NARROWBOAT Living - BREATHE IN, that’s TIGHT! Marsworth to Aylesbury! Ep64

- This week’s video sees us cruising our floating NARROWBOAT home from Marsworth Junction through to Aylesbury. We start the blog with some drone footage of Marsworth Junction, then we say our goodbyes to Nikki, before starting the descent on the Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union canal. There are a total of 16 locks on this canal, and this was filmed in September when the weather was very hot, so it was pretty tough going at times! Unfortunately for us, whoever had gone down the Arm before us, had left most of the bottom gates open and the paddles up!! This was frustrating, as we then had to close the gates and paddles before we could reset each lock, and being as it was so hot and we couldnt find a mooring, we did get a little fed up. So apologies if we moaned a bit, it was just one of those days! 🫠 This canal is so so pretty and has lovely views, however, it is a bit forgotten and lacks basic maintenance in places. At one particular point, just after lock 13, the canal narrows so much, that we thought we were going the wrong way! 🤣 It looked more like we were cruising down a watery ditch! 🫣 But it was well worth the visit, a little challenging at times, but we’re so glad we did it! We make our way through the single locks until we reach the Aylesbury Basin visitor moorings, an absolutely beautiful place.
At the end, we tell you about an extra vlog that will be out in a couple of day’s time, where we take a short break away from the boat, a trip of a lifetime to Memphis….. but rest assured, next Thursday’s regular vlog will go out as usual 😘
Hope you enjoy this video! 😃

Hi guys Oh My Goodness I had visions of Martin up to his waist pulling the boat with a rope like Humphrey Bogart in the Africa queen. I hope those people who were leaving the locks open on the other end watch this video and get the message. Again such beautiful scenery that changes every day you are both so lucky and good on you for living your dreams. Stay safe and I'll find another episode to binge watch. 👍🏻👍🏻
Lol Geoff, we really thought we had gone the wrong way as it felt as though we were just in a watery ditch! So pleased you are enjoying our videos! Thanks Geoff! xx
Uh-oh! Martin, that beautiful little kitty clearly chose you to be her/his human! You guys need to go back and bring her home with you! 😄 And, you are going to faint from the heat if you keep wearing that fleece vest when it's 30 degrees outside. You were making me sweat just watching you! I think that boater you guys were following really had no clue how to set the locks properly. It's too bad you weren't able to catch up and give them the education they obviously needed. Thank you for another great vlog, and cheers to you both!
Hi Chris! Aww that little kitty belonged to another boater, but he just kept following Martin lol, he was a little cutie xx Yes, I was so so hot that day, wearing shorts and a vest top, yet Martin kept that fleece gilet on, very strange, as he usually feels the heat more, although when he’s inside the locks it is quite cool, whereas I was in full sun whilst working the locks lol 😂 Thank you so much for your lovely comment as usual, we really appreciate it xx
Thank you for sharing your adventure! Thank you for taking me along. Cheers!
Thanks Dan, it’s lovely to see your comment each week, we really appreciate it! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB You're very welcome!
After that scary Video I think you deserve your holiday of a lifetime. Looking forward to jointing you. Have a lovely time.
Hi Kath, thank you so much! xx
Oh! You had the best trip ever. ELVIS PRESLEY. My room as a teenager was all Elvis posters, Elvis magezines with Presilla & Lisa Marie. I watch all the movies. His music I adore.
Oh yes! I’ve loved Elvis since I was a little girl, he was and still is my first love! Before we moved onto the boat, I had an Elvis room in our bungalow, with all my memorabilia that I’d collected over the years, but sadly had to part with it all when we got the boat. Our trip to Memphis was a gift from my old boss when I left work, it was amazing, I never thought I’d ever get to see Graceland, it really was a dream come true! Have you been Terry? xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Never got a chance to see. I've gotten all kinds of photos of Graceland. His funeral and millions of admires that showed up for it. I too no longer have my Elvis things. I've moved so much my first marriage and it got left behind. My wedding dress & Vail also.
Oh that’s such a shame, hopefully one day you will get to go to Graceland, you really feel his presence, it was quite overwhelming, I spent the whole time walking around the mansion with tears rolling down my face! xx
I'm watching this from Australia where I now live. I used to live in a village outside Aylesbury so am very familiar with this stretch. Making me feel very nostalgic ❤
Oh wow, watching from Australia, thank you! Aylesbury is a lovely area, we thoroughly enjoyed it! Thanks Katie! xx
❤ Paul & Ailsa like it 😊
Aww thank you, lovely to have you with us xx
Wow bless you what a canal. Very beautiful but CRT need to pull their finger out on that one especially when the charges go up for CC. You did so well and how annoying with someone leaving all the paddles up, oh my word. Thanks for vlogging this canal as you say there are many we need to keep using or we will loose them. Looking forward to seeing pics of your amazing trip to see the King, take care both 😊😊❤❤❤
Aww thanks Jacqui xx Yes, I don’t know who it was leaving the gates and paddles open, but it really was getting on my wick lol 😜 The canal itself is beautiful, lots of planes overhead, but apart from that, it was so quiet! We moored up for a few days and didn’t see another boat go past. Hope you’re both keeping well, and of course your furry friend 🐾 xx
Great video Julie & Martin. Hope you enjoyed your holiday in Memphis 🇺🇸 xx 😋
Thanks Carol, we did, we had a great time! xx
Thank you very much for sharing take care
Aww you’re welcome, thank you too! xx
I am the captain of a large ocean-going Cape Size vessel measuring 298 meters long and 45 meters wide. It would be interesting to walk around in your the best Lady! Nice video I'll collect on HDD.
Thank you so much for your comment, wow, couldn’t imagine driving a vessel that big! So pleased you enjoyed our video, thank you! xx
Wow have fun!
Thanks Marion! xx
27:43 she really is a stunning ship
Aww thank you so much, Martin does try to keep her looking nice, and it’s so nice to receive compliments like this, thank you! xx
so much nicer to watch with no background muzak
Aww thank you Shelley xx
Great vlog Julie & Martin, We've just joined you. Stay safe
Aww thank you so much, lovely to have you with us! xx
Hope u enjoy ur holiday xx
Aww thanks Cherry xx
That overgrown part was ridiculous wasn't it, such a shame that its not all been cut back, I thought you'd gone the wrong way when I first saw it 🤣😊
Hiya! You’re not kidding, we quickly checked the map lol. We had just gone past a winding hole and suddenly thought, oh no, should we have turned round there! But no, that was the canal, it was a bit daunting, as it was just like going down a watery ditch! 🫣🤪 Hope you’re both well 🥰 We’re playing catch up on vlogs this week, we’ve had a lot on lol, hoping to catch up on yours! 👍😃 xx
Great video guys, thanks for the comment and like over on my channel, love the slow burn into your latest instalment … ❤ … be safe.
Thanks Nigel, and you’re welcome 👍 xx
oh I felt for you watching this! the people who were leaving the locks open need to have their wrists slapped! Also, I'd never heard of the Silver Prop Challenge.. interesting! :)
Aww thank you, yes it really was quite frustrating, having to close the gates and the paddles before having to reset each lock, we never found out who it was lol. But the canal is so beautiful, I do hope people keep using it, otherwise it could get lost. Lol, the Silver Propeller Challenge is something all boaters can do, it’s difficult to explain, but if you search it online they’ll explain it better than me lol 😂 Thank you so much for commenting, we really appreciate it! xx
I am surprised they don’t post something on how the canal narrows so. What a ride. Good job .
Yes, it certainly was a shock to us, we literally thought we’d gone the wrong way lol, thankfully it didn’t last too long! Thank you so much for commenting, we really appreciate it xx
What a day you had. Disgrace that CRT cant maintain their waterways better., considerning it keeps going up in cost. Well done you two for keeping calm. Love the Kitten and hate the rain.
Thanks Tessa, I do hope we didn’t come across as moaning, it was just one of those days lol. It was challenging in places, but well worth it when we got to the basin, thanks again! xx
I hope you had a wonderful trip to Memphis - only about an hour drive from me!
Hi Ann, we had an amazing time, we absolutely loved Memphis! Thank you! xx
Wow that had a few worrying sections, CRT definitely need to do some clearing, I'm not saying they have to make it perfect, nature likes it a bit rough but you have to be able to get a boat down it and what would have happened if you met another boat coming the other way, yet again another great vlog, take care guys 👍👍
Hi Nigel, yes it was a bit challenging lol, we reported it to CRT but don’t think it’s a priority unfortunately. Apparently according to locals, it gets worse every year 🤷♀️ We also now know why we felt uncomfortable at that mooring spot, apparently that was where the CRT volunteer was murdered by a boater!!! (this may be why they are reluctant to maintain that canal 🤷♀️) Thank you so much for watching and commenting, we really appreciate it xx
When we left we met two boats in the narrow bit !!! Luckily Chick A Dee is maneuverable and we backed up and sorted the problem.
Hi Nigel, hope you and Sheree are both ok! Crikey, couldn’t imagine meeting another boat in that narrow section, you did well to reverse! Was lovely meeting and chatting with you both, we both were hoping you’d still be there when we got back from the shops that day, but understood that you had to move. Hope we get to meet again soon xx
So many good byes 😂❤ that certainly was an unkempt part of the system, sadly those that don't get used get forgotten about bit if we don't use them we will loose them 🙄 unlucky with the wasps 🐝 that looked a peaceful mooring.sorry ot was such hard work for you l. Beautiful video as always❤ stay safe ❤
Yes, we seem to have a habit of saying goodbye lol. We did really enjoy the Aylesbury Arm, we just had a few challenges along the way lol 😂
You stay safe too matey! xx 😘
Great fun in Graceland, hope you had the best time! Weather should have been nice..fingers crossed. Another great vlog! Safe travels till next time. 🥰
Hiya! Yes, we had a fantastic time! The weather was in the 90s° so it was lovely! Memphis is an amazing place, we loved it! Thank you so much for your lovely comment! xx
Maybe a vlog giving us some tips on how to keep our boats as well maintained am seriously curious how he does it . Ask him please
Definitely! That’s a great idea, I’ll see if we can get Martin to show us in one of the next few videos! Thanks David! xx 👍
Inconsiderate a...hole's. Definitely won't be doing that & the CRT are going to fleece the ones who use the canals, they should be ashamed. Anyway my rant over, you're always a good watch.
Yes, we hear you Michael, we hear you! Too true! Doesn’t seem fair at all 😏 Thank you so much, so pleased that you enjoy our videos xx
Well done Julie great vlog and great to see your very shiny boat in the sunshine. Were off our boat now winter is coming fast we might have a quick trip up the Llangollen later this month.
Aww thank you so much! Martin does do a good job keeping the boat nice 👍 Yes, winter is definitely upon us, getting quite cold in the evenings! Take care both xx 😘
I'm surprised you didn't try the three locks at Soulbury near Leighton Buzzard.
Hi Steve, we did do the 3 Locks in last week’s vlog, this one was just the Aylesbury Arm. Thanks! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Yes you did...I backtracked and I apologise.
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Yes you did...I backtracked and I apologise.
@@stephenhughes4943 hi Steve, absolutely no need to apologise! 🥰 we thought perhaps you hadn’t seen the one from last week. We’re only too pleased that you are watching and hopefully enjoying our videos, so thank you! xx
What a mess!!! Is someone responsible for care and maintenance?
Hi Sandra, yes it’s the C&RT (canal & river trust) apparently it gets like this most summers and then dies back in the Autumn and Winter, but it certainly took us by surprise! Thanks Sandra! xx
You have the right to cut it back so you don’t damage your property you have a saw
Hi Diane, we don’t have anything like a saw, or that would cut through that much reed growth lol. Thankfully it was only that narrow for about a mile, we were just taken by surprise at just how overgrown it was. The canal is so beautiful though. Thank you so much for commenting, we really appreciate it xx
Which canal was this ?
Hiya, this was the Aylesbury Arm, off of the Grand Union canal. Apparently it’s like this every summer and dies back in the winter. We hadn’t been warned about it, so we really thought we were going the wrong way lol. Thank you! xx
Pet cat???
Hi Julie! No lol, he belonged to a boat moored further down from us, but seemed to take a shine to Martin xx
