I just love how so many people, who never heard of this song or the Yakuza franchise before the meme, have unknowingly clicked on this video and discovered the best version by accident, as it features the best singer in the franchise (Shun Akiyama). FYI, folks: the version that became famous is the one that was sung by Kazuma Kiryu (one of the main characters of the Yakuza games). This version features Shun Akiyama, another main character who gets introduced in Yakuza 4. Akiyama is the guy at 03:07, while Kiryu is the guy you've probably already seen (white/grey suit).
Oh, and you might wonder why such a song is in a video game about Yakuza. Well, those games have Karaoke mini-games, which have many gems like this song (and there are plenty of other mini-games too...). Also, those games aren't only "serious" crime dramas. Oh boy, if only you people knew. Yakuza games are literal troll/shitpost games that dial up the comedy REALLY fast when outside the main story. They make you cry rivers or almost choke from laughter. Such is the duality of the Yakuza games.

I'm SO GLAD Akiyama and Saejima got more karaoke in Yakuza 5. Akiyama's voice is BEAUTIFUL.
Kiryu's version is fine, but a bit deceptive in that the way he sings it comes off as charming. Meanwhile, Akiyama's starts off smooth but he delivers the pain of the lyrics with every time he goes through the chorus. That expression is what officially changed my feelings about this song. I thought it was goofy (mostly thanks to the games), but after reading these lyrics and hearing his delivery, I feel sad about it now.

How on earth is Kiryu's version any charming? It's painful. But, the thing is, Kiryu's version sounds like he's in pain all the time, but Akiyama made it sound happy and sad alternatingly, it's more acute, if that's the right word for it. Kiryu's version sounds like a dragging pain, in which suits the song very well. Both are great ways of presenting the song tbh, but who am I to speak? I don't know shit about singing, but hey that's what the 2 singers made me think of the song.
Kiryu's version does not sound charming at all. It's just straight melancholy the whole way through.

Akiyama has the voice that sounds like he could be a singer for one of those hostess bars in the 40s. I get some Frank Sinatra vibes in his voice. He has a beautiful voice and it helps that his voice actor is a fluent English speaker

It doesn't matter which version is better because at the end of the day, the song is beautifully sang by both singers/VA and it suits both versions really well. You also can't argue the instrumental is too beautiful to ignore. I love both versions of the song myself.

I prefer Kiryu's melody in some of the words, like how he says "na no ni" differently, but Akiyama's voice is better. Kiryu's also has the lower pitch, which is also an interesting take on the song (though I know they did it because he couldn't hit the highest notes).
The piano in baka mitai is also just great in general it really helps bring the sad mod

Shun Akiyama's version is more modern like he's actually on stage performing on a show that is a singing competition like he was singing it if it was his last.
Akiyama's voice is WOW o_O The way he's sung this really reminds me of how he is when it comes to love. He's smooth but a bit fragile. He falls *deep* and gets hurt just as deeply. And you can see it not in the lyrics but in his voice. Yamadera's amazing.
I remember faintly hearing this when I was making breakfast. I left the waffle in the toaster, unattended to answer the call of duty. When I returned my kitchen was smoky and the epicenter was the toaster. I rushed to save my waffle but I was too late. My breakfast was now an unrecognizable black lump. I collapsed to the floor in agony as my waffle crackled and tried to comfort it to the tune of this song.

Kiryu's version is more mellow and peaceful, going off of audio alone it's the version that sounds like he's keeping to himself while people are sleeping in the next room, or that he has issues with himself & his friends forced him to do karaoke (something he wouldn't do on his own), he doesn't want to hear himself but can take solice in knowing the crowd wants an encore once he makes it through
Akiyama's is sheer passion with a brazen confidence, the version to just let it out, it matters not who hears him, let them listen, he knows what he's doing and takes charge with it, he knows he can stun the crowd by tapping into his soul and he does just that
Tbh I like this version because the key the song is in not only hammers in that 80/90s nostalgia, but it sounds more lighter and almost heartwarming. Yeah they’re the same song but different keys, but that’s makes a big difference in the tone of a song
