How Cats Choose Their Favorite Person

  • If you’ve ever lived with cats in a household of multiple people, you may have noticed that cats often tend to prefer a particular person over others.
Believe it or not, there are several behaviors and characteristics that make people appealing to cats. Anyone who meets these certain criteria is likelier to receive a cat’s affection.
In this video, we will talk about how cats choose their favorite human and how you can become your cat’s favorite person.
    Handling
Handling is key to earning a feline’s admiration and respect.
Cats want to remain in control of their environment. This means that being cornered and scooped up without request can agitate a cat.
This is why many cats will gravitate more toward people who don’t like cats, or who are allergic to cats.
The best way of winning a cat’s affections is to not insist they interact with you. Instead, encourage your pet to want the contact. Don’t hug, pick up, or corner your feline friend against their will. It’s best to let the cat make the first move.
    Communication
Studies have shown that any person who can understand and respond to a cat’s cues, whether purrs, meows, or physical touch, is likelier to receive feline affection.
This means understanding when a cat wants attention and when they want to be left alone. It also means feeding them quickly when they want to be fed. Cats want to be understood and have their body and verbal language cues respected.
Cats have a special appreciation for people who can understand their needs.
    Your voice
By default, cats are nervous and afraid of humans.
There are particular behaviors and characteristics that can make people less appealing to cats.
For example, cats find loud noises or sudden movements to be stressful. Cats may even try to avoid people who behave in ways that are impulsive, frightening or distressing to them. This explains why many cats avoid unpredictable children, and why they enjoy the company of elderly people. Kids are distressing to cats because they make loud noises and sudden moves.
If your cat views you as a source of safety rather than disruption, they will be more likely to be drawn to you.
Additionally, a study conducted by Animal Cognition has found that cats know your voice compared to the other voices in your home. If you speak in calm, softer tones, your feline friend will enjoy your vocalization a little more because cats are naturally drawn to the calm of it all.
    Scent and Appearance
For example, a cat may show dislike toward an individual who remind the cat of somebody that mistreated them in the past. This could be due to appearances, such as hats or facial hair, or scents, such as perfume or cologne. It could even be because of certain noises the person makes or even the tone of their voice.
    Quality Time
In addition to being a good communicator, a cat’s favorite human is often the person who puts effort into spending quality time with them. Don’t get this mixed up with the person who spends the most time with the cat. There’s a difference between quantity and quality, and your feline friend knows it well.
That favorite person could be the person who brushes the cat, invites them to nap in their lap, or simply talks to the cat while keeping them engaged in their everyday life. Interestingly enough, a recent study by from Oregon State University discovered that out of human interaction, food, toys, and a scented cloth, cats preferred human interaction the most. So taking 15 minutes every day to twirl the feather wand or toss a catnip mouse is a great way to curry favor with a feline.
    Food
Survival instincts govern animals for a large part of their day, and few things are more important than food. So it should come as no surprise that cats show affection to people who offer food to them. This means the person providing nourishment to a cat will be highly valuable to them and is likely to win their favor, although other factors can foil this.
It is important to remember that although almost all cats will have one favorite person, this does not mean that cats only care about one person. A cat’s signs of affection indicate that they love all members of a household. The cat will just gravitate toward one particular person more than others.
Some cats innately distrust all humans. Oftentimes, such a circumstance applies to feral cats who have never been properly socialized with humans.
To know if you are your cat's favorite human, you'll have to analyze your relationship together as well as how they interact with other people in your household.
When a cat chooses you as a favorite, they will begin to foster a much closer bond. You shouldn't be surprised if they sleep on top of you, follow you around, rub against you, or hang out near you. These are the personal and close behaviors which undoubtedly indicate a cat feels close to you. When they give them to you more than others, it is pretty certain you are their favorite person.

Someone dumped a cat near my property. She chose me and was the best cat I’ve ever had. She was so sweet. She’d snuggle all night like a teddy bear. Her name was Zuku. She even got along with my other two cats. She passed away tragically after a neighbor cat attacked her. She got a deadly infection and passed away. I’ve never cried so much.

dogs are the ADHD pet of pets. They are fun and are great companions but if you don't like that kind of attention a cat is more your thing. Cats are fine being left alone and still capable of communication and the same petting behaviors you can experience with dogs. Just not as overly present as with dogs.

My husband and I thought the same. We were dog lovers. Have two when my husband rescued a cat from a construction dump. She was just a kitten about to be crushed under a weight thing they drive up on. They searched for mom and more kittens but found none. Brought her home and we kept her in a bedroom my husband uses as a office so he was bonding with her. Our big 90 lb dog laid outside the door and she pawed at him under the door. This went on for a few days. He laid there all the time. Our little dog took interest too. We would bring her out and let them smell her. He would hold her. One day she flew out of the room and we freaked out. She went right to our big dog and he just let her climb on him and lay with him. She’s been her almost a year now. They are all buddies. Especially our big dog and the cat. They sleep together.

I reluctantly adopted a Siamese cat that my wife had before we met. When we got married, the cat came as a package deal. I tolerated and even ignored this cat at first, but one day she came up to me and looked into my eyes and purred deeply. She broke the ice and chose the moment to make her move. That moment began the closest relationship I ever had with a pet. This cat latched on to me, much to my wife’s dismay. This cat would greet me at the door when I got home every time and would not accept a patronizing hello. If I didn’t authentically give her a warm greeting, there would be backlash. Every time I sat, this cat would jump into my lap. She would sleep against me every night.
She died a few years ago at the age of 18 and a half. I still miss her. She was my pet flame, and there will be none like her ever again. I would say that when a cat chooses you, you are forever changed. This is something that cannot be forced. You are their world and reason for being when a cat chooses you. Don’t take it for granted.

It is still a mystery for me why I was the favorite human of my first cat. You see, my family had him before I was born, and he was not the biggest fan of anyone of them (or humans in general), but the moment I was brought home from hospital where I was delivered - I was his and he was mine.
He slept with me, followed me everywhere the moment I started moving around by myself and was the first one to comfort me when crying. He was that strong, halfway feral, scarred from fights, incredible hunter type of cat. Each summer my family moved to countryside to live in our village home, and the most incredible thing is that after some time no dog attempted to bark at me. My cat was fast to pick a fight, and he literally trained all dogs in the village that the moment I get scared - they’re FUCKED.
That’s why it’s a mystery - I was a new born, than a toddler, etc., I was loud, I was not feeding/petting him (every now and then I had dead mice in my bed so it was HIM feeding me), he never saw a newborn before me; the only thing I was doing is forcing him every day to pretend he is playing with me (any time I could grab him and place near my toys, and he calmly sat there with me for HOURS, watching me play and responding with meows to me talking to him). I could call him by name any time and he was rushing to me (in his place I would rush away FROM me, but who am I to judge).
I still miss him sometimes, although he is long gone.

@@alvodin6197 I believe it. My family had Jill, a scraggly calico. 😅 She would sit at the foot of my bed when I was around 4-8 and stand guard. If my Mom came in, Jill would be like, “She’s resting, what do you WANT?” and watch very anxiously to see what Mom wanted or what she would do. All this despite Mom being Jill’s former person.
She’d wait outside my door when I’d have it shut. She’d wait for me to get home from school. She’d wait for me to wake up so she could curl up next to me and get snuggles before I got out of bed. When I was sick or hurt she’d hardly leave my side.
I was a kind of quiet kid and I knew that I needed to not scare the cat, and I was pretty good at not startling her, so I think that’s part of why it was easier for her to “pick me.” But for whatever reason, she decided to be all Momma Bear about me, even being protective against my human mom! Sometimes it just happens. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I still remember the first cat my family got.
She was a beautiful calico my dad named "Precious". We brought her home in the cardboard carrier and I sat outside of it talking to it (I had to be 3 maybe 4 years old) and stuck my finger by a slat to say hi. She grabbed my finger, pulled it in (kitten claws suck) and nuzzled it repeatedly. Dad opened the box and she slowly walked out, and curled up in my lap. My family said that she picked me as her favorite and I thought it was a cute joke for many many years.
Sadly, nearly 20 years later and her health was on a decline (arthritis in her hind legs among other things) and she had a stroke in the hallway (blind spot we couldn't see from the living room) before dragging herself about ten feet to my bedroom doorway. I saw her and just held her because I knew. I just... knew. That was the moment I also realized that the jokes weren't jokes, I was her favorite human and shared her last moments with us just like I shared her first.
Over 15 years later and I still miss her, every day.

I’ve told this story before, but I love it and it also applies here.
Once I decided to adopt a cat and surprise my fiancé. So off to the shelter I went. I walked in, and it was quite a small place. They had basically just a room for all of the cats to roam and play on all of the cat furniture. The door had a huge glass window that was from hip level to head or top. I had just come in and two other guys about my age also were there. I was wearing a black suit, and they were in more casual shorts and T shirts. I often wondered if that played any role in what happened next. All three of us went into the room at the same time. But instead of the two guys who’d come together standing next to each other, I was centered. This is when my cat, Oscar, saw me and went nearly berserk! He completely ignored the two guys and came directly for me. He was extremely vocal, and loud! Even as they left, and I had clearly been adopted by him, as I walked out of the room, he gave chase and pawed at the door all the while still meowing as loud as he could, and he could sing!! So the worker there says, “Well, it looks like you’ve been chosen!” And so I was. All these years since I have wondered what exactly made him react that way. And I guess many of these cues answer that. Such a proud moment! I was the chosen one!!

I was amazed that she accepted a light stroke along her flanks and in awe when she leaned into a bit of rubbing along her neck. She likes a little brushing too. Now it is part of the daily routine. About a year and a half ago, I went to this one shelter to adopt a cat (and I had my mom with me). Fifteen minutes into the search, I spotted this one cat hiding inside a stuffed igloo, and all I could see were his two black ears sticking out of the hole. I asked who he was, but the woman who was there with us said he wasn't up for adoption. So I started to move on, and then a minute later, my mom exclaimed, "Honey, you've got to look at this cat!" I turned and saw this big, sleek, BEAUTIFUL cat approaching us, and he was looking directly at me. He followed us into the next room, and when we sat down, he started sniffing out my mom. Then my mom told him, "No, no, no - go see Phoenix!" So the cat walked to me... and curled up in my lap! My jaw DROPPED when he did that, more so when he started purring. My mom smiled, looked at me, and said, "I think you just found your cat."
More like he found ME! LOL
As if that wasn't crazy enough, I managed to convince the lady at the shelter that I wanted to adopt him. So while my mom went to get the cat carrier, I started signing adoption papers. A minute later, my mom walked back inside with the carrier... and then exclaimed, "Oh, my God, he just jumped right in!!!!" I knew right away that he was truly mine - and he wasn't going anywhere!
I later named him Romeo, after the character who fell in love at first sight. To this day, we're still the best of buds... and while I spoil him with treats, he spoils me with cuddles! I can never stress enough just how lucky and happy I am to have him in my life. Love you, Romeo!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

The more you consistent in this approach, the more your cat becomes ADDICTED TO YOU.
Then your problem will be the opposite: your cat will follow you everywhere, show separation anxiety, and even hiss at ppl talking loud and nervous in your presence.
I had a cat that died from sporotrichosis, in his final days he would only eat or drink if I put my hands in the bowl...
Recently I was chosen by a feral cat, that didn't let anyone pet him, that drank dirty water, raw meat and that was used to live under warm parked cars.

      @XxTaiMTxX Před rokem +23

It sort of depends. Most cats are never 100% asleep. They're constantly monitoring their surroundings when asleep, unless they are truly at ease in your household. Being "at ease" means that when you touch them when they sleep, they "jolt awake". You surprised them. They were sleeping very deeply. Completely relaxed. Cats not so deeply sleeping will not react this way when you touch them while they're sleeping. They'll generally open their eyes to see what you want instead.
The cat I used to own would always greet me when I woke her (impulsive child, I was). She'd trill at me, look me over, and then usually want to wash my hair. So, I would sort of snuggle in and let her wash my hair until she got to the "hair pulling" phase of the washing and started hurting me.
I keep this same practice with other cats. A gentle stroke of their ears to let them know I'm there and then sometimes a "snuggle in" to them. I think it makes them feel more at ease since my natural body temperature is fairly high, so I'm very warm and comfy to most cats. Most cats also adopt this practice of simply snuggling into me and then falling asleep on me while I pet them. The only difficult part of that is figuring out when they're just "done being petted" while sleeping and just want my warm hand/arm over them to keep them warm as they do so. Some cats absolutely love my petting them all through their sleep... others "have enough" at some point and will wander off to sleep on their own if I persist too long. It's a lot about just "reading" the cats. Most often, if I see them "wander off" during the petting of them sleeping, I know they've got a limit. So, that limit is "when they fall asleep, hand/arm just rests on them while they doze". If they don't have that limit, then it is "pet until my hand is tired".

Yeah, there was no questions who the favorite human was in my house growing up. Our cat was very loud, early every morning he'd run from room to room yelling at everyone to wake up; then come to my room, make a little noise, and hop onto my bed to sleep in with me for another half-hour or so. Even now, any time I go back home for a visit, he's right beside me as soon as I walk in the door, or just sleeps on my bags if he's tired.

I sometimes pet her since she looks tired to take care of her children at the same time.

Me and my mom sheltered and fed two lovely kittens who were mercilessly left besides the trash can a few months ago, being less than 5 days-old.
One of them grew up to be very sociable and playful, but the other one is quite avoidant and shy. The latter only seems to gravitate towards me, i.e. purrs everytime she sees me, responds enthusiastically to my touch and looks and interacts with me in the most adorable way imaginable.
This is something I struggle to undrstand given that I rarely feed her and sometimes even stumble upon her (I'm blind). I assume it somehow comes down to the fact that my lack of vision makes me more physically passive towards cats and thus she sees me as a safer person to be around, given that I never know where she is, it's always her who approaches me.

After a month I decided to adopt again. Our local cat cafe had this beautiful tuxedo cat named Brodie. He was a former feral cat and needed someone to give him time to be the cat he needs to be. My Fiesta was telling me to adopt him, so after three days of deciding on January 8, 2021 he found his furever home with me.
After a month he started to get used to me and before you know it he's my love bug. I'm very proud of him and the process he's made. Ty Fiesta and keep watch over us. RIP.

One thing I found that is sharing a bed with cats and typically just providing them with the same area of closeness with them is a great way to grow a bond. I literally have a scratched up chair that I set beside my own while playing video games so that if a cat wants to sit next to me, she can. I've got a cat by the name of Daisy. She's the most important thing in life to me. I've had her for 8 years, I'm not sure when, but she became attached to me during that period of time. I helped raise her entire litter, and out of all the cats I helped raise, she was the one that stuck by me. Maybe it was the calm demeanor in which I spent most of my time nearby and silent, or maybe it was the joy I had when spending time with friends online. But no matter what she was always climbing into my lap, or laying right by my side for when I got stressed. She sleeps by my side even on the hottest nights in summer, and snuggles up under my blanket in winter. I've even gotten her to know a couple hand motions and words naturally without any real training. She's truly the only thing in life that I feel actually loves me. But that's okay, cause I cherish and treasure each moment with her, I love to gaze into the steely blue eyes she has, and to hear her crackly meow when I get home from a long day. She's always excited and eager for attention. I'm glad that I've been given the chance to have a true companion, one that can love me just as much as I love her.

When I do the dishes she lays by my feet waiting for me to be done, when we sleep she is either on my chest or next to me on the bed. right now I'm at my desk and she's sleeping next to me. My bedroom window leads to a bench that she can hop down onto and go outside. she is an outdoor/indoor cat, so she always has access to outside. We have two cats at home. Brother and sister, 2 years old now. My family more naturally gravitated toward the girl, as she enjoys laying on your lap (though generally only for a short period, before she runs off again). Meanwhile the boy is not generally keen on sitting on your lap, but he is very affectionate in terms of wanting to rub against you and enjoying pettings so long as he can be anywhere other than your lap. He'll also happily follow you around, and even tends to listen to some "commands" like a dog would, when you call him over. Family didn't enjoy that a lot, saw the boy as "not affectionate since he won't sit on our lap", so I particularly paid a lot of attention to him (though I love both of these precious furballs a lot!). For so long now, my family is always baffled about what a close bond me and the boy share, and how he seems to naturally gravitate toward me most of all. But to me, it was only a matter of understanding and respecting his boundaries, and realizing that he too, was very effectionate, albeit in his own way. Then one day he suddenly jumped on my lap and decided to sleep there for hours. It felt like pure magic. It felt like the highest honour. He's still not much of a lap cat, don't think he'll ever be, so moments like that always feel magical with him. Meanwhile my family also learned to appreciate him more, and now realizes that he truly is affectionate, just not in the same way as his sister.

when i was pregnant with my son, we went to a shelter to get a second cat as a companion for our first. there were so many cute kittens, and my husband was really enamored with this little playful one-eyed boy that another family was also looking at. i was looking in another cage and saw this little sweet boy near the back laying in a way to hide his sister behind him who was utterly terrified. i looked away for a moment and the next thing i knew i had a tiny purring creature on my chest! the little kitten's terrified sister leapt out of her cage (all of the doors were open while our family, the other family, and the worker were in there so we could pet the kittens and hold them etc) and grabbed onto me and would not let go.
the worker was so shocked, and said that the kitten was terrified of everyone and everything, and had never responded like that before. i, of course, started to cry about it. i was like two months pregnant and basically 50% nausea and 50% emotions. i was worried i was going to have to fight to adopt her, since my husband liked the other kitten so much, but i guess my crying convinced him real quick since he only tried one time to get the other. it was a struggle to get her into a crate because she didn't want to leave me (or be touched by anyone else), and she's been stuck to me like glue for almost fourteen years now. she's much less scared of people and things, and even vaguely tolerates our dog! she'll cuddle with my son for about three minutes, which is a million times better than she was in our first few years together when he was a baby/toddler. she's so so chatty, and if i'm around she's purring the whole time. i call her my little purr box, and my barnacle, and my tripping hazard. she's my little baby and i love her so so much.
my other cat, who i also adore, chose my son as his favorite, and he's got that boy wrapped around his little paw 100%. he just has to do his cute little murr-urr-ooww and that kid has the brush out faster than you can say "where's the brush" XD the only time he ever comes to me anymore is when he's hungry, thirsty, or the boy's bedroom door is closed and he wants in LOL

This tells me a little more about how I observe my niece and mother's relationship with our cat Lily. She came from a stray mother. Very feisty as we learned she was fighting off larger cats to protect her brother from a foster's home. In the beginning she wasn't too friendly. However within a day my niece had no problem getting her trust. Since my niece was home with her everyday so she gravitated to her. But as she started growing she'd gravitate to my mother. What I learned when I was visiting for several months and watching her grow over that time (I went for a Spring visit then ended up there until Fall). This would be my first time seeing her as growing kitten. Because she had grown since they picked her up in May. She'd get my mother up at dawn to feed her. She'd look for my niece for playtime, but she'd go to my mother to get everyone up. My learned immediately that there was always a reason why she'd call. It was either food, litter box or everyone should be up to keep her company. My mother knew that whatever she was calling about it had to be one of several requests. If it wasn't one it had to be the other. I voluntarily would clean her litterbox, and she'd make a game out of it. But as she started getting bigger, she'd have her schedule set. Get mom at dawn, tell mom to get everyone up. Go scratch the scratching post like an alarm clock in my niece's room. Check the birds around 7am, which would somehow make me wake up as I'd be up and getting ready for work (as I'd commute from mom's. I live in NJ, work in NYC. Mom also lives and works in NYC). She would continue to watch for my niece to wake up as she wanted her to be up to spend time. If my mom leaves out, she'll start calling for someone to get up. But at night when mom comes home, she'll spend time with mom and stay in mom's room. She almost never sleeps in my niece's room unless a reason to. And that's if no one is in the other room. If my mother is home she'll stay the night with her. We learned that all of us play different roles in her life as she seems to call the shots. Even though she might spend more comfy time with my mother at certain times or rely on her to set the tone, she prefers my niece to play with her even though my niece thinks she's not preferred despite her stalking, play biting and smacking her. They run through the house, stalk each other, hide n' seek. I can see who the favorite is. Me I'm just the fill in but she knows I'm part of the house. She knows I can get her to play hard to tire her out. When she was tossing teeth at me when I would pet her I got her to think twice from sound of my voice. Since then she's grab my arm but she'll think twice about her teeth and then lick. Then we all have fun.
