"magnesium components damp vibrations better than the aluminum counterparts" who the fuck came up with this marketing BS

    • @knott4me561

      Is also quite brittle !

Why do they not just say it's lighter??? Because it is, that's why VW made crankcases out of them back in the good old days.

If engineers put out statements about the truth of metallurgy, and submitted those statements to the marketing teams, and the marketing teams released that information to the public without altering a thing, the public would cry and moan that this too is "BS". Material science is ultimately about bonds between atoms. Who in the public understands squat about atomic bonds?

    • @trailfork7815
      @trailfork7815 Před 16 dny

@@exothermal.sprocket marketers take everything at face value. Sure the material has "better" damping capabilities but it's a stem, a short stem at that, a brick chunk of metal that basically has 0 flex to utilize that said vibration damping of the metal. If it was a handlebar sure, the pedal axles sure, rims sure but a short stem? Hahaha No. They take that information and market it as such without even understanding why
      Sincerely,
-an engineer that works with said metals

@@trailfork7815 LOL exactly! My favorite is the "X% stiffer" that it seems like every product advertises. But if it was already stiff enough to meet the requirements of what it needs to do, who cares?

Magnesium stem ? That takes some balls to make a mag stem ....might be light but Magnesium famously brittle

@@knott4me561 should alright if theres meat in the right place.
Mag pedals suck though, I use to have a set and my mate a different brand of mag pedals & the pins would rip out and deform the holes.

I don’t know, Mg use today is already not like it was a decade ago. The metallurgy used in something like the Mg Vault pedal is pretty great. Sure it gets damaged quicker than the aluminum version on big DH hits, but in my casual pedal strikes on rocks and roots locally it’s hardly noticeable difference, just lighter. No DH rider though is going to drop more $$ on lighter anyway though.

@@knott4me561 I'm sure it's not 100% magnesium, but an alloy of magnesium, so it may have some properties not possible 10 years back.... Would be interesting to find out the metallurgy

I want a series where Jessie-May Morgan walks around, dryly explains what something is, the proceeds to dryly sh*t on it to a nuclear degree.

New pedals is interesting. If they(Leatt) manage to offer complete rebuild kits like OneUp, and no special tools needed, it can be of interest. Only real downside with the OneUp pedals is the bump of the main bearing housing on the inside of the pedal, which you often will place your feet down at. I see these Leatt pedals will not have this issue.

also curious. for now ANVL (in--hous of Transition) are my n°1. grip is thru the roof, rebuild kits available but after 3 years of abuse they are still solid like new, no play, no free spinning, no creaks. hidden gem

like this girl! very spot on, no bs. leatt sits high in my books as a quality brand, lets see if the got the balls to bring some innovation to the market except lower weight. touchscreens on bikes, prepare for the apocalypse and buy your bike now before they go fully nuts in the future

Tell us your thoughts on the vibration damping benefits of Mg.. 🤬 🐂💩
    😂
Mg does have improved vibration damping vs. Al, though whether there is actually any effective difference from Stems or Pedals, I'm doubtful given the design intent for both is to have minimal compliance.
If they'd used it for one of the bars then it would be worth testing..
