    Sabalenka clearly has so much potential. A great serve, a powerful physique (great shoulders), good core strength, above average movement, competent at the net, she can hit good slice, and then what impresses me most is she can hit very heavy topspin but also flatten it out with power when she needs to. So many of these heavy topspinners - Mauresmo, Kuznetsova, Kasatkina, Martinez, Stosur, Sabatini - can come unstuck when facing a power player with the strength, timing and physical height to get on top of the bounce and nail the shorter ball caused by the topspin. Even Nadal sometimes has this issue against Djokovic.
    The worry with Sabalenka is whether physically and mentally she can continue to play at this high octane level. She clearly puts so much effort into each shot. Then there's also the pressure. She'll never again be as free swinging and fearless as she is at the moment. I've seen no end of players great for a few tournaments over the years. Also, as touched on above, will she slip into bad habit with her topspin and start dropping the ball short with lazy loopers? It happens to the best of them, so you want to wonder. For this reason I would never coach a child to play with heavy topspin as default mode.
    Lastly, why has she only just broken through? A player as impressive as she is usually has a few years behind them at age 20, whereas she only really has a few months. When a player does well so suddenly you wonder whether it's built on sand and all their old demons will come back to them as soon as they get a bad loss or feel the pressure.
    She's definitely very impressive and exciting though. The scary thing is I think she's probably far from reaching her highest level yet.

    With that big backswing I'm amazed how cleanly she contacts and controls the ball. Also it is very hard to read the shot due to that wild back swing. Though I wish she would tone down the unessessary over the top grunting. But Congratulations on your 1st WTA title.

    Since everyone already highlighting her power, her grunt and the angle she capable to make, let me highlight her fearless attitude and mentality. She's tough, she gives no shit whether you are Miyu Kato or Serena Williams, she'll hit the ball hard like there's no tomorrow, that's for sure. But, recalling some of her past matches, she could crack when she's overly excited (probably why she called Dmitry to the court at 5-4 so Sharapova Tianjin's case is not repeated again) or meeting a resilient defender like the case of Mertens. Can she beat crafty players? Yes she can but it will be a tougher match for her compared to outgunning someone in the battle of big hitter. Bet it will be a stellar match if Sabalenka meet Kasatkina and full blown battle if she meet Ostapenko, Sakkari or Sharapova (just watch Tianjin final and see for yourself)

  • @Alfredul03
    @Alfredul03 Před 6 lety +1

    A GS is much more different than these tournaments, because there is more competition, more players and the pressure is much higher there than here. Sabalenka is a great player, I love it because she hits the ball very hard and looks for some incredible angles on each side of the court. However, she has some things to improve, among them, her way of handling her attitude on the court, sometimes takes a despair that catches her and has not even come to define in her favor some points and even a match. She "could" be one of the favorites, but doesn't absolutely the favorite, as I said, there will be many hungry girls and desire to make a dent in this tournament. 👍🏻🎾🏆💯

    Congs to Aryna. Worth to note that all her powerful hits in to all angles can be neutralized by a player with volley and net play. So she must learn of not only baseline play. Often reach net and volley too. The other thing is that she can easily tear her health with such power. So health saving concept is most important to obtain hights in tennis. Once again CONGS TO HER 1ST TITLE.

  • @dandresaldi
    @dandresaldi Před 6 lety +5

    She is playing amazing but its too soon to call her a future GS champion, this is a preparation tournament so top players don't take it serious. Lets wait until she does well at a GS or a 1000, she has the game but for big wins the most importantly thing is mentality and to perform well under pressure, many players are very good until they have to serve for the set or the match, specially in big moments.

      Your observations are spot on. I've observed Sabalenka for a while now and my pre-game expectations from her has swung sharply from "expected to loose due to excessive unforced errors" to "strong favorite because of strong powerful shots". In the past 2 months she has matured exponentially.

    I was annoyed with comparisons like Osaka-Serena in the past. People tend to exaggerate when one player wins a wta tournament. But Sabalenka, got a good package of skills to become an emblematic player. Just Simo could stop her(lately) from her very good form.

  • @shaydelgado
    @shaydelgado Před 6 lety +2

    One thing I like from Sabalenka is not just the easy power but the angles she can produce. And she can volley too. But she got to shut the volume down on that grunt. To be fair, CSN is a good match up for her hence the easy win.

    • @nreeldeep1
      @nreeldeep1 Před 6 lety +2

      That's not easy power. Her back swings are enormous and she puts alot of torque in her racquet swings. Nothing at all easy especially on that forehand.

  • @sidds3180
    @sidds3180 Před 6 lety +1

    I’m her biggest fan IF she reduces her, in my opinion, far too unnecessary grunting. But apart from her grunting, that game is as fearless and ruthless as you will ever have seen on the women’s tour. And to boot, Tursunov is her coach?!! Remember that guy used to wreak havoc on the men’s tour when he was on.

  • @MagicRon97
    @MagicRon97 Před 6 lety +2

    Two things: people like to complain a lot about Sabalenka's grunting. The Australian's nailed her for it when she played Barty at the Australian open this year, but I personally have got used to it. I'm sure her opponents have dealt with grunting players enough times to know how to tune it out. I think people need to get over it and admire Sabalenka for her game. Also, I think Sabalenka should get a second coach or replace Dmitrov in the next year or so. His career high ranking is number 20 in singles which is exactly where Sabalenka is at now. Also, he has never won grand slams or made it past the fourth round of one, so Sabalenka would have a better chance of winning one with a coach that has had a more extensive tennis career.
