This is not Neon levels of difficulty but those verse lines in the guitar are hard to do when singing. His singing and playing perfectly is the fruits of hours and hours of practice.

Still not convinced that the world really understands how difficult this really is. Acoustic, solo, it’s got all of the things to make this incredibly difficult.
This one human being I’ve never met, has saved me emotionally countless times, it may sound crazy he’s the only singer I listen to. I do listen to a lot of acoustic guitar blues no vocals. I just connect with John’s vocals more than anyone else. And I’m old enough to know now I don’t need to bother to keep looking for a new artist for connection I just hope John outlives me so I don’t have to live in a world without him , or my dad my dad is the best human being on the planet, but he can’t sing LOL.

His singing is terrible but very emotive, and his guitar work is on another level. But the singing isn’t his fault cause he got a vocal granuloma which gave him like a tumor which led to surgery that altered his voice.

This is a fantastic song and I’m enthralled at how well he manages to play and sing this live whilst not missing a note. JM does have more ability than many guitarists to use his thumb on the bass notes - his live solo version of Neon is mind blowing, absolutely sensational. I got into JM only a few years ago and he really is the gift that keeps on giving - the more I hear and see the more mesmerised I am. And I saw someone comment that he had saved them emotionally - I concur with that, big time. Many times I’ve sought solace in his songs and he has lifted my spirits

There was a short time just when his first music started coming out where we all thought this guy was gonna be another hit and run musician that didn't stick around to prove they were great. We all thought he was just pandering to the ladies and all that jazz. Then he just kept coming with more music. THEN the man played at the Nokia stage and absolutely BLEW all of our minds. Damn this guy is good.

The song that makes you feel good
That was very pitchy and he didn't play it well (and he knew it) but he just keeps plugging along with a confidence that comes with years of doing this. As a musician who does a lot of John Mayer (including this song), that's what I admire about him. He doesn't get stressed when he misses a note or sings off key, he's just kind of jamming like he's in his bedroom. He does this a lot in huge concerts too. The balls on this guy to try new vocal runs on the fly like that. He's constantly. experimenting. I try to do that live but lose my way, so I stick to the melody to avoid embarrassment. You might think I'm knocking him but I'm actually praising his sense of trying new stuff while in front of an audience. Most muso's, including myself, don't risk that. I think that speaks to his talent. If you listen to a lot of his playing, he's always trying to go somewhere new. Both vocally and instrumentally. But his albums are on point and genius in melody.
I play and sing this song and I think the hardest part of it is the guitar transitions from chorus to verse and hitting all of the notes within the verse.
It sounded like he didn’t miss a note and had a smooth transition. How do you think he played it poorly?

Does anybody know why John plays the main riff with all downstrokes? It just seems to me like it would be much easier to play while still sounding the same if he were to use alternate picking.
He has a very unnatural self-taught style for more complicated techniques that shines through a lot more again when he plays acoustic, probably easier for him to keep in time that way. I think in his other performances on a Gibson for this, he uses up and down picking more. Good catch, it does look pretty strange and tense.
I find it much easier to play with all downstrokes like John here if I try alternate picking I lose rhythm and get discombobulated
