Buying candy by weight is actually pretty popular in the Nordic countries. It allows you to buy a wide variety of candy, which often can’t buy i regular candy sections. The prices often a little under €1 per 100 grams. You wind find this type of candy in most supermarkets and convenient stores. In Denmark we call it “bland selv slik” or “mix-your-own-candy” and in Sweden I believe it’s “lösgodis” or “loose candy”
Most people in Norway do that
We call it Pick 'n' Mix in the UK. It used to be known as really expensive when we paid by weight, but now they've started doing cups that you fill and pay by the size of the cup instead and it seems more reasonable.
In Finland as well, you’ll find them in all of the bigger grocery stores. It’s called irtokarkki (loose candy).
Yes but we are in czech and these kinds of stuff are expensive because... we are czech and we have to get charged for everything extra. Dumb people will actually pay for it.
We had them in the Midwest in America but I've never seen them since moving to California. I remember as a kid you could buy one piece for five cents or three pieces for ten and that was always our treat for behaving at the grocery store, I always got the Brach's big gummy bears.
I really wanted to see him try to take a bite out of that rock-hard candy.
@gacha Clarie Ah, thank you for satiating my curiosity. 🙏😊
You cant really bite it. You have to lick or suck it. Aint worth losing a tooth
isn't it squishy inside
There is a reasonable chance that a lot of these tourists won't see this video... I need to open a candy store ASAP before this video blows up. 😄
Tourist's buy from these places to try a variety of candy.. so I doubt it matters. You aren't exactly going to head to a supermarket and buy 50 bags so you can try 50 different variations of candy.

@@christianhanbali6286 okay, sorry for generalization. I thought you meant every type of candy, including traditional ones that are available in specific countries
Yeah i rather go to a bakery or an actual confectionary from that country than buy candy that seems universal.
I read the comments and people are shocked. They obviously haven't been to a Disney park.
I think why people are more shocked, though I agree, is because it's not an enclosed and branded theme park you are visiting. Places like Disney Land, Universal, and even smaller entities like Six Flags, know people will pay more for the experience. And alot theme park places do not allow you to bring outside food and drink. So it's a rigged system that's kind of expected. And while I suppose you you could make a similar point with places like Prague, it's different because it's not a single branded place. It's a city with different entities. People want an experience but they want an authentic experience and that's not authentic.
I just wrote that. any tourist place and airports.
@@frankyflowers yep, just designed to rip you off. Actually cinemas are the same.
@@WillOfTheWeb bars too you could just buy pure grain alcohol wholesale and save a ton.
Authentic experience and tourism are mutually exclusive. If any place becomes as popular and famous as Prague, then it is not a place to go for an authentic experience. For that, places like Most, Litvínov or Ústí nad Labem are the places to go. There are no tourist scams at all and the visitors might even get mugged in a very authentic way.
I always thought those candy shops seemed really unsanitary. Just open barrels of candy for customers to go cough and sneeze into all day. And it's just staying like that during Covid?
Look at Czech Covid numbers man. No surprise there.

He would also splurge on funnel cake.
If you're ever in the Netherlands or Belgium and want to scoop candy like this, you should go to Kruidvat. They have multiple stores in each city and sell their candy at 0.75€ per 100 grams.
In Finland "Prisma" sometimes sells candy for as low as 0.50€/100g

this is convincing enough to say "think like a local, not a tourist"
Exactly.
Tips from a local (once this pandemic stops being crazy): Go to our supermarket and try Czech bread. Most of the Czechs miss our pastry when they're in different country. Yeah, we too have sometimes toasts for a snack, but you can have that home. You can by a half or a quater of the most common one. Try some rolls. Buy some of our candy. Once in restaurant, I recommend "svíčková" (but I admit I like homemade better). If you can, try to cook some of our meals at home. You probably would not find some ingredients elsewhere. Prague Is beautiful but crowded, I recommend Olomouc or Český Krumlov. Learn one, two, three words in Czech. Older Czechs are quite colder towards foreigners, but once you speak in Czech and compliment on anything, they will embrace you (most of the time). Try our beer (even if you are not beer person, try - Czech and German beer is the best in the world, I am sure). If you are more into wine, go to Moravian part of country and try some of it. If you want to see some beautiful nature, Czechia will give you some of it, but Slovakia has a lot more to offer. It is not so far away, try it. Try some of Czech (Czechoslovak) movie. Especially some fairytale during winter (Christmas).

i did go to a candy store in prague but it was very different, It claimed to be the oldest candy store in prague, I don't know how true that is, but they made their own cut rock/image candy which I bought a bag of and thoroughly enjoyed.
Are there people who seriously can't tell by the look of the place that you're going to pay by weight?
I mean, where I live pay-by-weight stores are generally cheaper, and it's probably difficult to realize the prices are wild when it's in a different language, using a different currency, and a different unit of mass measurement.
and like what are you gonna do when they tell you your daughter's 1 bag of candy is 30 euro, dump it back into the display?
@@Zreknarf in an alternate universe where I'd be dumb enough to walk in in the first place, you bet I'd leave the candy on the counter. No one is forcing anyone to spend your money...unless it's taxes
@@Zreknarf Um, heck yeah, I would just leave it at the counter and tell them to have a nice day. I got two of those strawberries in Dubrovnik for like four Euro. Too much for sure, but a doable vacation splurge if you're so inclined.
Exactly. That's why i disliked this video. It is extremely obvious that you pay by weight
Many people think that the quoted price is *per pound,* when it's really *per 100 grams.*
1lb ~ 454g
We have this in all food shops in Sweden. We call it “loose candy” but it’s aproximatley 6 cent - 1$ /100 g instead.
Here in the UK, we call them "pick 'n' mix" or "one penny sweets". And a small packet of a classic British sweet from a supermarket can cost as little as 10p.
In the US they used to call it penny candy, but since they now charge about 5 pennies a piece it is just confusing lol. Grocery stores tend to call it bulk candy.

Yeah, basically all pic'n'mix is way more expensive than buying bags in a super market. Cinemas spring to mind, I think the last time I went to the cinema pic'n'mix was £1.99 per 100g which is currently around €2.1 per 100g. Not as bad as this but that's just my local cinema, not a tourist attraction! I'm sure you'll pay even more for pic'n'mix in a tourist area of London.
Not really.
M&M store in Leicester Square is one
@Jon Mckeown that's a cinema scam, not a tourist scam.. tourists dont go across the world to go to a cinema
In London they have a lot of candy stores with ready packaged candy in their original packaging, usually candy imported from america etc, stuff you can't get in regular stores. But they don't have price tags. You need to ask to find out the price. And they would just make them up on the spot. A chocolate bar from Australia could suddenly cost anything between £5-8
