from it, and built the life they wanted, not a life bound by family or abusers. Part of why I am drawn to memoirs is because their stories make me feel like despite trauma and mental illness, I can make a better life for myself and end up okay too. I hope you will also feel the same way ❀

    I think the best memoir to read in relation to I'm Glad My Mom Died is What My Bones Know by Stephanie Foo. Highly recommend. Foo writes about her own healing as a journalist, researching and interviewing experts, interviewing the adults from her past who didn't intervene, and even including transcript excerpts from her own therapy sessions (audiobook has actual recordings). She also explores intergenerational trauma in immigrant communities and its relationship to child abuse. Incredible book.

    Jennette McCurdy's memoir is GREAT for first-time readers. I'm so glad you mentioned that. she basically writes the book as a series of vignettes so the "chapters" are quite short and her writing style is easy to digest while still making each vignette introspective and insightful. hope this is the first of many writing projects for her! I'd love to see a fiction novel from her too. also, KNOW MY NAME is seriously one of my all-time favourite books *ever*. Chanel Miller can WRITE write.

  • @frauleinfunf
    @frauleinfunf Pƙed rokem +1

    I loved this book but man, it was so hard to get through at times. I also found the scenes with her mom dying of cancer in the hospital to be sort of triggering since I recently went through that with my mom dying of lung fibrosis (although her mother's behavior was way more reminiscent of my grandmother, esp concerning stories my mom told me).
    As for memoir recs, two of my favorites are I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are by Rachel Bloom and Fun Home by Alison by Alison Bechdel. Bloom's memoir similarly deals with mental health issues, particularly OCD and shame spirals, and also made me feel seen as a former Weird Kid. Fun Home also deals with the subject trying to make sense of their fraught relationship with a parental figure after their death, and the musical adaptation is a gorgeous work of art.

(also was super happy that jennette and miranda have kept close and in good favor with each other. i don't think i could handle their friendship being all fake like other former castmates from childhood shows. knowing the cast of icarly thoroughly supports jennette makes me happy as well like when the reboot came out)
