That's maybe 8-12 divines all in to get the character off the ground, which is an overly safe estimate... which I would say is quite cheap, considering the quality of the character you get. Imo there is a misconception around armor stackers, ppl think they are more expensive than they are because the high end gets egregiously expensive, but the skeleton of the build is as cheap as any build as good as it.
Armour stacker is cheapest in week 1. Unlike many league starters that is prohibitively expensive in week 1. So if you got your cash start ready then you can get most of the things for pennies on the dollar. But that is hard. You could go with contracts. Either farming them or running them, logbooks, or just trying to farm out a couple of brothers gifts.
I still waiting for a tru Chieftain slam build.
Exerts need to be buffed before that happens. Seismic cry needs more multi for bleed and infernal cry needs to be buffed to have more ignite damage. There's no real reason to waste time stacking buffs when you can clear whole screens without buffing using any other skills
Chieftain just doesn't have an identity with mechanics proper to it, all the things that ascendancy has have their equivalent somewhere else in the game and for pretty much the same results.
The max res node which is one of the only 2 decently strong nodes of the ascendancy, obviously doesn't have a drawback so that's a plus, in the end you won't get higher than the 90% cap that's already achievable via other sources
The other is the explode node, well, at the end of the day that's just one of the many explode sources in the game and it's still really limited by it's low proc chance. Compare it to occultist explode which is able to play around it almost entirely for clearing maps, chieftain cannot do that with the low 5%, you will still need a decent clearing skill

@@lolleonlolable I did and I stand by what I said, I didn't say that chieftain was trash and unplayable, I said that for most part there's equivalent or better options. At the end of the day all ascendancies have some builds able to do everything in the game pretty comfortably
Here we're talking about "why it's not popular", the answer is just because it's not the best at things so people aren't inclined to try it, or they go towards other types of builds, simple as

@@Yaumyt hm i feel when it comes to explosions its just far better than anything else in the game. i charge into a pack of 20 mobs, i oneshot the whole screen insta killing all rares bosses whatever stands there, spawn like 50 beyond mobs and they insta die to the next explosion when they spawn. if you have a high ignite chance and alot of aoe its so fucking insane sometimes it even spreads oneshottin almost 2 screens of stuff. i prolly have a different view on stuff because i dont play sc. that explody flask for example is like 5-10d on sc and 100-150d on hc its not somehting everyone just has on hc.

Sadly true, even when I attempted Explosive Concoction ignite with Chief, because permanent -20 fire res on the dots is "no brainer" and allows different curse selection (Alch Mark or Punishment, maybe both) with alternative gem selection not concerned about lowering fire res, I was SEVERELY disappointed with the output of something that should really be the idea of the "go to" in concept. The defences certainly allow the idea of standing still but the damage provided by doing so only rears its head with powerful rare+ enemies or bosses (-20 on uber is wild).
now with affliction with have the curse that creates enemy minions on hit, so we can explode them on bosses. No?
I am leaguestarting a chieftain. The explosions deal a fuckton of damage, and if you ignite with em and prolif it you have great clear. And with a vaal breach you even get some boss damage xD
Armour stacker cheiftain is also really good taking armour node from Jugg
I really wanna try out exsanguinate ignite chieftain in SSF as a map farmer. The explosions should carry your clear damage-wise and bc you’re using exsang you can forego using Berek’s respite and run two rare DoT multi rings.
Gloves and medium cluster jool can both give you sizeable prolif

I meaannn... I started played PoE (for real) this year. Ive made around 10 builds this league and I would say that the Chieftain was the one that felt easier and cheaper to get tanky.
I do not know a lot of stuff but I know some and I have experienced 1k hours of testing this league and what I say is, Im league starting RF Chieftain next League! Worst case scenario i just make another build on my 2nd character
This league I started chieftain with fire dot build. Played with searing bond, scorching ray and later righterous fire. I never had so little damage. I took the -20 nearby enemy fire res against dmg over time while standing, then explode and finished with resistances. My passive tree didnt gave me any damage for 40 levels. Marauder has terrible skill tree for fire dots-almost none. It felt like playing ruthless or krangled. Had no damage majority of campain.

Does the Chieftan explodey work on the worms generated by The Writhing Jar? That could be a way to make it do some damage against lone enemies.

I tried this build and it just doesn't work. However, spamming the bottle is quite possible. The problem is the worms themselves - they have little life (about 400?), the poedb site gives wrong information about it, it doesn`t scale with map lvl at all. In 3.23 it`s much easier to spam Phantasms from Penance mark for the same goal and their explosions are fine.

With the upper 2 nodes, Chieftain can just open purity of fire and scale fire resist to cap resists, raise max res, stack armor and regen at the same time at the cost of helm slot, but the lower 3 nodes are absolute dogshit I don't know how they came up with those.
Despite all this, I'm hopeful. I feel like it's 1 build away from being one of the top chosen ascendancies (anyone remember blade blast/reap chief?). The fulcrum autobomber was a good build, but still not quite.
the -20 res for dot node isn't bad, and has a purpose [lol monsters have 50 extra ele res ALSO FIRE AND IGNITE RESISTANT AND MORE FROM ALTARSLOLOLTROOLED], but tawhoa is useless. Haven't tried slam hit based [ignite sucks even with a bigdik bonkhammer]
The fulcrum build was actually pretty bad. Not sure why people loved it. I am all for ignite proliferation though, but that version of of it (self ignite) was extremely underwhelming.
Much of what the chief excel at such as delving, simulacrum farming and so on are not really week 1 viable. It is viable in the sense that it will make you money. Just like how I used beast farming in my week one strat because that was content I actually wanted to run, sure I could have been more efficient for my week 1, but this was my first week 1 where I tried to get rich for later in the league. My league one was making 2 mirrors during the crucible league because me and my bro made high end items. But that is beside my point.
Chief is really great at few things, and those things are not really league start strats, but more mid league strats. And many people will make a single char and just run with that all league. So they want a great league start and mid league, where they can change currency strat without changing build.
I do not believe the people saying that there is always a better option than cheif. Because it is simply not true. He is the absolute number 1 Delver. The defences he gets are outstanding, and then the plus 2 target for strike skills are incredible for molten strike. And then you go armour stacker for the damage. You get the stupid breach armour with armour per overcapped fire res, and now you have high regen from your fire res, high armour, and also a billion damage. If you even use the standard armour for 21000 fire res, then you deal hit damage in the billions. Yeah it is a bug and that body armour might get deleted, but it is currently viable. Immortal, and with 30000 regen. Is that Uber sirus? Sorry I meant it was Uber sirus. Just gone, tornados do nothing thanks to 30k regen. This is an abuse scenario, but you can get 700+ fire res. So that is a ton of armour, damage and regen. All very valuable from a single stat. Ow yeah and all your res also increases by 50% of your fire res. So 700 fire res is 350 light and cold. You can max out your res with only fire res. So you go spell supp, fire res and chaos/regen rate.
We've reached a point where if a whole ascendancy is not enough, but has some good points, people will just go another ascendancy within the same class and get forbidden jewels for those good points. WIn-Win.

I got in to a debate yesterday with a somewhat well known streamer about Chieftain, and he said "The Ascendancy is better off now than it was before". I was thinking, "How? Only your one single build that no one plays accept you thinks this was a buff". And, that's the problem. GGG nerfs Chieftain and Saboteur into oblivion and people response is "Well, it does that one build OK, so it's good, they were buffed". While Chieftain and Saboteur lost nearly all builds they had. Now Hex blast is all anyone plays on Saboteur, all other traps and mine builds are played by other classes better. 2% of builds are Chieftain builds and 45% of them are using Righteous Fire and 34% fire trap. So Chieftain use to be Ignite EK and Molten strike, and Consecrated path totems. Now no one plays any of that. Totally destroyed
I've seen a lot of Bonezone juggs respecing into MF chief - you can use cheap gear (ventors with bad cold/lightning res, Greed's etc.) and still survive.
At the end of the day the jugg version is still much stronger, even in a mf scenario, unless you really want to play a chieftain cause you love it (chad move) there is no real reason to chose chieftain over jugg when playing Boneshatter as a marauder

I played a Chieftain build this league and all I can say is that it felt like I only need to run Lab twice. The other nodes are just so extremely niche that most builds just pick whatever is less bad. Nowadays you really only pick Chief for the 90% all ele res. Now what? Explosion and something or invest 4 ponts for Ancestral Call ?? these choises are just terrible. Where's my Strength? My Phys taken as Fire? Fire Dot Multi and Fire damage in general? I don't want to play another Chieftain :p
Same thing with guardian, only 1 node are viable for solo player which is sentinel, the rest are garbage.
My problem with it is why would you play melee and they reworked it to be way less valid of a caster ascendancy which is how I generally played it personally. Also you can explain it any way you want but how is chieftain explode good when you compare it with occultist lol

I think you start to realize as a experienced player Damage is Defense. Its much easier to survie a 30s boss fight then 5m boss fight. I think you also over sold the exploady node quite bit. Aside from simulacrum profane bloom is straight up better due to far more consistent changing. Frankly chieftain isnt played because its bad.

i realised this when i did a no regen map, yes i had to log because my own rf killed me after a while when there was nothing to kill and i tryd to enter an alva xD
BUT next time i entered the map i just DIDNT USE RF, my main damage, my 6link, and cleard the whole map (juiced t16 with beyond/breach etc) just fucking fine on a 4link firetrap that dosnt even had ideal damage links because i used lifetab with it. so tldr the explode is so fucking strong that you can basicly clear t16 in complete trash gear, prolly with a white wand.
my rf +my fire trap+coverd in ash+burning ground was only doing 1mil dps combined, but the clear was like playing a mirror tier autobomber on a almost unkillable char.
the fact that i could do no regen maps just fine prolly tells you about how fucking tanky this char was, i always klicked -%phys reduction shrines you dont even notice.
i did about 5 chayula breachestones and didnt even notice my purity of fire wasnt even on. (than i did on with less regen and thats when i noticed it xd)
thats a long answer im sorry but, honestly its one of the best builds i ever played, not sure how it will work without tattoos ofc.
id post a pob of this char id had some crazy good defensive tec that i came up with but youtube deletes pob links so yeah cheers.

obviously rf is a decent clear skill and with some density it'll clear more than fine that's still very far from the dps inquis or even elementalist is able to dish out while still being tanky enough to clear everything in the game easy and get better bossing or even clear with some elem+oriath end setup

i made it as tanky as possible. the fact that i could do t16 maps with no regen without using a health pot speaks for itself.

played rf jugg in blast of the past event with shit gear no regen in t14s+ was fine. dps was low stil enough to get voidstones easy
Same opinion, best ascendancy in the game for mapping in cheap gear, only 2 mandatory parts, chest that converts phys to fire, and helm that gives armor per uncapped fire and done, you can clear every possible juiced map without delirium. But if you add amulet defiance of Destiny, dawnbreaker and watcher eye to convert rest of the phys your character will be absolutely immortal even in 5 orbs with every possible combination of mods, triple damage, quadruple damage, doesnt matter at all, the strongest mods I had is 600% damage +crit in 5 orbs I doubt that there is any build at all that can do that in 1 portal exept mirror tier builds. 1 mil dps in pob is not relevant because its the explosions that do all the work. If a white mob dies near unique and explodes, that unique will die in 2-3 seconds. Idk how much HP Cosis has, but it is easy to calculate real dps of chieftain explosion from white mobs if you look at Cosis Hp at poedb. But there is not only white mobs in maps, if a rare explodes near any boss, he s gonna melt in less than a second.

I am actually glad for people not wanting to chose this ascendancy as it means less competition for me. I find this ascendancy the best league starter. I won't go through why. Never-the-less, the ascendancy was well thought out and there are far more than simply "2 nodes" worth using. I hope Chieftain never changes as I love it. Of course, I wouldn't complain if that buffed any specific node, but I don't believe it needs it. The rework was great and has a lot of synergies with existing gear sets or SSF.
chieftain is only good on hc ssf
It's honestly good enough to do anything in the game, SC, HC or SSF. Chieftain is actually very fun, blowing up expeditions, boxes etc feels pretty good
It's not because there's better options that it's completely trash and unplayable, far from that.
