    The macrumors forum has been updated, there is a vbios available to flash the nvidia k4100m to work with the 2011 imac for a gpu upgrade. Now, the 27 inch iMac is going to be the best option here, because the k4100m is a more powerful card that has a tbp of around 100watts, which is similar to the radeon 6970m that shipped in only the 27inch iMac.
    Best for the 27 inch iMac, because it has a power draw of 100w

    Curtis, I recently purchased three components off of eBay for my 27" 2011 iMac, based on the excellent MacRumors thread you turned me on to, as well as your videos covering all this stuff. I should receive these three items this coming week and I am quite excited to install them, and then learn to flash the vBIOS using the Linux stick method. Below is my MacRumors signature line, so you can see what I have and what I am going to install. Thanks for the great videos. I have learned a lot from you. I will soon be bugging you for help, too, heh, heh…

    • @highvoltage12v
      @highvoltage12v Před 4 lety +1

      The answer really depends on what was the original card installed into your iMac? If it was a 6970m you'd want to stick with a MXM-B card such as the GTX780M/860M/870M/880M/k3100m/k4100M/K5100m ETC. If your iMac shipped with the 6770m (less likely to die, but we have seen it) then you're looking at the k610m/k1100m/k2100m as these are all the MXM-A sized cards that fit your Heatsink.
      You could also buy a dead 6970M card with heatsink off eBay just for the Heatsink.

    To anyone who knows about the actual physical placement of the 4100m into a 2011 (27"3.4/i7/6970 baked back into service for 7 months). On a different iMac I had a 2100m put in by a nerdier guy than me and it's been solid for nearly two years and runs a Thunderbolt Display, so I want to see about this i7 and perhaps shoot higher still. And on the one in question, I have taken things apart and done the baking and rebuild myself. Are there any physical mods (filing/grinding/adapting type stuff) to know about, and maybe a 4100-specific tutorial if there is one?
    I'm also pretty well versed in OCLP. The iMac in question is just one of the machines I have using it (Big Sur) and I've done several more. It looks like the end of the line for Kepler GPUs with Monterey 12.5, but for an iMac so far out of support, that would be a huge extension of lifespan.
    At best, my demands for the iMac would be amateur video work for music or orgs, personal stuff, etc, and Logic. I know Logic isn't a demand on the system so better to just say I could use it for the video stuff and hope to have something more robust than I started with, and not prone to dying anytime soon.

      Yup! I would leverage a linux bootable USB stick and SSH in from another device and flash the vbios that way (could even use a phone if you download a terminal client). You can use windows as well, if you install 'teamviewer' before installing the video card. The tricky part is that while MacOS will boot and show the screen, linux and windows will not until they are flashed...so you have to do a 'blind boot / flash.'
