My tip is to save the init patch to favorites if you plan on making multiple patches so it’s super easy to pull up

A patch to make Troutman proud thank you so much for this, I got a DX100 as my first synth specifically because i wanted to talkbox but i noticed (especially as a budding synthesist) that the old FM synths are kinda awkward to work around sometimes.
I own a Mini-Nova specifically for its vocoding capabilities but to know i can use it for talkbox with all the ability to tweak as i see fit make me wanna use this more than the DX honestly

Thanks!! This MiniNova was actually a backup beater for testing from the TalkStar factory. My good one was out on loan at the time. We got it this way basically for a small trade so I have no funny story for ya!! Still sounds great tho 🤩

Hi! Great video! I'm thinking of diving into the talk box world.I'm a keyboard player and have a nova. I'm confused if a mic is needed. Can I go direct out into a mixer/Pa or direct out into my daw. interface? Is a mic required? Because the sound out of the tube needs to be micd at your mouth right? The great Talk Star 'The Test" vid of Mr. Talkbox looks like he's going direct? He's not using a mic. Any

Hey Ron - Think of talkbox as you would a singer / natural human voice. The tube from the TalkStar sends the synth signal into your mouth which is then modulated by your mouth and returned back out as speech / singing whatever is played on the keyboard - so YES you need a microphone just like a singer, when you need to be amplified on stage OR to record the performance into your DAW. There is no such thing as going direct with talkbox - In our "Test" video with Mr. Talkbox - it was only being picked up by the camera because the TalkStar is so loud that you really do not need a mic to play / practice. you mention in the vid that the talkbox distorts if you play chords.. I'm hovering over the buy button, but id like to know if it could work almost like a sonovox, can i play, chords, music or sound fx through the talkstar to get the same effect rather than just using a keyboard output. ? or will it crunch & distort as it does in this vid ? thanx for your time :)
It is not ideal to play more than one note from a synthesizer (or guitar) through a talkbox, BUT it can be done without too much distortion. It would need to be a light almost string-like tone at lower volume. Talkboxers typically layer harmonies in their DAW one at a time - like a real vocalist would. Hope this clears that up!!
Yeah it distorts when more than a single note is playing,but... if you have a compressor u can almost get around this issue. First plug in the synth into a decent compressor with less. Now hit a single note and look at the level of sound reduction by the leds. Now play a chord. You want a high level of compressing to happen when you play a chord compared to just single notes. If you set the threshold and attack setting correctly you can achieve a miracle of sorts.

Thanks Toby. The internal mic on the MiniNova is for the built in vocoder, which is very different than a talkbox. This patch was made using the TalkStar self-powered talkbox, which was specifically designed for use with a synthesizer (not guitar like ALL other talkboxes on the market). Sorry, we don't have one of those in house. However if you follow the basics of making this patch for the MiniNova you could apply it to the Deep Mind. Any simple monophonic sawtooth wave patch will sound pretty good for talkbox, especially with the TalkStar!! Also - make sure ALL effects are off (reverb, delay, chorus etc)
Are you able to use the microphone that comes with the mininova to get this patch working?
The mic for vocoding but talkbox works the exact opposite of vocoding. Talkbox has you shaping the sound from the sybth where vocoding has the synth shaping your voice.
I am curious if using this patch with a vocoder is possible and if your voice would sound like the talkbox or if it would just sound bad
The short answer to your question is “no’” ..two different things. He is using a talkbox ... he actually has a plastic tube inside of his mouth where the sound from the mini nova is coming out from. Then with his mouth he is shaping the sound wave (nothing coming out of his throat. Meaning he is not singing) just shaping the sound into a microphone ...(not the mini nova one ) Vocoding and Talkboxing are two different things and utilize different methods. The Mininova is an out of the box Vocoder with its own dedicated mic (for vocoding) , you would need to purchase a Talkbox and connect it to the mininova’s output , create a patch that is suitable for it and a microphone to talkbox into. I for one am all about talkboxing vocoding is not really my thing ...I guess my name says it all ....krimson funk. ;)

Talkbox definitely allows for much more articulation and feeling, but vocoder has it's place for the right types of music. I use both - depending on what the record calls for. Unfortunately I do not use the MiniNova vocoder tho, I tend to add it to a vocal in the DAW and my go to is the WAVES Morphoder VST.

So do you need that plastic tube to make that cool zap sound?..or can you just use the vocoder mic..
The tube is what brings the synth tone to your mouth where you shape the words, so yes you need it to make that Zapp sound. Vocoder is a very different thing, and the MicroKorg has a built in vocoder with a mic - this video is about making a patch to use with a talkbox.

You don't need to worry about that at all. No royalty will ever be - or could never be collected for using a synth patch.

Do you prefer the MiniNova over the Microkorg? Could you use oscillator 2 as a sub oscillator to add a bit of a growl on the lower end?
Yes, but both sound great for talkbox. I almost added that exact part in the video, but wanted to keep it simple. You can also have one of the tweak knobs mix in the sub oct from oscillator 2 for perfect blend. It’s a dope sound!!

@@mitchelbenjaminsr1587 I actually went with the MiniNova because of this video. I liked that it has the performance knobs and the way Fingazz set them up is perfect. I added a 5th knob using the selector switch as the Sub Oscillator and got exactly what I was after. I think the MiniNova was about $80 cheaper as well.

not sure why, but I followed all the steps and it isn't rersponding to my voice through plugged in mic... is there a step you have to take to "enable" mic control?
You may be confusing "vocoder" and "talkbox" - NOT the same thing. The MiniNova does have a vocoder in it, but this video was for making a patch in the MN to then use THRU a talkbox like ours, called the TalkStar.

Can you do the SAME thing on an UltraNova? If so.... Would you be able to use all 8 knobs that is on the Ultranova to assign the (tweek knobs) ? I prefer the full size key's oppose to the mini keys on the mininova. Fortunately.... I own BOTH.
As far as I know, the UltraNova can load the same patches as MiniNova (got that straight from my Novation guy) BUT I haven't had my hands on an UltraNova so not sure about it's tweak knobs or how it's programmed. I assume you can follow along with this video and make it in UN fairly easily. Cheers!!

No. The MiniNova does not need to be connected to a computer to save patch, just save internally. You can however connect with usb and use the Novation editor/librarian to edit and save patches.

Hey Truman, this patch does not apply to the MiniNova built-in vocoder. It is for use with an external talkbox, preferably a TalkStar!! The MiniNova has some decent vocoder patches already in the presets, but talkbox is a very different operation than vocoder.

@@Mohkaa It's probably too late but go to global -> Memory -> Switch on to off. It's supposed to stop new users from messing up their patches when they first buy it.

Yes, it's for an outboard talkbox. The MiniNova has a vocoder built in, a very different thing.

I didnt know a talkbox would work on mininova is it a midi talk box tube?
Talkbox doesn't work "on" a synth with midi. A synth audio output is sent "to" the talkbox - and the talkbox amplifies the signal, sending through the tube into your mouth, where you shape the words and pick up the modulated sound - then you can record that performance with a microphone, just like a singer BUT now you're singing with a synth voice!!! @@Mohkaa it was the MiniNova manual online - it says just go to GLOBAL menu, the second option is MEMORY PROTECTION, then switch from ON to OFF - now you can save new patches.
