Could a Zelda 2 remake, that uses BotW & Actraiser mechanics, turn the franchise's most hated game into a one of a kind, amazing game?

Zelda II is the Zelda game I most want to see remade. They'd also have to change the 100% requirement
It has so much potential! Even if it's not a Zelda franchise game, something in the same spirit but with modern quality of life features would be really unique!
At the same time, the team would have the trouble of remaking a faithful remake OR creating an entirely new remaster. I think this is why they've avoided remaking the first two games, and allowing BoTW be a re-imagining of Zelda 1 in modern day.
Perhaps a new Zelda could be that same re-imagining from Zelda II
@@prestonrcasey Don't make it faithful. Do like with Zero Mission; Metroid was kind of an awful game and they fixed almost everything. Never try to be faithful in a remake unless the game is unanimously viewed as perfect.
@@prestonrcasey In Zelda 2's case it would have pushed passed the faithfulness barrier. I had no problem with the game but I know many did. Improvements will seriously be needed for it to succeed.
@@firionkaiser8291 imo, i think zelda 2 would need less work than metroid 1 did for its remake. zelda 2 has a lot more redeeming qualities than the og metroid in my eyes
I’m not even particularly interested in the topic - but the quality is so good, from narration, animation, to just making a well-informed and reasonable argument. It’s really fun without being overloaded by jokes. A lot of new creators talk to just fill time - but this is well focused and paced. I can’t believe this channel only has three videos! It will definitely blow up someday.
They all take a long time to make. I'm considering some 100% tongue in cheek videos just to give myself a break from all the animation work.
Glad you're enjoying it!
@@FridayNightSleepover I was SUPER excited to see you have a new video out, and for its worth I can tell you as a viewer that the extra effort is definitely appreciated but also not expected. The presentation here is so polished and professional and effective at supporting the ideas and I love it, but honestly your videos would still be must-see viewing for me, even with significantly less effort put into the presentation. The *core* appeal for me is the strength of your ideas.
This is all to say: I'm definitely in favor of anything that makes your workflow more sustainable for you, because I want more!!!
Glad to hear you say that! There will be a lot of experimentation on the channel, but it'll all be for the better in the long run, stay tuned!
The fact that this beautifully constructed video is has been sitting at under 200 views for almost an entire month-when so much empty low-effort garbage content is recommended to me-makes me feel crazy. How much other great stuff out there is being swallowed up by the cruel machinery of algorithm that I can't even find?
Agreed. Just the intro took way more effort than I could imagine. Instant admiration!
Fun fact!
The reason you respawn in the last temple is because the famicom disk system version of the game was on two discs and the second disk was the last dungeon so it had to have it’s own spawn point, thus carried over in coding to the nes version
Was it 2 disks? I thought it was more of a 'Side A/Side B' situation.
@@Sebby_Nineteen you’re probably right haha
I always saw the over world map not as something interactive but a map to get from place to place. The enemy sprites just represents a enemy patrol that sometimes you can evade but mostly not.
Still my favorite Zelda game. Could use some improvements. But it’s also such a great feeling when you finally beat it.
Great video! Great work. Zelda 2 videos are always welcome
Thanks for the compliment! Glad you enjoyed it.
Feels great to beat for sure!
I think the towns felt good too, especially for the time. A game that improves on the Zelda 2 towns is Shovel Knight. It's not inundated with text to the point that I'm like, alright I don't need to hear your life story. But there's some hints of character there.
@@FridayNightSleepover one of the biggest downsides for me in the entire Zelda series is the lack of backstory and depth of story/characters. I think the world is ready for a more story based Zelda game
@CatPhil You must not have played a zelda game before or read a manual because you literally have no idea what you're talking about.
My first NES game was Zelda 1, and I was so excited when I discovered AoL. I actually loved it too. Your review was a breath of fresh air. Instead of complaining, you showed ways that it could be better. Genius! I hope it gets a remake one day!
Amazing video! The effects and snappy editing was very impressive, there was so much done in this video that I have no idea how you did it.
This also has some truly great ideas. Hopefully an indie dev of some sort takes this to heart and iterates on the Zelda II that you talked about in the latter half of the video that we never got.
I just stumbled across this video but wow the quality of it was amazing! I hope to see more videos from you in the future!
There's more coming that spans film animation and games! So glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video! Very satisfying to watch :)
Well done bro. Hope to see more content like like this in the future.
Great video, great analysis, great production quality. That being said, I did not notice an epilepsy warning in the actual video itself, and I think you really should have one!
Agreed. I don't know if CZcams let's you edit a message like that into an already uploaded video. But moving forward I will be cognisant of this!
This was a super well made video!
Thank you! If you know anyone who'll enjoy it, please share!
Wow I can tell that you put a lot of time into this video the quality is great
Thanks so much! It was a lot of fun.
Zelda II is such an underrated gem! Great video!
Thanks! Let me know if there is other having content you're interested in, since this channel is pretty eclectic.
Great video 👍 I recently played through Zelda 2 after avoiding it for 30 or so years. I used the online switch version with all the level ups and items right from the beginning.
I just wanted to check it out and not dedicate many hours of frustration which is what always turned me off from this game.
Great video you have here. I subbed you 👍
Maybe Nintendo will really take a chance and remake this game!
Thanks for the sub and compliment!
Ace presentation, mate!
Thank you! It took a long time. But I think this is my favorite video.
I think having the hammer within the second palace instead of Death Mountain would have helped a lot to give a better first impression of the game's difficulty. The hammer makes the travel time so much shorter if you're trying to beat Death Mountain. Of course the lives system would be better removed, but it's not *that* bad in many parts of the game when you have shortcuts available.
Ufff q buen video, solo falta una traducción al español, aunque si entendi lo que quiere decir pero aún asi muy buen videp
How on earth do you not have more subscribers? Really good video keep them coming - it's only a matter of time before this channel explodes.
I will never understand why anyone thought taking a hit resulting in losing exp in addition to health loss was a good idea. Especially since some exp draining enemies don't grant exp when defeated.
Well the mechanic _would_ work if the enemy stored your exp and dropped it back later, or if it was an armour or a spell that allows you to lose exp INSTEAD of health just like the satori armour does with rupees in TotK
@@stratonikisporcia8630 Perhaps but that isn't what happens here. In fact many of the enemies that drain exp don't even give any exp when defeated unless the RNG decides to make them drop an exp bag.
This game had a hero mode before it became a thing: Zero heart drops
A rupee system would be nice. That way Link could visit shops and buy Life, Magic potions, repel potion to either clear or reduce field enemies, and buy a few other items to assist him.
Your Chocobo (Epona) is an interesting idea for this game.
I'd still want the Link dolls and exp. pts vampire and instant death pits for at least Hard mode.
I think you have the right idea too!
Just more meat on the mechanics of the game, and some more fun combat. Maybe I'll do another video on the combat, but I don't know if many platformers that have interesting melee.
A few of the things you mentioned were addressed in a rom hack (Zelda ll redux). It has longer sword beams, spells cost less MP, exp draining foes are optional, Link dolls are retained in your life count, after game over you can continue from palaces, enemies drop magic jars/exp bags much quicker....
Perhaps, the remake could address combat by giving Link more sword attacks eg. Stun blade attack.
Maybe grant Link some items to use on the side scroll screens.
Good reference game may be Faxanadu on how to implement some additional items.
P.S. definitely another Zelda ll remake is always welcomed.
@@ogeidnomar4601 Right on. I show some of Redux at the end of the video actually, it's a very nice rom hack. I think there are future hacks that can go even further as you said!
Last time someone tried to make a side scrolling Zelda game, we got the CDI games. I'd be curious to see how you'd make those better.
Those are some great ideas to improve Zelda 2. This game is prime for a remake.
Great video. I want to see more of your content.
There's more coming! Though not all are about games.
OMG, I wish I could play this hypothetical Zelda 2 Remake. Just like Actraiser: Renaissance which I personally adore. Your ideas are amazing!
So glad you enjoyed it! Makes it worth while!
What a great video, on one of my favourite games
Thanks so much for the compliment!
@@FridayNightSleepover you're very welcome! You inspired me with this video to try and see if i can make an opensource fan game implementing these idea's
Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link re-imagined as AlttP style gameplay and graphics would be awesome. People have attempted to re-create it like that but no one has been successful. I think once the data sets are there then more generators will be made and continue to improve as there is more data to be input to ESRGAN.
I've beaten this game more than I can count on NES, virtual console and Switch. I love this game! But it's really gonna be hard to play on the upcoming LoZ game and watch system. The buttons are so damn tiny😂!! I have the Mario game and watch and I can speed run through super mario Bros but on the game and watch system, I mess up a lot because the tiny buttons. Still psyched for Zelda game and watch to come out. Glad you made a vid on Zelda 2. It's highly underrated imo and deserves some love!
Don't be afraid to try out one of the ROM hacks too! They really help balance the difficulty and add some quality of life features. Zelda 2 is one of those games that's just really ripe for ROM hacking.
@@FridayNightSleepover I definitely will once I get around to building a new PC for myself. I don't mind the difficulty because that's what kinda makes this game famous...well, "infamous" I guess I should say. But I sure would love to do all kinds of cool stuff that you can't without ROM hacks, emulators, mods and stuff. It'll be like the good old Game Genie days all over again but cooler because of what is possible.
Yeah, man. Fantastic editing, seriously. I know I'm not the first to say it, but that was highly entertaining.
Thank you!
That's great to hear! There's more eclectic entertainment on the way, just takes a while to produce. But these comments are very motivating!
Played that game on the wind waker demo disk that had all the older games back then. Always felt like a chore playing because of the difficulty. But it was cool finding out shadow link was the final boss and I liked the magic and leveling system in a way.
That's the great thing about rom hacks and remakes, sometimes they can keep the best and leave the rest!
Thanks for watching!
Just because I feel you misrepresented the game a little bit: Only *specific* enemies will drain your XP. Similar to how some enemies will drain your magic meter on contact.
very cool thoughts on what might cause people to have problems with the game. and how the game might be built upon. But as much as I want to play most if not all of the zelda games, I don't particularly care to play zelda 2
also, the flashing red and green screen on link's death, a few times in the first half of the video, really hurt my eyes. I don't know if it was possible to cut those bits out or edit the death screen.
Sorry about the flashes. That's straight gameplay they subject the player to, so you definitely wouldn't enjoy playing Zelda 2, because dying often is inevitable. Maybe there is a rom hack that tones it down a bit.
Considering Zelda 2 got imported to PC? You CAN actual apply those ideas if you want to bother with figuring out the code in order to modify it.
BTW as a kid, Zelda II was one of my favorite NES games. I used to rent it a lot at Blockbuster. I eventually owned the game. I could always get to the final boss but could never beat it until I found out you could duck in a corner and stab. (The issue to me lot of times was the boss before Shadow Link which ate up your magic and health and the endurance of just getting to the boss).
For me its just getting to the last palace. That gauntlet of rocks thrown from fences!
There was noting wrong with this game in fact it was one of the best games on the NES, I loved it.
Now I'm imaging a Zelda 2 reimagined remake where the overworld is the 2D BOTW prototype and the side scrolling is Link with his Smash Bros moveset, and that would legitimately by soooo amazing, omfg!!!! That NEEDS to happen!!!!!
I wasn't aware of this "controversy". That's just how games were back then. Kids these days. But, especially now that I'm old, I really don't appreciate when a game is disrespectful of my time. I agree in theory that failure should have consequences, but when the consequence is: I have to spend an unreasonable amount of time just to get back to where I was, in way that doesn't make the game more fun or interesting or even challenging, just more time-consuming... At that point I'm like: WTF. Just...come on, man.
That's an argument about Zelda 2 I don't agree with. It takes 2-5 minutes at best to get to where you need to go from the beginning. I think it's just a mental roadblock for some people. It took me 4 minutes to get from hyrule castle to the great palace and after I entered the great palace I didn't have to do it again. It takes less time to get to anywhere else on the map.
even games can disrespect ppl now.... lol@@EmilyRose900
It only gets more and more frustrating every time I get a game over. This game doesn’t give me even a hint of joy once when I played it, I even gave up on it once I reached the 2nd palace. This is a game has annoying mechanics, unfair enemies, insufferable backtracking, and requirements that you can only find if you read Nintendo Power. Cobble that together and you have one of the most unbearable games I’ve ever played. It is that insufferable.
I hadn't considered the emptiness of the overworld.
That's a good point.
An additional statement, i'd LOVE a new zelda rpg. Where you still habe puzzles and dungeons but all enemy encounters are RPG battles. Have it be a sequal or game post zelda 2 where Link has to re-discover allcthe sages and the sages are your party members, and Zelda will be your spirit guide similar to spirit tracks so she can ba a voice and link can have silent dialogue choices. The sages can be findable party members like persona or mass effect or dragon age and they all have a special puzzle function that they offer at any time, in party or not. And the whole game is gathering the sages of each of the races (gerudo, rito, goron, zora, shiekah, korok) but also 3 more (deku, yeti, yiga) which are specifically rival races to the other races but also offer more narrative and type coverage to battles. Each sage can have a base ability but also a new ability once they finish their related dungeon with link. The battles can be like classic final fantasy fights. The dungeons can be classic zelda affairs like alttp, and again, fights can just pop up whenever. There can be town quests that'll require venturing into the world and the sages/companions.
Idk just seems like it would be a FANTASTIC shake up and growth to the zelda 2 style and be a great venture for zelda.
People don't appreciate Zelda II, which is kinda fair given the difficulty, but there's so much of it in Ocarina of Time. One of Link's pained animations where he clutches his side and bounces back on one foot is straight from Zelda II. Dark Link, Volvagia, and even Phantom Ganon were either in Zelda II straight out or at least directly inspired by a boss in it. The towns bearing the names of various sages. The list goes on!
That's really true.
Zelda 2 has a lot of world building ideas that were repurposed in future Zelda games, but mechanics were not.
BotW helped revitalize the series, but I think they could take some great ideas in Zelda 2, add some quality of life, and again push the boundaries of the IP.
Phantom Ganon? Explain.
@@Sebby_Nineteen There's a boss in Zelda II called Rebonack that is fought on horseback. Once you deal enough damage, he ditches the horse and you fight him one on one. Phantom Ganon is fought in a similar fashion, only his gameplay is expanded to take advantage of the 3D environment plus he is fought as a tennis boss once he loses his horse. I'm not saying they're exactly the same but I can see the roots of Phantom Ganon's fight.
This video is soo good, amazing editing skills too, you deserve a LOT of views, count on me to share your content man, your channel become instantly one of my favorites!!
Thank you for the kind praise! There are plenty more coming. Sharing these is always appreciated of course!
These are all excellent ideas, I would absolutely love to play this version of Zelda 2
Me too! Maybe a talented aspiring game dev will do it.
Heyo, very nice to see you back with another great video!
I'm so glad I subscribed even though I feared this channel might already be dead XD
Not dead! This one has a lot of unique mock-game animation that took time!
@@FridayNightSleepover The extra time was definitely worth it; the production was fantastic. This video was an incredibly pleasant surprise today
Thanks so much! I know it's niche, this one probably won't do so well, but I wanted to go in depth into something I love, and try to makes it polished and challenge my skills.
@@FridayNightSleepover It definitely showed how much work you put into it, those mock-ups fit in very nicely.
Aside from that your analysis of the games shortcomings and proposed solutions were on point!
First, I have to say that the edition of this video is excellent and immersive!
I don't consider myself a Zelda hardcore fan, but *Zelda 2 - The Adventure of Link* is one of my favorite games of all times. I got to say that it doesn't feel "incomplete", it's just the way it was meant to be, but for many, we want more! It not only deserves a Remake preserving the WorldView / SideView interaction, but as you stated, many more features and make it, practically, in an Open World game like Skyrim for example.
I also don't think it needs to lower the difficulty. I've enjoyed hardtype hacks like The Nightmare of Ganon, but we need more features. That would make it perfect, the dream game! Once I even planned to make a game heavily inspired in Z2tAoL using Unity, but the copyright infringement would suck.
You said it all!
Thank you for the compliment too!
This is not only a outstanding edited video but you really do a good job explaining why the game feels so frustrating and unfairly difficult.
If only it were a little more reasonable. Maybe Nintendo will stop ignoring this game and someday remake it.
Until then, we have our rom hack friends to make it palatable! Some people in the comments also recommend Phoenotopia as a spiritual successor.
@@FridayNightSleepover any chance you could show what software you used to make all the cool video effects?
@@Knightmessenger Sure! For better or worse, it's the same thing most people use. It's entirely Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects.
@@FridayNightSleepover i know those are powerful but man, i just find adobe software tedious, unintuitive and unable to speed up/shortcut/increase efficiency.
@@Knightmessenger There are alternatives i have not explored, but try them out and see what works for you. I used them because I had access to them, not because they offered anything unique. But i always start with a sketchbook and let ideas that don't excite me fall by the wayside.
any links to the Romhacks ?
Phoenotopia is a really good game built on the same game mechanic template as Zelda II, I'd recommend it highly for anybody who likes Zelda II.
Wow, never seen this game! Looks great! Thank you!
I'd also recommend Super Chibi Knight, which is very explicitly inspired by Zelda 2
@@TCMcBiscuits Another great suggestion! Thank you
In the JP/Famicom version, you actually lose your acquired levels after getting a gameover. Now granted you do level up a lot quicker in this version too. You can hit level 8 by the end of the first palace.
Brutal!
Zelda II is one of my favorite games of all time. I never worried about the difficulties as a kid since most NES games were difficult at the time. I would just grind and level up to make the game easier and beat the palace without dropping the crystal to get extra lives. Thanks for the awesome video and trip down memory lane.
It can be difficult to revisit, even I felt like it could be mean spirited at times. But if you do revisit, you'll end up loving it more and want a successor that takes what works and leaves behind what doesn't.
There's so many hacks of the game that make it more friendly too.
Just a gentle critique - I was really interested in watching this video but I am very photosensitive. In the future, would you please consider censoring the flashing effects that originate from the Zelda 2 death screen? Or at the very least, give a flash warning at the beginning of the video, and time stamps for when they will be. Unfortunately I can't finish the video because of the flashing effects showing up multiple times without warning. Otherwise, I'm interested to see your future videos!
I think I'll do that next time!
I didnt see other videos warn about it and i figured this video is so niche only ppl who played the game and already saw the flash would watch.
But you're not the only person to say this, so I'll do that next time. I dont really know the threshold for what's considered photosensitive too, so I'll have to research that. If you know any good resources throw it in the comments! I'll go ahead and put a pinned comment with timestamps.
Thanks for the comment!
That's it.
I need you to make this game NOW 😭😭😭
Fun ideas. What about ideas for the side scrolling sections?
Maybe that's for a part 2! Some day.
8:30 Wow ! I didn't know Jon Snow was in Zelda II.
Link: "why does everyone keep saying that?"
@@FridayNightSleepover You know nothing FNS !
I think the unofficial remake of Zelda 2 (not a romhack) that was released last year for PC is the best we'll ever get. It was really good and just improved on the base game and added alot of content and new features while also somewhat improving the graphics.
But an official remake by Nintendo would also be nice, I like Zelda 2 so the more the better.
Now that Hoverbat's remake has been out for months, will you be revisiting this topic, possibly comparing it to what they did and more ideas on what could be done?
You mean I have to beat an even more difficult Zelda II?! (I kid)
@@FridayNightSleepover No, really. Play the remake. You'll be surprised by what has changed within it.
“Or give it a fate worse than death and send it back to the beginning” I laughed sooooo hard at this line!
Zelda 1 and 2 both have redux mods that take aspects from modern titles and make them both much more replayable and i'd say they are downright mandatory to experience these games in their best possible way
Honestly, dying in Zelda 1 in the later parts is almost just as punishing. Starting with a mere 3 hearts, having to backtrack to a fairy fountain, AND shoving out another 68 rupees for a new potion, not to mention 100-160 rupees down the drain for lightly tapping a Like Like, which are almost always in rooks filled with Bubbles that will keep you from being abke to defend yourself. Plus, the game can be really unfair in getting you hit with things that aren't really your fault to begin with. When you have 8 darknuts and several cannons in one room, the frame rate tweaks around like crazy and it's hard to respond to anything with correct timing. I think people just didn't notice these other ways Zelda 1 is punishing because they aren't as conventional as Zelda 2's.
I had years ago, a game idea that have the 2 kinds of wiev game
Would be great with a remake or sequel in the same fashion by Nintendo. Zelda 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, I always find myself going back to it.
If you want an actual good game based on (the good parts of) Zelda II’s formula check out Phoenotopia Awakening
If we're talking improvements there are plenty to make.
1) Removing lives one, there's no point to them except punish the player and is the equivalent of extending playtime. If they wanted to extend playtime then they should've added more things to do, if not leave the game alone to be enjoyed, it's better if it's remembered as a good and fun game than an unforgiving parent.
2) This is exclusive to the NES version: enemies that can only be harmed with the fire spell.. no. Just no. I hated entering combat in the second continent because there were plenty of times where I ran out of magic and was ambushed by tektikes and those annoying flying things.
3) Shield mechanic is wonky. I tried to see if lizards and iron knuckles were keeping track of the down button and mess with them but to no avail. Not to mention they can be overcome by jumping and attacking at the right time, which doesn''t feel intentional. It feels like Nintendo intended for you to strategize the most adequate time to strike or to defend.
4) Vanish Blue Iron Knuckles to the dark world.
5) Have enemies drop health ailing ítems. They already drop potions so I don't see why they can't drop hearts. This is also a problem as I will state next.
6) It is incredibly irritating to be farming experience points only to have the enemy which is, a) harder to kill, b) rewards the most exp, c) is an overall annoyance or d) all of the above, only to drop a blue potion an no exp points with the magic meter full. I see no reason why both exp and recovering ítems shouldn't be rewarded simultaneously.
There's more that could be done with this game to make it better, but these 6 things are the minimum to make it fun imho.
Still I recognize I may not be giving this game enough credit. While it does have bullshit design choices I still feel great whenever I conquer a palace, level up, or get a new spell. It gives me more to experiment and makes me feel like I'm growing stronger. It's just that the feeling isn't as potent as with Zelda 1, which is a shame because I think this playstyle had the most potential out of both of the two.
I have always thought that Zelda II would have been adored by fans if it were the start of a new, original IP. As a thought experiment, I've imagined it not as Zelda II, but as Kid Icarus II, and all of a sudden the mechanics just seem to fit. It was a good game, it just wasn't a good ZELDA game. That being said, your recommendations for fixing it are interesting.
Gamers just need to put on their “big boy pants” and defeat it how the game was originally intended.
Both Z1 and Z2 should have a remake just as Links awakening got
I would love to play your proposed version of zelda 2. This game gets undeserved hate anymore. As guy who got zelda 2 when it was new back in the day, all this hate came way later. To paraphrase you, after decades of improvements in technology its not fair to judge zelda 2 by those standards. At the time, this was literally the only other zelda game, there were no precedence in the series and everybody liked this game just fine. Even my mother played the fuck out of this game back then (in her 20s at the time, but most adults didnt play video games). The first time i heard of this being judged so harshly and a "blacksheep" of the series was about 20 years after its release with everybody then unconsciously piggybacking on the idea simply because its popular to not like this game. Ultimately i conclude that any person should play a game for themselves and not rely on "popular opinions" that aren't their own.
i wanna play the game you made
Hopefully someone will go make it now! That's really the whole point of the video, to inspire some new ideas, because it's such a unique game, let alone a unique Zelda game.
My Game 🤲💛
Someone needs to remake this game the same way they made links awakening. Except make it a retelling: as though the game starts with a child in bed listening to his grandmother. And the grandmothers story sends the boy into a dream that becomes this remade game with all the improvements for game play.
I finally beat this game only because I was using the virtual boy. Where you can save the frame and go back to it when you die straight away.........its the only way lol
Try a rom hack that makes the difficulty more reasonable! You might enjoy it more.
Links awakening was remastered because of how underrated it was, and it sold really well. I think Zelda 2 is super underrated and can be heavily modified and updated to help fit it within today’s standards
Link's Awakening was absolutely not underrated, it was always most people's favourite 2D games along ALttP, the latter getting a sequel (ALBW)
i think most people don't have a problem with games being "hard", but rather having to redo 1h of boring backtrack to reach the point they died. That's mostly why games like Souls and NES games remain niche. Playing Adventure of Link with save states is way more fun and manageable for today's standard even though the "physical difficulty" remains the same. I think the "difficulty problem" is not a skill problem, but rather a patience problem.
When i was a kid i didn't mind replaying the same 2 levels of a game over and over again, because, i had only one unfinished game at a time. Now though, i have hundreds of unfinished games backlogging around and dozens i still haven't even tried out, which remains sealed, collecting dust.
So many games, so little time. Isn't that the truth!
I really think that Zelda 1 and 2 should get the Metroid Zero Mission Treatment, where they give it new graphics, some new mechanics, better storytelling and guidance, and just better gameplay.
Totally! Or maybe some indie dev can make a spiritual successor.
Thanks for watching!
Fun fact
The zelda 2 mainland map is essentially the same as the botw map
If not just extremely simillar
My favourite Zelda game.
All they needed to have was "monsters drop health". That was IT.
AWESOME video! I've always, always felt like this game was incomplete in some capacity, and I think you truly nailed it regarding "player agency" on the field/world map. I never, ever thought about the possibility of having more agency on the world map regarding enemies; imagine if you COULD attack them from behind or with a weapon on the field! What a difference that would make. The short sword attack damage box (only one block) and the weak laser distance (only four blocks) really hold the combat back from being superb. It's definitely good, but it could have been SO much better!
I also did my own analysis of Zelda II for our series The Good, The Bad & The Buggy: czcams.com/video/wtXyi5j41A0/video.html
Nintendo, hire this man!
Heh. "Weenie sword"
Zelda 2 is the best one in the series... it totally deserves some of the advancements you talk about here.
Zelda 2 - the first souls like game ^^
How have I not heard of Celeste before now...?
Welp, there goes your weekend! Have fun!
Dident like it as a kid but as a 41 year old gamer I love it
I think they should just remake this game using the Smash Bros engine
If they remake Zelda 2, we'll know Nintendo has really gotten brave!
Lmao why the smash brothers engine?
@@MrHomelessHobos Cuz it’s a satisfying 2d side scroller
I would like to see HD2D graphics
Nice to know that to make the game more interesting and realistic, Nintendo made it so that if you have epilepsy and you die in the game, you die in real life too! Thanks Nintendo!
I will probably never play this game again! I tried to give it another go a couple years ago. DONE!
Just play Amidas Curse. Excellent ROMHack
It’s just trendy to hate certain things, most people that hate it aren’t old enough to have actually played it, but because their loud obnoxious grandpa aged brother likes to yell at the clouds the younger generation goes along to get along.
Zelda 2 is the first (or one of the first) Souls-like games. Changing it into an Actraiser clone misses the point. The overworld is fine. It does its job and a long walk back is the price you pay for failure. Long walks back are a staple of the souls-like genre. What it really needs (if anything) are more tools to vary the gameplay and allow experimentation in your play style.
That's a really great insight! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Nintendo needs to hire you
The best zelda game imho. It wasn't hard if you're not a scrub.
All I took away from this video was "waah game hard make it easy like other zelda games"
Sorry you didn't enjoy the video Jenson! There are some excellent rom hacks that make the game even harder on romhacking.net, check them out if you haven't already!
I'm actually with you, I adore this game, and games don't have to be easy! I thought it'd be fun to wonder about an update to Zelda 2 that has some quality of life improvements while keeping the difficulty. I'll make that more clear next time. Thanks so much for watching!
There should be a law that says every boy needs to play the better NES games
Dark Souls of the 1980s
Dragon's Lair: "hold my beer"
Zelda 2 Remake
Hey, I know this is a year old and your content has probably improved since this video, but the inclusion of the flashing deaths makes this video unwatchable for me. I don't have a serious condition but it just hurts to look at, and the solution in the pinned comment is honestly kind of a copout. It's a real shame because I can tell you put a lot of effort into many assets in the video, for example the intro. Some gaps between speaking was a bit too long and I felt you overexplained why zelda 2 is more punishing than zelda 1, but that would be fine for me. I hope you improve and/or have improved since this video because it's clear that you put in a lot of effort into this video!
Thanks for the feedback! I know it's easy to miss because I had to do it after upload when it was brought to my attention, but there's a pinned comment about where to flashes are. Because the flashes are part if the original game it was easy to overlook, sorry about that.
I don't rewatch old videos much, too cringe for me, but for the explaining part, I do like to create a foundation of ideas for folks who maybe never even touched an NES before, which might be too much for folks who kinda already get it, in a similar manner to making all parts of the video watchable for all people. But rest assured that all the videos go through at least 6 rewrites, and I hope the channel is gets more informative and funnier to provide value for everyone who took the time.
So, thank YOU very much, for taking the time!
I take offense to the notion that botw has anything to teach a great game like Zelda Ii.
😆 I totally get it!
This game doesn't need to be like botw, because it's already a better zelda game than it. A redux patch already improves on it.
G.a.l.
