  • Past and present DARPA program managers and a DARPA-funded researcher describe the agency’s historical and current role in advancing new technologies for affordable manufacturing in the defense sector. Among these contributions are early advances in additive techniques (a.k.a., 3-D printing), affordable missile production, and pioneering processes to ensure confidence in new manufacturing techniques, such as composite bonding. Current DARPA programs perpetuate the long-term goal of leveraging data and information technologies so they can become ever-more helpful to human designers as they strive to invent the new materials that become the flesh of ever-more capable technologies.

    When we focus on the objectives that we want and not on the means that we can use, the idea of resorting to technological means is just one among several options.
    And it's not even the best of options. And why? Because it requires different materials, construction, parts, assembly, complicated connections, etc...
    Now, the more complex the weapon, the more likely something goes wrong. And the effectiveness is also doubtful.
    Let's compare, for example, with another type of weapon (it doesn't matter if it's already operational or not) foreseen by quantum theories:
    - Operated by thought (in fact the process is more complicated);
    - Using as a means of action, the same used by the quantum entanglement verified between sub-atomic particles;
    - Action on the target: modification of the probabilities of one or more events (ability to, for example, destroy a nuclear power plant or a missile, as well as trajectory deviation; climate modification, etc,...).
    - Efficiency: ~100%
