IS SUPERIOR THE WORLD'S BIGGEST LAKE?
1:28:11 Superior is the world's biggest freshwater lake by surface area. Caspian Sea is bigger but it's just a part of the ocean that got disconnected and now has 1/3 of the salinity so I feel iffy about its classification as a lake. Some would argue that it's Lake Baikal which is much deeper and with more volume (though way less surface area) but that's not much good unless you own a submarine. "World's largest freshwater lake on earth by surface area" doesn't work in a title.

Your videography and storytelling are wonderful! I especially enjoy the closeups of flowers and critters. You carried me back nearly a half century to my younger days exploring the lakes and streams of southern Yukon and northern B.C. in my Folbot. I can barely walk now, and my eyesight is so poor I can hardly make out a squirrel in a tree, much less the stars on a clear night. But on my large computer monitor and speakers, your video brings to me the sights and sounds of nature I so love. The call of the loon, the slap of a beaver's tail, the lap of water on a rocky shore, wind in the canopy, the roar of breakers on a troubled lake. Thank you for enriching my life!
I also appreciate your setting a good example of managing risk. Adventures are much more rewarding when you survive them. Hopefully your example will encourage young adventurers to exercise better judgement and live longer to share their tales.
This was the first video of yours I have come across, but I certainly look forward to watching more. And, I will watch this one again. I was delighted to take the opportunity to subscribe. May your excursions be many, safe, and rewarding. May your memories be warm and satisfying, and may you always have someone you love, and who loves you, to share them with.

You just reminded me of something: When I hiked the Appalachian Trail almost 30 years ago, I got to a shelter in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Biting gnats had been bothering all of us since we left Georgia. I went down to the stream pool water source, from the shelter to purify my night's supply of water for drinking and cooking. As I reached the pond, the gnats covered me from head to toe. It was miserable. Soon after, as my food was cooking, I wrote a limerick in the trail shelter logbook. It went,
"The gnats are a problem, don't scoff.
You need Deet, or some kind of Off.
      One little pesticle
      Bit my left testicle
And now I am REALLY PISSED OFF!"
A few monster hikers caught up to me and said they died laughing at my log post, and looked forward to catching up to meet me. They suffered the same thing as me. And appreciated my humor. I replied, "It's all what we make it. Gotta keep the goal in mind and laugh about the irritating stuff."
Those guys finished. I didn't, because of a family event I stopped and got off the trail for. One day before I crap out, maybe, I'll hike the trail again. And finish.

While I know there's people who would love to trade places with me, I can say with a lot of experience and a lot of time in both places.... cherish what you have. I have the ocean now and it is a magical place to be if you like sharing the beach with a million other people. You can kayak or canoe out in the gulf and that's nice too....if you don't mind surfing the wake of the million other power boats out there. I miss the peace and tranquility. I watch your videos and I know the smell. What that wind feels like. The smell of field grass. I miss it so much. I wish I could go home. Never take it for granted.

@@LostLakes is there any possibility of getting your start point in rockport with pathing for the first set of islands? • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  Před rokem +1

No problem. You can launch a canoe here: goo.gl/maps/3vC79jAGaTjfxLb49 and then cross to the islands anywhere but usually where the distance is minimized. BUT--given that I have no idea of your experience--keep in mind that this lake can be extremely dangerous to be on in any vessel and especially in an open canoe. And to make any open water crossings between islands you MUST have a dry or wet suit. The water is lethally cold even in summer and kills by incapacitation drowning in a few minutes as one's body loses control from the cold. So if you dump away from shore it can be deadly. Conditions change fast and it can be hard to plan a trip here if you don't live close because you might arrive or need to leave on a no-go day.

That was SO beautiful! All those rock cliffs, northern lights, sunsets and sunrises, beautiful flowers and caves. I collect rock an every one of them would go home with me. I have a old washtub for a table outside an i have small rocks on half of it. I do sit out there an play with them a look at them every day. Yep I'm pretty strange. You can put them in a glass bowl with water in it an floating candles. Thanks excellent video.

Our first experience with Lake Superior was at Munising. Hardly comparable to your epic outing, we did get to experience the beauty with which you regularly describe this amazing lake. We had Trout Cove on Grand Island to ourselves for an hour. We also wet our feet and skipped a few stones on the western shores of the island. Neither of us have seen such pristine waters.
This is such an amazing video. We’re grateful for your dedication and tireless work to bring such incredible beauty to our lives. Be safe!! The video starting at 47:55 is stunning.

Thanks for filling a necessary nature gap in all of our lives and connecting us with our historic roots living from the land and exploring. I totally understand your curiosity. As for those souvenir rocks you might consider incorporating them into something like furniture or a picture frame with some clear marine epoxy.

While I do not expect my comment to be found amongst the (currently 1002) other offerings, I will write it anyway. As a sort of open journal entry for anyone to explore, I write as if no one is looking.
This video stirred up so many buried emotions and memories - at a most visceral level. My childhood was forged over the rocky shores and under the dark green pines of Wisconsin's northwoods. There I was tested; the deep winter nights and long summer days, cool waters and clear skies were my companions and my teachers. My identity and titles were wrought by solo camping trips and hunting kills, growing my bush craft and taking others along with me. I knew who I was in the north woods of Wisconsin. Yet, as I bitterly learned, I was not immune from the rootlessness found in the modern world. At the age of 15, I was torn away from the land I loved to follow the people I loved.
I cannot bemoan my new home. The Appalachian's of Western North Carolina offer their own rich history, most of it even older than my homeland. The misty creeks and white water rivers which cut harsh channels between the rising folds of green earth are a wonder to behold and a friendship to be cherished. Indeed, perhaps it is only through the new adventures and unknown wilderness that I was able to survive my sudden uproot. Unlike hostas or rhubarb, my ability to survive a transplant is limited. It is true, the miracle, and often fetter, of modern transportation has granted me occasional returns to the Great Lakes. Yet, my family's relocation so mercilessly and utterly separated my boyhood from my manhood that short visits only aggravated the wound.
Ten long years will do many things. I have a new home now, the misty hollers, clear cricks, old mountain culture - so hidden in this ancient earthly ripple - have become precious and sacred to me. Yet the price to become fond of a new land is often the forsaking of the old.
It is here that your video found me. After years of suffocation, the coals of my boyish desire for adventure and exploration into the northern wilderness where I was raised were all but extinguished. Now, as gasoline a dying flame - burning hot but brief, I was transported back to the land I called home and the desires which I had. Canoeing the greatest Lake on our planet was my dream, yet unrealized. Thank you for taking me along, it was a journey I did from my office. For it was more soothing than a physical breath of fresh air.
Now I know what I must do, and the plans are in the works to canoe the north shore of Lake Superior, come hell or high water.

The Superior coast is a geologists wet dream, not just for the type of rock, but for the incredible formations. I have spent 30+ years mostly between the Soo and Wawa and I continue to find new places and wonders every outing. I still enjoy exploring the interior, but it rarely inspires as much as the big lake. My kids would ask me occasionally about my religious beliefs and my response has always been "Superior is my church". They grew to understand this more with age and had more exposure to Superior. I only hope I have enough good years left in me to show them more.
Thanks Jonthar of the Cave people! I really enjoy watching your sense of adventure in action and the reverence you hold for this powerful land.
