Wonderful! I find Ms Peters is one of few other Roses, apart from Dame Lansbury's, that embodies many of the more delicate mannerisms of ladies of the 1920s to a genuine degree.
For me, Bernadette's 'Small World' and 'You'll Never Get Away' are the best. She nailed Rose's coy manipulativeness in those songs, and it was the first time I could imagine Rose and Herbie having a sex life.
I saw you do this and I love everything you do but if I’m honest when you’re 91 I’ll only see you as a “Broadway Baby” lol. I love you dear and I’m so sorry for your loss. XO
I really hated this production and Bernadette Peters in the role of Mama Rose. I saw it during previews and I guess she was having vocal problems. Occasionally, she'd just leave out the notes she couldn't hit. Even in her clip here from Rosie's Turn her voice cracks on the lyrics "You either have it". Her voice was simply too small for this role, as was her personality.
Derek Heskell Derek No, wrong. Incorrect, wrong,. Wrong. Bernadette is a powerhouse and the part is well within her wheelhouse. The vocal problems were not, as Broadway bitter bitches said, because the role was too hard. It was because she had the flu.
@@rabbitfishtv Look, I'm a fan of Bernadette Peters, but she was not up to this part vocally or dramatically. Just listen to the Cast Recording from this production. She's terrible in this role. She was fine in Hello, Dolly but again, it was not best suited for her. She does better in shows written for her talents.
I have three reasons why her voice and personality is big. 1- She won two Tony’s and a Isabelle Stevenson award 2- she is a powerhouse when it comes to concerts and the theatre 3- she has over 50000 fans and your comment got 1 like so I wonder who’s personality is “smaller” HINT: it’s you

Best production of gypsy I ever saw. Bernadette had the flu, but powered through nonetheless.

Love Bernadette so much! 💜
Fantastic....
Bernadette Peters. Age cannot wither her.
I wished that Sam Mendes had the chance to do this the way he had planned but Arthur Laurents wasn't going there.
What did Sam planned?
Great
The only broadway show I left at intermission. After watching this clip, I should have stayed.

Mama Rose is not Bernadette Peters. Rose is gruff and bulstrous. Bernadette looks to be forcing herself. Uncomfortable to watch

I don't think her voice is small, she's a strong singer. The score was just too low for her & she was mis-cast.

She was sick during the hall spring of 2003. That's why her voice was weak.
But acting wise her Rose is INSANELY good!
