      Same here, I have friends who only downhill an usually shuttle for their runs, and I don't understand it. Going downhill isn't as satisfying if you don't work hard on the uphill.

      I love climbing. It's my favorite part of riding. With a history in powerlifting, I love the effort and pain associated. I can vouch for the Fatties climbing prowess. I think if I could build an XC hardtail with 2.4's, it might change my life.

  • @TheEvaCarlson
    @TheEvaCarlson Před 8 lety +1

    One thing that can really change the game is if you use a fork with adjustable course on an enduro bike. You get a better traction than the hardtail bikes and a much better geometry for climbing. One thing that is absolutely crucial for traction, power and balance when climbing on steep terrains is to not have your seat too far behind the crankset.
    @GMBN: where are you located? I'd really enjoy to take lessons with you and/or ride together if you're in the Alps.

    • @alantaylor6691
      @alantaylor6691 Před 5 lety

      What is "adjustable course" on the front fork? Is that either rebound dampening or compression dampening?

    I would have liked to see how a 27.5+ bike would have climbed, like the scott genius, to me, those are the most interesting bikes right now. I think that the 27.5+ would be the single best all around bike for summer, winter, climbing, descending and everything else. Would love to see a video about the capabilities of a 27.5+.

    @piast99 Před 8 lety +1

    I have a classix 26" XC bike and if I go riding in the terrain where there are technical and grip demanding climbs I trade off low rolling resistance of typical skinny XC tyres and just put 2.35" Nobby Nics on the wheels. After doing so only my strength and stamina limit the climbing abilities, not the grip.

    Something to consider during your highly scientific climbing tests: Rider effort!
    I feel the amount of effort (both at the pedals and controlling the bike) trumps speed to the top of the hill.
    I ride a 120mm 29er and I still grind slowly up the climbs, but I am no longer exhausted when I get there and have better control for the rest of the ride.

  • @williamkeys5701

  • @mark-angelofamularcano237

    I'm noticing a trend in comment sections. Not just on youtube, but on blogs or any other place that talks about Fat Bikes.
    So many XC owners get so defensive about their XC bikes, it's like a dying breed or something. Relax people, no-one is going to kill off your precious XC.
    People are just excited for the sudden surge of fat bike popularity, but XC is still "ideal", so it won't go anywhere.
    So do us a favor and stop spamming fat bike discussion pages with "oh, fat bikes are okay, but MY xc is still superior on trails, and will never trade for it blah blah blah! Speeeeeed. Speeeeed is important"

  • @andyjack37
    @andyjack37 Před 8 lety

    Surprising results in the video. Who'd have thought the fat bike would do so well?
    And congratulations on your ever improving presenting skills. Well done!
    Would love to see this challenge done with hardtails, though. Don't forget GMBN, not all of us can afford full-sus bikes.
    Also, which style of hardtail bike would you recommend for a rider who goes off road, nothing too serious with no major drop-offs, and who does a lot of cycling on roads with hill climbs?
    Cheers for any advice

      Well, although I am not marc. Nor do I speak in his name. But i definetely can understand him. Unless you are an XC racer or doing Xterra racing where basically you want to get uphill as fast as possible but downhill as smooth as possible in order to try and recover somehow for the next climb. It is pretty useless to have a bike that can climb the fastest as opposed to a bike that can definitely can climb albeit slower but are far better handling on the descent. I am guessing that marc being an ex pro dh racer enjoys that bit of mtb a little bit more than the climbing. So why not ride steadily uphill, "enjoy" it, survive and then shread the downhill which obviously marc knows how to do really fast!

    I think Marc's on to something if your going up hill on a endro bike it might be slow and sluggish but you can recover at the top of the hill and then have a extremely fun down hill bit so I think when I go out and I know if there a hill there I'll take a fat bike because there good fun going up and coming down !!!!!

    I wonder where a 27.5+ bike would stand, between XC and Fatbike probably..

    Nothing out climbs a fat bike in terms of terrain. Only loses, barely, to other bikes on hard pack trails.

    great review. :-) will you include 27.5 plus in your next comparison reviews?

    For me 27.5 is the best long ride climb than 29er because I experienced it .29er is fast in short ride but in long ride 27.5 is the best in maintaining speed of 20spm all climb

    great vid. you both look a bit chilly in this! have you done a comparison on gearing on bikes, as in 3 x 9, 2 x 11 etc? i've had a quick look and can't see anything, it would be nice to have a pros and cons and where to use each combination. keep up the good work.

      +Robert Sapsford Hi Robert, thanks for your comment. I think that for the majority of riders and most circumstances a 2x11 set up will be the best option. It allow's both a very big gear and easy one (depending on your chainring options) and is far less clutter than a 3x system. A 1x11 can also give a large enough range with the cassettes now available and is the lightest, simplest and most reliable as there are less components to go wrong.

    I'm in the Mohave Desert, do a fare amount of sand wash riding with my Minnesota Fat 2.0 and climb some of the sand embedded trails...it rides great, and it's much more stable than my first bike, a GT with 2.3" tires. My hubby had a 2.8" plus tire and did pretty good, but when he rode my fat tire, he said it gets great traction. Now he rides a Kona Supreme Operator with 2.5" tires and while he never complains, I can see he fights harder to climb, yet I'm jealous after riding his DH, with it's smooth running over everything and cushy landings from "airborne operations". Who is going to come-up with a bike that has expanding tires...ha ha!

    I really think you should lower the pressure in that fat tires :)
    It would help. Especially during the last climb.
