    How polite it was of the Saxons to stand back and give the vikings plenty of space to climb out from the sewers. Really sporting of them to wait until all of the vikings were up and out to start fighting, too.

      @MisterAcker Před 4 lety +9

      @@6ixlxrdHence why I said, it's awesome theatrically, but otherwise impractical. That's what it focuses on is theatrics, as it's a drama. This, 9 times out of 10, would never have worked. Unless they came up at night when there weren't so many soldiers in the streets. If they really wanted to make it realistic in a sense that the Vikings would actually win this scenario, they would have just had it be a night raid when there are less people out and about. More people could come up quietly. Cool scene, but again, impractical

    It is getting rather irritating how useless the Saxons are being portrayed, early on when the vikings were an unknown threat sure you can exaggerate them as idiots, but it's been decades and even when they have the tactical advantage like a bunch of dude climbing up ladders straight into a bottleneck they get defeated.

      Totally agree. This was a truly unbelievable scene. King Athelwulf is an experienced, battle-hardened warrior in his own right who has fought both against AND with the vikings. For them to stand there and watch the vikings crawl out of that hole is ridiculous; and if this wasn't a sill TV show - it would be an insult to our intelligence. Ivar is supposed to be a genius, so make him one. This isn't a very good example of that.

      @@kalgeriax1016 Not really wise, tbh. The Saxons were already suspicious due to the rats, and it would've been fairly easy to "shield-wall" the sewers while simultaneously pushing any stray civilians out of harm's way. In fact, all the Saxons had to do was stab down, not slashing forward (so no civilians would've been hurt anyway). Instead they stood still even AFTER all the civilians were gone, allowed the viking's full force to climb out of the sewers, THEN decided to attack. The vikings may have had the element of surprise, but the Saxons had the "high-ground". They shouldn't have lost.

Its not the usual glorified scene where the major characters mows down any enemies one by one and emerging unbothered, it's pure chaos where everything is your weapon, people clashing swords and shields at every direction, blood and mud all mixed up together, numerous bodies littered in the ground unsure if they are dead or just injured and unconscious, no rules and you just have to win.

I come from Stamford Bridge where the last great battle was fought. When we were kids we knew where it was fought because of the ploughing & flooding around the river Derwent. The soil is very heavy clay & you could find artifacts (something the Time Team could not establish). York was also known as Eborcaerum by the Romans.

    Although not particularly historically accurate (did they actually have sewers in York at the time?) this is a very intense battle scene, and extremely well filmed on a tight budget. A lot of people comment on how "hot" they think Alex Hogh Anderson is, but he scuttles around here like a big, badass Norway rat, and he's utterly terrifying. I should know, I used to live in a place that was infested with Norway rats, and they're fracking AWFUL!

      @Spankypenguin1 Před 5 lety +1

      At least 1 intact Roman sewer has been found in York, it is however way smaller than depicted in the show, the Vikings would have to crawl single file through it. It is also made of stone blocks not bricks.

  • @cuchulainn117
    @cuchulainn117 Před 3 lety +3

    I think if memory serves me the accounts of this battle were that they waited till they were asleep and drunk and they attacked under the cover of night taking key points of York such as the gates and the keep then just closed in on the surrounded and trapped Saxons. This is just an educated guess though.

  • @vindolanda6974
    @vindolanda6974 Před 3 lety +7

    Pretty silly how this show makes the Vikings into the cool rock stars whilst the Saxons are bumbling idiots. In fact they weren't that different culturally, the Saxons also had a warrior culture, but there were also Christians and builders by this point. Just around 300 years before this the Saxons had been barbarian northern raiders from the ocean themselves.

    I agree with the minority of comments about the majority of dults talking about how unrealistic it is the Saxons just "stood around and let the Vikings pop out one by one". You gotta use your brain and remember that almost none of us have ever fought in a mideivol weapons-style battle. The Saxon army is celebrating in the streets mixed in with the countryfolk. Do you think that every soldier has a Birdseye view or the view we see from a camera?...just staring at the random spots of ground that go to the the sewers? Some aren't armed soldiers, most are distracted with their guard down, and a TON of them have their view blocked by the crowd of people they're surrounded by. When you go to a giant concert and stand in the middle of a huge crowd, will you be able to see what a handful of people are doing 15 feet away? No. You are going to see bodies or the back of heads or who you are directly interacting with. It is also to note that the attack is coming from the ground up, making it even harder to spot in a crowd. And out of the few that do, they have to try to alert the rest and get them to mobilize or into into formation as they stand around distracted and scattered. By the time you get enough soldiers to understand the situation, you already have arrows flying and bodies dropping and random combat happening all around while most don't even know where it's coming from by the time they realize it is happening. Commanding officers can't just order formations in a blindside attack. Maybe the directing is done a bit exaggerated, but that is to give us the viewers a clear view and understanding of the strategy as with most movie/TV battles. All cinematic battles are exaggerated. Plus, the tactical strategy of using arrows, throwing knives, etc means the first few Vikings who make their way up through will be quickly picking off those close enough to spot the breach. It's not that farfetched if you use your head.
