All tricks are taught with positive reinforcement and clicker training.

Note to viewers: The cage shown briefly in this video is not their cage. They reside in a huge multi-level mansion, though I have them out much of the time.
Additional note: My rats are trained animal actors for media work and so it is crucial that they are able to perform outside and in foreign environments. As a professional wildlife educator and a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, I am well aware of the various wildlife species that inhabit the area. Fortunately, rat-feeding birds (esp. raptors/birds of prey) are very scarce due to my area being an extremely poor food source; of course I still exercise caution and remain vigilant nonetheless. Never once have I witnessed any animal species, birds of prey or other, watching my rats or even being present when they are out.
I would never, ever do anything that could potentially endanger my animals. They are priceless, dearly loved family members and their safety is of paramount importance.

I hate how people are so stereotypical about rats, saying they are diesease ridden, gross, and stupid when really they clean themselfs like cats and are very higenic and they are like the open pages of a book; there are so many pages and personalitys to them, they are so smart and can learn so many things, and so many fun and loving memorys can be made with them :)
Whoever say rats are useless: rats are currently doing a tremendous job at removing land mines in Asia and Africa thus making fields, forests, and savannahs safe for us human beings and other animals. They are light enough to not trigger a bomb, which takes 5 kilos of pressure to explode (a giant rat weights up to 2 kilos) and are smart enough to tell their human co-workers there are bombs where they are standing. New studies also indicated that rats "sang" in rat language. Now tell me what you did today.

I have noticed that the authours of several websites which feature my rats' videos have written that my rats are performing their tricks for peanuts. Not only is this incorrect, but I do not recommend using peanuts as rewards since they are unhealthy for rats when fed in large quantities, being very high in fat and protein. Too much protein in a rat's diet causes kidney damage and skin problems amongst an array of other health issues. When using a certain food as a training reward they will inevitably make up a large portion of the animal's diet, which is why peanuts should not be used as training treats for rats.
For those who are wondering what I do use, I use a variety of different foods as rewards when working with my rats including rolled oats, dried or fresh fruit (their favourites are bananas, blueberries, and grapes), cooked pasta, steamed vegetables, and puffed rice/kamut cereal pieces. I will also purchase fruit or vegetable baby food and offer some on my finger as a reward.
I believe it is the puffed rice/kamut visible in a few of the clips that was misidentified as peanuts by the website authours.

But to fabricate and impart false information about a species for the mere purpose of venting your hatred towards them is a deplorable disservice to the public and, frankly, is a puerile thing to do. Whether you are fond of rats or not, the facts stand - facts that some people, unfortunately, do not wish were the truth.
I find it curious and interesting that you first voice your "concern" for these rodents, stating that this video epitomizes "animal abuse", yet you proceed to viciously attack rats as a species in a vehement, uncultured diatribe couched in foul language, attempting to persuade others into sharing your patent abhorrence for these animals. Pet rats are the most misunderstood animal in America. They are sociable, clean, clever, affectionate, and shockingly clever. I am currently 6 years into a breeding program to determine what-if any- behaviors can be passed on geneticly. So far it seems that how they are raised is much more decisive but I am determined har!

People have no reason to be mad at you after reading your comment, because virtually nothing you have written in it is true. I am utterly flabbergasted that you label the information contained in your comment as "fact". If you are interested in the true facts, allow me to provide them for you and elucidate this topic which you patently have not researched. Even if you are not interested, I will still share them here for others who may happen upon your nonsensical comment.
Firstly, you list hamsters alongside rats as though they are a similar species with homogeneous roles in the ecosystem. In the wild, hamsters are found exclusively in the Eastern Hemisphere and some species, such as the Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus), are rare in the wild. In fact, the species was thought to be extinct prior to the late 1990's until they were discovered during two expeditions conducted in 1997 and 1999. Referring to the species as a pest is absolutely ludicrous, since these elusive and solitary animals are not only uncommon in the wild, but they spend much of their time underground. Any hamsters that you have seen are captive-born animals which were introduced into the pet trade in the year 1937. These pet hamsters are certainly not "pests" since they are not found in the wild.
You question whether humanity needs rats, but in truth it is our planet that does as these rodents have a vital role in the ecosystem as consumers, and some species of rats such as Giant pouched rats have an important role as seed dispersers. They are also a primary food source for many carnivorous species and simply removing these animals you call "pests" from the planet would create a serious imbalance in the ecosystem and it would be deleterious to biodiversity.
Regarding your list of diseases that you claim rats can carry...
Your veracity and credibility was completely lost the moment you listed the bubonic plague. Bubonic plague is transmitted through fleas, not rats. Furthermore, it is only after the animal dies that the fleas become dangerous to other species (such as humans) since, while the animal is alive, the fleas feed off of that animal. Once the host is deceased, the fleas begin searching for a new host to feed from, thus spreading the disease. People are at risk when handling or visiting an area with recently DEAD rats carrying plague-infected fleas, not live rats. A study conducted by French scientist Paul-Louis Simond confirmed that the plague is spread after the infected fleas transfer from rats or other rodents which had died less than 24 hours prior. People residing in China and India have stated that plague outbreaks only occurred after numbers of dead rats were found. The only other way to contract bubonic plague (although extremely rare) is through contact with body fluids or tissue from an infected animal, but again, this animal must be dead. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that domestic dogs and cats can also carry plague-infected fleas and transmit them to their owners, just as the rats did during the Black Death. These fleas, which are carried by rodents and carnivores, transmit septicemic plague (infecting the blood), which is even more deadly than bubonic plague. They are largely responsible for the near-extinction of the Black-Footed Ferret.
You write, "[Rats] carry so many different diseases..." to prelude your list. Certainly, rats CAN carry a number of different diseases, but any species can including humans. By your logic, people should avoid exiting their homes and coming into contact with other humans, lest they be carrying some sort of deadly disease or virus. According to the news and media, many human beings can be carriers of the Ebola virus. Does this mean you should avoid all human contact because people are capable of harbouring this deadly virus?
As well, the number one vector for pet-related zoonotic diseases is the domestic cat, with domestic dogs being a close second. Focusing just on cats, these animals (which I doubt you have issues with) are capable of transmitting leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis, Q fever, cryptospiridium, salmonellosis, giardiasis, toxocariasis, anthrax, cowpox, e-coli, rabies, bartonellosis (also called "cat scratch disease"), the H1N1 and H5N1 viruses, methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), trypanosama cruzi (Chaga's disease), dermatophytosis, sporotrichosis, campylobacteriosis, listeriosis, entamoeba histolytica, pasteurellosis, yersiniosis, rickettsia felis, and tularemia to name a very mere few. Some of these such as rabies and listeriosis are fatal in humans. It was also reported in March, 2014 that a feline located in England successfully transmitted tuberculosis on to its humans, marking the first documented case of feline/human TB transfer in history. And so, even if experts tell you that cats do not transfer certain zoonoses does not mean it cannot happen. This, of course, makes the number of potential zoonoses transmissible by felines listless.
In your list, you include, "allergic reaction to the people [the rat] bites". It is completely paralogical to include this in your list. There are many people across the globe who are anaphylacticly allergic to peanuts... far more than those who are allergic to rat bites. Should the peanut (Arachis hypogaea) be brought to extinction, then? Or what about domestic cats? Humans do not even need to be bitten by a cat in order to exhibit symptoms of allergic reaction. Since the primary allergen produced by cats is located in their saliva, it is even more hazardous for these people should they be bitten by a cat they are allergic to. Domestic cats are far more likely to bite than the domestic rat, and cat allergies are reportedly the most prevalent pet allergy in the United States, making your risible statement ("allergic reaction to the people if it bites") a significantly greater concern with domestic cats, not rats.
You continue to write, "They are lazy and just want to eat unless you train them for a very long time." This statement may be reworded as, "If rats are trained for a very long time, they are no longer lazy or just want to eat." However you choose to frame your preposterous statement, it is with resounding accuracy that these words mirror your patent intellectual bankruptcy on this species. To address your original phrasing of the statement, "They are lazy and just want to eat...", this once again may be directly applied to the classic domestic cat. In fact, some domestic dogs suit your description, and many children do as well. How you arrived at the conclusion that extensive training somehow eliminates an animal's intrinsic desire to eat and rest is beyond my reasoning capacity, primarily because it is completely void of logic. Moreover, rats do not JUST want to eat and be lazy (many rats, especially females, are far from lazy). Rats thrive on interaction with their humans, and their level of loyalty and affection is tantamount to that of a dog. Unless you have experienced the devout loyalty and love of a rat, you are in no position whatsoever to make statements on this topic.
You conclude the aforementioned statement with, "if you have time for that lmao", in reference to the extensive training you claim is necessary to prevent rats from being "lazy" and "just wanting to eat". This insinuates that, since some people may not have time for this training that isn't necessary (you claim it is, but it isn't) to prevent lazy, hungry rats (as if this is some terrible thing), nobody should keep rats as pets. Using this logic, we could also say that since some people do not have time for raising children and training them extensively to not be "lazy" and "just wanting to eat", having children should be illegal. This is as far from logical as your statement listed as #2 is.
For number 3, you write, "They will still bite the owner even if the owner feed/pet it". I have been keeping rats for many years and currently have both domestic rats and wild rats (Rattus Norvegicus) as pets. As a provincially licensed wildlife rehabilitator and professional studio animal trainer, I have an enormous amount of experience working with a broad spectrum of both domestic and wild animal species. Of all the species I have worked with (and I have worked with MANY different animal species), rats are actually the LEAST likely to bite (especially domestic rats), and to this day I have never, ever been bitten by a rat. As prey animals, rats typically run away to escape harm rather than confront. Your statement would be better applied to other animal species, including domestic cats and even some domestic dogs.
And lastly, you write, "They will bite your wall in your houses until it have a hole." I, and thousands of other rat owners across the globe, keep my pet rats in my home. Yet, all of my walls are perfectly intact and my rats have never even so much as shown interest in what you claim they will do. Your statement is too absurd for me to waste my time nitpicking it.
"So to all of you rat lovers don't you find yourselves creepy/stupid for adoring or having a pet like that?" No... no we don't. We are proud of our pets and the close relationships we share with these rodents, as any animal caregiver is. We are not easily deceived by myths and "facts" (which are not facts at all) such as those which you have saturated your comment in. We know the truth, and we are more than willing to share it with the public. I do educational work with my rats and I have yet to meet a person who has continued to dislike the species after meeting mine. They quickly realise that they are just another loving, intelligent, and emotional animal on this planet as dogs and cats are, and they have been unfairly stigmatised by the media.
I will kindly ask that you refrain from posting any further comments on this topic to prevent others from dying of suffocation as they inhale the toxic fumes of your blatant naivety, which permeates the atmosphere with each word written in your preposterous comment. It is depriving the rest of us of the intelligence, logic, and common sense that typically inhabits our surroundings and is vital for our survival. Good day.

I can't believe somebody not only commented with such rubbish, but then labelled it as "fact," in actual fact, I find it frightening that people feel they are in a position to comment on things they blatantly have no knowledge of at all, instead of watching, listening, and learning in order to overcome their ignorance. I fear for humanity, and for my children who are growing up in a world that is so full of people that spread ignorance just for the sake of opening their mouths, who spout opinions rather than gaining knowledge. sorry to hear that your little one passed. I just nursed mine through a real bad one. Heaving sides and gasping for breath. I was stressed and worried for days. I'm just glad we beat it. Don't let anyone tell you that it's silly to greave for loosing a rat. Some of my friends are like 'It's just a rat. They are nasty any way." I just look at them and ask how they would feel if they lost their dog.

I've rescued rats for many years and I can see right away that these guys are having a ball! It would be cruel if they were given nothing to stimulate their amazing capabilities - and play! I am in awe of your training NanaBorderCollie. I wish I could have been so talented. Don't listen to trolls. I too would say that using animals in circuses is abhorrent - this is their Forever home and they are all healthy and happy. Believe me, I can tell at a glance after all these years. You obviously have a great respect and love for all your animals, and you keep them playing happily. Well done!

Worst case is when I had my boys I had a few people hating on me and worst thing was some of these people would message horrible stuff to me when I one of my boys had passed away :(
Shame on them. It's always sad losing a pet/ more like a friend. If they can't tell that you loved those little boys to death and they just wanted to be mean, they don't understand true friendship and loyalty.

I have always been a big fan of your videos and love your animals. I love how obedient and loyal they are. I was wondering if you've ever thought of putting a tutorial video of how exactly you train them. Like how you start teaching them a trick and all the steps. I would love to teach my rat Runt these tricks. He's 1 year old this April. His friend just passed away, he's kind of depressed so I get him out which helps but I think getting his brain going and keeping it simulated would keep him very happy also. Thank you.

This was so utterly fun to watch, and I hope one day I could train Gir and Zim, my new 6 week old baby rats that I got yesterday, to do some of these wonderful tricks! Not only is it good for the critters, but it can also be good for their owners, as it requires you to spend time with your fur babes. I can tell how much you love them, which is great. I absolutely love this, keep up the great work.

My husband Jim and I just watched kaiser's birthday party video. It was the best video I've ever seen. it was so adorable how Nana and Famous got so involved with getting the party ready for their brother. I can't get over how wonderful you are with your animals. You are wonderful parents to your animal children!!! We used to have rats too but never knew to train them. We have 11 cats and 2 dogs and one very old Ferret named Freddie who is in his last days. I never knew we could train the ferrets either until seeing your videos. You are just wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing your four legged family with all of us!!!!

It is wonderful that you have such a close relationship with your rats! I was especially interested to see that you trained them to come to you when they were loose outdoors; how far from you do they roam?
Those little girls trusts you with every fiber of their being.It did make me nervous seeing Shadow outside, but that's more of a reaction of someone who lives in an area with several predators lurking around. You know your area more than I do, and you stated that there's not many predators in your area that are brazen enough to come near humans. How long did it take for you to teach them the recall, and how did you go about training them for it?
+Rebecca Middleton Sharing a close and strong bond with the rat is fundamental to a reliable recall. Shadow mastered the recall after working on it with her one afternoon. She was trained to stay when I cued her to, and came to me only when she was called. Her stay/come was better than any of the dogs in my neighbourhood.

And yes, the rats have done a large number media projects... more than Nana and Kaiser combined, in fact. Famous has gotten the most work over the years and still continues to travel doing live performances with her props. Paris, Raven, and Shadow have passed, and Suki is only doing small projects at present. Famous is a workaholic though, so I cannot deny her the opportunity to do what she loves when it arises.
I've never had a rat before but just got a young female pew rescue last night! She's settling in well,but how do you even begin to train them?
What an amazing job you've done with these rodents! You have certainly opened MANY Eye's To The World Of Rats & Congratulations On That. So sorry to hear about your loss though. Take comfort in knowing what a wonderful life you gave Paris.

Awesome video! I've had rats before so I know how smart they are, but I'm still super impressed with how much you've accomplished :) The only things I taught my rats was recall and spin. They did learn that very quickly though, so I'm positive that if I'd tried to they could have learned a bunch of other tricks too.

Simply amazing, what smart inquisitive little creatures they are. This had to of took alot of practice and patience. Thanks for sharing and I am so sorry about Paris passing away. I get so attached to my pets and this is the only negative thing I have to say about rats is their short lifespan. I wear my heart on my sleeve so I get so emotional.

Shows how much more intelligent rats are compared to people... and some even use these relaly potentially smart sweeties in experiments. That's awful.
