Zelda II Enhanced PC Edition Fan Game Impressions (It's Awesome!)

- I saw there was a Zelda II PC Edition: Link is Adventuresome fan game from game developer, hoverbat, and downloaded it. I initially thought it was a HD update with some quality of life improvements, but it's so much more. I'm loving every moment of it. I've only gotten up to the island palace, but here are my impressions so far, focusing on the updates that I've really liked.
Link to the download of the Zelda 2 game from hover bat.

Also my Kotaku retrospective on Zelda II that I mentioned.

I just finished it. This game has utterly supplanted the “official” version in my mind. I can’t go back to the original.
Please tell us more!
@@stevebobhoracedownload the game and start playing!
the programming is horrid, how could it "supplant" the official one with which it is trying and failing to emulate? does actual programming not matter to gamers? it feels nothing like the original at all
@@skyscrapersx5877 This is a bit late, but if it feels noticeably different from the original, then it isn't working properly. There are some input and refresh issues that could be causing the disconnect.
@@stevebobhorace I completely agree with OP on this, because I have just played through this (both quests, because there is now a more extensive second quest with a bunch of new content) and it is the definitive version for me. It makes the original seem like an unfinished beta. I don't know what happened with the other commenter, but this game felt just like the original for me control-wise, no issues. There are a bunch of QoL updates which are worth it by themselves, but there are many new areas to explore, double the amount of equipment in Link's arsenal, and (finally!) a map system so exploring the palaces isn't nearly as much of a headache. If you played the original, it's definitely worth it because it revitalizes the game in a way I didn't expect. If you couldn't get through the original and gave up, you may want to give this version a try because, while it is still a challenging game, the updates mostly remove the unnecessary frustration that may have turned off players from going through the original.
Man...all these years later...its so hard to believe that MY best move remains the downward thrust, as well
yeah!
A Zelda 2 Remake in the style of Samus Returns would be the game to breath new lifebin Zelda
I loved Samus Returns and would gladly welcome a Zelda 2 in a similar style!
I'd love to see one in the style of the manual art
Nintendo is insane for not embracing games like this and paying people to upgrade existing games.
Absolutely. Imagine enhancements like this to games like Startropics or Mario 3. Nuts to see them leave money on the table just out of spite.
You obviously don't understand copyrights and what you actually have to do for a game to be released.
Nintendo embracing fan projects and paying the developers? Your comment is what sounds insane.
Personally, I'd like Nintendo to take a hint and give games like Zelda II and Kid Icarus the "Metroid Dread" treatment.
Yeah or atleast leave fanproject creators alone and not sue everybody into oblivion.
I was playing a lot of emulator games and Nintendo doesn't make a penny from these old titles but still they went after almost all the ROM sites.
But on Aliexpress and Amazon you can buy a million knockoff consoles and multi carts pirating Nintendo games...
If they go after these people I can understand but bullying the devs on cool projects like this is a problem?
I don't really understand why.
Thank you for putting the link in the description. Downloading this now.
Just played this and went out the back door of the palace, after trudging through a shallow lake was rewarded with a bonus xp bag. An amazing game, thank you for sharing!
I watched another CZcamsr's playthrough of this game from a year ago and knew I had to try it for myself. I was so excited to see that several changes/enhancements had been made since that video was posted. This really is the definitive version of the game and I strongly recommend those who have the desire to revisit the game, give this version a try. Oddly enough, I am at the same point in the game as you were at the time of recording. I still have no clue what the heck those peach-colored chu-chus are for though.... I find them in random places and the menu keeps a tally of how many you've killed... I guess I'll have to keep playing to find out.
Zelda 2 is absolutely a vibe. Love the work that was put into this.
Looks good! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you've been having fun. Thanks for showing this. Not big on the disappearing platforms.
At least is was done very well with the platforms animating just before disappearing. Something megaman didn't do.
Thanks a lot . I discover that new version of one of my favourites NES games. Currently downloading !
Coool! I had no idea this remake existed! I always wanted to play Zelda II someday. Now I'm going to do that right now!
Thanks for making this video about it to "adverise" its existance! Hehehe
Thanks for watching!
Death mountain can be made a ton easier by grinding levels in the 1 palace. You can get your attack all the way to level 9 in a couple hours and just steam roll the mountain. Been doing that since I was a kid.
it is funny killing the bosses in like 2 hits.
Good to see AoL get some love.
One of my favorites since I first fired it up!
The New Game Plus second quest has a bunch of differences as welll and has even more secrets and new content when you beat second quest.
Your thumbnail of Link fighting the giant night, I always thought was the end of the game you would fight a giant night where Princess Zelda was sleeping at the very beginning Castle. I used to fantasize about that as a kid
This is where I wish Nintendo was open-minded and let more people do this to their games.
how do i change the Keyboard controls? I dislike using the D-Pad on my controller.
Gorgeous!
This is an awesome set of improvements! I feel instead of Nintendo attacking and destroying awesome projects like this that they should be taking notes. OG Zelda fans LOVE this stuff, and no amount of lawsuits and C&D's are going to make them go away!
the problem is that the quality assurance just isn't there. old NES games were checked 1000 times over for bugs and programming mistakes. This game runs exactly like it should, like a fan game made on an amateur engine.
Audience of the fangames isn't actual nintendo audience. They target their stuff on 5-year old kids and just new generation in general and disrespect older fans. Blame yoshi island and its success I guess, but I think it's more complex problem.
It is so wild that this is technically the last Zelda game in the series
Its all fun and games until Nintendo sends a cease and desist email
So hurry and download now
…how long will this one last?
This looks pretty dope.
I love Zelda 2! This project looks extremely promising. Love all the new texture details. I hope they can get enough done before the big N shuts them down. :\
Oh, now this is totally cool and rad
Damn this looks really cool
You don't happen to have your playthrough available to watch, do you?
This game, even to this day, is criticized so harshly by some people. I personally love it. Everything to the perspective switch to the music, the rpg aspect with the quests and the leveling system. I don't get why it gets poopooed on so much, it's a wonderful game.
Back after it's release, people hated on it because it's too different from the first one, as well as more difficult. I was like that initially, but I played it more and eventually and it grew on me. My only complaint then was that it was too short and the second quest was just the first quest on easy mode.
Its just a game badly in need of a remake. It feels disjointed as if it's trying to figure out what it is. It makes it tough to stick with casually.
I was there when it was released and I can tell you nobody I knew hated the game, everybody loved it
@@donstarlancer thats not true at all, its a platforming zelda game. thats exactly what it is.
@@skyscrapersx5877 You must have been amongst of group of skilled gamers because everyone I knew that had an NES didn't like this game at all especially because of the difficulty. I didn't know anyone that had the skill or patience to complete the game like I did. They basically said the same thing about other games that were difficult or they couldn't beat (Rygar, TMNT 1, Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads, ect..)
I remember being 10 and playing this back when and I loved it. It was hard for me, I was a dumb kid who seemed to make everything so much harder for myself. Good memories.
It's not you. It's one of the hardest NES games, and NES in general is more challenging than other platforms to being with.
I enjoyed this game back when it was new but would have have a hard time finding the time for it now.
Why are so many caption boxes bugged? Doesn't look bad though...
ah I think that's my bad! I used a really old laptop for it and I think something's wrong with my graphics card as it was just one play through. I reset and it was all good.
if you lose all live at a castle you start at the castle, only on the last one now that I think on it.
I loved the Zelda 2 games when it first came out. Very interested in this pc update and will check it out. Hopefully they would do the same treatment to Castlevania 2, Simon's Quest. That would be awesome.
I do believe they have something like this for Simon's Quest that also includes a whole expanded end area that incorporates the original Castlevania. I haven't played it myself but hope to.
gonna play the original right now... would play PC version, but nostalgia just hit so hard, i gotta do this on the TV on the NES xD i'll do the PC version after..
Zelda 2 is underrated, I don't care what anyone says. It was very epic and ambitious. Sanding off a few of the hard edges that limit its accessibility really makes it shine.
I admired it as a kid but starting at the beginning every time you die made me quit EVERY time and I didn’t know how to save
👍 👍 👍 ⚔ 🧝♂️
Dude is insane for not embracing macOS and clicking a checkbox in GameMaker.
Loved this game. It needs a remake
from the thumbnail, I thought at first those were the game's graphics
That'd be amazing to get a Zelda game in the style of the manual art one day!
@@TieryasXu I wouldn't be surprised if someone makes one with the help of AI
I would love to play this before Nintendo shuts it down. A new spin on their classic games that still feels like the original. I would also gladly pay money for this if it was an official release and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
I'm really hesitant to play this version because of how wide the screen is. Why is it showing so much left and right, effectively making link's sprite super small
Play it if you haven't already, it's awesome. It looks totally fine when you play.
I don't know how this has escaped DMCA takedown this long. I hope it lives long and prospers
It's been getting a lot of attention lately, I imagine it'll be taken down soon. I actually have install files for this & the old Pokemon Uranium game (Which WAS taken down by Nintendo), which I never finished, but I remember being in awe about how much work went into it.
@@Scott93312 fortunately, there is still a community for AM2R. But who knows. It's days may be numbered.
So this can't be played on the real NES?
No
She lost her mirror in the graveyard next to erdrick's grave?
...that wouldn't be the Mirror of Ra by any chance, would it? 😂
Fuck anything that has to do with Kotaku.
Oh sorry, this video has nothing to do with Kotaku, but curious why you don't like Kotaku? I wrote several freelance articles for them, including the one about Zelda 2. I loved the game because I spent two years in Korea as a kid and it was one of the few NES games I could play and I loved how expansive the world felt. The editorial staff was wonderful and super supportive and I really enjoyed working with them. Playing this new remake reminded me of my first experience with Zelda 2 which is why I put it together. cheers.
@@TieryasXu gawker and s*** but you are right, it has nothing to do with Zelda 2.
@@TieryasXu Kotaku reeks of woke and the message, activist that have hurt gaming.
I want more RAYMAN ORIGINS level of remasters. Even from the BIG GUYS.
Could you imagine a 2D Zelda with both top down and side scrolling (somewhere between Zelda 2 and Links Awakening) but with the animation budget of Rayman legends?!
that thumbnail just looks nasty, guy
Is this official? What's Nintendo's stance on this?
Nintendo was sent a letter about this and the CEO himself took the time to meet the kid who programmed this and take him to jail.
Better enjoy it before Nintendo make it on a mission called C&D the sequel like the previous port 😢
Dude, its an illegal port. No other game company allows it, why should Nintendo?
@@JB-mm5ff this isn't gravity, this is a game they made and have available in various formats. You just don't want to pay for it.
@@JB-mm5ff so? End of the day its Nintendos intellectual property and you can't get it for free, nah!
Yeah yeah yeah. Playthroughs will still exist. I like to watch those
@@mrfivegold a wild nintendo bot appears!
I'm 1 minute into this video when I can already say that having the top half of the screen mostly be filled with empty space does not make it look better and having to collect three times as much shit does not make the game more fun
The screen has the same height as the original, it's just in widescreen now. A lot of the empty space in the original, like in the towns, has now been filled with updated backgrounds and sky elements that look much much better. There are a lot of visual updates sprinkled throughout the game that are really nice touches and they are everywhere. And you are missing the point about the "three times as much shit." There are a slew of QoL updates that make the game more accessible and encourage more exploration. There are a ton of new areas that have been added in (including two new continents), so that exploration is just about always rewarded, whether it's Pieces of Heart, Magic Containers, or one of the new pieces of equipment that have been included, because Link's arsenal has also been doubled with bunch of great new items. There may be three times the items to find, but they are also reasonably placed to be discovered. Honestly, this game is a vast improvement on the original.
As if this game needs more challenges.
I AM
ERROR.
The best Zelda 4 me until bref of the wilt that is😊
es hermoso
I can never beat the legend of Zelda 2 The adventure of Link because I keep on dying so often this is also the same for a link to the past
it reminds you of megaman because its from megaman lmao
Bruh i lvoed the NES version.
Was never a fan of the mini games.
Like it… but HARDER???? 😢 why the Megaman disappearing platforms… it is already hardest Zelda ever… i had the actual Cartridge and played it upon its release in the late 80s…
I appreciate the visuals… some areas overdone… seemed like Kid Icarus…. Most are masterfully redone…
But why harder!!??? If you play without save states…
As an adult I revisit some of these old NES games and give up in frustration, I don’t know how we tortured ourselves this much as kids
Once you save the fairy (later in game), falling off platforms won't result in instant death anymore, so the game get's pretty easy actually.
It's not harder. There are a bunch of QoL updates that actually take most of the frustration out of the game, leaving the actual challenge up to your skill. If you specifically mean the MegaMan blocks, they aren't that many, it's obvious when they are about to disappear, the next block is always reasonably placed, so it's like an easy version of the blocks. But there are great updates, like an item that eliminates instant death from pitfalls and the 1-Up dolls now PERMANENTLY increase your base life total. So if you find all four, you will now have 7 lives after a Game Over instead of 3.
why in the living hell did you review this game like it was polished
When I played it, it was polished, no issues whatsoever. What issues were you having, out of curiosity?
While impressive, it's not for me.
oh god this feels nothing like the original. I could tell immediately this was an old gamemaker engine with shit collisions, bad fades, horrible alarms, and bad gravity.
My opinion is probably not welcomed, but I've always looked at Zelda 2 as a decent Nintendo game. But for me personally It fails as a 'Zelda' game. I think the developers were aiming for a Mario style environment because of sales. The Christian crosses in the game made no sense, only proving the developers at the time didn't know what they were aiming for. I'm sorry for the rant. I'd love to see a remake that fixes a bunch of stuff.
Don't apologize! It's always great to hear everyone's opinions. Thanks for watching and commenting!
The Christian crosses were common in cemeteries and shields, etc. i think it's refreshing.
@@TieryasXu I understand. In oft the original version had a crescent moon on the mirror shield and blocks, then later removed. Also the catholic style temple of time church in the town. Why the developers wanted to mix real world religions into the game always confused people when it had nothing to do with the story. They just wanted the athstetics of it. I'm glad they ventured away from it.
@@davidm4566 Also the tri-force being a trinity symbol. I get it, but meh..
So it's even more annoying, with more busywork.
No, it's a great game. Intelligent QoL updates, tons of new areas of exploration, double the equipment you can obtain, a new Second Quest option. It's the definitive version in my opinion.
Thid upgrade sucks its plagued with poor level design which destroys the whole point of playing this....smh
Zelda 2 is literally the worst Zelda ever made.
This is literally the worst bait I’ve seen all day
Still better than OOT
Skyward Sword has that title. Bland. Boring. Pastel colored half ass Zelda game. IMO
Zelda 2, skyward sword, the shitty train one are all terrible Zelda games not really worth the titles name. Imagine seeing Zelda 2 as your first example of Zelda... you’d never even think about it again after it was turned off. SMH.
