That is really cool. I didn't even know about this. I did my head gaskets a year and a half ago. The cups were installed by the machine shop right after they resurfaced the heads, which is the incorrect way. 6 months later, my cups were leaking. I was disappointed. I learned that the cups are supposed to be installed, and the injectors torqued down right away. After that, I haven't had an issue since. Pushing 325,000 miles. I've read about threaded injector cups, but it sounded like more of a risk than anything having to cut threads into the head. I bought my lb7 duramax 3 and a half years ago off of craigslist. The engine was blown, so I got it pretty cheap. Bought a wrecked truck with similar miles to use as a donor truck. Your how-to's have kept me on the road time and time again. Thanks Josh!

WOW.... Very cool episode. That is a game changer. Perfect for compound turbos in heavy boost applications. All your points are very valid and something to consider. When you said $1600 each, I about spit my coffee out on my computer. PPE did a good job at hitting a good price point. Cast-iron heads are just brutally tough, but they were priced too high for the average shade tree or DYI enthusiast guy.
2 years ago, when I drove off into my build, I wanted a pair of these cast-iron heads, but they were just out of my price range and didn’t seem rational for my build. Some of them were around $5500 apiece - race ready. That’s a little steep. I was super pumped when Edelbrock came out with their aftermarket aluminum heads. They were made from the same 625 hardened aluminum and incorporated the injection cup into the block - super big bonus for Around $1700 apiece. Nick Pregnizt at Calibrated Diesel ran a good comparison on a dyno - right off the shelf. In my view, the results were less than impressive and didn’t justify the cost and really weren’t that efficient. If I purchased the heads, I would still need about $1800 worth of porting and machining to get the kind of performance I wanted. I’m not knocking the Edelbrock heads, but we are talking about money and horsepower in the same breath - it can sometimes break up of family and a divorce.
So, for six months, I dove down the cylinder head and camshaft rabbit hole. Hard to wrap your mind around everything that happens in milliseconds and small fractions. It’s mind-boggling. Had a lot of discussions about heads with Guy Trip and Gabe at SoCal, Austin at Wagler.....and 10 others…. I even called the God of the camshafts himself - “Banks”. I wanted to move more air smoothly and evenly, get the heat out and create a bigger swirl and build big pressure in the cylinder chamber. That’s really difficult to do with direct injection. The only way you can do that is have a custom port job by someone who really knows what they're doing. It’s just not rounding off sharp edges, there is actually a science to it. Very small changes can make a huge difference in performance and the life of the engine. These heads would work just fine for applications around 850 hp “ish” and last a long time. Anything more you’re going to be needing some durability. Especially when you’ve got a very large compressor pushing large volumes very quickly. (Maybe wise to consider 625 ARP head studs at that point).
The cast-iron heads are so much more durable. You can push all kinds of pressure through those and those won’t tweak one bit. Since their iron, they expand and contract at the same rate as your block - that the big thing. This looks like a good deal. Thanks for making an episode on this.
I don’t think it’s fair for you to pick on “Earl”. He’s a good guy and a snazzy dresser.
Thanks for the content - keep up the good work :)

I put a set on dad's truck after erosion on the cup seat made them prone to headgasket blown symptoms without blown headgaskets. We put 45 over sac injectors into the truck. Turbo had a new cartridge put in that was 2mm bigger. The tune was from Lincoln diesel. Advanced timing, shorter injection pulse, etc. Exhaust is acrid smelling. Not like sweet carbon.
I had the tune in the truck after doing headgaskets the first time without the new heads. The tune gave more power, but I could run the truck in tune 5 on gravel with no problem. Cup seat problems reared their ugly heads. Dad read about and wanted the Edelbrock heads. I found a set and got them put on the engine. Truck with no other changes mechanically or tuning wise is now undrivable on gravel in tune 4. Lots more power, tows better, and seems to do better on fuel. Valves both times set to 0.010" rather than 0.012" factory spec.
Overall, dad's very happy with the decision to install them.
