  • Golgo 13 is one of the most classic longest-running manga in history and in the 80s, it finally got itself an anime film with Golgo 13: The Professional. Osamu Dezaki takes what could've been a pulpy exploitation flick and spins it into pure cinematic gold that sells you on a gekiga staple.

      CGI was being done by the early 70S. It was expensive, but doable by the early 80s. Watch The Last Starfighter to see where Hollywood was at with CGI around the time this came out.

      Just because this is an interest of mine... If you'd like to see a visual history of the early years of computer animation, look up a video here on YT called "Visual Pathfinders: Robert Abel & Associates." They were one of the most technically advanced CGI studios of the 70s, and as a demo reel it nicely illustrates the evolution of CGI from roughly 1970 to 1985.
      (Also, if you happen to be into vaporwave, there are some AMAZING 80s car commercials around 2/3 of the way through.)

    Fantastic video! Was a Golgo nut back in high school thanks to this film.
    Rewatched the anime series, live actions, this and Queen Bee after Saito’s passing and was reminded how genuinely great the series is. I can’t stand the critics you mention because they clearly just don’t understand the franchise. Very black and white view to just say a stoic character is boring when there’s clearly so much done in the world around them on top of subtle moments of humanity brought to them. Each Golgo piece, from manga to TV to film, has really subtle moments where he reacts or does things for people around him and it contextualizes his stoicism: he's not just a professional killer, but THE best, meaning who knows how many people and governments may be after him. The fact he kills, the fact he's in constant danger, he's 100% always living on the edge. The story "Fearless" is all about this fact, Golgo even admitting that he does have fear like any normal person, and that fear IS what's kept him alive so long. Killing people as a career will take its toll on you too. The early Mangas had him smiling and cracking jokes at times, but slowly as the series progressed he got to this point where we know him now. It probly wasn't intentional at first, Saito having written James Bond manga beforehand and making Golgo as a response to continuing that kinda work, but the concept was executed wonderfully once the stories decided to shift. Golgos the only character who truly has no ego whatsoever, 100% behind reason, logic and objectivity until those rare moments he does do something in the favor of another. That’s what keeps it from being just trash to me. The Schwarzeneager masculine elements are there but the series is way deeper than just that. The Professional understood this better than the other film adaptations. While the live actions and Queen Bee aren’t bad, and utilize the character respectfully in their own ways, The Professional eats sleeps and breathes the character and is a great representation of the franchise’s genius.

    Duke is so arc-typical that you are likely to run into a parody before you ever catch an episodde at least outside of Japan. My favorite is when he is one of the suspects in Patlabor's "Bathhouse" OVA episode.
    I also remember that both G13 and Later Crying Freeman had episodes about arming a private army with a lost stash of type 100 SMGs. When just laying hold of a bunch of AK-47s would be much easier and far more effective. Japanese conspiracy plotting (especially from the 60s and 70s) is wild and very silly..

    The best way to describe Golgo 13 the character is that he's an antihero who has little to no regard for human life. He's not a righteous hero, but he isn't a villain either. But rather, he's a bit of both. Golgo just doesn't give a flying f*ck about ANYTHING. He's like a Terminator with the faint shred of humanity. He can be either friend or enemy to the world depending on the circumstances. But he's not someone you'd want to mess with. But he has been one of my biggest inspirations as far as writing goes. Ever since my exposure to The Professional WAY BACK in 2000 when I saw it for the first time.

    The only time I can remember an assassin / bad ass getting a backstory and it working was the first John Wick. Even then, they were pretty vague. I feel the sequels were fine, but on fleshing him out more it ruined his mystery. I also think the first Jason Borne escaped that trope too, but in reverse. Him learning that he was a badass on the fly with the audience helped make the stonecold killer that he was more interesting. BUT like before, once we did start learning more about him he became boring. So character like this are best when the audience is given very little to go off of, I think. It means you never know what they got in them to do or how they'll get out of a situation because you can't be in their head.

    • @kaijudirector5336
      @kaijudirector5336 Před 2 lety +3

      It can work both ways. Wick's not supposed to be a heartless killing machine. Golgo works very well as a man of mystery, John works well as a somewhat human and relatable character.

    • @Strideo1
      @Strideo1 Před 2 lety +2

      It seems like a lot of modern writers working in film and TV these days don't understand the value of mystery. They seems to feel the need to explain everything and leave very little to the audience's imagination. It's those mysterious elements that often make a story really stick in my mind and get me to think about them though.

    People seem to fail to understand that a Mary Sue/Stew is a character that exhibits hyper-proficiency in stories that are not their own. Sherlock Holmes or James Bond are not Mary Sue characters in their respective stories, but they could very well be if you put them in someone elses. There is nothing wrong with having exaggerated competent characters, and history has shown that written well these characters are very appealing to a vast number of people. The problem is there aren't really a lot of writers out there that are capable of handling these type of characters well, which is when you get people saying silly stuff like, "XXX charcter is boring", and they totally miss the point by either trying to making the character less competent, or giving them a character arc to "humanize" them, which generally tends to ruin everything about the character -- it's the mark of a bad writer, and it's super prevalent in today's media that don't seem capable of creating original work that people want to consume, so they end up trying to update older works that were already proven to be popular.

      Same, but it's a tough sell (especially nowadays). Manga has become so mainstream and old school Gekiga isn't what people are looking for. Politically, even as older works, they'd be passed on by most readers and bookstores.
      Back in the 80s and 90s adult male-focused manga, sold as graphic novels, were most of what you'd find from Japanese creators. Nowadays that stuffs looked down on hard, and "Adult Manga" immediately spells Hentai for most.

    This is totally not my type of film, but I checked it out back when you could just get the dub, cuz I had just discovered Dezaki (thanks to his shoujo stuff) and it is indeed peak Dezaki (his 90s OVA follow up, Golgo 13 Queen Bee is worth checking out but not nearly as good--or high budget of course).
    I'm always blown away at the work Dezaki did, all at a high level, in roughly 5-6 years from 77-83 or so. Off the top of my head, Nobody's Boy Remi, Treasure Island, the back half of Rose of Versailles, Ashita Joe 2, and Space Cobra (co-direction) for TV, and the Aim for the Ace, Space Adventure Cobra, and Golgo 13 movies. (Of course 1984 would be when his masterpiece, the pilot of Rainbow Brite, would come out.) Outstanding, and his visual style is apparent in each, and yet each also has their OWN visual style--and he seems as devoted to each of those projects no matter what their audience or market. No wonder he smoked something like two packs a day, with all that work.... (And that's not to put down his earlier work--Frosty aside. The first Joe is a classic for a reason, and the original Aim for the Ace's insane colour palette and poor actual animation often put people off, but it's amazing how absorbing the designs and his direction make a 1973 TV anime. I remember initially thinking I'd only check out a few episodes as being a shoujo fan and a Dezaki fan I kinda had to, and just binging half the series in one night)
    AND he was always a director for hire--his anecdote about how he became the replacement director for Rose of Versailles is hysterical (granted most anime directors were and are, but when we think of other famous anime directors, they usually had some say in their choices)
    Of course you've well documented some of the crap he did just a few years later, like all those late 80s-early 90s OVAs often for his brother (though that period also gave us the brilliant Oniisama E and the underrated, yakuza josei OVA Kasei Yakyoku, as well as the pretty good Aim for the Ace OVA series--projects where he seemed much more invested), but... And then later in his career only a few true returns to form like Blackjack and not, sadly, the Golgo 13 OVA though it's worth checking out. But
    still, wow.

Good to know about the Hollywood Theater though! do love that about the theaters in PDX, lots of fun showings. Caught Blade Runner at Clinton Street back in the summer and really enjoyed the experience

    But otherwise, I was thinking Nobuhiko Obayashi while watching Cobra and Golgo.

    Def a classic. Great review. But I wouldn't describe anything as "problematic". That's the language of the matrix of thought control. There's no virtue in denying the existence of unsavory traits. No virtue at all in refusing to show things that are offensive or seen as negative character traits. I have to keep reminding folks nowadays that stories, whether fiction, or true, are not instruction manuals. They are not recommendations of action. They are not educational blueprints for action. They are portrayals of the good, the bad, and the ugly. We cannot censor these things when making art. We must be honest and show what is. Raw, unfiltered. There is no shame in an author who writes a villain as a villain, or a playboy as a playboy. That's what these things are. They exist. It's not a reflection of the author in real life. He did not put together a udemy class on how to be terrible. He made art, and a story.
    People are terribly illogical in their reactions to things nowadays. When a person watches a movie they should never say "I don't like that" regarding the behavior of the characters. Of course you don't. You shouldn't. It is not to be liked. Stories of Greek gods with all of their terrible deeds are likewise NOT problematic. Because there is no call to action to go do terrible things. Quite the opposite these are morality stories and cautionary tales. One cannot have stories that feature moral conflict without BAD, unsavory, and terrible things. Never apologize for this. I know KaiserBeamz doesn't need to hear that... but then don't use the language of that oppressive matrix that would seek to censor and ruin truth in art. Don't say things are "problematic" they are not. The tip of the spear of freedom is the act of defiance, and refusing to use the oppressors language, labels, and definitions. How dare they insinuate guilt and problems upon art.

    just finished watching the movie and it was great! Nobody dares make art like this anymore and the people complaining about the portrayal of the women is the reason why. Dawson betraying his son's widow and granddaughter in the manner portrayed is bold, but it highlights just how much of an evil asshole he is.

    Wounded Man is great. well the OVAs are mediocre for the same reason the Crying Freeman OVAs are mediocre (largely removing any sense of humor) but if anyone decides rape is ok or has their views on women's rights changed cuz of a Koike manga that's their fault. it's still an amazingly executed manga.

    I would call the portrayal of women here "disrespectful" or "limiting" (if it was my review and it is not). "Progressive" is such a funny word, it implies there is a goal you're progressing towards. But if you ever reached that goal......... you wouldn't be progressing anymore, would you?
