      Wonderful. But guess what, there is something even better. You just need to open your eyes and learn some new things. Unless you prefer to stick in your old ways. PHEVs are just gas cars with a little bit of ev stuck in. A frankenstein if you will. A compromise for multiple things. Rather than having the best of the best with one thing. Kind of obvious if it did not occur to you. We own 2 Tesla evs. over 140k miles. No gas for 5 years and no maintenance. You still have a gas car, plus an ev crammed in to the same body. Less space as a result. More problems, more complicated. You have 2 cars worth of parts and complication. Is that better? I think a 5 year old would understand why that is not a good thing. BTW, we can drive all over the country, in winter, in summer, does not matter. The fact is our car is going to handle better, be better in the snow due to the physics, balance etc. Our evs are also the safest cars ever tested; not even close.

    I genuinely considered an EV… I currently have a 2007 Lexus LS460L. I can easily go 500 miles on one tank of fuel. It takes minutes to fill up. I recently went to Oklahoma from California and back. It took 23 hours with only stops for fuel and food each way. Could you imagine how much time that would have added if I had an EV? I’ve gone from California to Washington, California to South Dakota etc. I only get so much vacation time every year, I don’t want to add days to a trip because I have to charge my car. I even recently went on a trip to the sequoia national forest in California. The hotel I stayed at in the park was literally ran on a diesel generator. There was no EV charging there. I just don’t think EV’s fit every lifestyle. Additionally, my car has nearly 200,000 miles. Maybe a delicately cared for battery could last that long but I doubt it. So I’d most likely have spent money to replace the battery by this point in time. Also, my commute used to be 180 miles a day, sometimes I visit and check in with my grandparents, making my total miles driven in one day over 300 miles. That means I’d have to charge my car on top of commuting and visiting family, I’m tired, I wanna go home and relax. Also my household has 4 cars, 2 park on the street, where would they charge? As for a used EV, how do I know the exact health and state of the battery? It could be good today and be bad tomorrow.

    • @DS9FANINDADEFIANT
      @DS9FANINDADEFIANT Před 3 dny

      An EV doesn't sound like it's for you. Really what people need is consumer choice. The biggest benifit of an EV is cheap electricity at home, and always waking up with ~250 miles. If that isn't suitable, then EV infrastructure isn't there yet. It will be. One day. But not now. Till then, I will say now that on average the batteries outlast the cars (or have been the case for about 10 years now) which I think is cool, but makes sense if you think that all manufacturers warranty a battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles which is more than you'll ever get for a combustion car. As someone that used to own a gas car and switched to electric about 10 years ago, I would never go back, technology is always improving. And one day a consistent 500 mile EV will be possible. It costs too much right now though. But as I say, one day.

    EV charging networks can never be economic. Just apply a little bit of common sense. Firstly they are space inefficient due to the long refueling time, which limits where you can put them at sufficient scale to have an attendant guarding them from vandalism and generating the extra revenue from the convenience store. A refueling convenience store can not be profitable in the same small space as it can with gas refueling due to the much lower throughput of customers. Also fast charging power loads requires trunk grid connections which simply do not exist everywhere, else as more vehicles charge simultaneously the available power drops and all vehicles charge slower. Tesla is subsidized by selling carbon credits, which is just government redistribution. IOW an uneconomic, failure-directed paradigm.

    Cheaper energy $ if charging at home and lower maintenance savings are main reasons to move away from ICE vehicles. The negatives though far outweigh the two main benefits. Negatives - faster rate of depreciation, higher insurance rates, higher repair costs, lack of trained techs, urban street charging challenges, evacuating areas during hurricane- thousands of cars need charging for 20 mins - wow, less range in extreme hot/cold weather regions, shorter tire life, and lack of used market transparency of how the battery was changed by previous owner (s) which leads to shorter battery life and high replacement costs. Also, 70% of global rare earth minerals are mined in China. It’s not prudent to have a high reliance of critical components from one source. Not sure what the answers to fix above challenges but the media keeps reporting that people aren’t buying EV’s because of a lack of charging and high prices but they conveniently don’t mention all the other negatives that are more difficult to solve.

However since then prices have declined to a more reasonable level which for those who purchased at the peak have experienced the dramatic decline. I would argue that EV depreciation will decrease to more moderate levels going forward. A factor that could inhibit this could be the continued innovation with new battery technologies that could make older EVs less desirable or even obsolete.

When cars were invented, horse drawn carriages were still the majority until prices were affordable for cars and infrastructure was built to handle the volume of new adopters.

    After buying a used ID4 and using electrify america
    1) only buy an ev that has tesla charge network available already
    2) ill replace my 2nd car (currently gas)with another utilitarian gas car pickup or suv that can tow 4k+ pounds, 4wd etc... i rarely drive as i work from home so the 2nd car is just for those type of tasks. My wife uses the ev everyday.
    Before owning the id4 i would have said all ev both cars. But after living with the id4, I still need one gas car as well for longer trips. But i bet my thoughts would be different if i had the model y and not the id4 because of the charging network.
    Dont get me wrong i still can do the longer trip but playing the roulette game of will it connect or not with electrify america when i just want to charge for 20 mins and get home sucks.

Hybrid technology is as far as I’ll go, will not go all in on EV ever ! Gas is cheap here and will go back down after the next election. Avg 37- 42 mpg with a lead foot. 👍

    Had a Model Y for 3 years and went back to gas. Long story short, charging is ANNOYING! It takes a long time, isn't cheap, and is something you have to think about all the damn time. Charging at home is fine until you see your electric bill skyrocket. I did it, had some fun and over it.

    • @DS9FANINDADEFIANT
      @DS9FANINDADEFIANT Před 3 dny

      Yeah but you don't realise how much gas costs you. Yes your electricity bill may skyrocket. But electric charged at home is often double as cheap as gas. Sadly people dont think like that.

      @@DS9FANINDADEFIANT I did the math and about broke even charging at home. But supercharging changed quite a bit between when I purchase my car and sold it; about 20 bucks to fill it then 40. For about 30 bucks I can fill the tank on my Accord hybrid and get a good 500 miles out of a tank versus the Tesla that got about 300 miles per ”tank”. I did the math because I owned one and pinched every penny I could. I found a cheap way to charge the car but it took forever. Wanna know what made me sell it ultimately? The $2000 bill to replace a headlight that went bad on the car. I did it myself for $150 (the cost of the headlight on EBay) and 2 hours of my time to tear apart the front end and put it back together. Imagining how much Tesla would charge to fix something I couldn’t do myself, the thing had to go.

      @@darthdorkimusprime7231 it doesn't take a genius to realise that a headlight is nothing to do with it being an EV. Also I'm not sure where you got that gas is anywhere near as cheap as electric. Either you have stupid high electricity bills or you don't travel that much anyway so the difference doesn't seem as much. I Drive 16000 miles a year in an EV and my difference is about $1500 between my Ford and my tesla. Crazy difference. Plus the tesla has been more reliable and the servicing is basically non existent beyond air con and tyres. Anyway. I'm not judging, Evs aren't for everyone, and I think the point is that we should all be able to choose what we want. But for me electric cars are a no brainer.

    One thing EV lovers dont understand is EVs are not convenient for the avg person. Not everyone owns a home with a garage and much less people one to spend on modifying their home to add fast charging.
    On top of that most people I know who own EVs also have another gas powered car or hybrid.
    This is the result of government trying to force the hand of the market.
    Myself I am waiting for EV prices to come down, like Chinese level down cause these are pretty much smartphones on wheels.

    if you keep your car for 15-20 years, depreciation isn't even a thought, and I'd highly recommend anyone who buys a car (EV or ICE) to have a long-term expectancy to their purchase. Better for everyone financially, you learn how to service it yourself, you take better care of it, and you're more inclined to repair it (or have it repaired) when things break. If your battery fails, replace it and keep on going.

    A lot of people talking down to the non EV crowd are missing the point. Most Americans can only afford one car at current prices. They need that vehicle to be able to do everything. Commuting, long distance, taking the kids to school, etc. They are not going to buy an EV. Most people I know that own an EV, myself included, have a secondary ICE vehicle for long distance.

    I don't honestly think full EV vehicles will take off until we switch to a Solid State technology once it is commercially available. From an environmental and geo-political issue, the current resource extraction is questionable and not necessarily environmentally friendly, at least until we can effectively recycle battery materials. The best bet at the very least are hybrids and plug-in hybrids. Toyota had it correct all along with their fuel efficient hybrids, and they are developing a solid state battery at the same time. Plus their ICEs burn gas super clean and efficiently. From an american standpoint, we also need to develop our Lithium and precious resources HERE as much as possible to be energy independent.
