That whole hog guy... Everybody loving his food, working like crazy and serving the food with a proud smile, and stil looking a bit insecure when the reporter takes hit first bite. "is he gonna like my food?"... Thats humility right there:)
YES!
And his smile reflects that
no wonder usa have most cancer deads
@watergod 83 LUL kek just the truth ...!!
@watergod 83 than research what made cancer....stupid nobi u can even heal cancer with healthy food without chemo who makes u even faster die ....
That was the realest shit ever when the whole hog guy was talking about why he keeps that style. He'd rather not cook BBQ at all if he's not doing it in the method traditional to his family and home town. Living in the deep South myself, the stubbornness of people on other issues can be frustrating, but when it's applied to something like this: a craft honoring history and tradition, it can be so beautiful.
When it comes to food, sticking to tradition is usually a good idea.
My in laws are from there, every 4th of July, we get 2 pounds of chopped and pulled pork
Well said!
@@ww45818 bet y’all look forward to that!
@@hunterpursell1693 💯💯💯
I'm just astonished how incredibly honest everyone here seems to be. The whole hog guy, Helen. Everyone.
And the guys that didn't want to talk to the brit haha
The people in the "flyover states" as the arrogant coastal elites in the US like to call them are some of the most honest, but at the same time nicest people you will ever meet.
That’s Tennessee baby it’s where I’m at and I’d never wanna leave most of the people are the sweetest people you’d ever meet
I don't know why but the dude @8:34 gives me the chills. He is like "say one bad thing about the food and you will find yourself on my smoker".
I could listen to that guy sing Amazing Grace forever. Just like butter.
The 2nd and 3rd ones are so damn humble, showing that real southern hospitality. Always nice to see people like that.
O N L Y T E N I S E E
Wow that gentleman has got an amazing voice. Him singing and his wife Helen cooking and serving BBQ is a great combination. This couple work so hard, long hours everyday, hard work makes the team work.
I watched this video almost every day for 6 months when I had Leukemia and was in the hospital 2 years ago. This video is really good and made me want to go to the US just to eat alot of BBQ.
Hope you doing well mate 🙏🏼
Come down and I’ll share a rack of ribs with ya ole boy!
When life gives you bone cancer, you make legendary barbecue.
That's some true wisdom here .. !!
ador757 wetkhvx😒😉😳❤️😍😄😗🙏🙁😏
Claver😅😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
True
Go vegan guys avoid the cancer.
Helen and her husband are the type of people I would love to meet... they are so genuinely nice friendly and passionate I hope they have nothing but good fortune in life She is adorable :D
I love people who are absurdly passionate about their work. Those people are the most important.
Tom is an amazing host. He seems very genuine in all of his interactions, which shines through in the unscripted conversations. The bbq looks divine.
That intro is on point
+Michael Mistretta You couldn't be more Right.

No it’s not it’s false Tn has the worse barbecue in the world it is not barbecue simple because you put dry rub on it and smoke it barbecue has barbecue sauce not. Fucking dry rub that disgusting
@@marmadoowhereareyou8838 false
@@marmadoowhereareyou8838 Literally one of the worst comments I've ever read. Are you actually that stupid? You do understand regional preference, right? Chances are any bbq you make is straight up awful.
This video brought tears to my eyes. I'm serious. So much work, so much love. Everything so simple. That Zack dude and Helen... just awesome. That's why I want to do a roadtrip around US.
I am from Tennessee and I love all the people he meets. The second man is a true native Tennesseean and all the barbecue that he serves is lust like what you can find in Nashville and west. It is really cool.
I’m from the UK and that accent from the south is jus beautiful. It’s like a rhyme every time. Wonderful. These great people take their food seriously. Can’t wait to try it.
The more I see about America's food culture, the more I want to travel there and do something like a road trip around the country!
Bring some kevlar and youl be just fine
Dude you cannot go wrong if you just stick to BBQ on a road trip. One problem one year will not be enough time to hit all the great BBQ places in the U S of A.
Matsumoto CHA if you like alcohol, you should go visit Kentucky’s bourbon trail. It’ll change your life
We are* and that is not true, USA si in the top 20 maybe but not 2nd and it aint anythinng to brag about and u r stupid
Yeah, it's too bad that it's very expensive to travel to the US. I live in the UK and it's at least £3,000 for a week or two, nevermind actually travelling the country.
You can see that zack from scott parkers is truly passionate about his bbq.I admire him for not only being passionate but for keeping tradition alive
The King of kings
7:39 The happiness one experiences when someone from the south asks this question is out of this world.
17:30 that's how a restaurant is supposed to run. "How's your boss?" -"I love him" that was sincere. Well fucking done, Munchies. This is how people need to view the service industry. It's not all greed and angry chefs.
The south has really changed
I like the owner he kinda remind me of my grandpa
They barely count as employees and employer. They've known each other most of their lives. They've known each other and been friends who see each other eight hours a day, six days a week, since before most people reading this were born.
As someone with the majority of my family being from Lexington, TN, and knowing the good and bad sides of the "small town culture" in places like that, I would've never expected to see them get a spotlight on Munchies. Awesome episode, and pretty nostalgic for me personally.
as an indian living in texas i can say i feel more homely in the south than in the north like new york or chicago, something indians and southerners share is strong family values and heritage.. i live in texas by the way....
America.....this is what I love about you ....
And this is what I miss so much since I have left your great country, I miss the people your fighting spirit and your awesome food.
Cheers from france👍
Come back friend :)
I love GA too! -Terry from Tennessee :)
I was at a Tennessee Vol football game, like 10 years ago and that is still the loudest noise I have ever heard in person. Over 112,000 humans screaming 'WOOOOO' at the same time lol.
right on man, Americans welcome friendly people like you :)
I haven’t been able to go to France for 6 years hopefully I’ll be there in 2020 love the country so much. Lived in Marseille in 2009. We have great barbecue and Provence has great bouillabaisse.
I love how the owner of Rendezvous gave homage to the slaves for their role in pioneering American bbq. ❤👌
Natives are the ones who pioneered it. Mexicans and blacks just copied them. The name “barbecue” comes from the native word “barbacoa” which is how the natives used to cook meat really slowly by digging a hole in the ground and covering it with cactus leaves. And it started in Texas that’s why it’s called Texas barbecue.
Hellen seem like the type of woman you marry grow old with....grow economically with....and stay happy all the while....good spirit....

Ol dude at the end is a G for telling the truth about the origins of ribs/bbq..
Agreed
Had the pleasure of happening upon Peg Leg Porker in Nashville last November. It was very crowded for good reason. It's truly fantastic BBQ. The ribs are fantastic!
Hearing amazing grace “how sweet the sound “ with that southern flare as you arrived with the fires burning almost moved me to tears. My grandfather would get up early start the fires wake my brother up and I for breakfast and either a fishing or hunting trip whenever we visited our grandparents for an extended visit from our hometown of DC. This clip really moved me to tears . There is something to be said about Mrs Helen style of cooking . It will have you crying not only from the smoke and heat index in the smoke room but from the soul and taste and feeling of the food itself . God bless you munchies for giving me a slight piece of my child hood those trips to my Nana and Papa house in the country! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Man I love how the last guy gives credit to the african american people from back in the day for creating barbecue
It's like giving Mexicans credit for tacos. Everyone already fucking knows.
Well, they don't give credit because it really isn't true, the spanish and the Indians coined the term for cooking over green wood called barbacoa, here, this from the Smithsonian:
The first indigenous tribes Christopher Columbus encountered on
the island he named Hispaniola had developed a unique method for cooking
meat over an indirect flame, created using green wood to keep the food
(and wood) from burning. Reports indicate that the Spanish referred to this new style of cooking as barbacoa:
the original barbecue. As the Spanish explorers who followed Columbus
turned their expeditions north, they brought the cooking technique with
them. In 1540, close to present-day Tupelo, Mississippi, the Chicksaw
tribe, in the presence of explorer Hernando de Soto, cooked a feast of pork over the barbacoa. Eventually, the technique made its way to the colonies, traveling as far north as Virginia.
And here's the whole article: www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/the-evolution-of-american-barbecue-13770775/?no-ist
*****
My retarded article is from the smithsonian, there's literally no better source, if you don't care about it, you never cared about the truth in the first place, which is endemic of a professional black victim. Chris columbus did indeed discover america, of course everybody knew once he arrived that they weren't the first on the land, the king of spain knew it, the sailors knew it, however he did discover it, because the Indians didn't know where they were, didn't know what the world looked like, they had no context--the vikings were in america before columbus yet they didn't discover it, why? Because they didn't place it in context. Context. Placement in the big picture...that's discovery.
You getting asshurt over Christopher Columbus doesn't change the fact that barbecue has Native American/Spanish roots.
dav dav
Ummm, no, because we have primary sources for all of it, so your wrong, you'll always be wrong because apparently, you're an idiot. Go figure.
Helen is magnetic.... I'm in love.
smallnumbers36 my home state
I know!! I live half an hour from lexington. Def going to look her place up!
Your pfp makes that perfect
WOW! I want to do this exact road trip now! Wouldn't mind showing up at Helen's with a flask of whisky and watch and listen quietly in the corner. These are my people just in the sense that I have lived in the south my entire life and I am proud that they are my people. Hardworking honest pork lovers.
I’ve watched this at least one hundred times, I’m actually sad this video ends, all the amazing people, incredible food, and one hell of a host! I want to see more of this, exactly like this !
U and me both brother
One of the best episodes yet! Great host and guests, editing was great, humor, just wow... Im happy and hungry :D
Probably one of the best Munchies to date. Just true genuine people sharing what they love with others.
Great video! What I love the most is that every person at every stop is cordial and proud of what they do yet they know other flavors and processes exist. They love what they do and want to share it with the world. And I am quite Happy to give them my money for some great BBQ. Chicago out!
See how great people from the southern states are, super friendly and very humble. It's a shame that they are usually represented by the media in such negative way. The real soul of America.
Its like that in Sweden too. The country folks are portrayed as ignorant and prejudice by the media and politicians in the cities.
Divide and conquer. Old as time.
One thing among others I really love about the States is a generous size of the portion that comes with a great price.
+Alan Shore Mom and pop shops seem to be the best at giving you a great value. corporate places are usually the complete opposite.

You've missed the part where I told you to fuck off. Fuck off, douchebag.
Me too but that's also why we are the unhealthiest in the world lol
It's speaks to the authenticity of good BBQ when the people that make it are so genuine.
The last place in Memphis might have the history and legacy and what not, but I would go to Helen's any day everyday. That passion from Helen was amazing to watch !
Man when I watch bbqin videos I’m just smiling these people straight love what they do!
I'm from West Tennessee, born and raised, and this video made me missed home, and Tennessee BBQ. Moved to Georgia a while back and the BBQ isn't the same. BBQ is such a big part of West TN culture, especially in the Black Community. There was always a BBQ option in most mom and pop restaurants. If you couldn't make up your mind on what to eat BBQ would be the next option since it was always ready. Every time we go visit family we make sure to bring back loads of BBQ with us.
It also made me realize that i missed TN heavy accents. lol
Born in Nashville and grew up there. I'm also in Georgia now and agree with you 100% on all points. Nashville has changed so much in the past 20 years, but I still miss it.
I love bbq and yuna
Just about everyone in Tennessee is this humble and kind just as the host of the restaurants
I appreciate everyone in this video, the last guy really brought it home! Great human story!
Dang
Reggie turner's voice is beautiful
Singing like that in the early hours of morning, facing the fire and preparing the BBQ
That's something I would like to experience
Accent overload
english is my 2nd language and it was damn hard to understand to some people
Joseph Kroon
These are some heavy southern accents, no doubt
You are referring to the British dude, right?
American Man I don’t talk southern even though I was born here but it doesn’t even sound like an accent to me anymore😂
this short completely opened my eyes... I will never bad mouth north american food ever..... even makes me want to visit this country
The simplicity and joyous lives of these people is something I will forever envy they dont want or need anything but good company, safety, good food and good fun.
Imagine sitting on a log by a fire, hearin' that man sing like that and eatin' some of that kickass bbq. The epitome of relaxing.
one of THE best munchies episodes. awesome host, editing and guests!
Those southern folks really know their BBQ. Much respect
Probably my favorite food documentary of all time. The people featured in this video and their style of BBQ are truly special.
They all seemed like amazing people that I would love to one day come and visit to try their food but also just talk to them. Especially Helen, She seems like such a wonderful person.
Great video Munchies! Really nice to see America in a different light.
Helen was such a treat -- I'm in love with her warm attitude
Love the production quality of the video and the narrative. Showing some true respect with regards to the history of the food is always appreciated, especially from a native Tennessean, or southerner for that matter. :)
What an amazing journey. The people you met are just amazing and so talented. You can see why people in general fall in love with the South. I just hope I can experience it myself in my lifetime. made me envious.
God knows how many times I've watched this thing. Dank vid
I am glad You fould the food from where I live so interesting it's great btw
One of the best Series you´ve ever had
Loved all the food talk and getting to know these delicious restaurants, but that ending with the bow and arrows was hilarious and probably my favorite part!
Great video, I enjoyed every Second of it. the love they have for the BBQ world was crazy. Thank you!
Good job finding some of these places off the beaten path. It's interesting seeing these small town restaurants.
Now this was thoroughly enjoyable. This is what I come to Munchies to see :)
Man this made me cry, I;m not even southern, the host is just so damn likeable and so are the restaurant owners.
8:33 🤣Dudes face walking to the back room says it all
4:33 That is the sexiest accent I've ever heard.Good god!
Southern States are full of amazing people.
Where are you? It's not an accent in Tennessee.
That must be the ONLY accent you're ever heard then! lol
i really love the vibes going on in Helen & husband
I'm from England and when I see these kinds of videos it gives a great insight into what real Americans are like.
So wild how an Englishman comes to the south to try BBQ. The difference in dialects is enough to watch. Funny how all the locals cleared out as soon as he sat down lol. Great lookin BBQ
Helen's is so legit. song and tears go into the process of making the food!
damn Ron Jeremy got some moves
It makes me so happy that there are people out there with this passion. Its more than food.
i loved watching this, theres such love these ppl have for their food....wish all ppl could share this
thank you for a brilliant documentary
I just ate...hungry again. Need to recreate this road trip
A road trip through every BBQ state is my bucket list.
This bbq series in Tennessee is absolutely amazing!

what an awesome show!
I love the way the interviewer/reporter just lets the subject speak without interuption.
Lovely people.
I wanna see all of them and give them a big hug
Friend, you should have traveled the whole state. Tennessee is a melting pot of different styles. I grew up East of Nashville in Mt. Juliet. The Masonic Lodge BBQed every Independence Day as a fund raiser. We cooked shoulders over hickory coals. Covered with cardboard. Stabbed the meat with long knifes and rubbed salt into the cuts and on the surface. About 18 hours on the pit. Different sauces different years. Sometimes vinegar based, sometimes ketchup based. One year we even had a crazy black sauce with fine-chopped onions in it. I believe that’s a Kentucky thing.
oh my GOD. I need some bbq now!
+Allexander DM Step into my cage and you can little boy

You did an amazing job with this video. God bless you!
pure americana! cannot get enough of this episode.
I'm so proud of my TN roots!
Truly amazing, so authentic, love it!
Nice to hear Estuary English alongside 'Southern' English. What a great language we share! And I speak German, French and Spanish as well, so I love accents.
that beginning of the video dance is excellent!

Well done! Love the story and experience you bring to food tasting
