- In early February 2017, Rachel De Jong proposed a brief detour for a swim at a scenic river spot near the Aratiatia Dam, known for its natural rock pools and formations and the dam opening, during which water dramatically rushes into the river. As Rachel de Jong and her friends made their way down the trail, they heard the sirens around 11:40 a.m. but saw no signs warning them of the impending danger. The dam was scheduled to release water around noon. But within minutes, the situation would take a dramatic as the Aratiatia Damn upstream had started to open.

RIP Rachel de Jong. Just so sad when someone dies when it was so avoidable. All she had to do was go home instead of swimming that day. My prayers go out to her family. Dams are no joke, and swimming near one or a resoviour, you gotta think twice about it.

That was an excellent episode as usual & even more so being a NZ'er. Pretty damn good pronunciation of the Maori place names I have to say. Another Outdoor Disaster from NZ that isnt often mentioned Internationally & that you may choose to look into is that of the Rose Noelle. I'll post this but probably should have looked on the channel page to see if you have a submission section or something along those lines. A great episode though JR. Cheers.
What sort of monster steals a warning sign?
Oh dear I already know the story 😂
Sadly even the warning sign doesn't tell you there be a siren before a water release. I don't think the warning sign would have made any difference . They said a few of them had been there before.
Sanest New Zealander.

dumb kids for fun, a sign? you kidding, thats the only thing to warn people? such a dangerous area should be fenced off completely.
The loss of such a bright, lovely young life brings tears to this mamma's eyes. RIP Rachel for sure you are shining brightly on the other side, knowing how much you were loved and that you passed in an act of pure unselfishness. May Rachel's family find solace in having been blessed with such a special daughter 🙏💓 JR you told this with such respect and kindness, I am sure anyone who was involved, should they watch this, will be moved by your narration, thanks and congrats on 75K, now onward to 100K!!
Thank you so much Marie! Whenever I make a video, I do with the notion that if the subject of the video or a loved one of the subject watched the video, I would want them see this video as a respectful to their story.
Beautifully said about a horrible tragedy, Marie. May God Bless Rachel and her family and thank you for telling this story with such gentleness and dignity, OD.
Bright people don't go swimming next to a goddamn hydroelectric dam. They knew that this area was dangerous and off-limits; their families should have better educated those morons.
Rest in Peace, Miss Rachel.
My condolences to her family and friends. 🌹
❤❤
Who, for the love of everything that's holy, steals the warning sign and FOR WHAT??? What a terrible tragedy for such a young girl with so much promise. Condolences to her family and friends. Tragic.
Someone probably thought it would make a cute decoration for their dorm room, to let their friends know what a disaster area their dorm room was. Which it probably was, but not in the sense of a real and deadly actual disaster.
In the future, spray paint the warning on rocks. That should make it less attractive as well as more difficult to steal.

It has been said that on that day, all the hikers heard the 3 alarm sirens coming from the dam. Didn't they all have ears to hear? For me, it was a deliberate desire to ignore the danger. I live near a river with rapids, swimming and rafting activities. A few km upstream. There is a large dam, which long before releasing water, gives 3 very loud sound signals. In about 60 years of activity, there have been no deaths.
Facts 👍 👍
Yea, even near the dam here for the state park/lake in our rural area (I’m 1 mile from where the lake starts, and 6 miles from the dam), they sound off alarms when releasing water. Signs are up everywhere telling people to pay attention to it and discourage anyone remaining in the area below it for safety.
When it rains a lot during the spring months once the lake is refilled (they let all the water out every winter), they have to release water or else it will back up here where I live (above the dam) and cause a lot of flooding. They have to be careful with it cause it can also cause flooding below the dam, so they’ll periodically release it and have the National Guard checking water levels, each time with alarms.
No deaths related to anything like this with that dam, either.
They ignored the warning sirens.
If you were bush walking to a river where you had been to before with no problems & heard a siren faintly & it is faint would you know exactly what it was for if you didn't know release times?
@@my12spoonswithrose43 it says right in the video that she was very familiar with the area.
I doubt, she was the 1st to die this way, but given most thrillseekers are men, it never made the news.
Because its a young attractive intelligent woman it gets the headlines. Given the danger of the river, u would think that sign. Would have been replaced immediately.
@@robertmitchell6080 you would think they shouldnt have even needed a sign
If two of them were "familiar with the area", would they have missed seeing sign from previous trips? No one researched where they were going?

As BEAUTIFUL as that place is , and that gorgeous water , I most probably would feel false sense of security 😖 And I have no idea what I would do if one of my friends would get swept away ,, i think I would have jumped in to save them also thinking I could save them and not really understanding that danger as well 😢GOD BLESS RACHEL FOR HER ABSOLUTE LOVE FOR HER FRIENDS ❤
This was a tough one. I wonder if the person who stole the signs knows what happened to her. Her poor family.
If it was known for the dam release, why wouldn't they connect a warning siren by a dam to the dam release. And some were familiar with the area. And that missing warning should tell people what the sirens mean.
Those 2 police officers should have known better too.
Exactly!
Can I ask your objective in posting this?

She’d been there many times before so she ignored the sign before. It’s sad. Don’t blame the sign steeler. She knew she shouldn’t have been there.
The people who chose to ignore the siren and enter a well-known dangerous body of water are to blame.
I’m sure there were more than just one sign. Also, several of the people in this group were well aware that it could be a potentially dangerous area to swim in.
She would have been staring down the barrel of her selfie stick at her hot ta-ta’s and wouldn’t have seen the sign even if it was there

So sad. If only she just decided to head straight home instead of a quick swim.
@@outdoordisasters yeah I agree, I think swimming in a river is risky, too bad the people who built the dam couldn't have made the Siren alerting the gates are opening louder or the sign could've been replaced. It's just so tragic cause she was so young and had her life ahead of her.

I remember Mister Ballen told this story in one of his videos on CZcams. Thank you for all the visuals 🤙🏼
Me too. Big fan.
I always taught my kids and their friends that the most beautiful things in nature are the most deadliest too. 😞
Wow. To go swimming in a dam. You've got to be very brave to attempt that.
Um…that’s called STUPIDITY. NOT bravery.
It's done quite often here as we have so many, I did it as a kid & it carries on. We are taught to look for the signs for release times so we know when to avoid it which is why they are so important & as a country that is surrounded by water with us spending so much time in it must of us are very responsible. Also she WASNT in the dam she was down river from it which is totally different.
These changes should have been made right from the beginning because management of the dam knew that people
were swimming there, therefore it is better to install preventive ways before a disaster than after it.
There is nothing you can do to stop people from doing dangerous things no matter how hard you try, someone will found a way to bypass whatever you install to stop them.
But people are still swimming there even with the fence to stop them.
What a sad, sad story. Looks like a beautiful place to swim, and I'm sure it's safer now than before. Unfortunately, it seems it always takes a tragedy to get safety improvements installed, no matter whether it's on roads and intersections or swimming areas. I feel for all in this group. I'm sure most or all of us did things like this when we were younger.
This is so sad. I can't imagine the horror her sister and friends must have felt watching her get swept away.....
Usually takes a tragic accident for big safety changes. Here in my area (and everywhere) there's always people who go places they shouldn't go or do things they shouldn't do in spite of all the fences and signage. Good video.
What kind of evil does it take to steal a warning sign?!
I was in NZ and knew about this river ... how this could happen to locals is astonishing....
Great video, so much detail and handled sensitively
The videos you create keep me coming back, and your voice is so unique ❤
They heard the sirens but went into the river anyway 😢
Yep, very stupid 🙄
When the water become ms full of air, or foamy, it is actually more difficult to stay afloat, and easier to sink into the water
Yes, definitely. I forget which video, but I go over how to survive being in foamy water.
Very sad indeed. Another brilliant presentation of tragedy and loss tactfully portrayed in a way only you can.
That is some clear water!
Thats NZ my friend. My homeland. 👍✌️🇳🇿 Sadly we have pollution problems that need addressing also, like any place where money has a greater influence than it truly should.
My prayer is that Rachel's family can find peace. My hope is that they take down the fence.
Take down the fence? It was put there to save people from their own stupidity. People can't protect themselves. They need signs and barriers t9 do it for them
Wow!! What a sad and tragic story!! Yikes!!! As a mother, my heart goes out so much to Rachel's father!! 🙏❤️ He had such a common sense approach to this horrible tragedy too!! And to the person or persons who stole the sign -- I say-- karma is a b_tch!!!! As always, thank you soooo much for another outstanding video!!! 💖 And congratulations 🎉 again!!!
So many times in these stories where loved ones always have to find blame. I get it, their hearts are broken. But Mr. DeJong handled this with class, understanding it was just wrong place, wrong time, horrible luck and no one is to blame. And his common sense approach to new changes are very fair and agree.
It's quite sad that the dam operators were so complacent about their water releases knowing full well that this was a popular swimming area. One question I have is whether it was necessary to release the water in such an abrupt manner, or could it have been released somewhat more gradually in order to give swimmers an opportunity to understand that the water was rising before it became an inescapable spate.
Dam gates are designed so that the water can be released quickly, without damage to the gates, the dam, and properties downstream. Dam designs usually focus on the integrity of the dam structure, and the management of the impounded water, and on electric power generation and maintenance. The many other factors involved with building a dam, such as possible environmental, geologic, and social impacts, are often not considered at all, especially with older dams. Destruction of natural and human communities, fisheries, wetlands, etc. are sometimes considered in modern hydro projects, but not always. The idea of protecting youngsters who foolishly choose to swim downstream of a dam is not normally a consideration.
On the other side of the situation, people who use unofficial paths to access areas that are not officially open to the public are not being safety conscious. With that kind of mindset, even if the dam operators could open the gates more slowly, the fun-focused people swimming below would be even less likely to realize that the water was rising. There would still be incidents, and tragedies.
Also, whenever a safety feature is added, there are some people who think, "OK, now it's safe to do that dangerous thing I've been doing. So I don't have to worry at all now!" They proceed to exercise less caution, so they can do faster, more exciting, and stupider activities. And still get themselves killed.
In this setting below the dam, the main thing that safety improvements provide is a shifting of liability from the operators to the reckless fun seekers. In the United States, such improvements might reduce the ability of surviving family members to win a wrongful death lawsuit against dam operators. I don't know the legal situation in New Zealand, so I can't comment on that.
They were never complacent, hence why the warnings went off & the sign was up. But if they are not told the sign is stolen or are waiting on a new one then they can't police the entry all day or night. People need to learn to think about their actions & stealing a sign could have other ramifications, but they never do.
How were they complacent? The warning sirens went off as scheduled at the appropriate intervals. The warning sign being stolen - likely by metal thieves like the ones who stole a cast iron firepit from my garden last year - was not there fault. This whole tragedy is a classic case of what in UK law would be classified as misadventure. It is also a reminder of the power of water and why you must always treat it with respect.
Being a Hydro-Electric dam, It may have to stop and start quickly to maintain "System stability" much like a Gas turbine generator would
It's a sad story no doubt, but people like this ruin it for everyone else. This is a beautiful area and now it's been completely fenced off.
For sure. I think unofficially, they didn't mind it. But after this, they had do something
Yep. Once again a little common sense would have saved a life.
Good God you're a heartless prick. Only an Internet commenter could come away after listening to a story of a young person tragically dying and say "they ruined it for everyone else."
With the sign stolen, was there some other way they could possibly know?
@@Gaius_Sinstone Yes. There were loud sirens on and around the damn. It seems like they would have known that the sirens meant something was going on. They knew they were Downstream from a dam. Like I said in my earlier comment, a little Common Sense goes a long way.

Swimming in there at all wouldn't be a good idea.
We used to jump off a railway bridge into the river, maybe a 60ft drop. The river frequently had islands of driftwood or submerged debris and the water was murky enough to not see them. Was a miracle nobody died. I don't even know why we did it lol

Yea boii have a nice day everyone!
Instead of adding a steel fence marring nature and stopping animal migration, how about making those "young, smart" people know that swimming in a river and one especially under a DAM is "inappropriate."
The infrastructure in all of our countries is being destroyed by mediocrity and corruption, intentionally endangering people, especially the young people. It’s criminal.
It's called common sense
Familiar with the area but not how they let water out of the dam everyday and that its not safe? I've heard this story on another channel and nothing said about stolen warning signs,
Lovin the new intro
Some young drunk party goer probably thought that sign would look cool in the garage or man cave. I hope they learned an important lesson here. Removing a stop sign can result in vehicular manslaughter charges. Someone is to blame even though the pathetic authority in this situation doesn't seem to think so.
The World Loves You, Rachael! May you rest in peace.
I think there was no warning sign in that area but they’re saying it was stolen to avoid full accountability
Seems odd anyone would feel the need to steal those specific signs.

Good the government install the sign and iron gate to prevent people going to that area.
All they have to do is slowly increase the discharge rate when opening the gates. It’s ridiculous to close off such an incredible area when it can be done safely.
Depending on the dam design, it may not be possible to open the gates slowly. Dams are not designed for the safety of unauthorized risk takers downstream.
No, they are not designed that way.

Being a Hydro-Electric dam, It may have to stop and start quickly to maintain "System stability" much like a Gas turbine generator would
We also have such dams in Switzerland......
Dam of Death is right! That dam is a man-made disaster that is already gravely affecting the surrounding environment:
"Fluctuating Waikato River levels south of Aratiatia Dam are being compared to a one in 200-hundred-year flood. Broadlands Forest resident Graham Sperry has lived near the edge of the Waikato River for 45 years. In the last 15 years the change, erosion and loss of the wetland by the river's edge, near his property has been "heart breaking."
"What's happened is as the water level fluctuates up and down and the velocity of the water can come in, it erodes the bank, and undercuts the looser soil underneath. It's over half a metre undercut... and the weight of vegetation above that is enough to make it collapse." The artificial control of water flows is to blame for the four metre variance in water height, sometimes several times a day.
"The ramping here is in the order of three to four metres, 14 feet and that has destroyed what used to be an extremely viable wetland habitat and that was assessed in 1996 as being a very healthy environment."
Over time as the water levels change silt has been deposited over vegetation and trees - leaving a visible trace of how high the water gets. The silt is suffocating plant life and provides a breeding ground for noxious weeds.
"The river is bringing in silt, a silt load every time it comes in here."
Not only is the river killing vegetation it has also meant wildlife that used to call the wetland area home have left. There was a "community" of invertebrate and native wildlife species that used to live in the wetland alongside the river included ducks, fantails, fowls, marsh crake, banded rail and bittern, but today "most of those are gone".
Mr Sperry and other community members want the Waikato Regional Council to review the consent for river flow levels and ensure that the environmental effects of "ramping the river" are being monitored more efficiently.
Graham says he doesn't want to cut down power generation, all he wants is for the river to be managed with a view to protect the environment and maintaining the natural wildlife.
He says Mercury should not be holding water back in Lake Taupo and "letting very high flows go during peak power period demands."

If they knew the sign was stolen, why didn't they replace it?
They might not have been told or a new one might have been ordered.
If you find yourself overwhelmed or overpowered by getting caught in a river current swim to the shoreline as quick as possible because eventually you will get swept into rocks or underwater tree hang ups... both which can quickly kill you... you can be injured by a raging current but you can always pull yourself out... if you get knocked out or pinned and drowned then your out... that's usually it... don't dwell even for a second on an injury if it occurs and swim strong AND fast to the shoreline and out of the main current asap.

Your advice was "swim to the shore".
Like, no sh*t.
What other advice do you have?
When jumping from a plane wear a working parachute.
Don't climb inside a live volcano.
When caught in a river swim for the shore.
When driving try not to have a car accident.
