If you're awesome and want to "join" #TeamTrees, use the first link in the video description or you can click on the CZcams donate link above! My favorite thing about this whole movement is that tons of people are coming together from all over the internet to unify for a common goal. I genuinely get excited when a diverse group of people come together to do something amazing, and I believe this could be our moment. If you're a working adult, please consider donating in a big way to this. I can think of no more efficient way for your dollars to be converted into ACTUAL, REAL LIFE TREES! LET'S plant 20 Million trees!!
How do we make sure the trees we plant are diverse?
If you wanted an excuse to visit Hawaii, on Oahu there is a ranch called the Gunstock Ranch working to replace all the invasive trees on their land with native trees.
@Chris seems pretty racist. They need more diversity.
@@oyvey304 lol, you got me there
My only question is if for each dollar there is actually one NEW tree planted or if they already planted ahead and then just slowly payoff these „reservoirs“
I'll allow people to enter my forest to plant trees, I have a lot of places around here that are getting kinda thin
Just Some Bigfoot With Internet Access dude is see you in like every comment section
I'm sure bigfoot like some T H I C C E R forests.
And then make profit by selling wood in some years lol
Selling wood is actually a way to store the carbon away for some decades (or maybe a century) if they are used in the construction of buildings. If the trees aren't used, they will die and decay and release the carbon again. But even buildings will eventually get demolished and then the wood can decay and release the carbon again. That's why it is called carbon cycle. But the use of wood reduces the use of other materials that are more carbon intensive, like steel and concrete. ;)

Destin, Your video of this project is the best I've seen so far (I've only seen 3 or 4). It promotes the project while showing in an insightful, educated way that this isn't as easy as just plopping 20 million trees in the ground and walking away. It has to be done correctly. Just like your granddaddy's trees, where only two lived, if we just drop 20 million trees in the ground and don't do it properly in the first place, and then don't take care of them after planting, we are just throwing $20 million dollars away. So thank you for bringing this to light in the way you did; in a "we can totally do this, but we need to do it responsibly" sort of way.

As an ecologist you should look into China's tree planting program. They plant billions of trees each year and have been for decades now. Some are to deal with pollution, but others are being used in an attempt to push back the deserts. It's interesting because we don't know what the long term results will be, it may be amazing or it may destroy massive regions due to excessive water use.

except to meet the goals they want about reducing carbon footprint, they would need to plant 20 million trees.. every day.. for a year... the better solution is getting off of oil, coal, and other fuels. Solar is worse (yup, i said worse. see how much it takes to make solar farms) the real carbon elimination - is Nuclear.
@@xXKisskerXx solar is worse because of its scarcity. Like anything, itll go down as demands for it grows
@@xXKisskerXx so, are geothermal, wind, nuclear energy and hydroelectricity (like dams) could be alternative solution to fossil fuels?
@@emmurdl9363 The problem with storing wind, solar & hydro-electrical is that we don't have a scalable way to store mass amounts of electricity. When we make a global power grid storage won't be a problem, but currently we do, as even hydro-electrical generation involves environmental damage if we only run it when the demand is high, as that creates rapidly changing water levels...

What a wonderful idea!
A great way to give back to the environment and provide job security to families.
For those unaware of the forestry term "thinning" spoken of at 2:50 , around here it's after the pines are roughly 10-15 years old and the trees are crowded up and fighting over resources. Logging crews come in and "thin out" the plantations by harvesting every other tree to allow the surviving trees to thrive until the next harvest.
In addition to donating, I've started burning my neighbors lawn in the hopes of promoting tree growth.

@Henk van der Laak that's just the beginning. But 20 million is a lot. Don't underestimate the effects that many trees can have
@Henk van der Laak thats like the worst attitude to have
@Henk van der Laak I mean, the number is definetly fake.. but even then, 20 million trees may not have an inmediate impact but will actually do a lot in the future since you know, they reproduce and all that stuff living things do.
Henk van der Laak one plant locked in a glass box, can provide enough oxygen for several bugs.
Henk van der Laak maybe not atm but it might become a problem, when global warming causes an ice age. Or whatever else happens.
I wasn’t talking about oxygen only, you saw the video, a tree provides home to several animals. Climate change isn’t all that matters, example; I’m pretty sure I saw something in the news about the rainforest burning. 20mil might not be a lot, but it is better than absolutely nothing, wouldn’t you say?
Although my area in north Mississippi is far north of the area shown in the video for longleaf pines, I have had excellent success growing them as an ornamental tree in yards that are mowed. The mowing keeps any competitive plants from being near the longleaf pines. No fire needed. I had one tree that was about 50 years old when it was removed because it was near a house. I now live on a lot that is right near the center of my town where I have a longleaf pine that is now about 15 feet high. I have ten more in pots that I will over the next year or two give to others to plant in their yards or I will plant them on public property for people to see and be amazed by their giant pinecones.
Thanks for supporting TeamTrees, Destin!
8:19 I have to say I love the fact that the tortoise is acting like it's still on the ground moving its little feet in the air.
I thought he same thing. The poor little guy was trying to figure out why he's flapping his legs but not going anywhere. I mean imagine if you're that tortoise, you've never been in the air before and your always like 1/2 an inch from the ground. Hello Destin,
I have learned all about this! I have taken a fire ecology course and have burned 5 acres in Tifton, GA when I was an undergrad as North Carolina State University in my Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology Program this last academic year. They taught us all about this, how to do it, and promote this heavily where this normally naturally occurs. I am glad that you made this video to tell the world!
When Destin tells me to do something, I obey! I'm down for twenty trees. (And though I've said it before, gosh I love your enthusiasm for learning things from helpful people and sharing it with all of us!)
this is such a good campaign that I hope it reaches the goal, I feel like we should put all the media power like we did to help pewdipie in the past but towards real social problems and helping our planet.

That is AWESOME! As an arborist, I am so glad to see this project taking roots. Nicely done Destin!
Lots of different types of pine trees need fire to thrive. Some have evolved to grow extra thick, sponge-like bark to soak up rain during the storm that will insulate them from fires started by lightening strikes. The fire burns away the underbrush and also burns the small branches and suckers growing on the trees, just as if a person had come along and pruned them. Some of them have developed so that their pine cones won't open and drop the seeds until they are exposed to an unnaturally high temperature only reached when a fire has burned the area, ensuring the seeds will drop on soil free of underbrush so the young tree won't have to compete for light. Nature is a wonderful thing.

Hey destin! Big fan here! I’m a forestry student and just wanted you to know that there’s a nursery in Moultrie, Ga. they grow 56,000,000 trees a year. Most of which are planted. No slight to you but 20 mil is just 1/3 of pines trees planted in the southeastern US. Most of the SE states practice sustainable forestry
Also, in Tampa, we have that ecosystem you were talking about when you were in Florida (where Tampa is if you didn't know) and it's the place where lightning strikes the most in the US, so nature really would have that ecosystem on it's own.
CD already got me to donate, but I'm glad y'all are posting videos about this!
I've lived around Longleaf pines all of my life and have never heard about their capability to withstand fire. The name of this youtube channel is so accurate. After every video I truly become smarter every day.
The mention of longleaf pines brought back some old memories.
We had a bunch around Fort Polk when I was serving there in 1982-1983. They didn't look quite like the ones that you pictured because they were growing out in the open rather than in a forest. Somewhere, I have some old 35mm pictures of them, some with the sunset as background. There were boots hanging off of the long horizontal branches because of the old tradition of hanging up your boots when you are about to leave the service.
The ecosystem you were showing looked very familiar. I did a certain amount of wandering around, but got more familiar with the area during military exercises.
Around here (Michigan,) the dominant conifers are red pines (we have about six or seven acres of them on our ten acre parcel) and white pines. The deciduous trees are a lot more diverse. Alas, we are losing some. The Emerald Ash Borer is doing bad things to our ash trees. We have a bunch of elm trees at the front of our property that are struggling. They are successfully reseeding themselves, but they don't last long. Happily, we have an isolated elm just outside the window here that seems to be doing well. There is also an isolated chestnut tree that took a hard hit, but is still alive.
"Long leaf pine. What do i need to know?"
*"Burn it."*
And so the US went to war against the long leaf pine to save it.
Helping the algorithm, Great Video Destin!

Dear TeamTrees, you can save *one billion trees* with the money you have raised.
It costs you about $20M to plant 20M trees. However, given the fact that toilet papers cost us 384 trees per lifetime of a person, you can buy bidets and/or hoses that costs $20-$30 each. By spending $20M on this, you can buy a MILLION bidets for a million families. That will help saving about (2.5 people per bathroom) × (1,000,000 bathrooms) (384 trees per person) = *1 BILLION trees!!!!*
Of course not everyone is a fan of changing from toilet paper to water but finding a million family willing to endorse this idea out of the 122M American families is actually not that hard.
You guys have already raised $21M for helping the environment, but with the same amount of money, you can do much more.
