  • Before Castle of Cagliostro, there was the first Lupin film. The one TMS used to take advantage of the film industry's lax content standards to make a Lupin that was more true to the spirit of Monkey Punch-sans original manga. The result is wild and crazy plot with equally wild and crazy animation that nevertheless ends up being the best starting point for the Lupin franchise.

The most interesting part about is it’s set up as kind of a clever 4th wall break and then literally cuts back to what’s actually happened to the utter surprise of the audience. I know it caught me completely off guard lol

I like to think of them as setting the polar ends of the Lupin franchise - at least for movies. Mamo is truer to the wacky, sex-driven nature of the manga while Cagliostro is about as sweer and gentle as it'll go without straight-up being something else. Great movies that show two very different sides of its titular character.

This movie's bat shit insane and I love it, it's got a lot of flaws but in place of it has ideas that are explored to a really great and interesting degree. The character interactions between the gang are some of the best the entire franchise has to offer and Fujiko's characterisation is really good. The scene where Lupin walks off to go steal back his "dream" is some Real Folk Blues shit, gives me chills every time. It's one of the few instances in all of Lupin where Lupin actually comes off as a legend in his own way.

Mystery of Mamo has the best conspiracy in an anime movie. What really wraps it all together is that Lupin is a bad guy but he cares more about the world than any of his antagonists.

I fist got my hands on a copy of this movie in the early 2000’s when I was about 11, at a comic con in San Diego. The movie caught my eyes because of the topless Fujiko on the cover. I had never seen Lupin before. And I got the movie from the stand for a good price and took it home. Fujiko in this movie was my “awakening” in a sense. But that’s TMI.
The movie resonated with a young version of myself because of all of the chases, the stakes being raised and raised. Mamos offer of immortality being rejected with a line that I still remember to this day. “Forever isn’t really forever”. And I thought he was so cool. I was hooked and I’ve been a fan ever since.

finally, i'm tired of people saying that "The Castle of Cagliostro is the best introduction to Lupin III franshize". Yes, it's a good Miyazaki film and overall a really impressive animation piece that influenced a lot of animators in it's time, but that doesn't mean it's a good introduction to Lupin and his gang. It feels more like a resolve for those characters instead of introduction.
"The Mystery of Mamo" is a better introduction to the series because it lets you feel what Lupin III is about.

I highly enjoyed Mystery of Mamo, but I will take Castle of Cagliostro in a heartbeat. Both are wonderful ways to get into Lupin, and I honestly think Mamo’s Lupin is like a much younger Lupin, while Cagliostro’s Lupin as you mentioned is one who has matured, and I honestly think of the two as one. But both movies are great in their own rights.

First off, thank you. I saw Branded to Kill in an arthouse theatre and kept thinking that it was VERY Lupin/Monkey Punch (and not because of Seijun Suzukis involvement in the Pink Jacket film). That's been racking my brain for a while and you've got the pieces connected.
Second, I think the best introduction is Lupin the 3rd part 2s anime because I think it's light enough that it's not Cagliostro... But it has some darkness here and there and overall stays true to the characters. I tried introducing a friend to Lupin via Mamo once and it uhh.... It didn't turn out as I had hoped. However, the people who I introduce via the gag dub of Part 2 tend to stick around because their expectations are "Oh this franchise can get nuts." And not feel awkward around Lupin giving Hitler a salute.... Yeeeeeah.
Third, I can't watch Mamo without thinking of Futurama anymore. "THE BIG BRAIN AM WINNING AGAIN! NOW I'M LEAVING EARTH FOR NO RAISIN!"
    Brilliant video man.

I think the patchy story, lack of meaningful resolution to some of the threads in the plot, and the stream-of-consciousness feel in some scenes just felt off putting and not that fun to watch. Nothing changes, Zenigata's still fixated on Lupin despite the fact that arresting him could mean the end of the world, and the whole thing with the Commissioner is never brought up again afterwards, not even the inspector's supposed daughter (or soon-to-be ex-wife in the Manga UK dub). Nothing of value would be lost if they cut that whole scene out.
