That’s a good button hole. I have two modern Janome machines that do automatic button holes the same way but the results are terrible. I prefer to do it semi manually using my Bernina from 1988.

This was a Janome but we use a Bernina in the studio. It definitely a must have when purchasing new machines these days.

@@StyleArcSewingPatterns My Janome makes good buttonholes on the first side and terrible on the return trip forward. Why is that? Is there anything I can do about it?

@@RobertaWarshaw sounds like a good question for Janome. It really should perform well in both directions. Make sure you have a nice sharp needle and good thread. I use guterman.

looks great til you have an actual button band with layers of seam allowance interfering with the foot. how to compensate for that?

Did you know that when you push your presser foot lever when it is already raised... that it raises even higher? That works for me.

If you are working with denim we recommend using a hammer on thick seams, changing to a jean/denim needle and using a denim thread.
We can film it next time we make a sample to show you.
