My biggest complaint is that they never added quality of life updates that were requested right from the start. Sure, we did eventually get everything they planned for, but some areas of the game feel empty or unfinished. Very little villager dialogue, no bulk crafting, long loading/dialogue times at the airport, only 2 nook's cranny upgrades... These things were criticisms right from the start, and they had an opportunity to add/change them. They simply didn't : ( And those QOL features are major downsides to the game compared to previous entries.
Mini games was missing. I missed that since the day it came out. New Leaf had it and I still play New Leaf from time to time.
Very much agree. I never really cared about mini games. But there were so many QOL aspects of the game that needed polishing before they declared it done. Bulk crafting….dear God what I would have given. And more villager dialogue. ACNH had SO many villagers to choose from, which was great. But to have every personality type say the same things all the time diluted that sense of variety and got really tedious. Especially the normals, which were many of the cutest villagers in the game.

I think it feels like it was "ditched" because they weren't exactly clear (outside a few interview comments) on what to expect from the updates. If there was a road map that let us know aprox when updates would happen and maybe some things they planned to add, we would have been prepared the end. Instead it was just random videos being BTW update next week. Or even 2.0 releasing seemingly a bit early... but then I'm used to MMOs that have scheduled updates and patch notes ahead to hype up the changes, ACNH just felt so disorganised and uncommunicative. So I never felt like I could trust Nintendo that the end was actually the end.

yeah, one of the weaknesses of ACNH's update schedule is that it was the first game in its title to have this release scheme, so there was nothing to really reference when it came to what to expect -- especially since Nintendo isn't a super transparent company when it comes to that. it makes me think of the place Splatoon 3 is in right now. because Splatoon 1 and 2 both had release schedules where a lot of content was released post launch -- Splatoon 2 having one of the most egregious examples, where some returning main weapons were just straight up not added day zero -- although the schedule had changed somewhat, we had a vague expectation of what would come and when. but it's also a weakness. although having a roadmap sounds nice, it leaves a lot more chances for the community to overexcite themselves. any anticipation over a posible update in ACNH was tampered by the fact that we had *no remote confirmation at all* and basically no reason to expect it other than a gut feeling. but in Splatoon, we had the chance to make a lot of inferences based on past games, and despite only being pure speculation, they *feel* more real to us because there is reason to believe it -- it fits the schedule. thus we disappoint ourselves a lot harder when it doesn't happen.
It makes sense that they didn't update New Horizons forever, but the problem is it didn't feel like they were EVER updating it just adding in stuff that should have been there already. New Horizons shipped with a lot of missing features and content from New Leaf that were added after release, and at the end it was still missing stuff New Leaf had. Aside from farming we didn't really get that much that was actually new to the series in the post-launch updates. Plus they kept patching out fun bugs which sometimes meant the updates felt like they made the game worse. It was like an early access game, where the "updates" finally led up to the 1.0 version after two years with all the planned content finally included... and that's when they stopped working on new updates.
I think Nintendo really captured lightning in a bottle with New Horizons. I’m interested to see what they do for the next game! Hopefully it’ll come sorta soon with the switch 2. Do you all think they’ll be some sort of gimmick/theme to it?
the gimmick to new horizons shouldve been seamless sailing imo. could almost turn the game into an mmo where you can seamlessly travel to your friends island
We really need villagers with Personality! And bulk crafting!
Maybe it's just because I'm old and when I was a kid you'd buy a game and what was on the cart/disc was all the game you got, but I don't know how this mindset of "it needs to be updated forever or it's a dead and abandoned game" came from. I'd honestly much rather have all the content there on day 1 and not have to wait for things to be added over time. A surprise big update like New Leaf got is nice but not required for a game to be good. It should already be good and the update is just the cherry on the sundae.
In my experience as a gamer from many eras, I firmly believe it to be Minecraft that started this in earnest (though it certainly wasn't the first). Its base game was very substantial and the updates often felt like icing on the cake, but other games use this model as a "ship it now, finish it later" roadmap. This style of making games is fine, but it requires a lot of front loaded work to keep the fans from finishing everything, waiting for the next update, then finishing the new content too quickly. New Horizons fell into this death spiral extremely quickly. The unfortunate part is that it doesn't matter if the money was already made. That's sort of the point of the model in the first place
Not sure if Palia is exactly the best example lol, considering there’s probably only a small handful of developers left there.
It would've been really cool if more of the recipes were based off of how many times you did something. For example, if you pick 3 Purple Windflowers, then you think of the recipe for the Purple Windflower Crown. Just an example. But this would give a lot of incentive to come back and play everyday and make the DIY system more interesting.

I personally never considered the game "abandoned", Nintendo did give the couple of years of updates and rounded it off nicely with the large expansion as well. They more or less did add the things they hinted or implied they wanted to.
My main complaints mostly come from them ignoring a lot of QoL stuff people had been asking for since release (which we'll most likely never see now at this point) and a few missing things from New Leaf that could have been the cherry on top.
With that said though, I still adore New Horizons and have maintained an island since release. I can't wait to see where they take Animal Crossing next and what from ACNH may carry over.
It’s also interesting since the New Horizons dev team is the same as Splatoon’s and development was likely amid and sandwiched between Splatoon 2 content updates and Splatoon 3 development. That likely was a factor in the presumed brief window of New Horizons updates.
One thing i wish they did was expanding multiplayer like adding more things to do, i still play new leaf with my sister and it's really entertaining to do the tours on the island, in new horizons its just kind of bland
I just kinda wish um they would add more to the main game y'know? like, more than one shop upgrade? It isn't too hard to ask when every game prior had that, maybe not ACTUALLY ditched but it really feels like it should've gotten more.
Splatoon fans: it's so sad that content updates are ending. Nintendo surely can't stop now. We should get more.

Funny, it's the same dev team (EPD 5). They seem to have a habit of making games that "feel" unfinished, at least for their more recent games. Hopefully this trend doesn't continue into the next Nintendo generation.
@@ApapaneNui TBH I don't personally feel that Splatoon feels unfinished. I don't think it's perfect or anything but for me it's mostly just a bummer when content ends on a game you love.
@@Driftwood-ML I see what you mean. I suppose to me, I feel like there's a lot more that the devs could do with Splatoon 3 (3rd kits, more interesting map layouts, newer game modes, etc.). So I'm probably equating my own wishes for Splat3 to be bigger to it being "unfinished," and that's not the correct word for it.
So instead of saying the game is "unfinished," I should say it feels "unrealized." At least that's my personal take, and it's also my thoughts on Animal Crossing as well. These games are technically "finished," and I do love these games, but I see missed potential that kinda bums me out a little.

I'm speaking as a person who has never played an Animal Crossing game before this one.
At the end of the day, no I don't think they ditched New Horizons. However, to me it "feels" unfinished because I see areas of unrealized potential. An example is the promotional items that represent other Nintendo IPs. They have an entire section for this and all they have are Mario themed clothes and furniture. Could you imagine if they created new items and outfits for Zelda, Splatoon, Kirby and more? And this is only one example. What about the mysterious upstairs in Nook's Cranny that we can't enter?
All this on top of the QoL updates the game still needs (bulk crafting and buying, being able to instantly hop between Nook Miles Islands, etc) adds up to a game that _feels_ unfinished. But with all that said, I still love this game. This was a lovely introduction to Animal Crossing for me. I hope the next game takes the best parts of this game, improves on the shortcomings, and brings back the best of the previous games I never got to play.
That's what confuses me so much. The previous entry, New Leaf had a lot of different Nintendo IP's represented as furniture, clothes etc yet got reduced and largely ignored. Here's hoping the next entry brings it back if not expands

I dont really mind the Update phylosophy at all, what bothers me is the lack of content and how the game was designes overall. We are still missing much furniture series, minigames, all nintendo items, the villagers are all totally flat and boring, we are missing many many special NPCs and facilitys. This game is more like happy home designer 2 with some mainline games gameplayelements.
Also all the QoL features are nice and all, but on the other sode AC lost much of its soul for that. Like you can change your appereance in the mirror now and dont need to visit harriet anymore. Thats convient, but its not fun anymore. And im missing that. Also to be able to get any villager with amiibocards is minda lame. Villagers ask for your permission to move out, but they dont if you say no...
I dont like that. NH feels like clunky map editor, but not as an animal crossing game.

I feel like this game could have had endless possibilities to delight us, interest us and yes, get money from us. I wish they had continued to add to it. I would have happily paid for DLCs until the next game came out, but that's just me. 🤷♀ I wish I had taken it much slower, however. I loved it so much that I played it to beat it, instead of enjoy it. My museum has been done for almost a year now, I got all the flowers and now I'm just doing dailies and trying to get all the photos. It keeps me entertained though and still brings me a little joy every night which is enough imo. Did they ditch it? Probably, but I still enjoy the videos of the people I follow that still play, like you, so....thanks☺
My current request/idea. Make it a little more city/world-based, and Your friends list becomes an attachment via a gate/bridge (fish-able river crossing maybe?) and you can visit friend’s city/world via internet at any time, even offline. Create cool ways to interact and build with friends on a larger scale?
I got pretty much everything I wanted from animal crossing. My biggest complaints though is I would have liked gates for my fences, outdoor rugs, let us decline duplicate DIYS/Cooking recipes and I hate accidently kicking up custom pathing. That's probably my largest gripe though. There's many other things I could complain about but they're more minute in comparison. I just feel it was ditched because of it feeling like the 2.0 update shouldn't have been the last major update. Even to this day the game feels unfinished.
This game's full potential was indeed held back. Idk why but I feel like New Horizons wasn't put in the same amount of passion and care as NL had. Maybe this is just me as a newbie only gotten into animal crossing in 2019. Though, you can kind of see it in the way the models look in NH. To me they look the same as they had before (of course more HD), but they could have put much more detail on them etc. They look kind of stale imo. Not fully complete and kinda basic. Maybe this was intentional meant to represent a small steppingstone for future AC game. I also agree that they missed the big opportunity to make the game much more, but hey this was all going on in the pandemic. Though. I distinctly remember the game not having that wow factor when I first booted up the game 4 years ago. Maybe now they realize the potential this franchise has and go all out in the next iteration etc., or maybe they'll remaster it or something on the switch 2 😋. Thorugh and through I have fallen in love with this series ( as many other nintendo franchises) Nonetheless.

I agree it's finished. But, I don't get why they can't just add new items and seasonal things to the game. It's the perfect type of game for that. Also, they could have at least did some QOL updates.
They should release island and player name change to squeeze some funds out of it. But who knows why they dont want to??
Nintendo didn't abandon New Horizons, they just went out for cigarettes a few years ago
Looking at the fact with all fish in the game and conversations with other residents, I think Nintendo had plans for another update, especially adding recipes to cook.
However, back in March of 2020 is when the game released and thats when things went off the rails. Nintendo probably had plans for another update, but given the general situation at that time, Nintendo probably decided to do the safest thing, and cancel updates until the situation got better.
I don't consider it ditched, I think they just had their internal schedule, they had 2 years to add their planned content and then dev time needed to switch to Splatoon 3, they had no way of knowing a pandemic would make this the 2nd best selling switch game.
If we want to talk about ditching a game, Mario Party Superstars is it, why no dlc boards Nintendo, it is the best Mario Party in years, give us more! Lol

Nowadays people have the tendency of finding one thing they like then start seeing everything that isn't exactly like it as a flaw with complete disregard for the individual circumstances and design philosophies behind each game
I hope they are making the next animal crossing game. Especially if they make the villagers have more of a personality. Ideally, back to the forest. If terraforming returns, make it easier. ive had no many quit moments thanks to the time and teidiusness relating to terraforming my island.

I do feel Ike they abandoned it but perhaps NH was more of a test game for them than a true game, similar to Pokémon Legends: Arceus. The reason why I feel this way is because the we are missing so much from previous games and I’m not referring to mini games, additional fruits, or gems. The amount of furniture series absent is pretty outstanding, not to mention we were only able to upgrade the shop ONCE. I hope the next game is more well rounded.
The switch has been out for about 6 years now, I’m pretty sure they’re being refocused to pay attention to its successor

I wouldn't say New Horizons has been ditched, but finished. As unfortunate as it is, all games have to stop being updated at some point. They have to be let go of eventually.

I basically agree with you. While New Horizons does feel incomplete to me, precisely because of features we had in earlier games that didn't come back, and I'd have liked to see a few more updates for it than we got, I think we've had it long enough now that I'm looking forward to the next installment rather than still wishing for new updates for this one. As a Europa Universalis IV player, I breathed a huge sigh of relief when they finally announced that EU5 is coming after *ten years* of EU4 updates. It's time for a new one. Eventually games just need to be finished, and New Horizons is finished. Bring on New Space!
Bound to have happened. Why can't my life be... I should not say anything I'll regret, after all, my life is great, why should I complain? I would never want to give it up, but the things I want from it seem impossible to ask.
It is still the best cozy game available, but it could have been even better. I try other games and keep coming back to this one. There should be more shops, and more stock, because with the 2.0 update, there's no chance of collecting every piece of furniture. Treasure islands have become a necessity.
I don't find it cozy personally, to me the best cozy game as of now is new leaf. The terraforming and expansive outdoor decorating overwhelm me
@@AS-cs9gi But you don't have to do all that, if you don't want to. Without it, there's a simple game with the aim of getting to 3 stars and then 5. You can just throw stuff down and do what Isabelle tells you to get that far. I got carried away with all the designing, and I was overwhelmed, too. But now, I'm taking my time, doing what I want and it's much more enjoyable.
@LynneConnolly Well yeah I don't have to feel like I need to terraform and decorate and all that. But the thing is, new leaf had much more to do besides that while new horizons heavily lacks other activities. In New leaf you could play minigames on tortimer island, work at brewster Cafe, the dialogue isn't as boring or repetitive, there's Reese and cyrus shop, villagers could follow you around and they don't just stick around the town hall, more holidays and event activities... I never get bored, meanwhile I immediately wanna get off acnh cause there's nothing much fun to do or look forward to
@@AS-cs9gi I've only ever played New horizons. But even then, there are obvious gaps. You can't get all the items you want, for instance, especially after the 2.0 update. And while the decorating keeps me happy, I'd love some new minigames, like the May Day one. They did add a lot of dialogue after the update, but the villagers still have their "base" dialogue. But I've not found anything to replace it, even though I've tried a few others. I don't like the animation in Stardew, which is probably the nearest.
What you didn’t account for is that AC and splatoon have the same dev team and they take turns
AC was done and they moved onto splatoon now the next AC game is being worked on

My boyfriend was just saying that he really hopes that a new animal crossing game comes out because he lost all hope for an update on new horizons and honestly I’d want another update but a new game would be cool too. I feel like they kinda did ditch it because they said they’d give a lot of updates and we didn’t really get much aside from 2.0 and that’s it :/
They delivered everything they promised for the game then moved on to the next project
If you want continuous support for any game then you better be ready to start seeing microtransactions

My thoughts in one, New Horizons is a great, feature complete game and is done. Animal Crossing games have always chopped and changed, added and took away. Its the same with Minecraft, the updates are small cos the game is done lol.

I resent that dig at the wii u. It is not a terrible console. It's just not that great, but It had terrible marketing. Also, splatoon 3 players had to wait aaaages because of covid NH focus, to get a 3/4 bakes game that is ok in most respects but splatoon 2 was soooo much better in most others.
I agree, they completed the game they intended. It would be nice to get a release that included the Happy Home Paradise stuff the New Leaf mini games but yeah, I think they finished it.

I always move on from this game & play a different game because animal crossing community is very toxic on twitter a lot now & I few of my friends blocked me on Twitter for no reason & so i stopped playing animal crossing new horizon completely & move on to a different game & Nintendo are working on a different game so they ditched that game completely & not coming back to it every again

Hi Kora!!! I love the addition of facecam to your videos. As a brand new AC player I enjoyed the drip updates and I definitely agree that COVID threw w wrench in the games lifecycle.
are there things that Nintendo could've updated ACNH? sure. but then where would they go for the next game? some games have to have a completed point to make the next one just as fun and then some.
They butchered and ruined the items. Thousand+ butchered from new leaf that they were too lazy to put in. But oh no…40 variations on each same chair and backpack as “different items” in the 2.0 update.
First timer here, just discovered your videos a couple nights ago. I feel pretty bitter towards New Horizons. I was never much of a time traveler, so losing that didn’t bother me, but most of the updates were drip feeding old content that used to be standard. In my opinion, the updates turned an incomplete game into would what I would’ve liked the game to be at the start. I understand that they can’t keep it alive forever, but I wish the updates would have gone further beyond compensating for a half-baked release.

I truly hope that they put the talented people that helped make this game great on something new with at least as much imagination and potential
This is the Reason New Horizons isn't that enjoyable in my opinion, and feels like an unfinished game.

As in…they were lazy and just slow-rolled stuff they probably had before launch just to sit on their butts.
I think Nintendo did what they could for us in a world of uncertainty. Maybe they were unpredictable in a complicated way but they were probably overwhelmed with the effects of Covid just as much as we all were. I’m excited for the next game and I hope they make New Space :)
The point is, overall, each animal crossing has been an improvement on the last.
NH was a step back.
1. Crafting suddenly becoming a feature.
2. GOLDEN tools breaking and losing all importance.
3. Thousand+ items cut. Dozens of series, themes, items.
4. No minigames. Ever.
5. All of the “updates” from year one were things New leaf and all other games had AT LAUNCH.
6. Even MORE generic villagers than ever before
7. Multiple NPC’s cut from any meaningful role.
It was lazy. Bottom of the barrel, pathetic development. I’ve never been more disappointed in a game.
The ONLY improvement was
1. Being able to build outside
2. Terraforming
I’ve built 4 full houses in NL, had planned for 8 in NH. When I realized how much they BUTCHERED the game I stopped playing.
What’s the point if only 1% of the old furniture is there.

When are you going to whining about this? I can't watch even 5 minutes of your channel without you crying about a 60 dollar game you've gotten hundreds, maybe even thousands, of hours out of not feeding you content forever. Sure, I'm disappointed too but you have to understand that they gave us exactly what they promised, not some grand fantasy you decided was reality the second they handed out their roadmap.

"Nintendo ditched NH" when Nintendo publicly stated they'd continue supporting it for 2 years after release and they kept their word 100%. Quite the stretch for content there....

?? the game came out 2020 and ended support in 2021 that's just straight up not two years also most of the updates were just adding things that were already in previous games. Kora also talks about how these updates were physically time gated as in you literally could not time travel to those dates and play early even if the update released before the actual holiday. my theory was that they planned to have it that way for it's entire lifespan and that it would've been much longer. but due to covid during it's development they just got tired of working on it (understandable tbh) and decided to drop the restrictions and just finish up a big update and call it a day.
