Explanation: it is not violent. The goal is to offset the play in the axle towards you with the screwdriver, and when you hit it with a hammer the axle can move as much as it has play. When doing that the mass of the flywheel etc makes that want to stay so they are pulled apart. The screwdriver also helps the flywheel with more "stay" than only the inertia.
Clutches would never get stuck if the PTO got some oil before the clutch is installed. And they wouldn't get stuck if they had shorter service intervals.
