Toyota's hybrid sales are taking off, meanwhile Tesla's EV sales are decreasing. Is the market speaking? Does the customer actually want hybrids in the near term?

This issue could be resolved tomorrow if Tesla provided a 15-year iron-clad unlimited mileage warranty on their batteries/drivetrain. The risk of buying a used Tesla would drop. Tesla needs to develop a method to certify a battery (used, or used involved in an accident). When a light crash results in a $60K car being written off for battery fears, you have a major problem.

All the emissions reductions becomes a lot less impressive when you consider the amount of waste their vehicles make at end of life which comes way sooner than any Toyota.

Rarely run beyond the battery but when I do, excellent economy. No range anxiety, no searching for non-broken charging stations, no waiting. No $60,000 degrading battery to worry about. EV's are definitely in our future, but banking on it to be the entirety is just very risky and not very well calculated. Hybrid and plug-in hybrids just make way more sense for a lot of people at the moment. I recently drove a 2023 Tesla Model Y for about 5 days and I loved, even took it on a 600-mile riadtrip and I like the idea of not having to use gas but at the moment it is just not very feasible for me as an apartment dweller.

I agree, years of strategic decisions by Toyota on hybrid technology are about to explote on Tesla’s face! The new Camry (is the sign that shoppers were waiting) has the potential to produce a significant shift towards Toyota in the next 5-10 years, coupled with the abandonment of American manufactures of sedans and irrelevant competition from luxury brands on mass production vehicles, we have the perfect (T-storm) ‘T’ for Toyota (punt intended) for everyone. Toyota has also rejuvenated their designs (they are not boring anymore) and are more sophisticated than ever before, Toyotas don’t break, come with 2 years of free service, and the list just keeps going on and on … even manufactures like Honda are feeling the Toyota pinch right now, but for Tesla, it could be devastating.

It was fun to see just what kind of mileage I could get out of a tank of gas. A few trips out to the coast and just cruising around, visiting different areas and driving back I averaged over 50mpg. Plus, giving it the whip, it would get up and go! They also do not require a dedicated charge. I have no issue at all with full EV's, I'm sure they fit very well into many people's lives.

History will show the DealBook Summit in late 2023 is when Elon Musk officially 'Jumped the Shark' with his erratic behavior. Tesla HAS NOT had a new profitable volume product release since the Model Y. Meanwhile, Tesla has many initiatives underway with no demonstrable evidence an effort will move to profitable volume production - only words. Production Level-5 FSD/Robotaxi is perceived as a fail despite incremental Level -2 improvements.
The consensus is the leader of the Tesla Supercharger network pushed back on the ask of staff reductions and Musk did not take kindly to her attitude and 'defiance'. and fired all within the group. He did the same thing at Twitter when he decided to clean house and Twitter has never recovered. Musk feels the need to show people he is THE BOSS (regardless of the repercussions to the business). The repercussions of Musk's absence from being at Tesla WORKING is showing (in a bad way). A 25% reduction in demand is enough to hurt Tesla badly and destroy the long-believed growth narrative.

Once that happens with even less maintenance than hybrids and greater charging access the game spins over. One key issue is hybrids cannot meaningfully come down in price. This is not even a question of what people want .... I would love to have a 100% electric vehicle. Its about what is practical. Currently available rechargeable battery technology is not sufficient for a fully electric vehicle that matches the usability of an internal combustion vehicle (ICE). Also the power grid and typical home wiring is also not ready for the massive charging current demands that widespread use of such vehicles would result in. In addition to all that, electric vehicles are not price competitive with ICE vehicles and government subsidies or tax breaks can't remedy that. The only available solution is to migrate to more fuel efficient and cleaner burning ICE vehicles. Hybrids can help this although they use the same inadequate battery technology. I owned a Honda Civic Hybrid and was very disappointed in it, eventually having to trade it in when the battery pack went bad at 35K miles right after the warranty expired. Was going to be about 1/5 the cost of a brand new vehicle to get a refurbished battery. No thanks.
Right now, electric vehicles are only practical for owners who drive less that around 30 miles per day and have access to a charging station at work and at home or drive very infrequently. For long trips or long daily commuting to work, it simply takes too long to recharge them.

$40-50K for a Model Y is hard to beat. I don't think it's the cars that's pushing customers away, it's the insurance and lack of infrastructure for charging.

That translates to 70-80k in Canada, and the dollar doesn't go far here. They're losing sales outside of the states, as are other companies that sell egregiously priced EVs. The only affordable cars in the ev and hybrid market in Canada at least are Hyundai and Toyota, and the latter is the go-to atm and likely going forward.

The only way people buy EV's right now (both in the US and Europe too) is due to subsidizing them into oblivion.
No sane person would pay for an EV if not for all the extra's the governments throw at them. In some European countries (Belgium mainly) the amount of leased cars as part of an extralegal package from your employer is the play, all because taxes on labor are insane. Those people wouldn't be getting an EV in the first place if not for some loopholes companies use.

@@wimgeuens8433 true, but Brussel has decided that we must have EV'S and we will.......the EV train cann't be stopped. Unfortunatly.
And Toyota has to act, must come up with excellent EV'S in Europe, from an imago point of view alone.... . Kia/Hyundai have surpassed Toyota in the Green imago ' departement '.
So I really think Hybrid sales are not to stay, not in Northern Europe anyway.

why these EV fanboys and anti EV people think the world have to CHOOSE EV or ICE car?
for some use EV is good enough or even superior to ICE car.
    HYBRIDS make perfect sense.

This is because Toyota was barely making any hybrid for a long time since 2019 due to supply chain issues. This is accumulated demand from the past few years. You will need to look at the data across the past 5+ years to see the big picture.
In the vs Tesla side, Tesla had a slow ramp in Q1 with the new model3 and you can tell by their production number. On the Model Y side, many are waiting for ModelY Refresh.
The living in an apartment thing is true, but this is not the whole picture when looking at specificly Toyota and Tesla

@@baldisaerodynamic9692 not saying it is wrong doing on Toyota's part. that's not my point. It is to remind everyone how little supply there was just a year ago, high yoy growth is an obvious result of that, there could be a slow down on EV due to many factors such as interest rate and crazy production capabilities increase in the past few years on Tesla side, but yoy growth is not a good metric in this context.
