  • Thanks for dropping by the StormRider channel. In this video I take you through a story about charging my G-Shock GWG-1000 MUDMASTER via tough solar. The video has two parts or elements, Part A is about the charging of the watch from ‘low’ battery indicator warning to ‘medium’ battery charge and then to ‘high’ battery charge. Part B talks about the effect of charging the tough solar in direct sunlight. It explains what the CASIO manual advised for charting the 5463 module used by the G-Shock GWG-1000 Mudmaster. Something strange happened when I did this and I thought I had broken the watch, but it turned out to be something much more interesting. I then recreated the issue again just for you loyal viewers, I hope you find it interesting. Please like and subscribe, it is much appreciated.

Thanks for the kind words man, I try to make videos people find interesting. I'm not sure if there is a Rangeman with heart rate monitor, although there are some G-Shocks now with the heart rate monitor. The Mudmaster is a great watch if you are pretty active and your watches get some hard wear. It's pretty big and heavy. The Rangeman GW-9400 is a great option if you want something a bit lighter.

When it comes to knowing about the other side to G-Shocks, you’re there, and this video was a hammer of content :) They can take a deal of heat, and leaving it in direct sunlight isn’t recommended because of burning yourself, also the sun does love to fade colours and dry out resins.... really good to see how the LCD performs in heat, and how the module goes into safe mode when around 60c
As for long term damage there isn’t any, as you have to think when the circuit board was made, it was flow soldered and that’s around 80c maybe more.
The only side that isn’t good with the watch overheating, is the silicon oils used inside, on the gears and especially around where the gasket are.
Charged quickly from ‘L’ which was very impressive, but then it does have virtually the whole dial as a solar panel ;)
Over 900 subs my friend, want to see 1000+ very soon ;)

Knowing what it was like first time. I really appreciate your willingness to provide this i formation buddy 👏🏻 fair play. What a watch it is 😲 I can’t stop wearing my gwg -1000 1A3, I’ve purchased the black band for it and it looks so good with it. I was a bit annoyed with a certain video on CZcams recently wheee the top 10 g shocks were listed and I had to reply to the creator with disapproval that our watch was not in the list of 10, unbelievable! It’s definitely 2nd IMO with arguably the rangeman in first spot with it’s GPS capability and tracking. Just to give you an update with how the training is going, My eating is really good right now, my body shape has improved so much and I’ve dropped 2stone since I last messaged you, it’s been tough but good, I get lazy days as I work shift and motivation really is difficult a lot of the time as shiftwork and nights effect me. Having my 7year old boy stay with me every week is hard going but so good to have him stay. I need to get to the gym to push on as I’m not pushing myself hard enough I know I’m not.. I could press my slef more to start HIIT training when the weather is permitting as room in the house is very limited. It’s maybe excuses but I’m hammering press-ups and sit ups on a daily basis which helps a lot with the lack of gym time due to Covid and the lack of space I have.

I just had a similar issue on my Rangemaster and Citizen Promaster during Christmas. My problem was a bit differan though. Sitting on the window sill (even inside) in a Canadian winter caused the watch to get below recomended temperature plus with only about 7-8 hours of sun during the day it took both watches about 2-3 weeks to get to full charge again. Lets just say all my solar watches are now store in a watch display case with glass so they always have some exposure to light.

When the watch arrived it had low power and once I set it up it had dipped below low and the hands ended up at 1158. No lad display. I wasn't happy after spending £ 300 on a watch. Eventually realised it was the battery and mine did exactly the same as yours. It seems a very similar module with a lot of similar features. For a couple of days the watch stopped at random times. A slight tap on the case brought the hands back to life. This then stopped and the watch has been perfect since. 🥰

I wanted to share with you my experience and hope you could help me into the right direction, My GWG 1000 has shut down completely and wont start, the only thing i get is the blinking sign " CHARGE " and after a while goes away even when i put it towards direct sun light or under LED light for hours on end, 3 days straight even and it still does the same thing and wont start up.
Does this mean the watch is broken and need technical help ?

I've been a subscriber for a few months - seems to me this Mudmaster is your favourite G - your 'right hand man'.
I really like the build quality, compared to the new carbon core version.
What are you planning on picking up next? I have tried the MTGS1000 & can recommend this model as it slips under sleeves and has a very attractive dial. I think you should treat yourself to an MTG or MRG - the latter I doubt I'll ever own, as the outlay is to steep for me. I really enjoy your informative videos, thanks.

Thanks so much for the comment man. Interesting you mention the MTG S1000, I had the opportunity to buy one at a good price a while back and probably should have went for it. It's a cool looking watch and so much tech wrapped into it. I think the GWG-1000 is definitely in my top 5 but it's very situation dependent. For example, out and about smart casual I'll go GA-2100, wearing a suit Metal square, bike ride GW-9400 Rangeman, swimming G9300 Mudman. GWG for camping and tough outdoor workout. I have my eye on a very specoorc MR-G, they are beautiful and really hope one day I get the opportunity at the right price and the stars align. Cheers!

Thanks for the reply. I regret I passed on a new Mudman a few years ago for approx £100 new. Also I've some additional regrets, over choosing a GPW1000 over the GWG - this was a difficult decision at the time (3 yrs ago) - they were the same price.
My life isn't as active as yours - I use a GMW5610 as a daily beater. A GD350 for as a beater when the vibe alarm is required. The GPW is on my wrist most of the remaining time - but I never use the GPS to sync the time - as atomic is reliable & a temp function would be useful instead.
I've no plans to pickup anymore 'pieces' for a while - though the metal square w/resin band you have is v.tempting - but then there's the problem of having too many Gs and don't want to pickup something that gets little, to no use. Sorry for rambling. Thanks again.

To avoid overheating in hot summer light you need a towel soaked with cold water and a white kitchen plate. Roll up the wet towel to the size of the bracelet, put the watch around the towel and align its face to the sun on the plate to recharge. The water in the towel will evaporate and keep the watch from overheating. The plate is just there to keep the window sill dry. Keep at least 8 inches (20 cm) distance to the window and you'll be fine. That's how I recharge my Rangeman in summertime.

The biggest killer of solar watches is killing them over time by allowing them to overheat in full sun. i've done several videos on how to avoid this. Over heating as u found out also buggers up the LCD as will below -10C for these guys. The problem is with resin cased watches is that they are not good at conducting away heat (except the newer carbon impregnated PEEK resin models because carbon impregnated PEEK is a better thermal conductor. Use my evaporative cooling method in my vids, u can leave it in full summer sun and should be fine and it will charge very fast.

I should know as I purchased one from a well known UK retailer for £600, my alarm bells rang when I checked out the lume which as you know it’s very bright on these watches especially on the dark green band variant, the lume was basically none existent, just a very faint glow on the hour and minutes hands.
The middle dial crown only moved the hour and minutes hands, the digital display was just day, date stopwatch and alarm.
The light was very poor quality, the button recessed too far which made operation too uncomfortable, BARO and TEMP dial never moved it was fixed in place.
It was a very good looking fake probably the best I’ve ever seen but none the less it was still fake.
I think what had happened was a previous customer purchased an original GWG 1000 then sent fake GWG 1000 back for a full refund and keep the original GWG 1000, it was that good of a fake return inspections where none the wiser.
If you was interested I could send you the images of the fake GWG 1000 compared to my original and still the very best GWG 1000.
      No worries if not,
      Keep up the good work.

@@stormrider1119 I actually use a full spectrum LED grow light to charge my solar watches in the hot summer when the sun is too intense. It has the same Lux as the sun on an overcast day, uses very little electricity and is
cold light because it is from an LED

Pays to consult the manual. Could have been a disaster.
