How good is KAI KF-21 Boramae of South Korea - KF-21 analysis

  • South Korea's homegrown KF-21 Boramae fighter jet flew for the first time, putting the country among the few nations to have developed and flown an advanced supersonic fighter.
The first prototype KF-21, named Boramae, which means hawk in Korean, with serial 001, took off at 3:40 PM local time, slightly delayed by weather, before landing at 4:13 PM. Flying as a chase plane to monitor the flight was another KAI product, a two-seat T-50 advanced jet trainer. The latter jet may have been from the 281st Test Flight Squadron that’s also based at Sacheon.
Major Ahn Jun-hyun of South Korea’s Air Force piloted the KF-21 prototype No.1 featuring the national flags of South Korea and Indonesia.
the jet was also fitted with four mock-ups of the long-range Meteor air-to-air missile (AAM), carried in their semi-conformal location under the fuselage.
The twin-engined aircraft bore the flags of both South Korea and Indonesia - the only foreign partner in the program. Unusually for a first flight, The KF-21 was also seen carrying four mock-ups of the Meteor long-range, air-to-air missile under the fuselage. First rolled out in April 2021, the aircraft underwent ground tests earlier this year.

Indonesia did not technically participate in the KF-21 development project. Their role was to share risk by just sharing 20% of development costs, but they have yet to pay 90% of the promised amount. Korea's KF-21 project chief firmly said Indonesia will not deliver the prototype unless it pays the promised amount.

A few days ago, Poland signed a contract to purchase 48 fa50s. In addition, Poland is showing interest in the kf21 and has confirmed a contract to purchase 1000 k2 tanks and 300 k9 self-propelled howitzers.
The total amount of contract that Poland has decided to introduce from Korea is $14 billion, and even the governor of the Polish Bank went to Korea to guarantee payment.
The Philippines, which already operates the fa50, is also expressing its intention to purchase the kf21.
Norway and Finland already have a number of k9 self-propelled howitzers in service. And last year, Egypt signed a contract to purchase the k9 self-propelled howitzer. That number is 300.
The Thai and Colombian air forces have also adopted the fa50 and are operating it successfully.
In addition, it exported US$300 million worth of air defense missiles to United Arab Emirates.
Recently, the British Ministry of Defense is also proposing to become a new partner for kf21. Technical cooperation with the UK is of practical help to Korea and the UK.
The UK could provide Korea with technology for engines.
Meanwhile, Korea can transfer technology and stealth-type design for electromagnetic interference equipment such as infrared detection and tracking equipment (IRST), electro-optical target tracking equipment (EO TGP), and AESA radar developed by Korea.
The reason why South Korea continues to show patience now is not because the development of weapons is impossible without Indonesia, but because it is more beneficial to both countries if the two countries cooperate.
It is not that Korea is reaching out to Indonesia because it lacks money or technology.
    Indonesians should not forget this.
Koreans feel extremely humiliated by Indonesia, which has repeatedly broken promises for years. And this has now turned into anger.

No first generation machinery this complex is ever going to compete well with nations like those of the West that's been building aircraft in general and fighter jets in specific since the 1920s.
But, fortunately, the South Koreans are quick study. I still remember their first gen cars in the 1990s: everyone made fun of those cars; and to be honest, they sucked big time.
They were no better than the former "Yugoslavia" and it's "Yugo" mini-car. But unlike the former Yugoslavia, South Korea quickly became a very stable economy and started shooting up the economic ranking, making it become more and more prosperous and educated, as the years and decades went by... so its automotive and electronic industries matured and expanded, making South Korea one of the most successful nations, in the last 25 plus years...
South Korea was still behind many Mid East and Central American nations. Its economic and scientific rise didn't start until the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s...
Today, 2022, just 52M South Koreans produce an economy larger than Russia's 145M people.... it is basically an economy that is exactly the same as Canada and Italy...
The South Koreans had a strategy to hold on to customers, though; and it was essentially, if our car breaks down, come back and we'd give you a new one, no questions asked! And analysts and consumers alike were still skeptical; but, again, the South Koreans soldiered on. They hired more experienced engineers and designers from the West ---- exactly as they did with their cell phone/Samsung business --- and soon after, things started to come together...
But the second generation got better and now, 3-4 production generations later, South Korea sedans are as good, engineering wise and fabrication, as American, European, and Japanese cars.
The actual act of just building a car or an aircraft, many countries would do it, if the infrastructure, the engineers, the supply lines, etc. are already in existence. But creating all those from scratch WHILE you're also building a car or a jet... that takes deep scientific knowledge, commitment, sustained funding, supply line, and infrastructure building.

Besides the test flight was with the landing gear out... And it maiden test flgiht flew 250 miles per hour, that is about as fast as a Peregrine Falcon.
But I am really curious as to where they got the engine from, Honestly. What and who made it where and stuff.

After the new negotiations, Indonesia returned, but Indonesian technicians were not allowed to join, that's why Indonesia was reluctant to pay the agreement. and finally exposed the rottenness of korea, they are cunning, their goal in the future is to make Indonesia an importer of this aircraft & depend on Korea forever. Putting the cart way before the horse.
Also, likely not. The only fighters, outside of Soviet-era ones like the MiG-29s that Poland was offering them, that they've wanted are basically any F-16s that they can get their hands on. Realistically, due to parts and pilot training and availability, Su-27s and MiG-29s (maybe with western avionics) would be a much better choice for Ukraine. Also, the KF-21 would not be cheap and, unlike us Americans that are willing to give basically everything away from free... ahem... the South Koreans are going to want payment for it. Which... is going to be an issue.

    • @Itsjustme-Justme
      @Itsjustme-Justme Před rokem +1

@@matchesburn Poland doesn't trust anyone. They had more than enough bad luck in the last century. That's why they diversify their purchases to different manufacturers in different countries and that's why they invest huge amounts of money (remember, Poland is far from being rich) in technology transfer. They do everything they can to never get occupied again. It would have been easier to just stick to used F-16s, but they decided to buy brand new FA-50s. It would have been easier to stick to Leopards and Abrams' (plural?) but they decided to licence build and modify Korean tanks. Same for artillery systems.
The USA will not continue to give everything for free to Ukraine once the war ended. Of course a used F-16 will still be cheaper than a brand new KF-21, but price is not everything. Russia will stay Ukraine's main enemy. Ukraine needs state of the art weapons systems because Russia will always have greater numbers of weapons and troops. The KF-21 is semi stealth. The F-16 is not stealth at all. Having a low radar echo in frontal view has some major advantages both for fast strikers and for air superiority fighters. The Russian Su-57 basically has the same semi stealth layout. When it comes to flight performance, I don't know which one really is best when carrying the same weapon load.
Pilot training is only an issue when it comes to instant aircraft supplies in the upcoming weeks or few months. Flying high performance aircraft basically is all the same, their handling is not that different from each other. It takes just a few weeks of training. The bigger difference is avionics. Training efficient use of modern avionics in combat situations is harder than learning to fly the aircraft. Thats why training an experienced MiG-29 pilot to use the F-16 is not much harder or much more time consuming than training him to use a MiG-29 that was converted to F-16 avionics.
Updating Sowjet designs will not make much sense anyway. There had been heavy attacks on Ukrainian aircraft repair and maintenance facilities. There is not much more left than quite basic field repair shops. They basically have to restart their repair and maintenance facilities from scratch. In that situation, sticking to Sowjet designs currently manufactured in Russia doesn't offer advantages over switching to any other design.
I think there will be a multi stage program to upgrade Ukraine's air force. First will be an instant emergengy fighter purchace in the next few weeks and months. They will try to get their hands on as many MiG-29s and Su-27s as possible. Looking forward 1-3 years, they will get used F-16s (or maybe F/A-18) and probably A-10. This will be their main combat aircraft for maybe 8-10 years but it will not be enough on a longer perspective. They will need something semi stealthy that is able to kill Su-57s under all circumstances. The KF-21 probably is the cheapest option, certainly cheaper than F-35.

But the most important part, jet engine, is made by GE and has used for F/A-18 variant, which is reliable, and Korea has several jet fighter part production experiences under license. Also S.Korea has great technical assets and manpower about electronical equipment and software development. So I think S.Korea's jet fighter program will be running smooth mostly, but assume will not overwhelm F/A-18EF so much because of lack of experience, limitation of form factor and lack of some of stealth tech & sensor fusion. The F-117 downing was caused more by poor mission planning as they repeatedly used the same route over and over again at which point the search radar gave enough warning to a fighter flying over the route the heads up to visually id the target and fire at point blank range.

    KF-21's pros and cons
    pros:
    - Good enough for third world for the next generation
    - Good enough for first world as a low-class fighter for the next generation
    - aims to be cheap
    - American-like design and concepts(it means users can use American weapon systems & can further adapt to American fighters easily if they get richer and try to buy them)
    - Stealth-like hull design&extra internal space for future internal weapon bay(can later improve into 5th gen stealth fighter & has lower RCS as itself compared to other 4.5gen fighters)
    - is a Korean weapon system(can make better deals with other cost-effective Korean weapon systems that are already field-proved)
    - no downgrading(Koreans don't do the Soviet/Russian bullshit business. They rather upgrade depending on the buyers' requests.)
    - will be compatible with new cost-effective aero weaponry of Korea. (KGGB, a cost-effective JDAM is out there, and Koreans are also developing many different aero weapons including AAM)
    - improved cockpit electronics(Korea is strong at software&electronics development, and they aim for a system at high-class F-35 level cockpit system for this low-class fighter. AI and AR/VR and more tech will be applied.)
    cons:
    - Not fully developed yet(meaning it can always fail at anytime, thou hardly think so considering Korean weapon development history and the American helps they are getting now in this project)
    - the low price they say can always double up depending on how many countries buy it
    - has no fully functioning anti-surface ability until the future-planned Block-II(planned in late 2020s~2030s)
    - Korea has no experience in building its own jet fighter(Korea has successful weapon development history in various fields, and also co-developed f/a-50 fighter/attacker with the US, but KF-21 is a different story. It is challenging enough for them)
    - Uses American engines(not a good choice for nations unfriendly with the US. However, the plane is designed specifically for developing nations who aim for improving their weapon systems into American weapons in the future. That's the whole concept of Korean weapon export business. An Cost-effective alternative choice over sophisticated&expensive American weapons as a form of starter-set of American weapon tech-tree)
    - No other variation options yet(no carrier fighter, no ECM fighter, no trainer. they are planning those thou)
    - China hates Korea(you buy this, say byebye to even cheaper Chinese weapons. Again, KF-21 is not a good choice for America haters)

      Hi nice to meet you.
I understood that you are comparing A and B.
However, KF21 has yet to develop weapons. It is also thought that there will be many things to improve performance. Therefore, simply comparing can make a big difference when the result is reached, so I think simple comparison is still too much. The kf21 is a later developed fighter than the Raptor, and although it is small in size, it can be a completely different fighter from the Raptor depending on what kind of weapon it is equipped with and what function it carries. However, it would be clear that it could not have more performance than a Raptor. Simply comparing various weapons and functions without completion is the same as comparing pumpkins and balloons. That's why I said that everything in Asia is small compared to Asia and the rest of the world. In fact, Asians are short, but all household products are cutely small. However, its function and capability are not much different in function from those of large people outside of Asia. I simply wanted to express it. Thank you for your interest in kf21. Please continue to pay a lot of attention to kf21.
