    Rakim is to hip hop what John Coltrane was to jazz, or Jimi Hendrix was to the electric guitar. He completely changed the direction of the artform and elevated it on a technical level way beyond where he found it. Everyone who came after him is a disciple.🎤

      his influence can't be underestimated. Compare Public Enemy's first two albums. The first one was before Rakim hit it and the second one was after Rakim and PE had totally changed their approach, especially in terms of the depth of their sampling. They saw the writing on the wall and followed the leader.

      That’s because Rakim was a saxophone player as a child and used to idolize John Coltrane. He saw how JC used techniques to fill space, and he knew that the way music is structured, he could fill in that space with syllables the way Coltrane would. So it’s another example of an artists using the meta from one medium and bringing it to the next. It’s genius.

    Eric B & Rakim's first three albums are all classics. Paid In Full, Follow the Leader and Let the Rhythm Hit Em. This album received 5 mics in The Source. The previous two weren't featured because The Source magazine didn't launch until the fall of 1988, but they're universally recognized as classics, as well. Nearly all modern emceeing flows from Rakim. He is call the God MC, because his 5% name is Rakim Allah, which translates to From the Lord, God.

      @disconnexionsdotcom Před rokem +2

      Rakim def revolutionized flows, but Kool G Rap came out the same year: 1986. He did "It's A Demo" in '86, but it took a few years for his album to come out. He was featured on a few songs and had some singles out in '87 and was ghostwriting for some of the Juice Crew members.

      @@disconnexionsdotcom All facts. However, while Eric B. & Ra were exploding in '86, I feel like G Rap & Polo didn't really catch fire until "Poison" in 1988. (Although, for me, as a bad ass kid, "Rikers Island" was the one!) And, then, of course "Road to the Riches" really blew them up. Appreciate your hip hop knowledge!

    • @disconnexionsdotcom
      @disconnexionsdotcom Před rokem +1

      @@verbone No doubt. I definitely rocked Kool G when he first came out. That Riker's Island song was pretty hard for it's time and It's A Demo was a NYC classic, especially the 87 remix that added the "I Know You Got Soul" sample. Kool G's buzz really came from the "Raw" demo that was leaked on Mr Magic's radio show. Then The Symphony came out and his verse BODIED everyone else's (IMO). That led to Road To The Riches and the rest is history.
