    Not gonna lie, Avi I think is better served as a solo artist. His talent is unquestionable, but his personality & artistry are better suited to a more niche fandom. Now he has a better grip on his career trajectory, and he can showcase all of his abilities in ways he couldn’t with the group.
    Matt is quite literally A PERFECT FIT with PTX. His addition seemed like the missing puzzle piece, and with him in the lineup they have reached new heights and expanded their skill set & repertoire, in both creative and performative aspects. In my opinion, this was the best case scenario for everyone.

      Me too. I agree with every word. In addition, I believe that Avi is SO much happier now! Not that there was any problem between him and Pentatonix, but the nonstop touring and always being in cities didn't fit with our nature-craving Avi. His tours now are only a few weeks at a time, then a rest period, and plenty of time to spend in the woods and mountains. On the PTX side, Matt has brought in so much joy and energy! He was the perfect choice. And we still have Avi--both his exhilarating solo work and the 8 years of albums and videos with Pentatonix. Win/Win/Win.

    Avi left (apparently amicably) after PTX's 2016-17 tour. The others did some recordings with only four people while auditioning basses and added Matt Sallee on a trial basis for their 2017 Christmas season. Avi and Matt both have music degrees (and both did a capella in college), but it seems that Avi trained to develop his deeper range while Matt trained more to develop his baritone. Avi has said he loved his time with Pentatonix but the constant touring was a strain and he is now doing his own music and appears much happier.

    • @elizabethfelet4743
      @elizabethfelet4743 Před 2 lety +20

      Agree with your assessment. I would like to say that I think that in the early days for Matt, he was more in his baritone range, only because as you point out that is more what he originally trained for. As the years have progessed, he has worked hard on his lower range, and in their newest music he is killing his bass parts. Ben Bram indicated that when Matt came on board, they had to learn to arrange to his voice compared to Avi's voice, which meant that they had to do some thing differently. It's been 5 years now, and I think that Matt is exactly what PTX needed for the direction that they have taken their music.

    • @xheralt
      @xheralt Před 2 lety +4

      @@elizabethfelet4743 Yes. Matt can't go as low as Avi did, not with the same power at least, but he can go higher with ease. I'd dare say his and Scott's range are almost identical, but the tonal quality, which part of their respective voices they're using (chest, head, falsetto, etc.), differs. I've haven't heard the current lineup live, I do wonder how they'd make their older songs fit with Matt.

    In this video you can actually see that Scott is performing the bass line while Matt is singing his solo. Scott did it with Avi in Hallelujah, but the camera never showed Scott during that timeframe in that video.
    Recommendations: Just for something fairly different from what you've already seen: Havana or Attention, Sing (original), Jolene (collab with Dolly Parton, their 3rd Grammy winner), Papaoutai or Radioactive or Over the River (all collabs with Lindsey Stirling, with Kevin cello-boxing).

    • @kayecastleman6353
      @kayecastleman6353 Před 2 lety +1

      I have heard that in the official video of Hallelujah, they added a track with Avi doing the bass line, so it is actually him singing both solo and bass line at the same time. This makes sense to me since, as terrific as Scott's lower range is, he still doesn't quite have that buttery smoothness we know from Avi's voice, and when I listen closely, it really does sound more like Avi doing those bass notes. It would also make sense not to show Scott during that verse if he isn't taking over from Avi, but just doing background and harmonies with the others. I know Scott picks up the bass line when they sing Hallelujah live, but I do believe they decided to use Avi for the official video.

I'm just saying I heard that for the official video of Hallelujah, they were able to use Avi's voice for the bass line while he was singing his solo, so they did. Perhaps they did add more resonance to Scott's voice to give it that fuller timbre, but I wonder why they would bother, if they could easily slip Avi's voice in there. Just an opinion...

    Thank you for distinguishing PTX"s performance of this song as their own beautiful interpretation of the story and the music. A number of other reactors have tried to compare them to Disturbed's version but, like you, I don't think a comparison can be drawn. Technically it's the same song but the voices, the production and the way they make you feel while you listen to the music are so different. One reactor even said that PTX"s version was "almost as good as the original by Disturbed." This guy was apparently unaware that the original was done by Simon and Garfunkel in the 1960's. I enjoyed your reaction very much and hope you will do more PTX. I think you would enjoy Bohemian Rhapsody, I know I would.

Hmm..🤔 I immediately thought, 'I could have Sworn Paul Simon wrote that song in '64, when I was only 6 yrs old, and he & Art Garfunkel were the creators of the "Original" SoS, lol!"😉 My next thought was, 'Man, I'm getting old!'😱😄 Growing up I loved "The Sound of Silence"; both message & music stirred my soul! And when I watched Disturbed's cover about a year ago, I was surprised to find that I really loved it! But there wasn't any real way to compare Simon & Garfunkel's original version with theirs~ both were Awesome in their own right & in their own ways. Same goes for PTX; tho' I have to say that if I Had to choose, I like Pentatonix' cover a little more than Disturbed, as much as I did really like theirs.

    As for where to go next, we'll, there's many possibilities and I could really just list their entire discography lol. But how about for a start something a little different that has Kevin playing cello & beatboxing, "celloboxing" as he calls it, and Lindsey Stirling on violin... on an upgrade of Imagine Dragon's *Radioactive* . Or if you wanted to try something sit down with mics then Ciara's *Gold* or even 21 Pilot's *Ride* .
    They have two albums full of originals that many get overlooked, and they range greatly in vibe, a quick jump in is to watch *Popspring 2016* miniconcert where they perform originals (Cracked, Can't Sleep Love, and Water) as well as their Evolution of Michael Jackson. It's a little longer but people don't usually seem to mind.
    As an aside, I also highly recommend *Superfruit* , which is Mitch & Scott's channel "The Greatest Show on The Internet" as they dubbed it (sadly they haven't uploaded in 3 or so years but there's a whole lot of awesome musical (and other fun) content over there). My fave to see people react to is always *Hip Hop Goes Broadway* 1 & 2 and for a real treat *Feeling Myself* (always wait to see if there are bloopers after the subscribe message lol). Along with various medleys and evolutions, and an albums worth of incredible original music all of which except one have music vids (it's not a capella)
    Also, all except Matt have ventured into solo or other projects. Some examples:
    Avi - Change On A Rise (he has a new album and a an EP that's from a couple years ago of his solo stuff since leaving) ;
    Kevin has his KOvers - Down and Sign of The Times are both phenomenal;
    Scott has a various duets, my fave is Lost On You with Mario Josè (who's on Rise with Superfruit) and his solo stuff like Avicii's Wake Me Up;
    Mitch has some very different solo stuff from the older Graveyard to Billie Eilish's Your Power, to his recent Messer project (verrry different to the Mitch we know) Love Supply and Angel's Pray for example.

      The family health was contributing to Avi's burnout, but it wasn't the reason in and of itself. Avi's sister continued on as PTX's tour manager until she got pregnant in 2019. "Creative issues" were the same... not the issue, but another contribution to burnout. Also not like they were disagreeing, but Avi's heart wasn't in the PTX music lane which made it harder to stick out through the stress. Avi *could* tour and loved the group... but he was worn out by their pace and wanted more room in his life for other things.
      Matt joined for the 2017 Christmas tour, not summer, as a "featured artist". He became official in February 2018 when PTX renewed their contract with RCA.

      @@alan-freeman He didn't even mention his mom's cancer in the announcement. He wanted more time to do other things, as I said. Everyone loves putting so much emphasis on the illness and family, but the guy moved away from his family after quitting to better pursue his solo music. That just wasn't the point. He wanted more time - for family, yes, but also for his music and just to have downtime and breathe. The point is that in 2016 PTX was going so hard that they were dragging a portable recording studio behind their tour busses and working before and after concerts and even on their days off. Avi didn't find that pace sustainable.

      To set Matt's entrance into the PTX timeline, the first video Matt did with PTX after joining the group is their cover of Havana by Camila Cabello. I believe the last one that Avi did with the group was their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody.

    Hello Skultz, thanks for doing this one by PTX. This is Pure Pentatonix Perfection. The solos. The cresceondo. The PTX wall of sound. They are all perfection. Mitch's lower register, with the inflections is just perfect. Avi (pronounced Ah-vee) left in 1028 and was replaced by Matt as the bass. Scott sings baritone and covers the bass backing when Matt is singing, Kirstie is sharp with her belting. Kevin the master beat boxer is beyond compare with the vocal percussion, stomping and clapping. PTX have about 250 songs, several genres, 3 Grammys. There is so much more that you will enjoy. Suggestions for you - The Prayer, Amazing Grace, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Come Along, Gold - for starters. Then they also have great originals. PTX videos are always intentional. Thanks for recognizing so many details. Great reaction!!!

Since you mentioned your curiosity about the mixing of the videos, I thought I'd point you to 2 good interviews with the guy that mixes many Pentatonix videos, as well as some for the other big a capella groups, that were posted by Jacob Restituto. He's also has a really great interview of Ben Bram, who is the 6th member of Pentatonix (arranges their stuff).

    Scott started off Hallelujah, too. Matt and Avi are both amazing. he is the new bass who took Avi’s place. Feels weird calling him new, because he’s been with the group for several years now. I saw PTX in concert and he also played drums at one point. Scott played piano and Kevin played cello. It was nice seeing their other talents. :)

    I'm a Pentaholic at my core, but I'm also rapidly becoming a VoicePlayer, and I have to take exception to your "a capella videos should be minimalistic..." because when VoicePlay go crazy, it's a FABULOUS crazy. I'd like to invite you to review their "Hoist the Colors," or for maximum crazy, either "Dragonborn Comes" or "Enemy" for full-blown theatrics. Well, technically, for FULL-BORE THEATRICS, "The Oogie Boogie Song" goes all out. They also have plenty of "sit in a chair and sing" videos too, to suit your taste, but they love to pull out the costumes.
    Don't get me wrong, as far as I'm concerned, the Pentatonix videos are gorgeous, but even they go costume drama from time to time. And it always works. "Cheerleader," or "My Favorite Things" (which really only has the basic tune/lyrics in common with the Julie Andrews version) or best of all, "Making Christmas." And you've already seen "Daft Punk." For a similar (but very different) vibe, you might look at their original "Love Again." Steampunk. Oof.
    Pentatonix is going to keep you busy for a while as they have an enormous catalog, but the top three a capella groups, in my opinion, are PTX, VoicePlay and Home Free. And since I'm not a Country music fan, Home Free trails, but they have their rabid fan base. Whichever way you go, you're pretty much guaranteed an awesome result.

    I just subscribed because I really enjoyed your PTX reactions - I appreciate your informed comments on everything from their sound to their look to the setting. Although I've seen the videos innumerable times, I like it when someone points out something I've missed! Looking forward to more. As many have said, they have a catalog of over 200 songs and a LOT of them have accompanying videos. Contrasting their style from the early days 2012-2014 to the last couple years, you'll definitely notice a difference in production and styling, however, their overall music is still stellar. With a little searching online you can find many live performances (there's a great one for Daft Punk & Hallelujah) as well as other concert recordings and you'll see their live performances are VERY similar to the studio productions. Fans will say they don't record anything they can't sing live, and though I haven't seen them yet, and all I've seen is concert videos, you can tell that the lives are pretty much the same. Scott often changes his riff or throws a little something in the live to "prove" it's different from the recording. I'll be following your journey.

    I have to say that PTX is my favorite acapella group. That said, while I like this version, and of course they sing it beautifully, I ADORE the Disturbed one. It portrays the rage and urgency that I feel about the subject much better. When it comes to a perfect message from a cover vs an original, PTX's Imagine has the most profound message for me. Matt is the new bass and he's amazing in his own right. He is showcased in a great way by their cover of You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch. So much fun! Kirsten's voice is on point in her/their original Be My Eyes. Avi has gone on to a solo career and is wonderful too.

    I love your PTX reactions and I so appreciate that you have taken the time and care to learn their names. A lot of reactors are still calling them "the blond guy" or "the dude with the high voice" even many videos in to their PTX journeys.
    So many ways to continue! If you want something more upbeat, you can't go wrong with Cheerleader. I smile along with them every time. That one is older and features Avi. Rather Be, Say Something, and Shallow heavily feature Kirstie. For more gorgeous ballads try Amazing Grace or The Prayer. And Bohemian Rhapsody is brilliant and is always a hit! If you want to get into some live stuff I'd recommend starting with the Popspring medley -- that one has some original songs as well as a fun Michael Jackson medley.

    Matt and Avi are two different people. They have two different voices and two different styles. BUT Mat's voice blends perfectly with the group and you cannot tell me otherwise. The sound is different, of course it is, but that does not make it lesser or greater, only different. And I love Matt with them. From what I understand Avi even helped them choose Matt to a degree. I've heard it said that Simon & Garfunkle's version is a warning, Disturbed's version was anger that the warning was ignored, and Pentatonix's version is hopeful that it's not too late. Personally, I think it's the best version of the song since Simon and Garfunkle.
