    Squire recorded the entire first album on a 60's strat into a hotrodded twin reverbs along with a mesa boogie amp. Pedals he used were a vintage tubescreamer, fuzz face, ibanez chorus, and an alesis midiverb. in 1990, he switched over to a modified fender jaguar with humbuckers, hence the difference sound on the one love single. He has remained loyal to mesa boogie amplifiers.

    this just goes to show how mediocre “traditional rock guitarists” struggle with playing lots of indie/alternative music. With guitarists like john squire, johnny marr, graham coxon, etc they strip away alot of the heavy fuzz and overdrive and play using feel, creativity, restraint, and ingenuity. they have complete intuitive knowledge of tones. they make it sound simple and easy until you try and play it just like them and realize how difficult it really is.

    • @richardjohnson7379
      @richardjohnson7379 Před 5 lety +8

      Kenneth Moutet Graham Coxon always used distortion and had a pedal board the size of a small house. Traditional rock guitarists like Hank Marvin, Link Wray, Chuck Berry etc always played with a stripped back style. If you’re talking about shredders I agree with you, but traditional rock guitarists, they were way more inventive than their indie counterparts

    • @blurdynamic9118
      @blurdynamic9118 Před 5 lety +16

      With John Squire in particular I find that he's generally a really underappreciated talent and guitarist because he could write songs like Waterfall or She Bangs the Drums which is much more indie focused and softer but then do songs like Breaking into Heaven or Love Spreads which was much more of a traditional rock sound. I feel the Stone Roses fan base are generally an indie fan base who aren't fans of traditional harder rock which is why the second album is passed off as shit.

    Other effects used by John Squire (first album/live):
    - Crest Audio Fuzz Face (Silicon BC109C) for I Am The Resurretion outro and some other stuff.
    Used with the TS9 stacked on top for a HUGE sound.
    - Ibanez CS9. A pedal that Ibanez recently remade/re-released as the Chorus Mini. Wonderful, shimmering chorus.
    - Squire also used the drive channel on a Mesa Boogie Mark amp, which is WAY out of the price range, but you can get pretty close to that tone with a good Distorion pedal.
    - Boss Flanger BF-2. Simple, solid and great sounding. And relatively inexpensive.

    My Seymour Duncan JB and 4 conductor 59' sounds incredible split. The JB is high output so split theres still plenty output and the 59' has a warm full tone that keeps it from sounding too thin split so it also sounds great. Sure they probably arent identical to a true single coil but they still sound amazing. Im completely happy using those pickups split in place of true single coils. I still want a few guitars that have single coils but i dont feel like i need them. I highly recommend spending the extra few dollars/pounds for the 4 conductor 59'. Having the bridge spilt and the neck as a humbucker or the bridge as a humbucker and the 59' in the neck split sounds so good. Such a great sound if you like to play clean. If you ever get a chance to try splitting just one at a time with a JB/59' settup im confident youll love it.

I personally rather enjoy seeing you use things multiple times, as it just shows the quality and versatility of the gear.

      I use an Epiphone SG modified w/P90 "Buckers" and an Alvarez 335 into a Vox AC15 with good results.
      Peter used lots of different amps in the studio, but usually settled on Vox live and, ofc, his Rickys. I can't afford a Rick but find those guitars and my Schecter Tele Dlx "Fastback Special 2" work well.
      A Compressor and a good tone-shaping Boost should help. A Klon style, Xotic RC, or my fave underrated boost the MXR FET Driver all help.
      A chorus for the "Fables" tones :)

    I love watching your videos, you are extremely talented and knowledgeable but it was pretty evident that neither of you had much love for the subject matter here. Please understand there are people out here in CZcams land who will LOVE the band's you are attempting to replicate and if you're going to do it then commit. It would be nice to see you enthused by music you hadn't previously given much time to. One of the first things you need to replicate the sounds of the Roses first album is a capo. Ps Mani is called Gary Mounfield and the Roses heyday was 5 years before the term Britpop was in common usage. Peace.

    To all you young players out there looking for your first real rig I’ll say it every single time,
    Save some extra for a
    1.Baja Telecaster - it’s an amazing guitar for the price
    2. 410 hot rod deville - second hand or NOS and you can get them for $400 - -$700 and they are absolute drum killers
    3. TS9 or go fancy for a TS808 reissue plus a crybaby wah
    All for well under $2000 and you will be the guitar envy of all your guitar playing friends. Great MIM guitar that sounds and plays like a dream with an amp that will outshine everything on the stage and it takes pedals for days. Pedals vary by personality but a tube screamer and wah are rights of passage for all of us. If you’re a metal guy the tele is still great just ask John 5 and maybe an AC15 instead or a Marshall. If you wanna go nuts just add a Harley Benton cab for a mini stack. Have fun playing!
