@@J8D2 there’s a clip of John squire in the audience of the cream reunion gig in 2005. It’s in you tube somewhere, the song is crossroads. Obviously a fan of them.
and yet 11 years later this is amazing, John is just feeling the music. He may not look excited but you know in his head he's having that "bedroom rockstar" moment we've all had. His playing speaks for himself, he doesn't need words
What always amazed me about squire was how little effort it seemed to take him to play some of the best guitar riffs and solos your ever going to hear.
Ians one lucky man imagine seeing these 3 jam every day all the stuff that didn't get recorded them just playing must have seen and heard some epic music
Yeah ... Or something. Maybe it's just the sound. Hard to say. I know what you mean though. Maybe the crowd (or lack there of) had something to do with the whole performance....
Reni is in my top 3 all-time drummer list (with Bonham & Porcaro). And for me the biggest thrill was that so many people never got to see the beatmaster Reni in full-flow & now they were going to see what all the fuss was about. And boy do I think he delivered. I never for one second think I'm watching a different drummer. Some of the uploaded footage I found still brings a wee tear of joy to the eye...and I can't stop playing it. For me, Ten Storey & Shoot you Down are the only disappointments.
It is all subjective I know. I do agree Reni is playing it more straight-up on his comeback. I still believe he's got his legendary Swing...and still very much got his groove. And for a cat who ain't drummed live for damn near 20 year he still wipes the floor with most of the competition. Why more straight-up drumming? I think its to do with Squire's more rock and bluesy approach than the psychedelic-funk. The old speedy jazz Swing would've thrown the whole thing off. That's my theory, anyway.
@@thomasedmundrichards To "jam" is to improvise music without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements, except for when the group is playing well-known jazz standards or covers of existing popular songs. ... Both styles can be used simply as a social gathering and communal practice session.
When I see them jamming like this, it makes me ponder why they weren't huge in the US of A? They had all the ingredients necessary to be a truly massive band over there. I suppose they didn't really try when it comes down to it, more about a lack of exposure over there than people not 'getting' them. They say it takes a lot of repeated heavy touring across the lower 48 to really get anywhere and they didn't do that, even at their height of their fame in the UK they weren't doing big tours. It was more about creating spectacular one off gigs. Really glad that I got to see them a fair few times back then. From a few hundred at gigs before they became popular in 1987/8, to a few thousand in university halls when the debut LP came out, to the seminal Blackpool show [when I bet 75% of the crowd were 'on one'] to Ali Paly and SI. Some of the best gigs I've ever been to, the closest I got to witnessing something like Beatlemania I reckon. I can remember them playing an absolute storming set at Leeds Poly in '89. At the end of the gig the crowd went absolutely wild, they were the best I've ever seen them that night, truly mind blowing. Mani was that excited at the end of the IATR encore that he literally jumped into John's arms in the middle of the stage. I've seen a lot of bands over the years, but when everything clicked with the Roses nobody could touch them, both in terms of musicianship, the quality of their songs and the atmosphere at the gigs.
@Ronnie Mccoll Absolutely nothing pretentious about what I wrote. I was only wondering aloud about why they weren't a big band in the states. I also think you need to understand what the word 'pretentious' means before accusing somebody of it. I've never commented on a CZcams video wanting or expecting likes either. This was an old video and I've only commented on it relatively recently, that's not the way to attract attention or likes. I couldn't even remember what I wrote before your comment. I was probably drunk or high AF when I wrote the original comment and that's why it's a mini essay.
Although squire is obviously a guitar legend and mani is one of the best drummers there has been, i think mani is underrated in bass, as he has written some cracking bass lines and they are often the focal point of the stone roses songs, hes also pretty modest when you hear his interviews
Just stumbled across this video, quality footage of THE best band. Do you have any more footage? I watched them first at Spike Island in 90,Heaton Park fri/sat again at V Weston Park and more recently Glasgow Green and I have got to say they just get better and better. As for Ian Brown not being able to sing..... he's Ian Brown end off.
This guy and Alex Lifeson are my favorite guitarists. The complexity of their style beats any modern contemporary guitarist (besides John Mayer and Keith Urban, they’re legit for the more modern guitar players)
Star of the show is always John's hair. Tonight it decided to be Clapton, circa cream's very last performance. He needs a word with it before it dedicates an evening to Guthrie govan..
John Squire is the closest thing to a Jimi Hendrix or young Pete Townshend now. We have dozens of shredders but they ain't got an once of the soul John's playing does.
These boys are like superheroes.. Sorry John isnt on board with what's going on..respect to Ian..keep on fighting. Welfare of humanity is the alibi of tyrants (Camus) one love
I know what you mean, it's less funky and more just plain old rock n roll. He improvises much less now it's a shame but I guess that's what old age does to you!
Reni was still like an octopus at the Heaton comeback shows.. totally mesmerising..age didn't seem to have affected him in any way, bit like Copeland who's still a monster!!
Man John Squire makes it look so easy, he’s absolutely up there with the likes of Hendrix and Clapton
Reni is also one of the greatest Drummers ever
He actually looks like a carbon copy of cream era Eric Clapton in this clip

I've never seen anyone play guitar so incredibly well whilst simultaneously looking so bored.
What always amazed me about squire was how little effort it seemed to take him to play some of the best guitar riffs and solos your ever going to hear.
Sill one if coolest guitarists around and vastly underrated
He should be on the guitar “lists”
He’s hardly underrated, I can assure you
Man, John just never runs out of notes or chords. It just keeps coming and it’s all 👍
All the years when we didn't have music from these guys. Reni is an epic level drummer.
One of the best drummer/guitarist combinations ever (with all due respect to Ian Brown and Mani, they're pretty amazing too)
totally agree, hands down
Renni best drummer in the world.
And The Who wanted him.
i cant help but follow Mani's bass playing. The smooth style contrasts extremely well with squires punch

totally agree with ya on that one mate
Sheer and Utter Polished Perfection ✅
I always think john squire was the jimmy page on Britpop era. The second coming has a heavily influence on led zeppelin riff n licks.
love spreads so easily with this band!
I always wondered what the fade out bit would sound like if the record didn't cut off at the end.
God bless you John.
There's the skill right there. Ian tags along and doesn't get vaxed!
Mani Reni and John just had that one in a Billion Chemistry where it’s all so much more than the sum of it’s parts.. MAGIC ⭐️🌞⭐️🌞⭐️🌞⭐️🌞
Theses guys are musical Wizards.
I don’t like to listen to many dudes jam on guitar but he’s one of them
Dumbledore failed the John Squire class.
I could listen to and watch Reni all day.
its a joy, his natural rhythm and swing are glorious to watch
Reni the beast, the head that launched a million bucket hats
4 lads playing great music sadly what the world is missing today

Reni - my favourite drummer. Shame his heart wasn't in this latest thing.
