  • I can’t thank enough ‪@WinspaceBikes‬ to have sent me this set of Lún HYPER 23 SE R45 wheels. These were my upgrade choice moving from my Prime RR-50 V3 to further reduce the weight of my Canyon Ultimate.
    Check out the excellent videos from ‪@PeakTorque‬ and ‪@Hambini‬ to have a comprehensive review of the technical aspects. I will try to contribute with my own experience and perspective on these wheels.
    In the cycling clips I’m wearing kit courtesy of Siroko Cycling. If you wish to shop for Siroko kit you can use my link to get an extra 10% discount automatically added to the existing discounts. No need to enter other codes, following the link the prices shown will be reduced. Thank you!

    Bravo 👏 Fede !!!! Nice to see the canyon coming along great weight btw . I had a go on a friends bike with carbon spokes !!! My word the wheels are as stiff as hell but it really gives the feeling that you’re on rails when cornering. 28 c is the way to go I think Fede the holy trinity speed, comfort & grip . Looking forward to your appraisal after after a few miles . Keep the good work and get the silver Velobuild up

    I just got these exact wheels. I mounted 25mm Contis and after one ride I ordered 28s. Carbon spokes are a lot harsher than I expected. I'm looking forward to the weather improving enough to try out the 28s. The wheels are crazy-stiff and fast on accelerations and hill climbing. Better in that regard than I expected. Can't wait to get out on them some more!

    • @fede1275
      @fede1275  Před 7 měsíci

      I have done only one 60Km ride and so far I did not find them very harsh. Definitely can feel the acceleration and speed. Maybe next weekend I can try them on a longer ride.

    • @87togabito
      @87togabito Před 7 měsíci

      Are carbon spokes really harsher?
      I come from a mtb background where I ride full suss 2.5 tyres.
      My road bike is on carbon hoops and spokes, but I’ve never associated the word “harsh” with it. Or rather, is a level of discomfort that is par for the course for a road bike, since it doesn’t have suspension and fat 2.5 tyres on 25 psi

    • @CrabgrassFarmer
      @CrabgrassFarmer Před 7 měsíci

      Yes they are harsher. But they are also like other road bike wheels, if you go back to 21mm tires and 120 PSI! When I first took the hypers on a first spin around the neighborhood I didn't notice. But that's because my neighborhood is all freshly re-paved and completely smooth. As soon as I got them on normal (but not bad) roads, the difference was very noticeable. I'm hoping the 28mm Contis bring the ride back a little closer to what I had on 25mm Contis that needed 93 psi because my old carbon wheels only had 17mm internals.

    Fed, Happy New Year and thank you for all your efforts. Nice review. Do you know of any similar carbon rim brake wheels with a shallower dish, that you would recommend?
    I’m in Sydney and we regularly get >20kn summer breezes which make my Roval 50s hairy to ride on broken and potholed main roads that make UK B roads feel like air cushions. I’m looking for something not as wind affected but sturdy. My DTSwiss steels rims on my old 2014 TCR were old school and no problem with 23kn cross wind so looking for the same assurance.
    BTW I changed from very expensive, fragile but superb 26 Turbo Cottons to slower but tougher GP5000 28s. The ride is harder but faster than GP4000 II 25s but the 28 for Sydney roads is a must. Tubes but still lower pressure to absorb the ruts.

    • @fede1275
      @fede1275  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Not sure, as I really like the speed of deep section wheels. At 87Kg I'm not that disturbed by crosswinds. Maybe if I were you I would go 40mm maybe.

  • @Stealthgate007

    Hi Fed. It took me a moment to go from my 25mm Pirelli to 28mm GP 5000. Because tires are not cheap, see if someone will let you test ride a bike similar to yours with 28s. In my experience, they are just as fast, but way more comfortable and smoother. It's one of the better changes I've made, and I'm a little stubborn 🤣

    Great video - as always! :) How do they compare to the Visions so far (Ride feeling / quality? Any noticeable difference? Is one faster than the other? More sensitive to winds)?
    I am thinking (or rather dreaming) about a slightly deeper section wheel set for my Aeroad. Currently running some cheaper alu Visions (Team 30), that are working tubeless brilliantly too. I quite like the comfort (even managed to fit 28mm tires on them) and they seem to be just perfect during these "beautiful" winter days. However when the roads dry up and the storms are gone, I am very curious to see something deeper than my current 38mm (Cuore) carbon rims. The Visions and Luns you have are on the top of my list.

    • @fede1275
      @fede1275  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thank you! I haven't done enough Kms for a proper comparison between them, but initial feedback from the Hypers is really good. The Visions SC55 have a narrower channel and they have a perfect transition with 23c tyres. 25 should be okay, but 28 would sit too wide in my opinion. The Hypers have a 21mm channel and they already stretch the 25c. If you like 28c then it would be a better fit with the Hypers. But for overall speed on the straight the narrower the better imo.

    Hi, did you have any clearance issues between the rim brake caliper and the wide wheels? Did 28mm tyres have enough clearance on the frame? My bikes both use Ultegra brakes but the manufacturer claim (bike) is max 25mm tyres, what did the 25mm tyre blow up to when mounted on a 21mm internal rim?

    • @fede1275
      @fede1275  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I haven't measured up the 25c tyres on these 21mm wide wheels, but the clearance is great and aero transition between the wheel and the tyre is excellent. Canyon mentioned 25c max for this rim brakes Ultimate, I believe some have fitted 28c tyres, but I am not going to try them as I prefer how 25c fir these rims.

      Also I just watched your other video where you talked about them on a ride, and you mentioned you're running them at 90/95psi.This seems a little high to me, even for someone of your build. On a 21c rim the effective tire volume will be higher, so even with the same 25mm tire you'll want to drop the pressure from what you were running with a narrower rim. i.e. a 25mm tire at 95psi on a 21c rim will feel firmer than the same 25mm tire at the same 95psi but on a 17c rim. I've ordered new wheels for my Canyon which has rim brakes but I've read so many horror stories about lack of braking in wet on carbon rims I went for aluminium again. If you only ride in dry conditions then carbon is fine but in UK not a hope. OK can keep two sets one summer one winter but extra cost, hassle etc so for average rider not worth it. I'll be keen to see a wet ride if you go out when raining. I'll also say that freehub sounding awful! However, that is personal choice as I like freehub to be quiet.

    • @fede1275
      @fede1275  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Definitely braking in wet with carbon wheels is not good. I haven't tried the Hyper with the textured surface yet though. As I commute all year round I have dedicated a bike to the wet rides with aluminium wheels. If I go out on a long ride with the one with carbon wheels I try to avoid wet days as it would not be enjoyable anyway. When I got caught in a downpour I had to apply the brakes in short bursts to dissipate the initial layer of water and then you get a better grip. Slightly toe in pads also help. Problem is once you get used to the deep section wheels' speed it's difficult to go back to standard aluminium ones.
