    “The First” was my introduction to the Lupin franchise and since watching it about a month and a half ago, I’ve gone and really buried myself deep into all the content I been able to get my hands on; most of the parts, spin-offs, and movies, etc. I fell very in love with Lupin III because of the complexity of the series and the characters.
    The English dub of “The First” comes out very soon, and I’m hoping that Lupin will get a lot more attention after the dub is released. I went into this franchise knowing it goes back decades and I was very surprised to find that it has such a small following here in America regardless of its influence on much of our popular media over here as well as its influence on a lot of animes that are popular over here (i.e. Cowboy Bebop).
    Lupin III deserves a lot more love!! It’s an excellent series and I’m constantly wanting more people to talk to about it.
    Very nice video! I enjoyed much of your commentary!

      Yeah I really do hope "The First" gets more attention for the Lupin franchise. So far the promotion GKIDS has been doing is far better than I expected. The animation is done really well, I'm betting there will be a huge surge of interest in Lupin content shortly. It's just a matter of time. Thanks for watching!

Which than after some research, found studio Ghibli, and watched all of them in order of release afterwards (Even all anime related movies since). When "Lupin 3rd: the first" was announced last year, and watched the sub this past July, I started looking into the Lupin franchise more and now I'm 26 movies/specials/OVA's deep of the 42 that are out. true but the english speaking fan base there and in general is still very small, especially in proportion to the series length and relevance. it's really in japanese and italian speaking online spaces where you can find a large fandom because the show is mainstream and popular there. but of course most of us are monolingual, as unbeneficial as that is lol, it's just how society has raised us. so regardless i STILL think the english speaking anime community should discover this show more. it doesn't seem even 1/4 of the english one piece or persona fandoms have any idea about it despite it being an integral prequel to their faves and probably something they would get a kick out of just as much

  • @squirrel490-n1p
    @squirrel490-n1p Před 2 lety +1

    I hope more people come across your Lupin videos! They are really well made. It makes me really upset how small the english speaking fanbase is, considering how amazing the english dub is. I'm not a film student, but I am a huge nerd in that regard. I got into Lupin during the covid-19 quarantine and got all my friends to watch with me. Netflix is kind of overwhelming for me with so much content coming out recently, so I decided watch old anime. I really like animation and crime so it seemed like this show was made for me. Started watching the Miyazaki film and just went from there.
    I fell in love with Part 4 and 5 because of how classy, yet modern they felt. This show is really colourful, lively, and had so much energy. Reminds me of Guy Ritchie's films sometimes. And lets not forget how amazing the music is in Lupin III, the openings are wonderful - music was definitely one of the things that hooked me.
    I was sure that the fanbase would be much bigger, considering how much influence this show had on film/anime. Everyone's favourite Persona game is FILLED with Lupin references. I mean it literally has Jigen in it! And lets not forget Disney. Ducktales and Darkwing Duck just feel like you're watching Part 2 but with animals. This show must be a real gem for a film student lmao.
    I'm going to continue spreading the word about it, because it deserves so much love. I really hope people enjoy part 6!

    • @SNKJay
      @SNKJay  Před 2 lety

      Ah thanks! I feel the same way about how shocking it is just how few english-speaking fans are out there. Biggest reason why I wanted to make Lupin videos was because I hardly saw anyone else doing them! Strange, the shows are high-quality and often surprise me by how well the writing can get. I've heard of Guy Ritchie, guess I gotta check out the films that person has made (name certainly rings a bell). Your thoughts on Persona echo mine's so well, I can't believe how the things that came after Lupin are so much more popular than the og source of inspiration. Part of the reason I made these vids was to try and see if I could attract more people to the franchise -- thankfully I was mistaken, I kinda forgot about the other half of the world (Europe, Japan) that absolutely adore these characters, and I'm happy many watch my vids! I'm also happy you watch my stuff, thanks haha.
      Ducktales and Darkwing Duck.. I never made that Lupin connection. If there was any animated show I would compare Lupin to, it would be Scooby Doo, solely for how timeless both of them are. And yeah, I really can't wait for Part 6! I want it to be the show that reels people in, especially those same people who've seen the live action Netflix Lupin series, and/or the financially successful CGI film

    I got into Lupin III about a year or so ago after seeing an AMV on CZcams made form Jigen's Gravestone. Ended up watching the movie, then Goemon's Blood Spray. Loved it and wanted more, so I watched all of Part 5 and Castle of Cagliostro.
    I love this series. It has so much charm and personality. I've since watched about half of Part 1 and most of Part 4, and I revisit it whenever there's nothing really interesting on. It's never really boring to watch, and it's one of the only series I would say does well with self-contained episodes as opposed to overarching plots.

    6:15 YES YES yea i have to agree 100%, that Lupin bridges the gap between maturity and fun. the reason i got into it was being sick of shonen as well and not getting everything i needed from higher art such as Perfect Blue, as great as those are! as much as i love more artistic, serious and heady anime, lupin is a blast, it's funny and timelessly indulgent without being childish. and the art style is frequently experiential and visually stunning and at times artistically moving without being oscar-bait level heavy per say.
    Mob Psycho 100 was another that recently bridged that gap for me. the only upside of lupin being how refreshing it is to have a full cast as older to middle aged adults. but who behave in looney tunes like antics and tarantino like action. (rather than a more grounded sitcom or drama where more adult casts fall into). when you're an adult yourself you do get tired of teen and child protagonists 24/7 simply because we all want full fledged lead characters who are our own age sometimes lol

      Yeah, I feel really bad for saying how underrated it is. I should've clarified better, in America, in my generation at least, Dragon Ball z, Pokemon, Naruto, were the main highlights of anime. They hogged most screentime for American television, that and there are other shows too but Lupin was typically at the bottom, in America when I was growing up at least

    As great as Cagliostro is, I don’t think it’s a very good representation of the franchise as a whole because of how different the tone and vibes are. It feels more just like a Miyazaki classic than a Lupin film. So I personally wouldn’t recommend people to start with that. I think The First is a great one to start with although I think the mystery of Mamo is the best Lupin movie.

    • @SNKJay
      @SNKJay  Před 3 lety +1

      That's a good point, it really is too different and more Miyazaki's flavor for what he idealized Lupin to be. Mystery of Mamo is great, I forgot to talk about it in this video. The First is the nicest way to get a start, and there are other TV specials/movies from Lupin that are worth watching, but really hard to find. Castle of Cagliostro's iteration of Lupin also made another appearance nearly a decade after with the conspiracy of the fuma clan, a nice OVA but unheard of thanks to never being rereleased since 2007. Mystery of the Mamo I need to talk about one of these days, excellent film

      Castle of Cagliostro is my favorite movie/special for Lupin. Great introductory film to get into. Part 1 I like for its darker but more faithful interpretation of Monkey Punch's vision, that stuff is good. Yeah, I mean I'd say Lupin is unique in that it adheres to really niche and interesting storylines, things that are seen as too risky for mainstream audiences. You wouldn't find some of these plots in -- let's say, a superhero film. Completely different genre, but still there wouldn't be a push to have the more risky storytelling Lupin goes for (especially in the woman called Fujiko Mine series).

    I wouldn't really say that the franchise is as niche as it was a few years ago. Thanks to the new shows that came out it helped boost the franchises popularity among regular western anime watchers/consumers. And with how well received and beautiful the new movie looks also coupled with the fact that it's getting an english dub it might help attract a more mainstream audience mixed in a little with animation buffs. So in terms of western popularity this is the most it has ever been, and if this momentum continues probably even more so.

    People don't care about how stuff looks any more, they just want a quick fix. It's sad.
    Case in point: look at nearly any cartoon from the 1980s. (FWIW... I was born in '86. I'm only saying this because sooner or later some smartypants is gonna pop up and say "OK Boomer" if I don't. I'm a Millennial, even if most days I feel old enough to have had toes frozen off at Valley Forge. Now get off my lawn before I get out the RoundUp.) Look at 80s Batman. 80s Voltron. 80s Heathcliff. 80s... freakin anything cartoon. Now look at, IDK, is SpongeBob still on? Fairly OddParents?
    That crap is Saturday Morning cartoons the way store brand "sticks & twigs" oat bran is a cereal. Yeah, you can eat it for breakfast... but is that really what you want to bring home? Even plain Cheerios is more exciting than *that* crap.
    The zombie invasion already happened, in the worst possible way. It came from within... we lost, and we didn't even realize what was happening. We numbed ourselves and our children, so that we didn't have to feel the pain of the world.
    I'm going to go look at that other video now, because I'm one of the few who can still feel, and I want to stay that way.
    For the rest of you out there... anyone who reads this, do me a favor. It's simple, and it's a two-part thing. One, find someone today who needs a hug, qnd hug them. Two, find someone you really want a hug from, and get them to hug you. Spouses and relatives don't count... obviously if it's some uncivilized time of night or morning, wait till it isn't. Oh... and if you want, do it across multiple days... or make it more than hugs, do favors and really help people. Sometimes folks need more than a hug.

In my opinion personally i think The mystery of mamo captures lupin perfectly and is the most faithful adaptian to the manga it was dark but funny and cartoony too just like the manga. i belive monkey punch stated even that it's his personal favorite lupin movie! That's what i love about this sereis i can look at any movie or show or ova and say it kept true to it's roots. It has something for everyone action, comedy, occasional romance, wacky shenanigans, fanservice, science fiction, noir, lighthearted adventure stories, dark and depressing stories, and sometimes even both. i truly love this anime everything about it weather it be the manga, the films, the animes, evrything about it is just Perfect.

    I was thinking about The Woman Called Fujiko Mine recently and I figured the reason why the series is darker and Lupin is portrayed less pleasantly (and looks uglier) is because the story is from Fujiko's point of view rather than Lupin's. It's pretty cool that different art styles and story tones can be done (and make sense) due to it being a different character's point of view.

      Haha, nice to know there are more people who like the same things as me out there! The ending Part 5 was definitely.. interesting, I suspect in Part 6 we'll get more info on what happened to the cast afterwards. Cowboy Bebop, despite being so short, got me too attached to the characters, yeah episode 26 got me, incredible show

    Hey, so idk if this is like a rant or a response or something. But these are my unfiltered thoughts floating around. Don’t take some of my comments too personally and take them with a grain of salt of course. I’m not confident in saying I have the right answers really.
    Alright, so, I don’t know if it’s just me but I don’t know if I would really look into Lupin III as a franchise to have deep meanings and commentaries about stuff lol. Then again, perhaps there’s a few TV specials I’ve missed that actually touched on subjects like these? Idk, man… from what I’m exposed to, the franchise is more about fun spectacle. Maybe some material pays lip service to those subjects but I’m just not really seeing it. Some fans even say they don’t think too hard when it comes to Lupin III so… Idk haha
    Maybe once in a blue moon, we might get some development from the characters i.e. in Part 5 when the characters and their relationships were challenged. Blood Seal of the Eternal Mermaid and Castle of Cagliostro also had Lupin reflect on his life as a thief, but it seems like after this, he remains static.
    I mean, to be honest with you… I kinda feel burnt out on some Lupin stuff lol. Like I feel like they still use the same tropes over and over, i.e. Lupin fake out deaths, person from Jigen’s past comes back to haunt him etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean tropes are bad per se. Tropes are writing tools and really, I feel like sometimes we harp on something for being tropey where really, we should care more about the execution. For example, the older, wiser character with a younger, inexperienced kid going on an adventure is a trope, but it’s been done numerous times like in The Last of Us, God of War 2018, Simon and Marceline in Adventure Time, The Mandalorian. So really, I think the real issue is poor execution when it comes to tropes.
    Even then, I feel like the over reliance on them can be detrimental as well as not harming the status quo. You say you got bored of shonen because of this reason, but I can’t help but feel the same way about Lupin III sometimes. It’s kinda ironic that the tropes used to subvert audience expectations are so predictable now. For a franchise that celebrates creative freedom and not be restricted by continuity, you’d think it would tell a diverse range of stories, but it seems like TMS isn’t interested in doing so. This franchise has been running for 50 years now and honestly? Idk how people are still that into it, no offence. Heck, I already feel burnt out on TV specials after a handful of them… Idk I guess how I feel about Lupin is how you feel about shonen.
    And even if TMS took risks like with Part 5 (breaking a bit of the status quo) and The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, it seems like the fans aren’t happy about it. Like I don’t even know why they harp on continuity and characters acting out of character. It’s a show that’s all about freedom, right? But I guess some people like to gatekeep their personal versions of the characters…
    Idk if it’s just me but I really feel like you have this black and white view on shonen, you know? Seems like you’re cherry picking very surface level stuff here my guy. I’m sure shonen is more than just, “people fighting”, “cringey dialogue” and “gum-gum”… stuff. My Hero Academia, at some point, explored stuff of what is means to be a hero. Recently, the new Spy x Family manga explored how you can’t rely on news outlets to do the thinking for you. Doesn’t sound that surface level and cringey to me… Honestly some of the qualities you like about Lupin can be applied to shonen... Like yeah there are some stories and moments in shonen where it is just fun goofs and cool spectacle, but there are moments where it can be just as thought provoking, if not more than Lupin.
    The word “art” should really just be one meaning… And that it is a form of craft by humans through expression of skill or imagination. I’m sorry to say, but that live-action Dragon Ball movie _is_ art. The Room is art. Revenge of the Sith is also art. They may be of poor quality, but work, effort and skill are still poured into these projects. There can be good and bad art and it’s ok to label them as art. Like I know Scorsese labelled Marvel movies as theme park rides, but c’mon… they’re still cinema. Let’s not be pretentious here… I guess Citizen Kane is high art and all that, but there is still stuff like concept art, CGI, some practical effects, acting, music scores being worked on by so many people. Comedies like Hot Fuzz has a lot of work put into the research and writing clever jokes. Like idk… Why can’t we call them art? Why can’t they all be artistic? Why do we have to come up with arbitrary criteria to label something as “art”?
    And idk, I feel like it’s unproductive to have this weird romanization of what is considered to be “artistic”. I think what is considered “artistic” in your definition can be applied to bad art as well. Like some people love Revenge of the Sith, despite how clunky the dialogue is and the numerous plot holes it has. Some people emotionally resonate with Anakin’s fall to the dark side and how a beloved hero has become a villain. Some people cry even... Heck some people feel stuff when watching The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Positive feelings mind you. Like now what? Lol
    And what if people pondered about the messages in those bad films lol. Like the line in Revenge of the Sith, “Only a Sith deals in absolutes”, though it is a meme line, does have deeper meaning in it. Like how thinking without grey areas and acting based on ideological point of views can be detrimental to critical thinking. Like what if people had that takeaway from the movie and had some kind of introspective/reflective journey or something lol.
    If I want to throw in my two cents on the matter. I truly believe the best way to introduce someone to Lupin is probably through Episode 0: First Contact or Blood Seal of the Eternal Mermaid. I think a lot of the material in Lupin lean a little too heavily on either side of the tonal spectrum. Castle of Cagliostro and Mystery of Mamo, though as good as they are, aren't very user-friendly and might skew the viewer into what they can expect out of Lupin III. The 2 TV specials listed here are the ones that have a balanced tone and has that nice blend of goofy and violent stuff in there. And I think these specials let beginners know what chemistry they have with each other and the kinds of abilities they possess, with sufficient screen time for all of them. Not to mention these are pretty good specials in their own right.
    In any case, I hope you enjoyed this wall of text here? haha

    Reservoir Dogs took (stole? whitewashed?) its whole plot from City on Fire. I guess it’s sort of like Lupin as well.

      Haha, you're right. Tarantino admitted he did, but he didn't have to it was pretty obvious :) both are great films, Resevoir Dog's dialogue is incredible, that and Pulp Fiction. Such classics, I never thought Resevoir Dogs was like Lupin tho in that way, you right

      Crunchyroll has all the parts, but the Fujiko Mine series is difficult. You'd have to buy it on blu-ray, but even that's hard to find. You can use kissani if you have to
