Johnna Murray, the original stage manager of Into the Woods was the guest for episode 28 of Ben Rimalower's podcast Giants in the Sky. In it she states that her father, lyricist John Murray (sometimes credited as Jack Murray), was hired to write the lyrics for the title song of the 1958 movie BONJOUR TRISTESSE but was bought out and Stephen Sondheim ended up writing them. Officially the lyrics ...

Her Miss Adelaide was superb
After Jack’s Mother dies: 1:56:25 Little Red: Yeah she’s dead 😅
The casting of this musical was spot on and genius! Donna Murphy’s Fosca is perfection!
Barbra mentions this in her book. WOW! and an most beautiful song- 2 songs. Excellence all the way!
Oh my goodness, this was just a completely different tone to Clark than I've ever heard before, but she did so well!! It kind of reminds of Imelda, especially near the end.
Larry King standing there looming over her with his arms crossed is so off-putting and disrespectful.
I love Bob mackie so much 🥴
You have to understand that this song was written FOR Glynnis Johns - a wonderful actress, but not a trained singer. All those wonderful singers out there tend to overperform this song and focus on the notes. Like Johns, Dame Judi Dench is a PHENOMENAL actress, but not a trained singer. Which is one of the reasons why this version of Send in the Clowns is one of the best ever recorded.
Where is this from?
God bless you, Marin!
Another truly great actress won a Tony for this performance in 1981: Jane Lapotaire. She and Sian Phillips are my two favorite actresses.
This was a brilliant production I saw the pro’s preview and then seven times more. I was later privileged to direct a charity performance fully staged with a cast of 45! Yes biggest train set ever. The most difficult challenge … Stephen also knew how to keep you listening by challenging the director to spot Dies irae musical quote in the score by listening - he knows full well you won’t hear it until the sitzprobe as it is in the piccolo part in Sweeney’s rant! The show is like a Swiss watch and extreme precision is required dialogue must lead smoothly to the singing entry - ‘there is no till ready vamp’ I was told! The most satisfying experience and as we only had a week at the Bloomsbury Theatre we could be lavish with the gore so I think we turned many people vegetarian!
Fantastic ❤
WOW! Awesome!
Love Carol Channing. I saw her in NY and when she took the show on tour. No one will ever match her Dolly.
SIMPLY PUT, SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL... SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!! SHE SINGS THIS SONG NOT ONLY WITH HER MOUTH BUT MAINLY WITH HER HEART, WITH HER MIND... AND WITH HER SOUL!!!!!

How many songs are MUSIC by Sondheim and lyrics by someone else?
I mean, "the frogs" is frog lyrics by Aristophanes
She sounds like one of the Chipmunks!
Thank you for the love for "in Buddy's Eyes" long my absolute favorite Sondheim song, often outshone by other bigger songs. Such a beautiful yet ultimately sad song. Pathos.
Almost as good as Barbara Cook’s definitive version - which is saying something.
Phenomenal performance, the incredible much missed Georgia Brown
Thanks for posting. A very young me is playing keyboards in the orchestra.
She should have dubbed Lucille Ball for the movie.
Imelda Sternson is now playing that part I loved Mis Channing as Mrs Van Hosmer in Toughly Modern Milly Ras-berries
Funny how Sondheim was being almost eulogized in the late '70s, when actually in a way he was just getting started. Julia McKenzie was the best Sally in "Follies" ever. (Juliet Prowse was the best Phyllis.)
The time Julie Andrews forgot she was human!
I have the fortune of being in new york seein her perforning Anna en the king and I and after the show i took a selfie with her she was so kind with me Imagine i traeveled form argentina to see the show. after several months i write to her and she answer me kindly. two year ahead she died of cancer. so sad the story but i have the best memory of the meeting and the show. All my love to her.
She’s so amazing! A true Hollywood legend! ❤
can you please upload the video if Diahann singing 'Something's Gotta Give' ? It's from the same performance.
Terrible. She acts just as he wasn’t even there. Her shouts are not even in tune
Remarkable, moving, brilliant choices. Thank you for posting.
Thanks for posting this -- we have so little to document David's astonishing performances!
Great actor ,great voice, great face 🥰💖💖💖
Anyone who heard her sing "Pink" in War Paint - arguably one of the finest vocal performances in the last two decades - knows she has matured with an instrument seemingly in its prime. As is her interpretative gift.
So before you passed did you spend your last days giving lists
this very much has the energy of a mafia person kidnapping her and making her do the song all by herself at a birthday party.
I assume this was filmed in the mid 1990s. Julie would be singing like this now but for that tragic throat surgery in June 1997, which deprived her of her beautiful singing voice.
Thank you for posting this! Have not seen this and I love Marin Mazzie. Her voice lives on!
just....wow....I may have a new favorite version...hope they do a recording, like papermill's
To be 71 and still have complete control of all vocal registers is incredible. I don’t think her voice has actually dropped in height that much since the late 70s when she was first a leading lady on Broadway. She has a very well preserved instrument.
Damn shame a Loudon Hearn recording was never made
Very few hairstyles have ever reached the depths of Gloria Hunnifords in this interview.
It was a stunning performance. But I must say again, recordings & video of any length or kind without express permission of producers & unions is not allowed.
Then why are you listening? And why do you watch such recordings on youtube? Explain yourself.
What idiot decided to run the end credits over this amazing and definitive performance?? Still, I've probably watched this clip dozens of times and am still blown away.
Wow
Bless the person who posted this audio. I heard this performance was out of this world and so glad I got to hear it.
Jennifer is a Broadway Star. But, she doesn't fit this particular song. Carol Burnett sang it Best.
I don’t much care for this rendition either. It lacks the wry wit others have brought to the song. I like Burnett’s version, but Polly Bergen’s performance in the first Broadway revival was phenomenal. I’m also very fond of Eartha Kitt’s version.
Burnett was good but...this is perfect for Jennifer. She's old enough and young enough, at the same time.
Thank you for posting all these!
Just an incredible night it was. This was probably the top highlight among many others. She sang the song differently than I've ever heard it before. There was a video of her performance on Facebook but it was taken down.
that last note...i mean come ON! masterclass.
