Cerys Matthews was drawn to the United States because of her love of its music: country, rhythm and blues, and gospel. Here she visits the sites that forged Nashville's legendary reputation as the home of country music. And just few hours down the road, in Memphis, the birthplace of rock'n'roll, she visits the former home of Stax Records, now a music school

Nashville and Memphis are like nite and day. Went to both last year, love the food and history of Memphis. Give me Memphis. And that's from a 71 year old white dude from California

Love these southern travel videos but why do they have to be so short?

I live in Nashville but I'm from Memphis. Hope to go home to Memphis very soon. You said Memphis had a swagger. I call it a soul. Nashville is little more than a marketing exercise directed at simplistic people who are just intent on perpetuating music that appeals to white folks looking backward. Memphis, on the other hand, loves diversity and the wonderful music that comes from diversity. Spend more time in Memphis next time. You'll have a much more rewarding visit!

Nice idea for a program, but then bogged down to dreary modern boring twaddle - 'country music' & 'Soul', robotic plod-alongs for 20th century peddlers to batter us with.
Is great to really to get down to the roots of music entwining - listen to West African traditional music, listen to 17 & 18th century English Welsh Scots and Irish music (they're all different, you know), and marvel how they mixed together. That ugly history has obscured how they mixed together, but mix they definitely did. There are (only) a couple of albums of African-American traditional music recorded ages ago, that is NOT blues - and they speak volumes. Even the banjo itself is an African instrument.
