I almost lost my mind making this | Backgammon board

- In today's video, I show you how to make a wooden Backgammon board. I used maple hardwood and laminated maple plywood for this project. To add retro, colorful accents to the build, I added leather inlays to each of the game pieces, along with accented leather drawer bottoms to store them. The game board design is screen printed onto the maple veneer for a bespoke look. And the techniques I used here can also be applied to checkers or chess boards. This project is perfect for board game enthusiasts and will most definitely level up your game night.

Plane. And finally a real woodworker uploads some craftsmanship. I’m so tired of seeing these “woodworkers” who only do “top 5” tool reviews and have all these tik tok style gimmicky channels. But those same people don’t own a single hand tool or know how to cut basic joinery and claim to be woodworkers. Dudes are hiding behind plywood, pocket holes and wood filler just chasing clicks. You deserve 1000x more subs than those jabronis.
Thank you man! Yeah, I'm with you. I see a lot of videos about how to use this or that tool, but those guys never build a thing. I prefer to craft something sweet and let the work speak for itself. I appreciate the support!
@@TimberBiscuitWoodworks I couldn’t agree more. Anyone who puts a Temu affiliate link in their description shows me they don’t care about the craft at all, only money and clicks.
haha!
Plane - Your craftsmanship continues to leave me in awe. And as I have said many times, your channel deserves so many more subscribes. It was great to see you work through some issues with this project and I think it turned out amazing buddy! And yes plans please.
Thank you so much 😀
Plane and card scraper is far more satisfying than sandpaper. It's also less dusty.
I couldn't agree more.
Planes. Yeah dude! I love how thought out this project is. You really knocked it out of the park all around with this project. I would love to build a game board like this one day…
Thank you! And you should, it was a ton of fun.
I have to admit, as an artist and huge fan of Daido Moriyama, I wasn't prepared for the screenprinting.
Plane and sandpaper camp here.
Yeah I think there’s room for a lot of other mediums within woodworking. It was fun to break from the traditional stuff.
Great to see a nice smaller project that doesn’t require whole lot of wood as those tend to get quite expensive if trying to do something similar ourselves. Not to say those videos aren’t nice but good to see smaller precision work as well
Totally hear ya! This one got real intricate.
Yoooooo Shane!!! The colors Man... the colors!!! They really pop Bud. Had NO idea what was going on most of the video but, I knew something freakin awesome was being made. Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!
Haha! Yeah man, I think the color scheme works wonderfully. Thanks for hanging in there haha, I try to make it worth your while. Cheers!
It’s absolutely stunning! I love the introduction of leather, something not common enough and certainly with vibrant neon stained leather! I’ve only seen glimpses of screen printing but have no understanding of it. It looks stunning on your board so I’m interested in knowing more and future projects that include this concept… and with the neon leather
Thank you so much! Yeah I really enjoyed adding some color and personality to this piece, I rarely get an opportunity to work that into projects for one reason or another. I’ll definitely be utilizing more screen printing after the success of this project, and cover it in more detail in the future as well.
@@TimberBiscuitWoodworks awesome! Looking forward to it
Sandpaper, I’m no good with planes. Another killer project dude! Thanks for sharing your work, it’s so inspiring. Your jokes are pretty good too. 😂
Haha, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Planes-although my technique with them is so poor that I many times have to resort to sanding.
First backgammon board I see in such colours. Very snazzy.
Haha, that happens to the best of us. I appreciate it! I wanted to match the lighting I did for the bent lamination.
Now you just need to make dice cups, nice board.
Thanks! That’s definitely on the to do list.
Absolutley amazing! The details in this build, the materials and colours!
I rarely use my planes, but definatly would if I would build something in this size.
Your knowledge really impress! So many areas that you master, all from woodworking to colour printing and more!
Yeah, a sharp hand plane is perfect for crisp edges on smaller pieces. Thank you very much! This project was quite challenging, it definitely took me out of my comfort zone.
@@TimberBiscuitWoodworks And you did an amazing job! 🙂
Thanks man!
Plane, sandpaper and card scraper; any or all, to preference.
Nice!
Plane - Nice build. First time I've seen some use screen printing on wood. You should burnish the edges of the drawer pulls though.
I appreciate it, that was a first for me too. And good call!
Sandpaper. Maybe I’m a lesser woodworker, but sandpaper 90% of the time. Absolutely loved the build, dad jokes and techniques not sure about the title.
I think it’s more of a personal preference. And thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing work!
Thank you, cheers!
Plane but in all honesty: sandpaper!
Love the color scheme on the game board!
Sanding can be so meditative too haha. Thank you!
Sandpaper unfortunately I don’t have a decent block plane. Great work as usual!!
Thanks mate!
Sandpaper. A plane would probably be better, but I have not mastered that technique yet. Love the color scheme you chose- it gives your board a cool retro, yet classic, vibe. Well done.
It does take a bit of practice, and maybe a few dozen mistakes.. Thanks, I was aiming for the more retro style so I'm happy it hit the mark!
Sandpaper…. Spent all my money on power tools and sandpaper lol, I would like to get a set of chisels and some planes just need more $$$$$$MONEY$$$$$$ lol great job on this project.
Haha! Yeah, you just need to go one at a time. Thank you!
Sandpaper because I'm cheap and still need to master a plane.
Woodworking, dad jokes, AND screen printing all in one video! What more can anyone ask for?
That board turned out looking great, Shane 👌 I feel the colour scheme gives it a bit of a retro vibe which I am all for.
Haha yeah buddy, it's the hat trick! Thanks so much, I'm really into the retro look as well. I think it complements a game like Backgammon.
@@TimberBiscuitWoodworks definitely! Do you have any other game boards you intend on making in the future?
I'd love to explore more game boards in the future. It's hard to say though because for whatever reason, this video isn't starting off like I had expected. For whatever reason CZcams isn't pushing it out so I don't know if there is much interest.
@@TimberBiscuitWoodworks there's nothing wrong with the video, so it might just be bad click through rate and hence the algorithm isn't pushing it to more people. I understand video performance sort of dictates future projects, which I fully support (do what works).
Have you done A-B testing on this video?
I'm thinking that even though the thumbnail and title are both well done and caught my attention, it could maybe be more catching? For instance, the title could be something like "I almost RUINED this game board" or "game night will NEVER be the same again"
Then again... I wouldn't listen to me because I don't have a channel of my own 😂
Haha, hey I appreciate the input! I actually have tested a few different thumbnails as well as titles with this video already. But this one’s just unusual. I have unfortunately spent more time than I care to admit learning analytics in my advertising career but this video is an anomaly. By all metrics it should be doing much better. Anyway, hopefully it picks up and we get to explore battleship in the future haha!
Great project! Thanks!
I appreciate it, thanks for watching!
Sandpaper and plane. Depends on the project and parts honestly. Awesome build once again! Was excited to see your name pop up with an upload today! Keep up the good work!
True! Thank you and do!
I would really like to be able to get plans for this gameboard. It looks great!
Sweet! If I end up making them, I'll let you know!
Sanding but would love to learn more about hand planes. Amazing work as always true craftsman and artist. Keep up the amazing work
I'll keep that in mind! And, you got it!
Great video and build as always Shane
I appreciate it man, thank you!
among all aspects that you excel in, i admire your order of operation 👍👍
Thanks man! I feel like that is one of the most important keys to success with woodworking.
Plane. I love the shavings 🤦🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
They are so satisfying!
Awesome build.
Thanks you! Glad you liked it.
Great build my friend. Interesting timing also. I was just asked if I could make a game board. Different game, but none the less. Cheers.
Thank you! Heck yeah, this was a fun one!
nice work
Thank you! Cheers!
Sandpaper, can't afford the planes and sharpening stones. Sandpaper is fairly inexpensive.
I'm not sure I would have gone with those colors but it looks great.
Yeah, you gotta just go one plane at a time. And yeah, color choices are so subjective, but I’m glad you appreciate the overall design. That’s a win.
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks Plane and sanding...depends on the project.
Thanks for the lesson and the humour! "Reluctant potato...bahaha ".
I have an antique poker table I need to restore. I want to add a backgammon and checkerboard inlay. I'll be slicing up a wooden dowel for the game pieces.
Haha, thanks for watching! And Awesome! That sounds like a fun project
@@TimberBiscuitWoodworks I just found you today but rest assured I'll be back
Welcome to the channel!
Planes, but to be fair; I sometimes use sandpaper. Especially if it’s on ply edges. Or I should say, cheaper ply edges.
On another note; where do you purchase the “maker coins” that you inlay?
Thanks for the content!
Great points! I got them from a company called medallion maker branding. They do solid work. Thank you for watching!
really stunning work I'm a backgammon fan but not a woodworker, is it possible to buy plans for this one?
Thank you! Unfortunately I didn’t get enough people requesting plans for this project to make them. But if that changes in the future I will be sure to let you know.
Sandpaper. This 212 degree corner is making my blood boil!
Haha, simmer down now
Plane or sandpaper. Doesn't really matter to me. I use sandpaper more but I want to use the best tool for the job. Be safe, keep making, and stay awesome.
Can’t argue with that reasoning, cheers!
Plain sandpaper...
Sandpaper plane...
I dig it!
@@TimberBiscuitWoodworks hehe
Sanding - I'd love to start using planes but I'm not sure how to jump in. Any recommendations for the first plane I should buy? I was looking at the Taytools block planes but not sure if that's a good place to start. Love your channel, keep up the great work!!!
A good block plane is the perfect place to start. Once you get confidence there, you'll be on your way. Thanks for the support!
I didn't hear how to enter to win the board. Did I miss it? I live off grid, a game board would be awesome!
Sweet! There’s a link in the description and pinned comment. Good luck!
plans please
It's getting close, I'll reply again here and let you know if I end up making them.
Sandpaper, I don't own a plane....yet
No time like the present :)
Это же нарды 😄
indeed!
Plane if possible
Without a doubt!
A cup for the die?
I mean that’s more for cheating prevention than a necessity, so I didn’t really consider it for this one.
Nice build. Not sure what the $7000 click-bait is all about.
Thanks!
Planes wherever I can and sandpaper for funky stuff.
I’d love to see the plans, a Backgammon board has been on my make list for a long time (and then I need to learn how to play)
Also, where do you get those brass medallions made? I have been trying to source some without much luck.
Love your channel and the unique style you bring - always look forward to the little “interplays” you have with the camera. Great work
Right on! I got the brass inlays from a company called medallion maker branding. And I really appreciate it, I love having fun with the shot selection and I’m glad you enjoy it too! Cheers!
