Pentatonix is the Acapella group that started this genres popularity. They have 3 Grammys. Their Christmas albums regularly hit the billboards top 100. They have recently been nominated for another Grammy, and next year will receive their star on the Walk of Fame. They also have numerous cameos.

Pentatonix and Home Free band members know each other well. Pentatonix competed on a televised singing competition called the Sing Off during season 3 and won. (about 11 years ago) Home Free competed in season 4 and won. Pentatonix (PTX) came back during season 4 to perform and they mentored Home Free. If you journey down the PTX rabbit hole, and I hope you do, you will find they have an even bigger portfolio. Pentatonix has won 3 Grammy Awards and they have been nominated for a 4th. Pentatonix leans more pop rather than country (but they have done at least one country song and won a Grammy for it) and they do both covers and originals. They are famous for their wall of sound. Their performance of Hallelujah is a great place to start. The video has over 691 million views. The Daft Punk medley was their first Grammy win, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy their second which has zero lyrics (amazing) and it is a great time to react to it with the holiday around the corner and the third Grammy was a collaboration with Dolly Parton of her hit Jolene. They've an amazing story and journey. They are well known too for their Christmas covers. The Pentatonix fans (a.k.a. Pentaholics) are also passionate about this band and they will support you 100%. Enjoy!!!

    Pentatonix
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
    The founding members are:-
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);

    Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty")Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale);
Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); and
Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; Not in this video!!
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on CZcams, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma.
While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his CZcams videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing".
Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours!
They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on CZcams), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building.
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records.
Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on CZcams, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live.
Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers.
But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label.
They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) was brought in as the new bass singer in early 2018. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group.
After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.
Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes.
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.

Welcome to the wonderful world of PTX! First of all, they use little to no post-production. It's a point of pride with them that there's nothing in their videos that they cannot do live. This IS what they sound like live. They are incredible. I saw them last week in Chicago. 3rd row center!
Members - going left to right in this video. Matt is the bass and their newest member. They're old bass singer left for family reasons, you'll see him in other videos and his name is Avi (pronouced Ah - vie). Then the chick is Kirstin. In the middle is Scott, the heart of the group. Beside him is Mitch. You didn't get to hear just what Mitch can do with that voice of his in this. He is AMAZING and he will take your breath away at times. We - the Pentaholics - call it being Mitch-slapped. You'll love a good Mitch-slap. Lastly, but DEFINITELY not least is Kevin, one of the single best beatboxers out there. He can also sing and play the cello. Scott, Kirstin and Mitch have been singing together since they were in high school. After acquiring Avi and Kevin they won the Sing Off and have been unstoppable since.
Home Free is good, don't get me wrong, but PTX is THE acapella group. They are the first, and so far only, acapella group to win a grammy. Their newest album has just been nominated for what might end up being their fourth.
You HAVE to see their video of 'Daft Punk'. It's what earned them their first grammy. Others you CANNOT miss are their covers of 'Gold' by Kiiara, 'Imagine' by John Lennon, 'Radioactive' by Imagin Dragons (with Lindsey Stirling), 'Can't Hold Us' by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, 'The Prayer' originally sung by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli, and their original song 'Sing'. That will get you started, but this rabbit hole goes all the way down.

@@AnjeannetteMarie-Swifie4Ever They really are. I have such a huge respect for them as people as well as musicians. You know, they never perform on Friday nights? It's because Kevin is a Seventh Day Adventist, and they observe the same sabbath as the Jewish people. So, sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday. When they first got going he offered to find them another beatboxer because he didn't want to hold them back. But the others got together talked about it and decided they'd rather have him. So, they never perform Friday nights. That loses them shit ton of money, but Kevin is more important to them than that money. They really are just good people.

Awesome reaction, and I'm so happy you loved it! You should also check out these other Pentatonix videos, which are also amazing. Their catalog is never ending, and you will enjoy this rabbit hole....they NEVER miss!
Some background: The bass singer, Matt, (in the white coat) joined the group in 2017, and he replaced the original bass singer, Avi Kaplan. The videos linked below also include earlier days, which feature Avi Kaplan, so I just wanted to point it out, as it sometimes confuses folks.
The other 4 members have remained constant....Scott Hoying (tall blonde guy), Mitch Grassi (the guy with the mullet - he changes his look often), Kirstie Maldonado (she changes her hair color often), and Kevin Olusola (the beatboxer).
Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch have been singing together since high school, and they added Kevin and Avi when they competed on the 3rd Season of "The Sing Off" in 2011.
Also - just so you know... whenever the bass singer (Matt or Avi) sings a lead verse, Scott Hoying (tall blonde guy) takes over the bass line until they're done.

Still my standard challenge is to lock at a discography of PTX and choose the song you do not like the original, give it a listen, and choose a song you do not believe anyone could do better than the original and listen, you will become a Pentaholix

Not a big home free fan but they're very talented group as is voiceplay. But those groups owe ptx for a good portion of their careers. Ptx is who brought acapella to the mainstream and gave all other acapella groups a much sturdier platform to sing their craft because thry paved the way for them. Ptx has more views, and much more awards such as 3 grammys and more nomination and many other awards too numerous to list here. To me their on a different level as theres no genre or musical style they cant master. I'll suggest daft punk (the studio version first and thrn thr private performance or same song where there's no microphones or studio mixing. Just them singing and this proves they are that good as so many hear them and doubt t
It's only their voices bc they're that good. And dance of the sugar plum fairy. These are early works they won grammys for and when the original bass was with them. And imagine their cover by John Lennon.

@@demeraragirl oh I'd say back "bring it" bc them fightin' words as my mom used to say. At the end each to their own. But here ptx has way more awards and views and they've sung at 5he academy awards, they've had duets with Stevie wonder, dolly Parton to name a couple. Even Simon cowell loves them. Lol I think haters are jealous of their success eclipsing
      Their group. Oh well. Lol

Welcone to the rabbit hole. Pentatonix won the sing off in 2011 and subsequently impressed everyone so much they became a seriously successful youtube group (label dropped them after winning bc they thought no one would like acapella). Most Pentaholics like Home Free as their videos and talents are entertaining but there is just something about Pentatonix that raises the bar for every other vocalist; could be their grammys, broadway appearances, carnegie performances (beat boxer kevin plays cello and saxophone), their very solid pure voices, maybe just their joy about singing. All these things contribute to ptx and more

I love first time reactions to Pentatonix. They are absolutely huge - their version of Hallelujah has been viewed nearly 700 million times! They have been together since 2011, with only one change in the group - the bass (the guy who looks like Jesus in a beanie in this one!) Avi, who left amicably in 2017 and has been replaced by Matt Sallee, who is also phenomenal. Three members - Scott (tall, blonde), Mitch (high tenor voice in a hat in this one) and Kirstin have been friends since they were 8 years old and sang in high school together. They recruited Kevin (beatboxing, cello and cello boxing, but he also sings!) and Avi to form a group to enter the third season of the a cappella competition 'The Sing Off', which they won. The prize was a Sony record contract but Sony dropped them after a few weeks because they didn't think a cappella would be commercial enough. They decided to go it alone and acquired a huge following on CZcams and later got record contracts and have made several massively selling albums and 200+ songs in their catalogue, all different styles. They are known best for their covers and Christmas songs but their originals are fantastic and much under-rated. They have won three Grammy's and are up for another one for their Christmas album last year, Evergreen. The Grammy's even created a category just for them. They have recently been awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They sell out huge venues around the world (I'm in the UK and am seeing them next May, can't wait!). I'm 53 and I love them, my 24-year-old daughter loves them and my two young nephews love them. They span all ages. As a newbie, I would recommend their Daft Punk Medley, which won them their first Grammy, Bohemian Rhapsody - which Brian May said was one of the best covers of it ever made - wait till you see how they do the guitar solo on that! Also, The Prayer is beautiful. If you're into rap (all the current members can rap) try 'Can't stop us now' - the Macklemore and Ryan Lewis cover or Ariane Grande Problem cover. My favourite original is 'Love again' - if you like EDM, you'll like that one. All of their 'evolution' videos are brilliant too. For Christmas songs, Carol of the bells, Drummer Boy, Oh Come all Ye Faithful, or their new original ones 'Prayers for this world' and 'Kid at Christmas' with Meghan Trainor. You're going to start to have a problem with having their videos blocked, there are ways round that, stop and comment, put wording over the video, make it quite transparent. Pentaholics won't mind as we know the videos very well! There! That's a lot of information, enjoy the rabbit hole!

I recommend you react to Pentatonix "Oh Come All Ye Faithful". It's an African vibe version of the traditional church song. Virtually all Pentaholics are familiar with Home Free. Most consider Pentatonix the more versatile group because they do Opera (The Prayer), rap (Can't Hold Us), electronic music (Daft Punk), Holiday music (7 albums), Gospel (Amazing Grace, Mary Did You Know), golden oldies (Nineties Dance Medley, Evolution of Michael Jackson), contemporary (Shallow), and Pentatonix originals (Sing, Be My Eyes). When reactors start reacting to Pentatonix videos on a regular basis their channel numbers usually increase dramatically. Pentatonix doesn't do covers, they do upgrades.

3 Grammies, and another nomination for Evergreen album, more than 3 billion views on CZcams. Pentatonix has been a real change to the acapella world. Home Free, Voice Play, and many others have seen more streaming and air play due to PTX. They helped on Pitch Perfect and even guest starred in one of the Pitch Perfect movies. We Petaholix are sure that PTX does not do covers, they do upgrades and their originals are beyond belief for being so amazing. And all of the sounds you hear, they do those without effects equipment, With simple voices they can make it sound like reverb, synth, and even insturments with just their voices. If you see them live you will understand the power of these 5 talented people.

Halleluiah has over 600 million views (I think it's the best version I have heard). It has that many views for a reason.
They also did Bohemian Rhapsody with that same line up. A guy called Avi Kaplin left and the group went from 3 white , 1 Latina and 1 black (excellent beat boxer who is the glue for so many tracks they do). To 2 black and 2 white and 1 Latina. I think this version of the sound of silence is better than the original. I can see you will get addicted to Pentatonix.

    Love Pentatonix
    Formed back 2011
    Won multiple awards
Lots of amazing material to choose from
    Some of my favorites are
Thank You- A Christmas song Scott wrote with his now ficeance
    The Prayer
    The Grinch
    Imagine
    Happy Now
    hallelujah
    bohemian rhapsody
    Shallow
    So the members
The original bass- Avi Kaplan left in 2017 on good terms and for personal reasons. He has is own solo career, it’s really good stuff. He does manly indie, folk, country stuff. Some of my favorites from him is Change on the Rise, First Place I Go and Otherside.
Scott Hoying- tall blonde guy, baratone and bass for whenever Matt or Avi sings. He also got engaged to longtime boyfriend Mark Manio early in year and recently released a song called Mars.
Mitch Grassi- counter tenor, don’t really know how to describe him because he changes his looks a lot, he the the white guy
Kirstin Maldonado - the only female of the group, mezzo saprono, earlier in the year welcomed her first child alongside her boyfriend Ben Hausdorff.
Kevin Olusola- also known as K.O singer-songwriter, beatboxer, and cellist. Also In 2021 he and his wife welcomed Kaia Noelle into the world.
Matt Sallee - the newer bass- baritone, also early in the year got married to Sarah Bishop
Sorry for any spelling errors, I am dyslexic and If I miss anything feel free to add on. This just some basic information.

New subscriber, here for all the Pentatonix you care to feature. Love that you loved them! If you’re a Lion King fan, you may want to check out Can You Feel the Love Tonight. A favorite of mine lately has been Problem, although that’s an older song with their original bass singer. There has only been one change in the line-up which came in 2017 (I think) when their first bass singer opted to follow a solo path and Matt joined the crew. A newer one I love is Come Along, and Anchor is a newish original that is fantastic. Their catalogue is vast, with both covers and originals, and, honestly, any title you choose will be good. Welcome to PTX. Peace from Ohio …

Always delighted to find another Pentatonix reactor. Highly recommend any of their live performances. They're just as good as the studio versions and in some cases better, if that's possible. As to my favorite song of theirs, I laughed because it changes from day to day depending on what I last listened to. They are all excellent. Because they can sing all genres, I guess it depends on the type of music you like.
