    Preparing your window for paint is key including using the right type of primer for your window frame. When painting vinyl, aluminum or PVC windows I like to go over all smooth surfaces with a foam roller to knock down any brush strokes for a professional finish. Be sure to protect your window seals on your vinyl windows with tape so you don't cause your window seals to fail resulting in foggy glass.

    First. You don't remove putty with an exacto knife. That's a great way to mess up your wood. Use a small spatula, a narrow chisel or even a plastic windshield ice scraper before you break out a blade.
    Second. You never scrape paint before doing a lead test.
    Third. You don't scrape hardware. That's just lazy. Take that window out of there and use proper paint removal techniques.
    4. Don't sand that wood before you put something over the glass like painters tape. Why risk scratching the glass? Butcher's paper and painters tape would protect it completely.
    5. You don't paint hardware on a window that's mounted. Lazy. Again. Take that window down and do it right.
    6. Oil the wood before you prime? It's called condition the wood and that wood clearly wasn't ready for conditioning. It still had heaps of paint on it and needed to be thoroughly cleaned and prepared.
    7. You need to wait after you condition the wood to see if it needs sanding again because sometimes conditioning can raise the grain and show you spots where you missed.
    8. That is definitely NOT how you smooth putty. You don't lick your finger and rub the putty. You use a friggin' moist towel or sponge, or even a napkin but for Pete's sake don't get your spit on the window (enzymes in saliva actually break down the putty a bit) AND you don't put a putty covered finger back in your mouth sicko.
    9. Now they tape??
    10. You don't need to gob on the paint like that. It's better to do two thin coats than one overly thick uneven coat like this.
    11. Painting hardware while the window is still hung?? Now the paint will crack the first time that window is opened, allowing moisture underneath the paint and causing rust. Good job.

      No sorry that's how we do it in new Zealand. Loose stuff when knock off with a filling blade or a linbide, he replaced all the glazing not just what was really fucked so he had to cut the glazing close to the wood. Otherwise you may aswell get a chisel and hammer and smash the window with a easy mistake lol. I use a chisel but no one else at any company I've painted for has used them
      Also hardly anyone has the time on their jobs to remove windows. We silver sheen our hinges and they don't crack. Looks nice with a metallic finish also. Taking windows on and off can be a whole other can of worms

    Is it safe to scrape and sand led based paint like that Anza??

    • @markh.6687
      @markh.6687 Před rokem +1

      No, it is NOT. Depending on your country's applicable laws, you may not be able to dry sand or dry scrape lead-based paints and other coatings. And remember that lead based paints/coatings were used for decades in some countries, including old stocks not required to be destroyed. So even dwellings (including apartments) may have lead-based paints or coatings such as varnishes and stains applied to walls, floors, cabinets, baseboards, etc.
      .
      In the United States the Federal lead-paint ban dates back to only 1978; decades ago lead was in paint and some other coatings. The USEPA urges homeowners to 'work wet' to avoid creating lead-contaminated dust by using damp rags and paint removers when and where possible instead of scraping or sanding. US professional contractors have to be certified in recognizing and abating lead-based paint/coating hazards. In some case special escapsulating paints must be used used over old lead-based paints/coatings in good condition.
      .
      Please consult your country's environmental or health and safety agencies for country-specific guidance.

    what is the oil for?

    • @cynthiamoon372
      @cynthiamoon372 Před 4 lety +3

      It is probably linseed oil and it soaks into the dry wood frame. Purpose is to keep the dry wood from sucking the oil from glazing putty. If the putty oil is drawn away, the putty gets brittle and eventually cracks. As a better alternative, I’ve been told that using an oil based primer on the bare wood will seal it thus prevent the oil being drawn out of putty.

      If the surface is sound yes. If you can't remove the paint with a linbide (paintscraper) or 60-80 grit sandpaper and it doesn't look all cracked then sand it to de gloss, prime (to be safe) and paint. The "official" test is take a craft knife cut an X put selotape over the 'X' press it firmly down and pull it off like a bandaid. That'll tell you if any previous paint coats or filler has broken down
